The Avengers 2012 Film Review

Superhero team up team up movies are always a really difficult thing to get right and when one does get it right it should be cheered. Such was the case with the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today as when this film came it became a huge box office hit grossing well over a billion dollars at the box office and spawning several sequels with the latest one due out this very year and so then join me as I review the film that is called Avengers Assemble over in the UK with the film is question being called simply just "The Avengers" enjoy.

The plot of this film is when Loki steals the Tesseract and uses it's power to bring an army from space to earth it's up to Tony Stark , Steve Rogers , Bruce Banner , Thor , Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff to stop him before it's far to late. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. This plot does to do the one thing that alot of superhero team up movies fail to do and that's give the heroes a bigger reason to join together with the films plot being the very thing that drives all of the characters actions and motivates them to learn to work together. Whilst yes this films plot isn't as good as the plots of the other Avengers movies as it doesn't tell an epic enough tale but one could also argue that that is kind of the point of the film as the whole reason for the film working is the fact that we do get to see these heroes teaming up to take on a threat that is bigger then any of them and part of that does include having what is a more smaller scale plot and yet eve with this in mind the films plot oddly enough feels more epic due to the fact that it is this more smaller scale plot as we have aliens from other worlds all coming to earth to take it over and that is something that does make this films plot feel all the more epic and while the films plot could have been alot more stronger in some aspects for the first live action Avengers movie this plot was alot more better then what it really had any right to be with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark / Iron Man and Chris Evans as Steve Rogers / Captain America. Also starring in this film is Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner / Hulk , Chris Hemsworth as Thor , Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow , Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton / Hawkeye , Tom Hiddleston as Loki , Stellan Skarsgård as Erik Selvig , Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill , Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson , Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts , Maximiliano Hernández as Jasper Sitwell ,  Paul Bettany as the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S. and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The fact that this films acting is as good as it is does come down to two things the first of which being the fact that this films writer and director Joss Weadon does know how to get a good performance out of all of his actors with this skill being proven again in this film and the second reason being the fact that this films actors are a bunch of really good actors in there own right with alot of them having played there characters since the very start of the MCU and would therefor have a good grasp on how best to play them in any given scene. With the best actor in this film quite easily being Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark / Iron Man as when I see all of the other films actors yes they would go on to be there characters to alot of people but with Robert he is the only one who is Tony Stark and because of that he is able to bring alot of himself to the role with this being something that does make his performance in any of the MCU films that he is and in this film all the more fun to watch as while you never really know just what kind of performance that your going to be getting what can be said is that the performance will always be worth watching and will always be good with it being obvious that he does have a twinkle in his eye when he plays this character with this being something that really does come through in his performance. With the acting that's in this film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say there lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

Doing the CGI for this film is Cantina Creative , Digital Domain , Evil Eye Pictures , Fuel VFX , Hydraulx , Industrial Light & Magic , Kidz Korner Studio , Lidar Services , Lola Visual Effects , Luma Pictures , Modus Fx , New Deal Studios , Perception , Scanline VFX , The Base Studio , The M Group , Whiskytree and Wētā FX. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The fact that this film does gave some really good CGI in it is something that really isn't all that surprising as there are alot of good effects companies working on this film all of whom did quite clearly put in there best work on this film. As while there are a few dodgy looking effects shot like the lift cables near the start of the film that is something that could be chalked up to the makers of this film not really willing to spend alot of time and effort on making those look as good as they could have done as they are only screen for a few seconds where as an effect like The Hulk for example is of course on screen for longer then that and with that in mind they did and do go out of the way in making him look as good as they could have done as while he is mostly kept in shadow for alot of the film when he does appear in the films third act fight he does look really good and while he would of course look better in other Avengers that doesn't mean that the effect for him in this film is bad with the same thing also being true for Tony's Iron Man suit as that suit does look really good and while the Chitauri army have nothing about there design that makes them stand out from one another they do still look pretty good as an effect.

Let's be real here there is one thing that this film got right that the 2017 Justice League film got wrong and that's the fact that this film gave the characters a reason both personal and not a reason to be on this team. As all of the members of this team have a reason to be there and a reason to want to stop Loki outside of the fact that he's trying to take over the world as Steve wants to get the Tesseract off of him , Thor wants to take him home to face punishment for crimes the bottom line being all the members of this team have a reason to want to fight Loki whereas in the Justice League in both cuts of it there is no reason for any of the heroes to want to face that films big bad therefore when they do decide to all come together it's not out of a want to do what's right it's because of the fact that the plot demands that they team up together which is just alot less interesting. To hit this point home even further is the fact that The Avengers at the start f the film don't really like each other all that much with all of them in small ways stepping on the others twos with this of course leading to the big blow off where they all do air there grievances with each other all the while Loki's mean attack the helicarryer something which wouldn't have happened if just one of them had stopped arguing with each other for a split second whereas in the Justice League movie there's none of that with all getting along with each other right from the word go and while the directors cut does somewhat rectify this by having Bruce Wayne being forced to try and get on Aquaman's good side before he agrees to join them it doesn't change the fact that all of the team already like each other when a team like this would have people who have bigger egos then others and those egos would indeed come into conflict with the others, this is something that we do see happen in this film and the film is better off for it as it does give us the chance for the members of this team to learn to work as a team.

