Carry On Girls Film Review

The Carry On films where once known for there slightly cheeky humor that gradually over time ended up with them outright saying what they were alluding to. This is something that it could be argued started with the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today as this film is the saucer of the Carry On films and yet it still does have that same early Carry On charm that made the films as well beloved as they were n the first place and so then join me as I review the film that is the first film not to feature both Kenneth Williams and Charles Hawtrey with the film in question being called simply just "Carry On Girls" enjoy.

The plot of this film is in a bid to get more people to come to his local town of Fircombe local Councillor Sidney Fiddler decides to hold a beauty contest much to chagrin of Councillor Augusta Prodworthy. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. To be frank this films plot isn't as bad as later Carry On plots would be but at the same time tho the plot also isn't as good as the earlier Carry On plots as it does feel like that this film is just gong through the motions. With there not really being alot of thought and effort put into giving this film a fun plot which is something that alot of the bad early Carry On films had going for them and yet her it does feel like that the makers of this film knew that they were going to make money off of this film anyway and therefor just gave us the bae minimum of a plot this is not to say that the films plot is outright bad as it's not as there are some interesting things in it like the stuff with feminists for example that's good stuff that does lead to some comedic moments but those scenes feel underbaked with the rest of the films plot just feeling the typical Carry On plot but with none of the charm put into it yet you can still see some of that old Carry On charm in this films plot as the plot is really simple and really easy to follow along with and when it's good the films plot can be really entertaining but nine times out of ten your really just watch the standard Carry On plot and that's it with the plot of this film not really being really rather entertaining and nor is it really rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is Sid James as Sidney Fiddler , Dame Barbara Windsor as Hope Springs and Joan Sims as Connie Philpotts. Also starring in this film is Kenneth Connor as Mayor Frederick Bumble , Bernard Bresslaw as Peter Potter , Peter Butterworth as The Admiral , June Whitfield as Augusta Prodworthy , Jack Douglas as William , Patsy Rowlands as Mildred Bumble , Patricia Franklin as Rosemary , Valerie Leon as Paula Perkins , Robin Askwith as Larry , Margaret Nolan as Dawn Brakes , Angela Grant as Miss Bangor , Joan Hickson as Mrs Dukes , Sally Geeson as Debra , Jimmy Logan as Cecil Gaybody , Wendy Richard as Ida Downes , David Lodge as The Police Inspector , Arnold Ridley as Alderman Pratt , Bill Pertwee as The Fire Chief , Marianne Stone as Miss Drew , Brenda Cowling as Matron , Zena Clifton as Susan Brooks , Laraine Humphrys as Eileen Denby , Pauline Peart as Gloria Winch , Caroline Whitaker as Mary Parker , Barbara Wise as Julia Oates , Carol Wyler as Maureen Darcy and Mavis Fyson as Frances Cake.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. The actors that you do expect a god performance like for example Sid James and Dame Barbara Windsor do give us a really good performance with the pair of them being as saucy and as fun to watch as they always are with the one actor who did catch me of guard with how good he was in this film being Jack Douglas as William as he was just so much fun to watch in this film with it being obvious that was having the time of his life not only making this film but also in playing this character as well and it is something that does come through on screen. With the best actor in the film being Sid James as Sidney Fiddler as Sid James is always such a delight to watch in these films and you can tell that he did have a good time in making this film as his performance is so full of life and energy with it being helped by the fact that he mainly paired with both Dame Barbara Windsor and Bernard Bresslaw both of which do help to bring the best in him as he does have great chemistry with both actors which is something that was key to making his performance in this film work as well as it does with him brining his own unique blend of charm and charisma to the role which is something that really does shin through in his performance. With the acting that's in this very film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors anything to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

This films characters if we're being honest here aren't that good however this is something that could also be said for all of the Carry On films. However with this film the characters aren't even the basic stereotypes that they are in other films there just for lack of a better here nothing as there's nothing to these characters that make them stand out (Dame Barbara Windsor has two things that make her stand out) there really is nothing to any of these characters with them all being forgettable heck the film straight up forgets about Margaret Nolan's character for a large of the films running time and Wendy Richards character good as well gets dropped after being in one scene with even the characters that the film does indeed focus on not fairing any better either as there is nothing to Sid James's character outside of the fact that he's a Councillor trying to get people to come to his hometown and that's it and that's great for the start of a character but there's needed to be a little bit more to him then that. To be fair to this film all of the Carry On regulars that are in this film do play there character types well with Sid James being the lovable person that can charm his way out of anything Dame Barbera Windsor plays the saucy character who along with Sid James gets alot of the more saucy jokes and Bernard Bresslaw plays a lovable dimwitted friend of Sid James's character and these are character types that will always work as they are funny by there very nature and it is great seeing actors that can play these characters in there sleep but it still would have been nice if there was literally anything to any of this films characters to make them stand out.

As was mentioned at the very start of this revie this is the first Carry On film not to star both Kenneth Williams and Charles Hawtrey with Williams being unable to appear due to stage commitments and Hawtrey was dropped from the Carry On films all together due to the fact that he was becoming an alcoholic who was unreliable to work with. It is kind of hard to picture just who they would have ended up playing in this film had they been cast in it given the the fact that Williams was always playing the stressed out character who was one bad day away from ending up in hospital maybe he could have ended up playing a character very similar to Augusta Prodworthy as she does seem like the type of character that he would play with Hawtrey perhaps being cast as the useless William as this is something that would have given him a chance to show that he could physical comedy. However in saying this given the fact that this film is alot more saucier then the other Carry On films are it is hard to imagine them even doing this film in the first place and while Kenneth Williams would have made the film alot more fun to watch as his brand of nervous energy is something that would have the film somehow be alot more better it's hard to say if Hawtrey would be the right fit for this film as the kind of characters that he usually plays are usually very clean cut characters and in this film there's no one really like that which would make his inclusion in the film feel alot more forced as he would have nothing to do in the film with even the closest character to the ones that he usually would play Larry not even doing all that much in the film as he gets forgotten about after a scene on the beach therefor it is perhaps for the best that he never did star in this film , where as with Kenneth Williams he would have fitted right in with this film and the film is hurt a little bit by not having him in the film.

