Enola Holmes 3 Film SPOILER FILLED Film Review
It's safe to say that out of all of the modern adaptations of the Sherlock Holmes story it's oddly enough the one that was meant to pre-teen girls that has captured people's attention. With the Enola Holmes films being fairly good ratings winners for Netflix so much so that no one was surprised when they announced a third film and well then that film has just been released and as i've reviewed all of the previous films it only made sense that I review this film as well and so then join me as I give you my SPOILER FILLED review of the film that might be the weakest of the three films with the film in question being called simply just "Enola Holmes 3" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when her brother Sherlock is kidnapped it's up to Enola to find him and stop however kidnapped him before it's to late. Now then interms of that I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. To be frank this films plot isn't the best plot that the films have had as it does commit a sin that no mystery film should make and that's the fact that this film is predictable this is something that no mystery film should ever be as you always want to keep you audience guessing and yet here it felt like that the makers of this film just straight up forgot about that even tho the second film did it perfectly. The films plot is one that while you can work out where it's going you can still tell that there is a lot of effort put into making the films plot be as good as it is with the thing that makes it feel predictable being the fact that you do get the impression that this films writer and one of it's producers Jack Thorne is just running out of ideas and that is fair enough as he did write the other two films as well therefore maybe he should have stepped aside for this film just to allow himself more time to come up with ideas for further adventures as the plot does have alot of the right ingredients needed to make a good plot rathe the only thing that it needed to make them all come together was a decent enough plot and that's really it and while yes there are some aspects of the films plot that do work there are others that shouldn't get the much focus and yet the makers of the film put more of a focus on them then they do the plot itself with the plot of this films not really being really rather entertaining and as well as not really being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is one of this films producers and Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown as Enola Holmes and Louis Partridge as Tewkesbury. Also starring in this film is Jason Watkins as Brigadier Sampson , Hattie Morahan as Lady Tewkesbury , Joe Azzopardi as Mikiel Mizzi , Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes , Himesh Patel as Dr. Watson , Susan Wokoma as Edith and Helena Bonham Carter as Eudoria Holmes.
Now then interms of that I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. This is something that is not totally surprising as the acting in the previous film was also quite good and while some of thia films actors aren't big enough names to sell an entire movie they do still turn in a good performance in this film like for example with Millie Bobby Brown she is good enough for Netflix films and she is really good in this film with this being something that does make sense as she is a producer on this film and therefor can have the character be tailored to her strengths as an actor. With the best actor in this film being Helena Bonham Carter as it is clear as day that she is having a blast playing this character and heck she even gets some of the best lines in the film with giving us a performance that is both cheeky and also fun to watch and this is something that is perfect for her character as you should never really know just what her character is thinking and therefor you should never really know just what kind of performance that Helena is going to bring as that is something that would add to the spontaneity of the character with it being something that does shine though in her performance. With the acting that's in this very film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely anything to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that does hard the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is the legends and the great that are currently over at beloFX , Untold Studios , Vine FX , Company 3 and Curated. Now then interms of that I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. This films CGI whilst it is indeed really good as it doesn't stand out at all it was also something that wasn't needed for this type of film as the only CGI that they really use in this film is just set extensions for a big set piece around the middle of the film and while it might have been needed to extent the films set for the set piece it wasn't needed as the makers of this film could have shot it practically using models and miniatures. This isn't to say that it's bad looking CGI as it really isn't it's just that it would have looked better if it was done for real as CGI effects do date really quickly and with this film being a straight to streaming film the effects budget wouldn't have been that high in the first place therefor going the practical route for that scene would have made the most sense and it would have resulted in the film having alot more really good effects as you really can't tell just what was done for real and what was done inside of a computer and this is is something that should always the case for effects as the whole point of CGI is give us effects that we don't know are effects with them being able to blend into the background as this makes it alot more easier for us the audience to buy in the film and while this is the case for this film it doesn't mean that this film had to use as much CGI as it does end up using as all that does in the case of this film is make it look like that we are watching an animated film when if we wanted to do that we could have just put on an animated film in the first place.
SPOILERS START HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whilst these films have always had more of a focus on the growing romance between Enola and Tewkesbury it was never the main focus of the films rather it was something that was happening on in the background. Whereas here it takes centre stage and while there is nothing wrong with that it more often that not does come at the expense of the films mystery as the film has to stop moving its mystery forward to spend a few long and painfully drawn out scenes with the two of them discussing their feelings for each other which is not something that you come into a mystery film to see as you the main focus of a mystery film to be just that the mystery and yet the makers of this film seem to think that we care more about on if the two of them will end together or not when the truth is we don't care about any of that stuff. As none of that should have been the main focus of the film granted it is a good way to get the film started and to keep on coming back to but when it starts to effect the time spent on its mystery that's when it becomes an issue as it does get to the point where you do end up forgetting that there is a mystery going on here something which both Enola and Tewkesbury have a personal stake in as Enola is looking for Sherlock and Tewkesbury is looking for his mother, this is something that could have worked if the film took the same approach to it that the previous two films took where it's happening in the background but it doesn't effect what's going on in the foreground that way the makers of this film could have had the romantic drama that they are trying to turn this franchise in to and they still tell a good mystery it doesn't have to be one of the other you can do both just by moving the mystery into the foreground and not have it be in the background as this is meant to be a mystery film and not a romance film.
