Thor Film Review

Back in the day the MCU was an unstoppable beast and while alot of the early films really weren't the best as some of them are lackluster. When they knocked it out of the park they really did knock it out off the park with alot of there Phase One films not being big hits at the box office but doing really well enough for people to take notice with the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today being a really good example of one of these lackluster films and so then join me as I review the film that is to date the only film to have Thor written well with the film in question being called simply just "Thor" enjoy.

The plot of this film is when he his banished to earth and his powers are taken from him Thor has to work how to get home and find a way to stop his brother Loki before it's far to late. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about thew actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. To be frank alot of this films issue when it comes to its plot could also be found in ither MCU movies at the time as they were just starting out but even so you can tell that his films plot is alot more weaker then say for example Iron Man or The Incredible Hulk. As while there is thought and effort put into this films plot the actual plot itself is a bit on the weak side as the film doesn't really spend alot of time on it's plot with alot more screen time being devoted to Thor's adventures on Earth which whilst they are key to certain aspects of the film we don't need to see everything that he gets up to on Earth we just need to see enough to get across the point that he's changing as a character and yet the film does focus more on that then on the actual plot with this making the films plot feel alot more like an afterthought when it's the very thing that people could remember from this film and yet the films plot isn't being as fully fleshed out as it should have done, this is something that could be true for alot of Phase One films as well and it's not an issue that's exclusive to that this film but those other films had to set up who the hero is and show us how they got there powers here tho due to who Thor is the film doesn't need to do that and therefor alot more more focus could have been given to the films plot with the plot of this film really being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is Chris Hemsworth as Thor , Natalie Portman as Jane Foster and Tom Hiddleston as Loki. Also starring in this film is Sir Anthony Hopkins as Odin , Stellan Skarsgård as Erik Selvig , Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis , Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson , Colm Feore as Laufey , Sir Idris Elba as Heimdall , Ray Stevenson as Volstagg , Tadanobu Asano as Hogun , Joshua Dallas as Fandral , Jaimie Alexander as Sif , Rene Russo as Frigga , Adriana Barraza as Isabela Alvarez , Maximiliano Hernández as Jasper Sitwell and Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton / Hawkeye.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about thew actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. Given whom is starring in this film it's not really all that surprising that the film does have some really good acting in it with the thing that does lower the acting quality down a little bit being the acting more from the side characters as alot of them are a bit to over the top as while yes this is a comic book movie and therefor going over the top with the acting does make sense in this regard this film has the actors go over the top alot of the time and it does become a bit distracting. With the best actor in this film being Chris Hemsworth as Thor which granted could be seen as being a cliche but in all fairness he really does look like Thor almost as if the character was ripped right out of the comic books with Chris giving us a performance that is not only worthy of Thor but also a good performance in general with him having alot of chemistry with Tom Hiddleston to the point where you do buy them as brothers which is something that would have been really hard to pull off and yet Christ pulls it off really well and while he's not that good when it comes to the films more dramatic and romantic scenes when it comes to the films action and comedy scenes that is where his performance does shine through with him making Thor a flawed person somethin which does shine through in his final performance. With the acting that's in this film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

Doing the CGI for this film is BUF , Digital Domain , Fuel VFX , Luma Pictures , Whiskytree and Evil Eye Pictures. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about thew actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. The fact that this film does have some good looking CGI in it is something that even at this point in the MCU's lifetime was to be expected as both Iron Man film and The Incredible Hulk had some really good looking effects in them with this film really being no different with there being alot of thought and effort put into this films effects. As while some of the films effects haven't really aged all that well as you can tell when the film is using digital doubles for its characters alot of the time when it comes to something like Asgard itself which was fully done in CGI it does look really good granted it's not going to look as good as say Pandora for example but for the time that this film came out in and the fact that the MCU was just getting started it does look really impressive with even the giant creature that Loki sends down at the end of the film still looking as good today as it did back in 2011, bottom line here the Thor movies where always going to be effects heavy movies just due to the fact that the films main character is a literal god and that does mean having to fully animate all of his powers but at the same time it would have been nice if there was some practical effects in this episode as you could have filmed practical footage of Chris Hemsworth taking off that could have been used in the film and you could have used stunt doubles for then he and Loki have to ride a horse and yet the makers of this film us digital doubles and they look really bad.

The key theme behind this film is this film is bonds be it those that you have with your family , your friends or in this case a potential love interest. This is something that we see all over the film as we see Thor and Odin's bond get broken by Thor himself when he acts irrationally and attacks another planet putting the lifes of his friends and his brother Loki in danger at the same time with Odin doing the one thing that a father figure would always hate to do and that's kick his son granted this was teach his son to respect and love life but it is something that also hurt Odin just as much as the argument that he had with Thor did and yet it was also something that was needed to mend there bond as then Thor could learn what Odin has learned. With the films even showing us how Thor's action at the start of the film affect his bond with his brother and friends with his bond with Loki already being fractured by the time the film starts proper with the events of the films not really helping matters which is fair enough ad Loki is of course the films main villain and the one with his friends isn't really tested as they all forgive him right away but what s interesting is seeing him form a bond with Jane and making new friends on Earth as ow he has to win all of them over and convince them that he's not a crazy person whilst also falling for Jane himself this is something that is key to making the plot of the film work as Thor does need to understand what it is like to be mortal and not have super powers and seeing him struggle with that whilst also thriving a bit on earth as he does have a friends that are willing to help him when they find out that everything that he's been saying is true and he does begin to fall in love with Jane with his bonds with them being stronger due to the fact that he has changed and had come to appreciate life something which he didn't do at the start of the film.

