In This Corner Of The World Film Review

When people think of the great anime films that came out in 2016 nine times out of ten they do think of Your Name and rightfully so as that film is really good. However there are two more films that came out in that same year that got overshadowed by the huge success of Your Name with the first one being A Silent Voice and the other one being the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today and so then join me as I review the film that doesn't shy away from how hard live was for people in Japan during World War 2 with the film in question being called simply just "In This Corner Of The World" enjoy.

The plot of this film is young girl called Suzu leaves her family to go and live with her husbands family when the threat of war becomes bigger and bigger Suzu must step up and keep her new family safe. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The films plot does make it clear that life on all sides of the war was really hard with the plot of the film showing the characters struggle just to do the most mundane of tasks be it washing there clothes are going to the market to get things all due to the fact that the world is at war. This films plot is really harsh and doesn't shy away from the realities of war with the makers of this film taking the time to both tell and show us that characters that we love can die and alot of them do and yet the plot doesn't feel to serious either as it does take the time to highlight the more lighthearted moments that you do get with family this is something that does make what could have been seen as being a really serious and depressing plot line which is something that it very easily could have been now seem more uplifting and more real and while yes this films plot could have been alot more stronger as the films plot can at times be quite thin when this films plot works it really does work with this being the kind of plot that could only work in a feature film as the films plot is something that couldn't work in say for example a TV show format as the show would have make the thin plot even thinner whereas in a feature film the plot doesn't need to be that long in the first place with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.  

Starring in this film is Laura Post as Suzu Hojo . Todd Haberkorn as Shusaku Hojo and Power Rangers star Barbara Goodson as San Hojo. Also starring in this film is Kirk Thornton as Entaro Hojo , Kira Buckland as Keiko Kuromura , Kenna Pickard as Harumi Kuromura , Michael Sorich as Juro Urano , Melodee Spevack as Kiseno Urano , Tony Azzolino as Yoichi Urano , Christine Marie Cabanos as Sumi Urano , Julie Ann Taylor as Ito Morita , Jason Palmer as Tetsu Mizuhara and Karen Strassman as Rin Shiraki.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. This films acting was quite frankly alot more better then what it really should have been as by all rights this film acting shouldn't have been that good as while there are some well known anime actors in this film alot of the films actors are mostly very little known actors and yet even with that working against them they still manage to turn in some really good performances in this film with the more little known actors more then holding there own when it comes to being in scenes with the films more established actors. With the best actor in this film oddly enough not being any of the films more really well known actors but is instead Laura Post as Suzu Hojo as she is just so perfectly cast as this character who not only has to win these strangers over but also when the time comes she has to be ready to keep them safe and she has to be vulnerable at the same time this really is something that really would have been to much for alot of actors to pull off and yet she does it really beautifully with her performance coming across as being really sincere and honesty when it would have been super easy for her to just force these emotions out of her with Laura turning in a performance that is a befitting a character like Suzu in the first place with this being something that does come through in her performance. With the acting that's in this very film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

Doing the animation for this film really is the legends and the really greats that are currently over at MAPPA. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The fact that we have some really good animation in this film was something that did catch me of guard as while anime films to typically have better quality animation then anime TV shows this films animation was still mind blowing to see. As while yes it's not on part with the animation seen in Your Name for example this film does have it's own unique look to it with the film looking like one of the drawings that Suzu herself does in the film. This is something that makes one of the more dramatic moments in the film very visually stunning to look at as the explosions are imagined to look like splotches of paint in different colors which is a unique and fun idea and heck even the fact that the film has more of his picture book quality to it helps to make it feel more like a drawing that an actual film and it is something that does work for this film as it would have been super easy for the makers of this film to just stick with what works design wise and call it a day but the very fact that they went those extra miles does say that they did care about this film a unique art style and animation to it, heck the films characters even have more of a stop motion feel when it comes to there movements as it does appear as if they are animating every other frame when it comes to moving them alot of the time and yet when it comes to the more dramatic moments the characters movements become more fluid as they would be in real life with the film even having some really detailed backgrounds.

As was mentioned this film came out around the same time as Your Name and while Your Name really took off both this film and A Silent Voice despite them being just as good as Your Name became forgotten about. This is a crying shame as this film is alot more better then Your Name is due to the fact that this film is dealing with real situations whilst having original characters and while there is nothing wrong with being a fantasy anime it's that added layer of realism that helps to make this film be better as the second you find out where Suzu is from and what year this film is set you know right away that the rest of of her family is living on borrowed time and sure enough when that moment in the film does happen it is a really big moment in the film. Whereas despite Your Name also kind of being a drama it's big dramatic set piece while it does still work can't compare to a real life tragedy and heck this film does even have some likable characters and funny moments in it and yet for one reason or another the main stream audiences chose Your Name to be the film that gets better remembered and while that is fair enough as that film is also really good that doesn't mean that we have to forget films that got the same good reviews from both critics and fans as Your Name and this is something that does in it's own way make me angry as there was no reason why Your Name got chosen to be as popular as it did as yes it is a good film but it's also one that you forget whereas a film like this one is one that does stay with you due to the fact that the makers of this film did go that extra mile when they were making the film to base the incidents in the film on things that happend for real to real people around the same time that this film is set which is yes a very small thing and alot of anime do base there locations on real life locations as well but due to the historical nature of this film it is something that does help to make this film be as good as it is in the first place.

