Fish Tank Film Review

When people typically think of British made films they usually think of either the Hammer Horror films or any British comedy film. Very rarely however do they think of a hard hitting British drama and well then that's the type of the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today with the film in question actually having quite a high score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and so then join me as I review that features a young Michael Fassbender with the film in question being called simply just "Fish Tank" enjoy.

The plot of this film is fifteen year old Mia finds her life turned upside down when her mothers latest boyfriend enters her life. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. To be frank the plot of this film whilst it is a simple plot for sure might be one of the more stronger elements in a film that chock full to the brim with strong elements as this is a plot that doesn't need to be epic in der for it to work as all it is just showing us a brief glimpse into the live of this person. Which is great as that's all it needed to do it didn't need to be big and fancy it just needed to be small and tell this small scale story well and that's exactly what it does with this helping the fact that the film can now present a more true to life version of England and not one that gets glamorized in American films and while yes this film would been helped out alot more if it's plot was alot more stronger to do that tho would go against the whole idea of the film in the first place withe films plot working because of the fact that it is this weak plot as that helps to make the film feel more true to life whereas it would have ben very easy for the makers of this film to tell a more bigger scale story set within it's council estate setting and yet they don't they just keep the focus of the plot on where it should be this one family and all of the madness that happens within, this is something that does make the films be all the more interesting as it allows for the characters to have moments that we all have with our families which again helps with making the film feel all the more real with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is Katie Jarvis as Mia Williams , Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare and Avengement star Kierston Wareing as Joanne Williams and X-Men First Class , Days Of Future Past , Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix star Michael Fassbender as Connor O'Reily. Also starring in this film is Rebecca Griffiths as Tyler Williams , The Lone Ranger and Star Trek: Picard star Harry Treadaway as Billy , Sydney Mary Nash as Keira O'Reily and Sarah Bayes as Keely.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With all of this films actors really giving us there best work in this film so much so that it is a shame that not alot of them went to do more films as Rebecca Griffiths really hasn't done a thing since this film and she was really good in the film with all of the films actors also being perfectly well cast as there character respective character so much so that it is hard to picture anyone else playing these characters as these actors are just so good in this film. With the best actor in this film quite easily being Katie Jarvis as Mia Williams as she is just so perfectly cast as Mia and easily gives the best performance in the whole entire film with it being no wonder that she got praise just on the films poster alone and what's more shocking was that this was her debug role ever and while she hasn't gone on to do any major films since this one she gone on to do alot of work in TV shows here in the UK with her having more the  enough acting skill to really have a go and make it as a big time actor as she is just so good in this film as she does have the skill there to make someone who is quite the horrid character at times seem likeable and almost pathetic with just a look and heck one could say that her performance in the film feels very much like how teenagers back in 2009 England spoke as her performance does feel real. With the acting that's in this film also being helped by the fact that the films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

Like alot of things about this film the films character do feel very real and like they could be people that we all know. With this being due to the fact that all of the members of Mia's family oddly feel real with her mother being someone who can't live with being single and her little sister being an annoying little sister where things do get more complicated is with the character of Connor as he is the sweet talking charmer who charms his way into the whole family winning them all over which is great but then the film does give him more of an edge where he can be more creepy with him spending alot of time playfully flirty with fifteen year old Mia and openly cheating on his wife and daughter with this being someone who was meant to be this really likable person now seem unlikable even when being compared to the more unlikable Mia. As she is meant to be the typical teenager who has grown up on this badly run council estate and will do anything to move away from it with her knowing pretty much nothing but misery with her even loosing a friend due to her own anger at the start of the film and therefor when she sees Connor be nice to her and actually give her respect she doesn't really know how to handle that and therefor she does lash out at him which is something that does make her seem like an unlikeable character but then she'll do something like try to rescue a horse that she believes is being left tied up for no good reason or she'll realise that she's made a huge mistake after she accidentally knocks Connor's daughter into the river and get her out of it these are things that don't negate the fact that she has and does do bad things in the film but they are things that make her more complicated as a character and the film is filled to the brim with characters like that as they all do bad things in certain scenes but then will turn around and do something genuinely nice in the next scene.

Whilst it could be argued that the key theme of this film is happiness and what people will do to keep it it could also be argued that the key theme of this film is love. As we see both Mia and her mother fall in love with Connor in a romantic way whereas her little sister falls in love with him in a family kind of way and even Mia herself it could be argued does find a lover interest of her own in the character of Billy as the two of them do spend alot of time together with Billy even being the one to drive away with Mia at the end of the film which was quite interesting as was seeing the effect that Connor has on the two older women as he uses his natural charm and charisma to won them both other and get them both to fall in love with him. Yet the ting that makes this theme truly stand out is the fact that we also get to see the negative effects of someone being in love as we see Mia's mother get her heartbroken by Connor when he does decide to go back to his other family and we do see Mia almost get possessive of him when she finds out that he has another family both of these are things that can happen and yet for one reason or another we don't see that side to falling with someone all that much as nine times out of ten we just seem them end up together happily and that's that and that's fine for a less realistic film but it's not how things are in the real world with this being something that the film does go out of it's way to show as we do see what happens when both Mia and her mother are happy in love be it with Connor or maybe even with Billy as they do become more happy people always dancing and having a laugh with each other and others around them and yet when they ate not in love they become there true selves again.

