Hobbs & Shaw Film Review

Despite the Fast & Furious films having been going since 2001 and evolving from being street racing films to now being straight up spy films the franchise had never spawned a spin off film. That was until 2019 when we got our first and so far only spin off film in the franchises history and it's a film that is quite frankly one of the more better recent entries in the franchise as it knows just what kind of film it is and isn't afraid to be exactly that and so then join me as I review the film that has a WWE hall of famer and his cousin The Tribal Chief himself in the same film with the film in question being called simply just "Hobbs & Shaw" enjoy.

The plot of this film is when a virus is created that will kill people in hours it's up to former DSS agent Luke Hobbs and criminal mastermind Deckard Shaw to team up and stop an evil organization from unleashing it on the world. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With the films plot kind of carrying on the spy film trend that the rest of the Fast & Furious films had been going down with both Deckard and Hobbs working for separate people and being forced to work together. With the thing that help to make this films plot work ad well as it does is the fact that it's a plot that doesn't take itself to seriously as the very idea of having cop being forced to work with a criminal in order to save the world is a ridiculous enough idea tat the film doesn't really need to have a super serious plot inorder for it to work it just needs to have a plot that does allow for the characters t have alot of fun with the idea and that's exactly what we got in this film we got a fun plot that knows it's not that good and because of that it does work and while no one comes to any of these movies for the plot as lets be honest here we all go to a Fast & Furious movie for the stunts here the films plot whilst yes it is dumb and it does feel unfocused at times here you do kind of forgive it as you do end up having a really good time with it with the pot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is Dwayne Johnson as Luke Hobbs , Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw and Sir Idris Elba as Brixton Lore. Also starring in this film is Vanessa Kirby as Hattie Shaw , Eiza Gonzalez as Margarita , Dame Helen Mirren as Magdalene "Queenie" Shaw , Eliana Sua as Samantha Hobbs , Roman Reigns as Mateo Hobbs , Cliff Curtis as Jonah Hobbs , Eddie Marsan as Andreiko , Josh Mauga as Timo Hobbs ,John Tui as Kal Hobbs , Lori Pelenise Tuisano as Sefina Hobbs , Rob Delaney as Loeb , Ryan Reynolds as Victor Locke and as the voice of The Eteon Director and Kevin Hart as Dinkley.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. Much like with the films plot no one goes to one of these movies expecting the acting to be good rather we expect it to be passable at best with this being something that does make the acting in this film stand out all of the more as all of this films actors do give us some really good performances and whilst this is understandable for actors like Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson as they have been playing these characters for years at this point in time it's also true for actors like Sir Idris Elba and Vanessa Kirby both of whom are really good in this film. With the best actor in the whole entire film being Jason Statham as he does get to be this cool and cocky character with him clearly having a blast in not only making the film but also in playing this character as well with both him and Dwayne Johnson having some really good chemistry together and just bouncing off of each other beautifully with Jason having this natural charm and charisma about him that makes you want to like a character that would normally be really unlikable with that being something hat does shine through in his performance in this film. With the acting that's in this very film not really being helped but the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this film actors absolutely anything to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

Doing the CGI for this film is Double Negative , Framestore , One Of Us , RISE Visual Effects Studios , Outpost VFX , Crafty Apes , Cantina Creative and Exceptional Minds. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With the film having alot of decent looking effects in it which is something that really isn't new for this franchise as alot of these films do have some really good looking effects in them yet here in this film tho it does feel like there is alot more effects then there is live action footage with it getting to the point where you might as well call this film an animated film. While it does make sense for them to use CGI on things like the action scenes and on the character of Brixton as he is meant to be basically part robot the film will also add in things that they could have done practically with the characters driving past two CGI towers in Moscow which didn't need to be CGI as they could have done with a model shot and it would looked just as good and while it is understandable that the backgrounds would become CGI when a character is inside of a car for example the film also does that when a character is inside of a building and they really didn't need to as the makers of this film could have filmed separate background footage and have that footage be added in in editing and it would look really good with the motto for this film seemingly being "well we have CGI so let's use it" and all that is just make the whole thing look fake whereas if they only used CGI when they needed to and not when they wanted to then it would make the fantastical elements of the film hit all the more harder.

While the main theme for the mainline Fast & Furious films seems to be family and what it means to be a family. Here it seems to be all about the bonds that people forge with each other be it the kind of brotherly bond then Deckard and Hobbs develop over the course of the film or the family bond that Deckard and Hattie have and that Luke and his brother have bottom line being this is a key thing all throughout the film and seeing how it effects different people it different ways is kind of interesting to see as we see that Hattie and Deckard  are fairly close as siblings whereas Luke and his brother hate each ither due to the fact that Luke found out that there father knew that there father was purposefully sending them out on dangerous missions and of course Deckard and Luke don't like each other anyways but are willing to work together for the greater good. This is a theme that whilst it is something that's an extension of the family theme from the Fast & Furious movies it does feel like a new way to tackle that theme as the mainline films even in F9 they just have the characters say the word family and don't really go into that much detail about what it is that makes a family and while it could be argued that this film also does the same thing with its main theme of bonds they do add enough to it that does it make feel well thought and when punch does come to shove you do end up believing that these people would go to these extremes due to how close that they are whereas in the other Fast movies you kind of don't feel that due to the fact that it does feel like that alot of them don't like each other off screen so much so that Dwayne was never going to be in F9 as alot of the main actors didn't like the idea of him headlining this spinoff film but here in this film you do get the feeling that the actors do genuinely like each other and this is something that makes there bonds and there friendships feel more real and come across as being more authentic.

