Spider-Man: Brand New Day Film SPOILER FILLED Film Review
Four solo Spider-Man films that is how films that Tom Holland has now officially been playing Spider-Man this is of course not counting the characters appearances in other MCU films. This does actually make him the lonest serving Spider-Man actor when it comes to appearing in the movies regardless of what people might think of this in a good or negative way that is still quite the feet to reach with his latest Spider-Man film actually just being released and well you all just knew that I had to check it out the very chance that I got and so then join me as I review the film that had a MAJOR spoiler accidentally revealed a few short days ago with the film in question being called simply just "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" enjoy.
The plot of this film is some time after the events of No Way Home Peter Parker is living as Spider-Man 24/7 with his new of life when something starts effect him and when a new villain arrives on the scene. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that he actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The films plot is about as good as the plot in Homecoming was which is something that does kind of work as this films plot does have alot of ground to cover interms of where we left the characters off in No Way Home. However tho the films plot still does feel like a step down from the plot of the previous not that it's bad in any way but rather it's due to the fact that the previous film had such a good plot that anything less then that was going to always feel like a step down in quality as there are things in the films plot that do work none of which can be revealed this early on in the review but those are the things that do let you know that there is a good plot in there just trying to get out and yet for one reason or another the makers of this film don't go as far with there ideas as they perhaps could have done whereas again in the previous film they went as far with there ideas as they could have done and because of that they did up with a much more better plot out of it where as here due to the fact alot of the ideas do feel underbaked alot of the time the films plot as good as it is in it's own right isn't allowed to be as good as it could have been with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man and Zendaya as Michelle "MJ" Jones-Watson. Also starring in this film is Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds , Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle / The Punisher , Tramell Tillman as Bill Metzger , Michael Mando as Mac Gargan / Scorpion , Zabryna Guevara as Sheila Rivera , Marvin Jones III as Lonnie Lincoln / Tombstone , Naomi Watts as the voice of E.V. , Liza Colón-Zayas as Jean DeWolff and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner / Hulk.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that he actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The fact that this film does have some good acting isn't something that all that surprising as all of the Tom Holland Spider-Man films have always had some really good acting in them with this films new director Destin Daniel Cretton continuing this trend by once again proving that he does know how talk to his actors and get a good performance out of them with this being something that does help them give the right performance for this film. With the best actor in this film being Sadie Sink as she does manage to breath new life into her character and make aa character is usually seen one way now seem alot more darker and more complex with her even more then holding her own when it comes to acting alongside MCU vets like Tom Holland , Zendaya and Jon Bernthal something which couldn't have been easy to do as by all rights they would have the best grip on there characters due to the fact that all of them have been playing them for years and yet Sadie does stand just as tall when it comes acting in scenes with them with her making what could have been seen as a dull character seem more emotionally thought out which is something that really does shine through in her performance. With the acting that's in this very film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and that is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI in this film is the legends and the greats that are currently over at Industrial Light & Magic and Soho VFX. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that he actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With appearing as if a little less CGI was used in this film then there was in the previous film as while there are some scends and characters that can only be done inside of a computer there does also appear to be alot more practical effects done this time around which does blend in nicely with the films CGI. Whilst there will always be CGI in these films as even in the original 2002 Spider-Man film there was copious amount of CGI to be found in that film it does feel like that they have found a pretty good balance between doing things for real and doing things in side of a computer with the films practical effects serving to help make the films CGI effects look just as good as now there was something there on the day of filming to help give the effects artists an idea of what things like the lighting on the set might have been like instead of either just having to guess it completely or filming the entire film inside of a studio and hoping for the best, whilst there are some pretty dodgy looking effects seen all throughout the film those don't outweigh the films good effects as while it would have been nice for this film to be fully done practically the fact is that was something that will ever be the case.
SPOIERLS START HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you recall quite literally a few days ago during one of the premieres for this film someone who worked on the film straight up leaked out a certain character will be working on this film and yes it is true Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey. However she is not the only surprise in this film as we also have Marisa Tomei as Aunt May and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova with the Jean Grey reveal perhaps being the biggest reveal in the film with the ting that is all the more shocking is the fact that she is a teenage runaway in this film and for a good portion of the film is the films main villain this is something that does seem like a good way to set this character up as while we do know that the character does meet her fate in the Dark Phoenix saga seeing her start out as villain is a unique take to go with the character. With the X-Men set to slowly introduced into the mainline MCU it does make sense to start of with Jean as she is meant to be an Omega level mutant and seeing her go on this quest in this film to find her sister Sarah does help to make the character be all the more likable as even tho she is doing these evil things they are coming from a place of love as she clearly has no control over her powers at this point in time therefor when she does meet up with the future X-Men in whatever film that ends up being that is something that could lead to her being more of a good guy, with the character in this film even starting that path as when she enters Peter's mind she finds a flashback with him and Aunt May having a chat where she tells him that she loves him either way regardless of if he has his powers or not which was something that Jean and Sarah's mum never did as she left them the second that she found out that they were mutants.