As was mentioned at the start of the review this film is the best written that Thor is as starting with The Avengers the character would be given alot more jokes. With him loosing the Shakespearian quality to him that is right here in the writing of the character in this film as this is a character that OK you can get away with having jokes with him but he should never ever be the butt of the joke he would always be the one telling the joke and it would only be at the right time as he does have more of a softer side to him something which it could be argued down come in Avengers: Endgame when he gets so depressed that he just gives up and even here we get to see him bonding with Jane over what she would call science with him explaining to her that on Asgard science and magic are the same thing with even his interaction with Loki being a good example of this as well. Yet in the sequels and other MCU films those are all toned down in favor of joke and all this does is make the character not only less interesting but also more of a joke as why should the audience care about the character if the makers of the films aren't giving us a reason to care about him and while having a few jokes made about him is fine the character is now written in such a way that even in his own films he is the comic relief character and the makers of the films now have t bring in other characters to make him look better because of the fact that they've spent countless films making him look weak and writing him poorly the Thor that we saw in Love and Thunder would easily get beaten by this Thor as this version of the characters is the more stronger character both in terms of a physical strength and interms of writing as the makers of this film actually cared enough to make him a decently well written characters in the first place.

Whilst alot of the MCU films did and some would argue still do have a problem when it comes to creating there villains the one time that they got it right in Phase One really was with this films villain Loki. As he just steals the show alot of the time as he does spend alot of the time in this film manipulating people from behind the scenes just trying to get on the Throne of Asgard with alot of people all knowing that if he does become the king then it would be all over for them with the film even going to great lengths to show us just how far that Loki is willing to go to reach his goal with him first getting Thor banished to earth which is then played of as him wanting to save the lives of Thor's friends but looking back on it is more to save his own skin. When he finds out that Thor is alive he the goes to earth to trick Thor into staying there which almost works as he is that good of lier and yet he's not prone to getting his hands dirty as he does attack several people in Asgard and even fights his own brother and while his reasoning for being evil is a sad one as he just wats to appease the person that he thought was his father even tho his father Odin took him from his home in The Land Of The Frost Giants this is something that does make him being evil make all the more sense as we now have a character that for a long time truly believed he was of royal blood only to find out decades later that everything he once believed to be true is infact a lie with him and Thor not even being half brothers and yet in the characters latter appearances the fact that he is a half giant was removed from his character all together even tho it's part of what made him an interesting character in the first place, Loki himself is a character that doesn't really need to get into a fight with Thor to prove that he is the strongest character in the film as what makes him strong is his mind and therefor if Thor wanted to beat Loki he had to be smarter then him which is something that does lead to Thor winning the day.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and fifty four minuets and fifty seconds. When it comes to the Phase One films this was close to being the bogstandard running time for this films as alot of them did have shockingly similar running time to them however tho alot of them also had to tell an origin story of how this person got there powers in the first which is something that would earn that running time all the more and yet this film doesn't have to do that as Thor was given his powers by his father prior t the film starting up proper with the film instead using alot of the scene on Earth as padding as we don't need to see what Thor got up in the hospital and nor do we need the scene where he appears shirtless for literally no reason whatsoever with the film having more then enough plot there to really cover that amount of running time in the first place. The film doesn't really use it's running time all that wisely in one regard as the film doesn't take the time to fully develop its plot as the film is alot more focused on showing us Thor's life on earth and the people around him reacting to him being there which is great and could have made for some fun scenes but the film does nothing with them and with the film not really adding anything to the plot of the film in the first place with the makers of this film being more focused on giving us a scene with a shirtless Thor then they were in giving us plot development. The film does however spent the time to give it's main characters some character development with the best example of this being Thor himself as he does have to go from someone who is selfish and greedy and for lack of a better term hungry for blood to someone who does care about about his fiends and family with this being something that he does learn at various stages of this film but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho. 

So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in his very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was OK at best. With alot of this films action being at best lackluster this is something that doe make sense as this film director Sir Kenneth Branagh hadn't directed action films this is despite the fact that he had starred in Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets which is an action and that kind of inexperience really does show as as he doesn't really do anything new or creative with the film action this despite the fact that the films main hero is a literal god. With the films best action scene being the entire third act of the film as while it is just as average as the rest of the films action was we do get to see the fight takes place both on Earth and on Asgard which is something that does make the action feel all the more bigger as we do get to see Thor and his friends take on a giant metallic creature that Loki had sent down to kill Thor and his friends for good with it being during this action scene that Thor once again becomes worthy of his own powers with the fact that he does send a good chunk of that scene on earth being mortal is a good way to add drama to the scene as now he could die and yet he doesn't with the fight with Loki on Asgard being about as good as it could have bee given the fact that neither Christ Hemsworth or Ton Hiddleston had done an action scene before with the rest of the films action scenes being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall out of alot of the Phase One films this one is quite lackluster and yet despite that it is still a watchable film with there being clear thought and effort out into the film with being obvious that the makers of this film got Thor right when all of the other films didn't in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7 out of 10 from me.