This film is of course based on the manga of the same name by writer Fumiyo Kōno with the manga being published between 2007 and 2009. Just based on a very quicky read off the manga's Wikipedia page it does seem like that this film was a very accurate adaptation with it pretty much following the events of the manga beat for beat and heck it adapts all of the manga which is something that would have been hard to do given the fact that the manga has bee running for two years straight and yet this films covers all of its story in just one film and while granted this film does technically have a longer version out there that us more closer to three hours in length the fact that does remain that it is shocking that this film did manage to cover the manga's entire plot and not really miss a single major plot point. It is however hard to say on if this film will get people to buy the manga or not as manga adaptations are mainly done to do exactly that and yet with this films manga having already been completed in the first place it would be nice to see if this film did get more people to read the manga as they would be getting more of the story that they already love and the characters that they fell in love with but this might be a case where it wouldn't be needed, heck the manga is apparently so popular that is still getting various adaptations to this very day ranging from TV adaptations to more recently a live stage show musical of all things and yet its Your Name that America has sent the better part of ten years trying to adapt for the big screen and yet they won't go near this film most likely because of the fact that it makes them look really bad and rightfully so as they were the ones that dropped atomic bombs on an innocent city that killed hundreds of thousands of people and pretty much wiped the city off of the face of the earth something is a key plot point in both the manga and this film.

Whilst this film does show us alot of the hardships that everyone goes through during a war it also doesn't shy away from having these more lighthearted moments with the characters. With these moments serving as ways for us to like the characters be it Suzu painting the harbor or Keiko doing anything she can to make Suzu look bad whilst failing to do so bottom line being there are plenty of light hearted moments in this film and all of them work with them working due to the fact that the film has given us this time to really get to know the character and the struggles that they are going through in this film with them finding comfort in the small victories that they earn with those small victories be it getting some rice from the market or having enough rations to get something sweet those are things that are bringing them joy. With the characters expressing that joy through making each other laugh and being silly at times with the film not even undercutting any of the tension in any of it's more dramatic scenes as they don't have the characters make a joke during any of the more dramatic scenes with this being something that does add to the more realistic nature of the film as in real life you wouldn't make a joke while deadly bombs are falling all around you you'd treat it as a serious situation and that's exactly what the characters in this film do as to them that's there reality and while they do struggle to keep hope alive by having those small victories and having those more lighthearted moments even they know that this is a serious situation and it needs to be treated as such. With that being exactly what they do and while it could be argued that alot of the films more lighthearted moments aren't that funny in the first place which is a fair point to make they do feel like jokes that you would tell with your family if you were in a similar situation to the characters in this film.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly two hours and nine minuets and twenty two seconds. Which even taking into account that this is the shorter version of the film that is still quite along time for what is essentially a slice of life film to have as for alot of the films running time there really isn't anything happening but at the same time tho it is hard to picture this film having a shorter running time as that would mean that alot of the more important character stuff would have to get cut out of the film as none of that stuff is important to the films running time and yet if this films was longer it would feel like that the film is stretching its thin premise even more so then what it is doing with its current running time with this film having the right amount of plot there to cover that amount of running time in the first place. Yet even so the film really doesn't use its running time all that wisely as the film doesn't take the time to fully develop it's plot with this mainly due to the fact that the film is a slice of life drama and those don't typically have plots were you can add things to the plot as that makes the plot be more fully developed as all we are are doing is seeing these characters go about there day to day lives and that's it but it still would have been if we did get some kind plot development in the film with it being more clear that the makers of this film put more effort into giving us more lighthearted moments with the characters then they did into giving us plot development. This is something that again could be argued does effect the films character development as well as once again this is a type of anime that doesn't really allow for there to be character development but given the fact that all of the characters are fictional it would have been nice if a character like Suzu or even Keiko got some kind of character development just to show them growing as characters with it being mote clear that the makers of this film cared more about showing Suzu drawing things then they did about giving us character development but I really will admit tat this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.

So now then as this is a drama that really does mean that I have to actually talked about the actual drama that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty i in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual drama that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The films drama does mainly come from the real life things that were added to this film which is something that does make them all the more real and heartbreaking with it being helped by the fact that the makers of this film do take the time to make sure that we like all of the characters before we hit a big dramatic moment as tat is something that makes the drama all the more effective. With the best piece if drama in the whole entire film oddly enough not being the attack on Hiroshima but rather its the scene where Suzu and Harumi are walking near a beach having just spent the night in an an raid shelter as the both of them accidentally trigger an unexploded bomb that while it severely injuries Suzu kills the young child Harumi with her mother Keiko being rightfully grief stricken by this with the thing that makes it work being the fact that it is not only the main character being put in mortal danger but also the fact that its a young id that we the audience had been given the chance to like as a character being the one to get killed with this being something that right away lets you know that anyone of this family can now die with this being something that no Hollywood film would dare to show but it a sad reality of war with the rest of the films drama being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.  

Overall if you haven't done yet please do go and check out this film as while there are other better anime films out there this is a film that will stick with you because of how real everything in the film feels with the film itself also being a very pretty film to look at as well in my freaking opinion anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly an 8.5 out of 10 from me.