Something that is hard to work out in this film is who the main villain of the film is even meant to be as the film does spend a good portion of it's running time with Augusta Prodworthy as the villain with her doing everything that she can do to not only belittle the mayor but also get the beauty contest cancelled all together. Yet Sid himself also spends a good of the films running time convincing his friends to go along with his schemes which ends with them feeling embarrassed and it's him that the townsfolk end up chasing off at the end of the film believing that he's conned them out of there money this is something that does make it hard to work out who the main villain of the film is meant to be as both characters have solid reasons for being both the hero and the villain of the film and yet the makers of this film don't make it clear on which character we are meant to be rooting for. As while Sid is trying to do something good by getting more visitors to the town how he goes about it doing by charming everyone that he can and pushing that trust that they have for hm beyond stretching limits is something that could make him a villain where with Augusta Prodworthy while she is opposed to the idea of the contest being held in the first place due to the fact that she is a feminist her points are solid as something like that does make women be seen as nothing more then objects to be desired but again how she enforces those believes is something that does make her appear to be the films villain as she does state that she hates men and is willing to take away everything that men have which in of itself is a sexist thing to do, if push did come to shove tho the closest thing that we have to true villain has to be Augusta Prodworthy just due to the fact that she does the more villainous things in the film which does make the end scene with Sid being driven out of the town pointless as he literally did nothing wrong during the beauty contest itself whereas Augusta Prodworthy did.

The idea of having someone be so opposed to having a beauty contest held in the local town is a good idea and while the film does fully explore why Prodworthy feels the way she does. Having this contest in the town is something that would also cause more people to come to town which is something that they needed to happen as no one was coming to the town due to the fact that there's nothing for people to do and the fact that it rains there alot of the time which for a seaside town is not something that you want to happen therefor it would have made more sense if Prodworthy was against the contest just because of a personally hatred that she has for Sid as his idea is a genuinely good one and is one that was working until she stuck her nose in. Heck if the makers of this film really wanted to make ether character the bad guy then why not go all the way and have every character in the town either hate them from the start or come to hate them as the film goes on like maybe Prodworthy can start turning those that support her cause against her when they see what good the beauty contest is doing for the town and have her in one last bid to stop the contest be the one that wrecks it all herself or in the case of Sid why not make this person who the people know are going t us them to get what he wants this is something that would make it a but more clearer on who the bad guy is meant to be and it would make Prodworthy's plan feel more in line with other Carry On films where the villains plan gets so over the top that it basically becomes like a cartoon and you the audience can't help but get more sucked in to the madness.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty four minuets and thirty seconds. This is something that is pretty much the bogstandard running tom for these films to have and to be fair this film really doesn't need to be any longer then that as the film does have both a basic premise and characters and therefor making the film be even ten minuets longer would be stretching what is an already thin premise even thinner yet at the same time tho if this film was longer then it would mean that the film would get to have alot more jokes in it and given the fact that the Carry On films have nearly always been more joke heavy then plot heavy this is something that would make sense with this film having the right amount of plot there to cover this amount of running time in the first place. With the film not even using its running time all that wisely as the film doesn't take the time to fully develop its plot as the film does have alot of scenes in it that in the grand scheme of things add nothing to the films plot and are only there to make the film be more naughtier then the other Carry On films are and while yes the other films also didn't have plot or character development either they were a bit more subtle about it with the makers of this film putting more thought and effort into putting Bernard Bresslaw into a dress then they did into giving the film some plot development. This is something that is also true for the films character development as none of the films characters get any kind of character development which again is also kind of true for the rest of the Carry On with the only real exception being Carry On Cabby with the makers of this film putting more thought and effort into making sure that we knew that they had a bunch of good looking girls in it then they did into giving the films character some character development but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.

So now then as this is a comedy that really does meant that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The films comedy is easily the best part of the film as you could argue that alot of the time that's when it gets to feel like a true Carry On film as when the film does get to do some physical comedy like The Mayor being dropped threw the theatre's trap door for example that's when it gets to really work but when the film just outright says what its illuding to instead of hinting at it like it would normally that's when the film stops feeling like a Carry On film starts feeling more like a Confessions Of film. With the best joke in the whole film being the entire sequence at the contest itself as the contest just evolves into the typical Carry On chaos with both sides trying there best to win the day with Prodworthy and her allies doing everything in there power to ruin the contest by putting itching powder in the girls bikini's and then greasing up the walk way so that they fall over all the while Sid is trying to hold the contest this is something that does work as we do get to see alot of the characters come together to just cause chaos and it's something that does work as there's something in it for everyone as if you don't like physical comedy then you can get the comedy of Sid reacting to what's going on around him or it you don't like that then you have The Mayor going three the trap door or several very attractive women to look at with the rest of the films jokes being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall this film might very well be one of the weaker Carry On films due to the fact that is does stray perhaps a bit to far from what it was that made the Carry On films so well beloved in the first place this is also film that does try to be funny and clever but due to it's bad characters it ends up being neither in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really foes mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 6 out of 10 from me.

Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the image that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
