The Addams Family 2 Film Review
The Addams Family are a group of characters that really do need no introduction as they have been starring in films and TV shows since the 60's and in comic strips since the late 30's yet it took until 2019 for them to get there first ever animated movie. Whilst that movie was at the very least somewhat passable the same thing absolutely can't be said for the film that i'm going to be talking to you all today and so then join me as I review the film that for some reason keeps Wednesday as it's main character with the film in question being called simply "The Addams Family 2" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when he fears that his family is becoming distant from each other Gomez organizes a family road trip where they have to deal with a lawyer who wants to take Wednesday away from them for good. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that good. With the films plot at best being weak as the film doesn't devote alot of time to the plot with Gomez wanting the family to become close again even tho literally nothing in the film hinted that they were falling apart. With the films plot instead focuses more on Wednesday possibly not being Gomez's and Morticia's kid which is a plot line that is just so stupid that it makes you wonder why the makers of this film thought that it was a good idea as on paper that plot line should have worked and would have worked really well if it was a subplot but with it being the main plot of the film it is something that does fall apart the second you begin to question. With the more interesting plot being the one with Gomez wanting the family to be close again as even tho there was nothing in the film that even hinted at them growing apart Gomez as a character has always held his family close to his heart therefor it would make sense for him to want them to be closer as a family but that plot line isn't allowed to be as good as it could have been as the film drops it all together one scene after it gets started with the plot of this film not really being really rather entertaining and nor is it really rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Oscar Isaac as Gomez Addams , Charlize Theron as Morticia Addams and Chloë Grace Moretz as Wednesday Addams, Also starring in this film is Nick Kroll as Uncle Fester , Javon Walton as Pugsley Addams , this films co-director and co-producer Conrad Vernon as Lurch and The Spirit Who Haunts The Addams' House , Bill Hader as Cyrus Strange , Brian Sommer as Big Bad Ronny , Wallace Shawn as Mr. Mustela , Ted Evans as Pongo , Cherami Leigh as Ophelia , Snoop Dogg as Cousin Itt and Bette Midler as Grandmama Addams.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that good. The fact we manage to have acting in this film that is pretty bad does say more about the makers of this film then the actors starring in the film as we know from other films and TV shows that this films actors can turn in a good performance and yet here it felt like they were directed to be as bland and boring as humanly possible as not one of them sound like that they actually want to be there with time sounding like they would rather be quite literally anywhere else then starring in this film. With the best actor in this film being Chloë Grace Moretz as Wednesday Addams as much like with the rest of this films actors she to does sound bored and uninterested but she sounds the least bored and the least uninterested with her making the fact that she does sound dull and bored being apart of who Wednesday is as a character with that helping her performance in the film but of course if she was directed alot better both she and the rest of this films actors would be able to turn in a great performance with Chloe sounding like the perfect voice for a more modern animated version of the Wednesday Addams character which is something that does shine through in her performance. With the acting in this film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does help to hurt the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the animation for this film is the legends and greats that are currently over at Cinesite Animation and Creative Capers Entertainment. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that good. The fact that this films animation feels like a huge step down when compared to the previous films animation really does say something and it's actually not the animation studios fault as usually you have four years at the most to make one animated film with this film from start to finish it was a little under two years. This is something that explain why the films animation isn't that good even when not being compared to the first films animation as alot of the films backgrounds do look dull and uninteresting and the unique looking character designs that helped to make the previous film stand out here just look off putting and while there are some pretty ice looking visuals in the film the films overall quality of animation what they could do with the animation feels like a complete rush job as there is nothing creative being done in this film from an animation standpoint with even the characters not having alot of nice and fluid movements to them and heck there's not even one single scene in the film where the animation does get to stand out as alot of it would have to have been rushed to meet the films very very close release date whereas if the makers of this film did have those extra couple of years to complete the films animation then there is s good chance that it might have look marginally better then what it does do.
Whereas the previous film took more of its inspiration from the 1991 movie this film takes more of an inspiration from the 1973 The Addams Family Animated Series Even down to having a very similar set up where the family are going on a road trip in a camper van like vehicle it is odd that the makers of this film would choose to look at that show for it's inspiration as that show not only isn't that well remembered it's not even that well liked granted it is more liked then The New Addams Family but not only alot of people will remember or even know of the 1973 series as it was such a short lived show only lasting around a couple of handful of episodes before not being brought back for future episodes and yet this is the series that the makers of this film chose to look at for plot ideas. Heck it would made more sense for them them to look at something like the original show or even the TV reunion movie as both of them had plots that would have been perfect for this movie and heck the first movie even ended with them doing a shot for shot recreation of the series iconic intro but in a way it does make sense for the makers of this film to look at that little known animated Addams show as this does mean that they do get to open up the world of this film a little bit and have more crazy characters in the film or it would if they they actually did something like that in the film but they don't as much like with the previous film they make Cousin Itt the character that all of the family wants to be with and shove him down our throats which was cute for a joke in the first film but they over play that card in this film and it stops us from meeting new characters that we might like all of the sake of of them repeating the same joke in that it's an inaudible Snoop Dogg playing him and that's the only reason that he's in the film.