Look while many people think of classic British horror films or British comedies are even the James Bond films. When they think of UK films they have to take this film into account as well as this is a film that does prove that we English no know how to make good films as this is a film that does give you all of the things that you do expect to find in a good film and while it's not as popular a the James Bond films it is still a film that is shockingly good in it's own right with there being others like this from the UK and yet because of the fact that they are not a major film franchise no one outside of the UK and very few people within the UK will even know that this film is a thing in the first place and that I crying shame as this is a really good film. Heck all you have to do is look at the reviews that it has to see that alot of people do like this film the bottom line being just because of the fact that it's not a James Bond film doesn't mean that England can't make good films as we are making them all the time and this is a film that is a good example of that but because of the fact that it's not a big franchise film no one is going to to look a5t this film and that's fair enough as this is film isn't for everyone but then they can't say that there aren't good original films out there or being made right now because they are you just have to look hard enough to find them and heck in this regard I do get why people don't know of this film as if a college teacher of mine didn't take me and the whole class to a small cinema in Manchester I wouldn't have heard of this film either and this would be a review of something else entirely but because they did do that I ended up falling in love with a film that I didn't know about and you can to if you just go and see a small local film that was made cheaply by makers that cared more about the art of film making and less about being a big budgeted spectacle film.

This film is quite frankly hard to fully judge as while the film does seem like there is nothing on it will then have a scene that ties them all together. Like for example the scene where Connor takes Mia and her family out for a drive somewhere and Mia hurts her foot this on paper is a nothing scene and one that could very easily be cut from the film but then they bring it back by having Mia go to Connor's place of work and have him check on the foot and give her a video camera so she record her dancing which again comes back into play later on in the film this just a masterful way to build your film as now it makes it look like that that every scene is important and if you cut one scene from the film then you risk the whole film falling inwards. Look to be fan yes there are some aspects of the film that don't quite work like the fact that we do see Connor and Mia getting it on in the film which even taking into account the films council estate setting the fact that Mia is a bit of screwup is still a really creepy thing to see in the film and would have been just as effective if she professed her love to him but he turned her down with her not being able to cope with that which still would have been true to her character and the films more grounded nature with the same thing also being true for the scene where Mia and Billy drunk as that is a pointless scene and yet it also does feel real as there will be times in life where we do something that we know isn't good for us but it is just fun and for characters like Mia and Billy getting drunk together is fun and to be fair it is one of the few times in the film where the film does allow itself to be fun as the rest of the time it is quite the miserable film and while that is something that could put people off it is also something that is not only done really well in the film itself but is also true to life as well.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly two hours and two minuets and thirty seven seconds. Which to be fair to this film is a pretty solid running time for this film and while the film really doesn't need to be that long in order to tell it's really simple and thin story the film would oddly feel incomplete if it was even ten minuets shorter as alot of the scene in the film that we think are going to be nothing scenes that you could cur from the film they do end up being major parts of the film itself self and yet if the film was even a few minuets longer it would feel like it's stretching it's thin premise a bit to thing with the film having more then enough plot there to cover that amount of running in the first place. With the film even using it's running time wisely a the film does infact take the time to fully develop it's plot granted it's not in big ways but given just how small scale that this films plot is in the first place it doesn't need need to be as we do see how things like Mia and Connor's and her mother and Connor's relationship grows all through the film only for them to come tumbling down which is a great to add things to the film plot in the first plat. Heck the film even fully develops its characters and while yes granted not all of the films characters get character development as it is mainly just Mia and to a lesser extent Connor that gets character development it is still something that the makers of this film really didn't have to do in the first place and yet because of the fact that the makers of this film do care more about the art of film making then anything else it does mean that that get character development with Mia learning that her actions do have consequences something which do see her learn over and over again in the film and Connor learning that leading a double life really can result in double trouble but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good acing to it tho.

So now then as this is a drama that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual drama that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual drama that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With the films drama being the film does shine it's best as all of the films drama does feel very character driven and on top of that we do see the fall of of the drama from one scene to the next which is something hat does add to the fact that for these characters what they are going threw is real and how they feel about certain things is real even if it's something small like falling out with a friend we still see that come back during the film itself. With the best piece of drama in the whole entire film being when Mia finds out that Connor has a wife and kid as she breaks into his house messes up does some tother things to it and then leaves but tt doesn't end there as a while later she comes back and kidnaps Connor's daughter ad by accident almost drowns with it only being then that she realises that her actions will come back to haunt her with her then rescuing the kid letting her go back home, this is such a good piece of drama as its a pay off for everything that Mia has gone though all throughout the film plus her emotions with learning that the person she openly admitted to loving was a cheat all coming up in a negative way with Mia learning to control her anger and not get worked u all of the time which is something that des make this one sequence worth watching as it is so good and it is quite a thrilling and drama tic sequence to watch in it's own right with the rest of the films drama being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall if you haven't seen this film go and track it down somewhere on DVD or Blu-ray and if you have seen this film film then go and watch it again as this is a film that is more then worth watching just for the acting alone as the film itself is just that good in the first place in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well a all of the bad rings that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 9 out of 10 from me.