This film does add a previously unheard of and unmentioned sister character for Deckard which just doesn't work as there are times in the main films where having her be present would have made sense an heck they don't even explain why she wasn't helping in in either Fast 7 or Fast 8. While they do yes do the same thing with Luke by having him have this whole extended family they do at the very least explain why his family hadn't appeared in any of the films up until now by having him say that he left his family when his eldest brother stated to blame Luke for there father getting sent to jail even tho Luke was thinking of his siblings it's not much of an explanation but it's better then nothing and it is something that does make sense in the context of the film with even his extended family playing a big role in the films climax. The only way that something like this might have worked would be if they they explained why Hattie wasn't in the previous movies just by having her say something she was on her missions when those fast films where meant to be taking place or that the two of them weren't talking with her blaming Deckard for the death of there brother Owen yes it's not much of a reason as both of them are pretty weak at best but it is still better then nothing and both of them would answer the question of why she wasn't there in those movies as that is something that was always going to be a question the second that Deckard says that she's his sister and while these Fast films have never really been much for continuity they are usually pretty good when it comes to the family side of things outside of the fact that they introduced and unseen and unmentioned brother for Dom in F9. This is something that really could have been fixed with a rewrite of the films script as then it would have allowed the makers of this film the chance to say where this character was and why she wasn't seen or mentioned until now.

Brixton as a character does work in this film as this film is just dumb enough that a character that Deckard killed and is now back as a robot is so stupid that it wouldn't work in any other franchise. Yet due to the fact that he's the villain in a Fast & Furious spin off film he oddly works with him working due to the fact that is such a stupid idea hat you end up kind of buying in to it and getting sucked in to it and while the character doesn't really have a plan as he's jut working for this evil organization that wants the virus so that they can control who who gets killed this is something that does allow for the film to do what it does best and that's give us these funny little moments with both Hobbs and Shaw trying to outwit each other in increasingly over the top ways. With Brixton being as he calls himself a black Superman and yeah he kind of his as he is this unstoppable fighting machine that can predict just what it is that his oppent is going to be doing next and an therefor stop them before they even do it which is such a cool thing for a villain in this franchise to able to do as now it forces our heroes to have out think hm and out muscle him and while the character of Brixton could have been more better as we never really find out why he's evil other then saying that he's like this due to the fact that he saw the worst in people and that's really it which isn't that strong of a reason for him to become essentially the villains sidekick as while he is the main villain in this film he's only doing these things due to the fact that he's working for The Eteon Director who sets himself up as being the main villain for a future film which is happening but there swapping out Shaw with Reyes from Fast X.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly two hour and sixteen minuets and forty two seconds. Which to be fair to this film is pretty much the bogstandard running time for these films to have and while this film doesn't really need to be that long as you very easily could have had this film come in at well under two hours just by trimming down alot of the films long action scenes this film does stop its plot for that matter does still work with this more longer running time this is despite the fact that it does feel like that the films just stops whenever they have a cameo as even tho the film only has three actors cameoing in the film they all take up so much screen time when you could have had there roles be played by any other actor and it would have worked just as well with the film having more then enough plot there to really cover that amount of running time in the first place. With the film not even using its running time all that wisely as the film doesn't take the time to fully develop its plot which in all fairness is something that could also be true for all of the Fast & Furious films as well as they all do put alot more focus on action and stunts rather then plot with it feeling more out of place here due to how good that the film had been in alot of other aspects with it being made clear as day that the makers of this film put more thought and effort into the films cameo roles then thy did n giving this film some of the much needed plot development that it really did need. The same this is also true for the films character development as much like with the other films in this series none of the films characters get any kind of development with the closest one being Hobbs who does end up reconnecting with his family but that's really it with all of the rest of the films characters getting nothing in terms of character development with it being made clear as day that the makers of this film put more thought and effort into the witty back and fourth between Deckard and Hobbs then they did the films character development but i really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.

So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty I in I all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The fact that we have some really good action in this film is somethin that really isn't all that new as this is something that is true for pretty much all of the Fast & Furious films as they do always put more of a focus on action and spectacle then anything else and the same thing is also true here with the two things that let this films action down being the fact that one alot of the action does go on for far to long and the second being the film essentially has to climatic action scenes the first one in Moscow and the second in Samoa and it does get a bit to much at times due to that fact. With the best action scene in the whole entire film being the escape scene in Moscow as we get to see our heroes trying to outwit Brixton and blowup his work place all the while Deckard's sister is trying to get this virus removed from her with things being made complicated when Hobbs and Shaw gets themselves captured and Brixton and his men with the three of them having to fight of dozens of armed men while still trying to escape this one building with this action working because of the fact that it does feel like a climax as everything in the film up until this point had been leading up to this one scene with the scene itself being the typical explosion filled finale that could only work in of these films with the rest of the films action being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall this film is alot of fun to watch ad while it is a shame that F9 ended u getting delayed because of this film it doesn't take away from the fact that this film is one heck of a fun filled ride and one that does prove that these films can be fun and good all at the same time in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now the i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7.5 out of 10 from me.
