Looney Tunes: Back In Action Film Review

It would be quite pointless to do an introduction for anything to do with the Looney Tunes as even if people dont know alot of the characters they know of Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck for example. As while the characters are in a bit of trouble right now due to how badly there being handled by Warner Bros back in 2002 they still loved them and therefor I thought that i'd take a look back at what is technically the last Looney Tunes theatrically released film to get released by Warner Bros into theaters as they didn't release the two most recent films and Space Jam: A New Legacy got released direct to HBO Max and so then join me as I review the film that sees Brendan Fraser take on his most difficult role to date playing the Tasmanian Devil with the film in question being called simply just "Looney Tunes: Back In Action" enjoy.

The plot of this film is when he is hired by Warner Bros Daffy Duck and the also fired Damian "D. J." Drake Jr. get sent on a mission by Damian's father with the dup being joined by Bugs Bunny and studio employee Kate Houghton to recover a mystical jewel that the Acme CEO plans to use to transform the worlds population into monkeys. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. As this films plot is one that foes feel right at home with the Looney Tunes characters as it is a plot that you could see them tacking on in one of their classic cartoons the issue is is that this plot isn't all that Looney Tunes focused as while we do have Bugs and Daffy in main roles with Daffy even being the one to save the day. The films plot doesn't really do all that much with them rather instead the films plot focused more of the human characters which is something that would have been great if this film had been called literally anything else and wasn't meant to be a Looney Tunes but due to the fact that it does have that Looney Tunes name you do expect the Looney Tunes to geta alot more of the focus on the films plot. However to give this films plot some credit it is a looney enough plot that it does end up working with it being a plot that isn't afraid to be weird and crazy and zany whereas something like Space Jam: A New Legacy played its plot to straight here it comes across as the makers of this film knew full well that the plot wasn't that good and therefor they just had more fun with it and it does end up working because of it with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is Brendan Fraser as Damian "D. J." Drake Jr. , Himself , Tasmanian Devil and Tasmanian She-Devil , Jenna Elfman as Kate Houghton , Steve Martin as Mr. Chairman and Heather Locklear as Dusty Tails. Also starring in this film is Timothy Dalton as Damian Drake Sr. , Joan Cusack as Mother , Bill Goldberg as Mr. Smith , Marc Lawrence as Acme VP, Stating the Obvious , Bill McKinney as Acme VP, Nitpicking , George Murdock as Acme VP, Unfairly Promoted , Ron Perlman as Acme VP, Never Learning , Robert Picardo as Acme VP, Rhetorical Questions , Leo Rossi as Acme VP, Climbing to the Top , Vernon G. Wells as Acme VP, Child Labor , Mary Woronov as Acme VP, Bad Ideas , Joe Alaskey as Bugs Bunny , Daffy Duck , Beaky Buzzard , Sylvester and Harrietta Bear , Jeff Glenn Bennett as Yosemite Sam , Foghorn Leghorn and Nasty Canasta , Billy West as , Elmer Fudd , Peter Lorre and The Scream , Eric Goldberg as Tweety Bird , Marvin The Martian and Speedy Gonzales , Bruce Lanoil as Pepé Le Pew , June Foray as Granny , Bob Bergen as Porky Pig , Casey Kasem as Shaggy Rogers , Frank Welker as Scooby-Doo , Danny Chambers as Cottontail Smith , Stan Freberg as Junior Bear , Will Ryan as Henry Bear and Danny Mann as Robo Dog and the Spy Car.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. With this films acting being alot better then what it really has any right to be with alot of the films human actors turning in some really decent performances in the film however tho alot of them especially Steve Martin do play their roles so over the top that you don't buy into there performances yet with the films voice actors that are all so god in this film which is something that really does make alot of sense as alot of tare either reprising their roles from either Space Jam or are reprising their roles from there Looney Tunes projects at the time therefor they would of course course know how best to perform as those characters. With the best actor in this film being Joe Alaskey as not only does he play alot out different characters in the film but his two main characters those being Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck share alot of there screen time together and therefor alot of the time it is just him essentially talking to himself in those scenes and you really can't tell as he does have great voices for both of the characters with him giving a really good performance not only as both of those characters but for all of the characters that he ends up playing in this film as while he hadn't been playing Bugs for all that long when this film was being made he had been playing Daffy since the nineties and yet you really can't tell as his Bugs voice is down perfectly and his Daffy voice sounds really good with him having natural charisma that really does shine through i n his performance in this film. With the acting that's in this film not really being helped by he fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors anything to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very very film.

