Baywatch Film Review

It's not all that uncommon for a TV show to get a movie as it's something that does still continue to happen to this very day. However what alot of those films have in common is the fact that they are based off of universally beloved TV shows the same thing cannot be said for the show that this films is based off of as Baywatch the show show was never a critical darling but it was always a ratings hit with the show being very campy and just embracing that campiness and therefor doing a feature film remake of it does make sense and in 2017 that's exactly what we got and so then join me as as I review the film that tried so hard to Make Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron a comedic double act with the film in question being called simply just "Baywatch" enjoy.

The plot of this film is when drugs and dead bodies start showing up on the beach it's up the lifeguards to find out who is doing it and save there beach. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's  actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really bad. To be frank whilst yes having a bad plot for a film is usually a really bad thing given the fact that the show itself more often then not did have outlandish plots to them here it does make sense that the plot of the film be as outlandishly bad as an episode of the show was as it does show you that the makers of this film did do there homework on what kind of stories work for the show. However this film does take things a bit to extreme as while having an outlandish plot for an episode of a TV show would work as you could very easily follow that one up with several good plots here in the film you only have one chance to tell one good story and the film can't really do it and therefor it does go way more over the top then it what it needed to almost to the point of it being comical and something that you want to laugh at with the best example of this being the fact that everyone loves Mitch for literally no reason which is great for the films more campy tone but plot wise it doesn't really make all that much sense as it's there purely to give Dwayne Johnson an ego boost and that's it with the plot of this film not really being really rather entertaining and as well as not really being really rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. 

Starring in this film is one of this films executive producers Dwayne Johnson as Lieutenant Mitch Buchannon , Zac Efron as Matt Brody , Priyanka Chopra as Victoria Leeds and Alexandra Daddario as Summer Quinn. Also starring in this film is Kelly Rohrbach as C. J. Parker , Jon Bass as Ronnie Greenbaum , Ilfenesh Hadera as Stephanie Holden , Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Sergeant Garner Ellerbee , Rob Huebel as Captain Thorpe , Hannibal Buress as Dave The Tech , Oscar Nunez as Councilman Rodriguez , Amin Joseph as Frankie , Jack Kesy as Leon , Belinda Peregrín as Carmen , Pamela Anderson as Captain Casey Jean Parker and David Hasselhoff as Mitch / The Mentor.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's  actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really bad. The fact that this film does have some really bad acting in it is something that is to expected as much like the plot the show also had some pretty bad acting in it and while that is something that you did expect in the show given who is in this film it's not really something that you wanted to see in this film as all of this films actors just feel like there all doing the bare minimum as it does feel like that alot of them are just doing this film to get a suntan and that's it. With the films best actor being Zac Efron as Matt Brody as while he is still really bad in this film he comes of as being rh least bad actor due to the fact that it does feel like he is giving a performance that is more true to the show with him being fully aware of what type of film that he's in and while he and Dwayne Johnson do have some good chemistry together they don't have good comedic timing with each other which makes it more weird that the film tries to force them into being a comedic double act with Zac doing his best to make the films jokes work and while he is still bad in this film Zac Efron in this film does at least try to give us a good performance with not even his own natural charm being enough to save his performance in this film. With the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely anything to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

Doing the CGI for this film is Hydraulx and the legends and the greats that are currently over at Lola Visual Effects. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's  actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really bad. Whilst yes this film effects are indeed really bad alot of them are bad in a way that makes them fun to laugh at like for example with the reveal of the films title yes the effects in that scene look horrible with it being obvious that the just filmed Dwayne against a green or blue but having these obvious CGI dolphins come up and backflips as the films title is revealed is something that does make you laugh at how bad and over the top those effects are. Whilst yes there are some effects in this film are over the top and cheesy there are alot more that are just flat out bad alike for example the scene where the team has to rescue some part goers from an exploding boat as it's obvious that the makers of this film didn't really light a boat on fire or even have fire in the ocean as all of the fire effects in that scene look really fake with it you being able to tell where the effect ends and the live action footage being as there is this weird hazing around the the fie that makes it look like it wasn't added to the scene properly yet if the films effects teams had a bigger budget and more time to work on the effects then they would have turned out better as this is a film that really didn't need to be an effects heavy movie as the show proved that you can do this show with out alot of effects in it but if the effects companies had more time to work on the effects then they would have looked alot more better and could have been the best part of the film.  

This film did what the 2005 The Dukes Of Hazzard movie did in that it sexed up alot of the shows characters and added in alot of swearing and sex jokes. Just to be this film is rated R whereas the original show much like the original the Dukes Of Hazzard TV show was rated TV-PG and while yes the original show did have beautiful people running in slow motion that's all it had whereas here it felt like that upped all of it up to the point where it might as well be something else entirely as it did feel weird seeing these previous somewhat family friendly characters now swearing like a sailor and it is something that did effect The Dukes Of Hazzard movie as well as there was no need do it as while OK you can't get around showing the female characters running in a bikini in a Baywatch movie but that doesn't mean that you have to have a joke about a character getting his manhood cought in a chair let alone have that joke go on for several minuets. It is shocking that Hollywood thinks that it needs to sex up TV shows that were PG all for n reason as if they want to get the young crowd in and not just the shows original fans making everything more sexy is not the way to do it as the only thing that you need to do is make the movie good and they'll come and watch the film it's the most basic thing to get right and yet time and time again Hollywood fails to do that as there only looking at one aspect of what made the original show work in the first place and not looking at the whole thing, which does result in the film being needlessly more adult as there's nothing in this film that screams that it needed to be Rated R and yet for one reason or another that's what the film ended up being and it just doesn't work this is not to say that an R rated version of Baywatch could work as it could if it was done more of a parody of the show and not just a straight forward remake like it is here in this film.