Something that was to be expected is the fact that they do address what Peter did at the end of No Way Home where he made everyone forget who is he is in order to save the world. However what wasn't expected was the fact that MJ does make Peter out to be in the wrong as she says that he made the choice for her to forget him for her and yet due to obvious reasons she doesn't remember the bigger picture in that the whole world was about minuets away from being invaded by every villain from every universe therefor Peter had to make that choice for her and it wasn't one that he made lightly as he not did love her in that film but as we see in this film still does love her and he gave that up to save her and while it is understandable why she didn't remember this. Peter doesn't call her out on it and doesn't put her in her place as he does remember all of there time together and while there fight doesn't last that long it's the fact that they make Peter out to be the one that's wrong for making that hard choice to begin with that really did stick with me as the only way that something like that could have worked being if right after she makes him to be the bad guy he then turns the table by saying that he did it to save the world as that is something that would have shut her up right away with this being something that does somewhat bring the film down a bit as it makes MJ out to be this horrid person when we know from the other films that she is anything but that with this being something that the makers of this film even know about as apart from Destin Daniel Cretton everyone who made the previous Tom Holland Spider-Man films including the writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers came back to work on this film and yet they chose to have scene where MJ acts out of character all for no reason.
The other weak thing in this film is the reveal that Jean Grey actually isn't the films main villain with it being revealed that the main villain of the film is The Department Of Damage Control. This on paper is something that could have worked if the film had made that a very real possibility by showing them acting shady and being two faced towards Spidey but they don't rather they show us Jean trying to steal something from them and doing damage to there building with them rightfully being angry and asking questions about why she's doing these things and while this is great for making Jean out to be the bad guy it does nothing for making Damage Control out to be the bad guy when they are meant to be the real villains of the film. With them not really having a plan at all outside of wanting to capture Jean which again given the things that she does to them in this film is understandable heck if the makers of this film wanted to give us a surprise villain then great but they at the very least should have given them a reason for remaining hidden in the first place and given them an actual end goal in mind Jean even tho she was never really going to stay a villain for very long at the very least had an end goal in mind in that she wanted what she believed to be a device that would help her locate her sister with her going to extreme lengths to get it that is a decent end goal for a kid villain like her to have but someone like Damage Control who are meant to be the villains main villains you do expect them to have a big end goal otherwise it just looks as if there being evil just for the sake of them being evil and all that ends up doing is making them look weak and forgettable as villains heck most people by the end of next week or maybe even two weeks would have forgotten that they are the films main villains as they have so little impact on the plot of the film.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly two hours and fourteen minuets and forty five seconds. This is pretty much the bogstandard running time for these films to be fair to this film it does have a plot that does require that long of a running time as there is so much going on plot wise in this film that to cut any of it out would end up doing a huge disservice to the films and it's plot with this films plot being that could only work with this long as running time as while there is nothing in this film plot wise that does require the film be this long but at the same time alot of the films more emotional scenes including one with oddly enough Ned a the end of the film just wouldn't work as well if this film was even just a few minuets shorter with this film even having the right amount of plot there to cover that amount of running time in the first place. Yet even with this lo running time in place the film still doesn't take the time to fully flesh out its main plot as the film does have so many subplots going including one with Peter's powers mutating that the films main plot is left fighting for screen time as the makers of the film just aren't that bothered in giving it time to be developed and if there not interested in it then why should we as audience members get invested it in with it being clear as day that the makers of this film are alot more bothered about giving the film a twist villain then they are about giving us a well thought out and developed plot. This s something that does somewhat effect the films character as while Peter Parker does get some character development in this film as he does have to learn that he can't be Spider-Man 24 / 7 and to take a break every once in a while quite literally none of the films other characters get character development which makes sense for characters like MJ , Ned and Frank as they have the other MCU projects t get there character development but Jean Grey doesn't get alot of character development and she really is the one character that perhaps needed it the must with the makers of the film caring more about making sure that Ned and Peter meet up and become friends again with Ned gaining his memories back then they did about giving the characters character development but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty OK at best. It really did feel like instead of moving forward with that they could do with this character from a action point of view that they were instead taking a step back as we don't get to see Spidey do alot of cool stuff in the film with him instead just doing the same old type of stuff that he did in the previous and heck while his dynamic with Frank was alot of fun we don't get to see them in an action scene together which makes it pointless to have him as character in the film as alot of us would want to see that a Frank Castle and Spider-Man team action scene might look like. With the best action scene in the whole entire film being in the third act when Spidey has to take several member of The Hand all of whom are being mind controlled by Jean as that is where this film gets tor truly feel like a Spider-Man film as we have to doing all of these cool moves and we have him making quips all of which are things that this character would do in any fight scene and yet for alot of the film it did feel like that the makers of this film were holding the character back with him only being let go for this one fight scene in the third act and low and behold it turns out to be a really fun fight scene that does make you realise why we loved this version of Peter Parker so much with the the rest of the films action being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
SPOILERS END HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overall whilst this is a still a good film that does prove that the MCU is bouncing back in positive ways its also not as good as No Way Home with this film feeling like a huge step down interms of quality whereas that film was apart as perfect of a Spider-Man live action film as there ever could be in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7 out of 10 from me.
Now then ad for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