Doing the animation for this film is Hydraulx , Digital Domain , Pixel Magic , At The Post , Amalgamated Pixels , New Deal Studios and Warner Bros. Animation. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. With the film using a mixture of 2D and 3D animation with alot of the characters being done 2D animation and there being a CGI dog with the two blending together really well with the films live action elements and heck the film even has the animated characters grabbing a live action object and interacting with it something which couldn't have been easy to make look right. The thing that does help this aspect of the film being the fact that alot of the film was filmed three times once with stand-ins for the animated characters and the live action actors , then again with nothing in the scene and then again with the live action actors against a green screen with this allowing for the animators to better integrate the animated characters into the live action setting and while there are some decent pieces of animation in this film it is hard to deny the fact that the CGI dog does look horrible his is by no fault of the makers of this film as they wouldn't have had the technology there to make the character look all that good in CGI but it is something that does make you wonder why the character wasn't done in 2D as there's noting in this film that demands that that dog be done in CGI.

This films director has often stated that this film is better then Space Jam due to how it portrays the Looney Tunes characters. While there is some merit to that one does also have to take into account that even in the original shorts the Looney Tunes were portrayed differently from cartoon to cartoon as in one cartoon Daffy could be more selfish and egotistical and in the vest next cartoon he could his more wacky and goofy self and the same is true for Bugs as in one cartoon he could be the hero that's bein hunter by Elmer Fudd and yet in the next cartoon he could be the villain that's racing Cecil Turtle therefor his own logic of the Looney Tunes not acting like themselves in one movie doesn't really work when even in the shorts they were never themselves from cartoon as the cartoons gave them a chance to show of different sides to there personalities and it could have be argued that the same thing is also true for these two films as well. However to give this film is it does feel the most like a Looney Tunes cartoon with the film having the wit and the style of alot of those classic Chuck Jones directed cartoons which is something that does make as this films director Joe Dante was a good friend of Chuck Jones's with him even being the one to bring out of retirement to animated Bugs and daffy in the opening to Gremlins 2: The New Batch and in this regard this film is better then Space Jam as that film felt more like an advertisement for Nike whereas this film does feel like what a live action Looney Tunes cartoon would indeed look like however out of the two films tho Space Jam is the more better film as it is the more fun movie.

It's no secret that Warner Bros butchered this film when it was first being made and you really can tell as there is a great Looney Tunes film here. It's just that due to all of the meddling by the studio the Looney Tunes themselves aren't allowed to be as looney as we know them to be due to the fact that alot of the time they are fighting from screen time with the films human characters this is despite the fact that alot of the Looney Tunes characters have alot of screen time with the films human characters but due to how the film is shot and edited the Looney Tunes aren't given that much f a chance t show case why they were so beloved in the first place which just leaves us with a bunch of human characters who were never designed to get alot of screen time. Yet when the film does focus on say Bugs or Daffy that's when the film gets to show it's promise and give you a look at just how good it could have been and while we do of course need to have human characters in this live action and animated hybrid film they never had to take away from the characters that we want to see in a Looney Tunes movie as people aren't coming to this movie to see Brendan Fraser there coming to see Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck and if the studio had allowed for Joe to stick to his vision and make this live action Looney Tunes cartoon then odds are we would have gotten a much more better movie out of it as he himself is a Looney Tunes fan and odds are he will hate what Warner Bros are doing to them right now, this is not to say that Warner Bros are one hundred percent in the wrong as they might have seen what he was doing with the film and got cold feet but if that was the case then they should have held test screenings to test which version of the movie will play better there version of or his original version.