Whilst there is alot of good things to be found in this film sadly one of them is not the films opening as alot of that opening whilst it is important to the films plot is also really dull and boring to watch . As alot of the time all we are watching is just characters talking to each other with there being very few glimpses of what it is that we are going to be getting in the rest of the film as when the films opening does indeed want to be fun and interesting like with Loki taking control of both Hawkeye and Selvig it can be interesting as now we have to see Loki walk right out of the front door of SHIELD all the while no one suspects that anything's wrong but the fact that it took such a long time to get to that point is just odd as while both Sam Jackson and Tom Hiddleston are great actors and seeing them act together is always going to be good but the scene itself isn't that good as it's just to set up something that we already knew in Thor that being that Loki is a bad guy and that's it and heck even the post credits scene of that movie even hinted at Loki being at SHIELD therefor to see them repeat the same things and tell us the exact same things was just pointless but thankfully tho after that large amount of nothing of a scene it does pick up as we do get to see Hawkeye sneaking Loki out of SHIELD only to be caught by Maria which des raise the question of how alot of the other staff that were still there didn't really notice anything but that's neither here nor there with that part of the opening firmly setting up that Maria could have been a good and strong character if she was used well in other MCU films as here we do get to see that she is very observant and yet nothing is done with her in the other films despite the fact that this films opening does set her up to be a really cool character in her own right. 

One of the things that alot of people seem to agree on when it comes to alot of comic book movies is the fact that nine times out of ten the villain is usually the more weaker part of the film. Thankfully this is something that is not true with Loki as while he is not as good as Thanos was he is still being a good first villain for this team to face with it making sense that it would take all of them to take him down as now it is not just him it's an entire army and while he is the head of that army pretty much the team would still to go through them to get to him which is something that they wouldn't be able to do if it was just one of them as it would have been two much for one one members of The Avengers but all of them it's not that much of a problem. Heck even his plan in this film is something that does somewhat make sense as in this film he just wants to take over the world which OK granted is a cliche plan for any villain to have but seeing the lengths that Loki is willing to go to to reach that goal is what makes him stand out as we see that he does have to put in the work not only to get Thanos to convince him to let him have the Chiturai army in the first lace but he also has to go and capture people and try and convince the people of earth that he's a good guy something which he does fail in doing but even then that's apart of his bigger plan to get the Avengers to capture him so that he can start playing them off against other all the while he's there secretly getting Bruce more and more angry all so he can just walk off of the helicarryer and make earth his new home. This is somethin that does prove that Loki is a smart person as he's always thinking three steps ahead of everyone else with it only being when they find a way to outwit him that they then start to get the upper hand but it doesn't change the fact that Loki had up until that point really pushed and challenged our heroes with this being something that every great villain needs to do as that helps to make the hero much more of a better hero as they've had a strong villain to overcome.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly two hours and twenty two minuets and fifty four seconds. Which to be fair to this film is pretty much the bogstandard running time for one of these Avengers films in the first place with the film even needing to be this long as it does have alot of things to set as while it doesn't have to set all of the characters as the other films did that it does have to set up why they are helping SHIELD out in the first place and it does have to set up why Loki is mean to be this big bad with this being something that the film wouldn't be able to do if the film was a little bit shorter as something would fall through cracks and while you could argue that that something in this case is the films plot there is still alot of love and effort into making this films plot work with its running time with the film even having the right amount of plot there to cover that amount of running time in the first place. However tho despite this film having a longer running time it still doesn't really use it's running time all that wisely as the film doesn't take the time to fully develop it's plot with the film having alot of scene in the it that don't add anything to the plot like as an example the scene in Germany wasn't all that needed as all it does is re-establish the same thing that the opening of the film already established that being that Loki is a bad guy and while that scene does lead to Iron Man , Thor and Captain America meeting for the first time it still doesn't make the Germany scene needed with it being made crystal clear that the makers of this fil were alot more focused on making Captain America the but of alot of the jokes then they were n giving the plot some much needed plot development. The films characters it could be argued do fair somewhat better in this regard as while alot of them do get there character development in other films prior to this one alot of the films newer character who really did need some character development don't get any which is sadly true for Phil Coulson and he needed it more then most due to the fact that it's his death that causes the team to work together and yet the makers of this film don't give him any with it being made crystal that the makers of this film cared more about making sure that we knew that Loki was the bad guy then they did about giving the characters character development but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.

So now then as this an action that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's that actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. This was something that was quite surprising as by all rights this films action should have been really difficult to pull off due to how many characters that the film had to juggle and yet all of them do get all the screen time that they need t show us just what it is that that they can do in an action scene with it even showing us what each member of the team brings to the team in a fight. With the best example of this also being in the films best action scene the Battle Of New York as there we get to see al of The Avengers standing side by side for the first time in a fight whilst getting on an army of thousands all by themselves and yet because of the fact that they get to work as a team they manage to handle the threat quite easily with the only real struggle being when then big ships drop of more soldiers with it even being in this one fight scene that we not only get the cool spinning shot with all of the heroes together as one for the first time but we all get the cooler one shot where we see each member of the team doing what they do best with each one effectively having the scene to the next character and when thing get complicated when its decided that a nuclear bomb will be dropped on New York Nick Fury then gets in on the action and tries to top the plane carrying the bomb from taking off which does give our heroes another threat as now they have to find a way to dal with the bomb and the army at the same time with the rest of the films action being just as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. 

Overall this is a comic book movie that's not really afraid to be anything other then a comic book movie and it works because of it as while yes this movie could be seen as being dumb and cheesy but the films works because of the fact that it's a dumb and cheesy film and isn't afraid to be anything more then that in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things hat are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7.5 out of 10 from me.