For some odd reason the makers of this film made Wednesday the main character of the film again and while this is something that des make sense in the Wednesday TV series as she is the title character of that show for this movie it would have been nice if someone literally any other member of the family got to be the main character. As while it was Uncle Fester who was the main character of the two nineties live action movies those movies had enough charm to them and were actually good enough to pull it off whereas here with this film all we get is the same thing that we got with the same character in the previous film only now instead of her being upset at Morticia for no reason she's more upset at Gomez. Where as if someone like Morticia was made to be the main character then we would have been given the chance to see something new as none of The Addams Family movies have had be the main character of the plots before even in the last film she was more of a side character in Wednesdays plot and yet for one reason or another film just keeps Wednesday as it's main character with even Pugsley getting less screen time n this film then he did in the previous film just because the Wednesday character is popular with kids doesn't mean that she has to be the main character in this movie as the movie would have worked even better with Gomez as the main character due to the fact that it was his idea for the family to go on a road trip in the first place and while it it did have something to do with Wednesday it doesn't change the fact that it was Gomez that thought up the idea himself and even went to great extremes to keep it going and yet because f the fact that he's not all that popular of a character his far more interesting plot gets shafted for Wednesdays boring one and Wednesday gets to be the main character again even tho she was just the main character one film prior.
Villain wise the film does fair somewhat more better then the previous film as Cyrus Strange does make for a more interesting villain then Margaux Needler. As Cyrus does go to great lengths to try and manipulate Wednesday into giving over the formular for turning animals into people and gave then stay that way permanently which to be fair to this film is a decent enough end goal granted it's not as good as wanting there gold or wanting to see Uncle Fester dead or as in the case of the previous film just wanting them them gone because they ruin your perfect image but given the fact that this film had a short two year production cycle it is a wonder that he turned out as good as he did in the first place as he very easily could have been a generic villain. Whilst yes granted there are hints of that still in the film as the character himself doesn't make himself known until well into the films third act after only appearing in the films pre-title sequence when he does show up as the main villain he does leave a small impact on the the film as we do get to see just how truly evil that he is with it ben revealed that the family that he has with him that the family think is his wife and daughter it turns out are people that he made from animals with him only using them to try and get them and stay that way forever and while granted there is no end of the world type of threat with him the same thing could also be true for quite literally all of the villains that the family have et in all of their films and TV shows with Cyrus being a somewhat interesting due to the fact that he is more then willing to breakup a family just to get what he wants with the thing being that it almost works as he does almost get the formular from Wednesday with it only being his own greed to rub it into her that spurs her to accept Gomez and Morticia as he true parents with Cyrus even admitting that really he faked the DNA results he gave her which is a good villain move.
Now then this film has / had an exact grant total running time of exactly one hour and thirty three minuets and ten seconds. This is something that was pretty much the bogstandard running time for these two animated Addams Family films as the previous film did have a similar running time to it and while that film really did need it's running time to be this long as it did have alot of things to both set up and introduce this film doesn't and therefor it could have told it's entire plot in well under one hour and twenty minuets as alot of the stuff with the family visiting locations in America is nine times out of ten just filler as it adds nothing to the plot out pf the film outside of seeing Fester's Octopus mutation getting worse and worse but that's with with the film having more then enough plot there to cover that amount of running time in the first place. Yet as was to be expected this fil really doesn't use its running time all that wisely as this film really doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as the film doesn't take the time to fully develop it's plot with the films plot remining awfully thin all throughout the film as the makers of this film add nothing to it's main plot to make it feel more well thought out something which they could have done during any one of the scene with the family just enjoying there holiday together and it would have worked out just well with the makers of this film putting more care and thought into making sure that we think that Cousin Itt is cool then they do into giving us a well developed plot. The same thing is also true for the films characters development as none of the films characters including those that are returning from the previous film get any sort of character development even Pugsley who got no character development in the previous despite him having a major subplot in that film once again gets no character development in this film and it's the same thing for all of the films characters with the makers of this film being more bothered about making Wednesday the main character then they are about giving the characters some much needed character development but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty average at best. While there are some decent jokes in this film as there were in the previous film alot of this films jokes just feel forced and unfunny and best and the ones that aren't just flat out rent good and yet when you look back at the 1991 film that film is still gut bustingly funny to this very day whereas all of this films jokes were dated a year after the film came out and have only gotten worse with age. With the films best joke being a quick easter egg that not alot of people would have noticed as when Wednesday and Lurch are looking at a sign trying to work out which one will take them to this one town there trying to get to the films cuts to the sign and all of the locations on the sign are all horror film locations like for example we have Crystal Lake , Haddonfield and Elm Street all on the sign which for someone who loves those movie it was nice to see them get some love very it's not a thing that alot of people would have noticed as it's not on screen for very long and yet its the only joke that will get a decent chuckle out of alot of people watching this film and yet the kids who are watching this film unless they love eighties slasher films won't find it funny in the slightest as the rest of the film doesn't have jokes that they will find that funny and that is something that the makers of this film should have done with the rest of the films of jokes not being all that good in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall it really doesn't need saying but this film is nothing more then generic mediocre trash that deserves to be forgotten about as while there was a clear attempt and love for the franchise in the previous film in this film it does feel like all of that went right out of the window in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well a all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review an as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 3 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in tis very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