Whilst this film does indeed try to force a romance between Damian and Kate the film is at the very least aware enough to point out the fact that there romance is never going to work. This doesn't make it right of course as the two of them just don't work together at all despite the fact that Jenna Elfman and Brendan Fraser have great chemistry together as there romance does come out of nowhere and it does add nothing to the film and while they aren't that good together it is still fun to picture them together as they do have alot of fun scenes together with them just riffing on what the other is doing which in of itself could be argued is the film just outright telling us that these characters should never be together whilst also forcing them to be together. The films villains is of course the chairman of Acme with the character pretty much being this real life cartoon character who thinks he's irresistible to women when in fact he's really not with his plan being wonderfully over the top as his plan is to turn the human race in monkey getting them to make these same products and then turn them back in humans and buy those same products which to be fair to this film isn't that bad of an idea as it's a plan that could only work in a Looney Tunes movie as in any other film that plan would be seen as being far to dumb for it to be taken seriously but because of the fact that this is a Looney Tunes movie and all of the villains in Looney Tunes do have these over the top plans it does make sense for this character to have a really over the top plan and again to be fair to this film we do see him making steps to reach this goal by setting several Looney Tunes villains on our heroes which is a good way to use those character and it makes this character look smart as well.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty seven minuets and forty eight seconds. Which is pretty much the bogstandard running time for a Looney Tunes film as alot of them do have very similar running times to them and to be fair to this film this is a film that does really require that long of a running time as it does have to set up the films main plot with the monkey diamond and both all of its live action characters with this being something that the film just wouldn't be able to do if it was even five minuets shorter and yet here's the thing the film could have also been helped if it was a few minuets longer just allow things like the plot to breathe instead of just rushing along to the next plot point with the film having more then enough plot there to really cover that amount of running time in the first place. With the film not really using its running tome all that wisely as the film doesn't take the time to fully develop its plot de to the fact that the film would rather focus on anything else other then giving the films plot some plot development as there is nothing added to the films plot that makes it feel more developed with this being something that could have been fixed if the film was a few minuets longer with the film being more focused on making some pretty good Brendan Fraser jokes then it is in giving us a well developed plot. The same thing is also true for the films character as while the films Looney Tunes characters don't need any character development as we have the other shorts for that the films human character certainly did and they didn't get any with us knowing as much about any of this films human characters coming out of the film then we did coming out of the film with the makers of this film being more focused on giving out alot of cameos to both human and animated characters that they forgot to give us more well developed characters but I really will admit that this film really does have some really bad pacing to it tho.

So now then as this a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy thats actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With the films comedy even being the best part of the film as the film does tell alot of jokes that do feel right at home in the classic Looney Tunes shorts be it to all of the jokes that they make at the expense of Brendan Fraser to even all of the names that they given the Acme Vp's however the issue is tho is that alot of this films jokes do feel very kid orientated whereas alot of the Looney Tunes cartoons would have jokes for both the kids and for the adults as well with this being something that des seem to be lost in this film. With the best joke in this film being the whole of Area 52 with there being plenty of good gas thrown into that one portion of the film be it Daffy being stuck in liquid for no reason whatsoever to all of the hidden easter eggs to fifties and sixties science fiction films and TV shows I mean they even use archive audio of both David Graham and Peter Hawkins for when the Daleks are on screen with that whole scene just being one small joke after the next with it being something that does help for this film to feel alot like a live action Looney Tunes cartoon with all of the jokes in that scene being the kinds of jokes that those classic Looney Tunes cartoons did do and seeing them done here is something that does prove that the makers of this film really are die hard Looney Tunes fans with the rest of this films jokes being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall for a long time this film was easily considered to be the worst live action Looney Tunes film that was until Space Jam: A New Legacy came out and just destroyed the characters with this film looking all the more better when compared to that film as this film does at the very least try to feel like a live action Looney Tunes cartoon albeit one that's not that good with the film itself not being all that great either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as al of the bad things that re in this very film in this very review and a such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 5 out of 10 from me.