Whilst yes this film is an action comedy this film has this weird obsession with putting Dwayne Johnson at the centre of every single action scene in the film. While this is something that does make sense for the boat rescue scene as they are trying to rescue people and he is the only one of the boat but for the big show down with Victoria it's mostly him that's doing alot of the heavy lifting with Zac spending alot of the time getting hurt and the rest of the crew are on another boat trying to rescue a kidnapped business owner this is something that didn't need to happen this way as the film could have had Dwayne's character Mitch get knocked and have Zac Efron step up and take down the main bad guy with him working as a team with Dwayne. Yet due to the fact that Dwayne is an executive producer on the film it means that he put himself front and centre of the films action and while yes the films action does look as good as it was ever going to given the fact that it is a film about lifeguards it does make the action feel weird when they all play out the same with Mitch being the one that gets to do all of the cool stuff while the rest f the films characters just essentially stand there and do nothing, it wouldn't be that bad if there was more then two action scenes and they did take the time to mix them up and have a different character play the lead role in that action scene like for example Ronnie could have more of a comedy based action scene which would suit his character perfectly but they don't and even when the film does a chase scene it's Mitch that takes out the main guy in that scene and not Zac or Alexandra Daddario when it would have given the makers of this film is a chance to show us what each member brings to the team in a fight.

The films main villain Victoria Leeds was a decent villain for the kind of dumb film that this film really is. As she is a more and very attractive woman who uses her busisness smarts and charm to get what she wants this is something that does work for her character as while you can tell right away that she's the main villain of the film the fact that she is so charming and she is so likable in the first place does make it all the more believable as to why the main characters wouldn't right away pinpoint her as being a villain and while she does do all of the typical mobster villain things like buying alot of key people in order to get what she wants this is still something that makes her work as a villain as even the original show wasn't all to creative with it's villains and how they did them. With her goal in this film being to make the entire beach her own private property to smuggle in drugs which OK fair enough isn't that good of a plan but for the type of film that this is it is something that does work for her character with the only thing that doesn't work being the fact that even tho she is meant to be this really smart and really beautiful woman she doesn't really use that to get what she wants as she gets angry and people refuse to give her something and yet if she used her femininity then that is something that wouldn't be an issue as she would have them eating out of the palm of her hand and given the fact that this film is R rated it is something that they very easily could have done but in all fairness the character does still work as Priyanka Chopra does still make for a decent villain with her being very entertaining to watch in the film but the villain herself while she does work for this film still really could have been alot more better.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly two hours and one minuet and twenty two seconds. Which is about thirty minuets longer then what this film really needed to be as there is no need for this film to be anywhere close to two hours long as you very easily could have cut this film down to one hour and thirty minuets just by cutting down on the films action scenes as alot of them do go on for quite awhile and heck if this film did come in at under two hours without credits then it would have allowed for the film to get more screenings and thus have a stronger chance of earning more money and yet for one reason another film ended up being way longer then what it needed to be with the film having just about the right amount of plot there to cover that amount of running time in the first place. As even this long running time the film still doesn't take the time to fully develop its plot which is fine for the show and yet it's not something that works for the film as the film only has one chance to tell a decent and well developed plot and yet with a show you have countless hours do that and yet here in this film they don't do that with the makers of this film putting alot more thought and effort into the films cameo roles then they did in giving the plot some much needed plot development. This is something that's also true for the films characters as none of them apart from Matt Brody get any kind of character development as he is the only one that's made to be this flawed character with the rest of the team being presented as being these picture perfect characters who can do no wrong and when you do a character like that then they have no where to go bout down whereas with Matt he has to learn to be apart of a team something which he could only do through the course of this film with the makers of the film putting more thought and effort into making Mitch look good that they end up not really giving alot of the characters some much needed character development but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.

So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty pretty bad. The film itself doesn't really have alot of laugh out loud funny moments in the film as the film does give us the unfunny duo of Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron and there comedic timing with each other is just off with this not really bein helped by the fact that alot of the films jokes just aren't that funny with them all being unfunny adult jokes that just don't work as the film doesn't make them funny with the film even spending time making fun of the show it's meant to be a remake off like having the characters call out that C.J. always seems to be running in slow motion which could have been funny except they do nothing it. With the best joke in the film not even being one joke as it's a running joke as every time Mitch wants to talk to Matt he'll just call him a random name one of which being High School Musical and granted this joke isn't laugh out loud funny it is a joke that will get a chuckle out of people as all it is is Mitch just roasting on this kid at every chance he gets with it being made funnier by the fact that Zac Efron himself gave Dwayne the list of names to call him with this being the only time that these two are funny together as alot of there other jokes are trying to to hard to be funny whereas this running joke whilst it's no laugh out loud funny is a pretty cute joke with the rest of the films jokes being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.  

Overall whilst this film does feel true to the tone and campiness of the show what works as a TV show doesn't always work as a feature film and this film is a very good example of that as the film itself just really doesn't work as it feel like it's trying to hard to be good instead of just being a good fun and campy film in it's own right in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 5.5 out of 10 from me.