Like with the second film they really do Sherlock dirty here as not only is he mainly missing clues which is something that he would never d it's now made even more worse due to the fact that the character is barely in the film. Granted this might be because of scheduling therefor they might not have had Henry Cavill for that long which is fair enough if true but given the fact that he does appear in alot of the film you do have to wonder why Sherlock isn't in this film all that much as all it does is make it feel like that they are shoving his more well known character aside for a character that alot of people don't know about and while in the previous film you could argue that he was mainly playing the Mycroft might have played that doesn't seem to be the case here with this film. Due to when he is shown on screen after being kidnapped he is still acting like how you think that he would do with him more then getting underneath the main villains skin in his own way which is something that Sherlock would do however tho this film seems to think that we don't want to see Sherlock and instead want to see more of Enola when in truth what we want to see is the very thing that was promised at the end of the second film that being the two of them working together as they both have different ways of solving a case with Enola taking a punch first ask question later approach and Sherlock being the kind of person to think through every single step first before taking one with that being something that would have been for great viewing if the film showed us them working together to solve a case for the whole film and while we do get to see them solving a case near the start of the film all it does is serve to make Sherlock look the fool as he misses an obvious clue something which Enola notices right away which just makes him look like a bad detective with it not even serving a part in the main plot of the film in the first place.
Unlike the films Wikipedia page which does have this person listed this person was not listed in this review as its a huge spoiler as we have Sharon Duncan-Brewster back as Mira Troy / Moriarty. With the film not even hiding the fact that the main villain is Moriarty as they just outright say who it is around the mid point of the film which makes the remaining half of the film utterly pointless even more so when you take into account that give a pretty big clue as to where some valuable treasure is hiding nearer the start of the film with it feeling like that the makers of this film forgot how to actually tell a mystery as the whole point of a mystery is for us the audience to work out who did it and why and not have them outright tell us who it was WITHOUT giving us any clues in the first place. Which is something that does make the big reveal even more pointless that what it already is as we go into a mystery film wanting to be surprised and yet if you went onto this films Wikipedia page even thirty minuets before the film got released they outright had Moriarty listed as being in the film with the film doing nothing to hide that fact by making the character a red herring or by having her not know who the culprit is just something would have been nice and yet the makers of this film don't do that with Moriarty herself not even being as smart as she was in the second film as here she is acting reckless and almost as if she wants to be found out where the character in the second film wa hiding in plain sight with her always watching the characters every move even if they didn't know it and that is alot more creepier then having her attempt to burn down a hotel and kidnap people, with her reason for kidnapping Lady Tewkesbury being that she wants Enola to find some gold that belongs to the people Afghanistan with her being tasked to find out by Brigadier Sampson and she wanted to kidnap Sherlock to make sure that Enola and Sherlocked paid for stopping her crimes in the previous film, with her plans in this film feeling a bit weak when compared to her plan in the previous film where she was essentially acting as an evil version of Robin Hood.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and forty eight minuets and four seconds. Which for these film is quite a short running time to have as even the previous film was well over two hours and the case could be made that that film had less of a plot that this one has therefor it does make no sense for this film be one if not the shortest film in this franchise as this film does have alot of plot to cover and it can't do all of that and still focus on Tewkesbury and Enola's relationship and the stuff with Sherlock and it's mystery as eventually something will end up falling threw the quacks which in this case is the story and mystery as they are both fighting for screen time with everything else in the film this is despite the fact that the film does have more then enough plot there to cover that amount of running time in the first place. With the film not even using its running time all that wisely as the makers of this film don't take the time to fully develop its plot with again being due to the fact that the film does have alot of things to cover and such a short amount of running time in order to do it in where as if the film was around thirty minuets longer then it not only would be able to fully develop its plot but it would also be able to give the romance the time that it needs and actually give us clues as to the main villain of the film is meant to be in the first place but as the makers of this film quite clearly cared more about the romance then anything else in the film it does mean that the film plot is left feeling undercooked and underbaked. This is something that does also effect the films character development as none of the films characters get any kind of character development and whilst it could be argued that some of the retuning characters got there development in the previous film given the fact that this is the first time that we are seeing Moriarty for the whole film she gets zero character development as do all of the films new characters with the character of Mikiel essentially being reduced a joke where he announces his name and what group he's in to everyone he meets and that's it with it being made clear as day that the makers of this film cared more about spoiling who the main villain was around half way into the film then they did anything else in the film but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. The main focus of these films has never been in giving us good action set pieces and while it is nice to get them the focus was always on the mystery but here it did feel like that the action was alot more tamer then even the second film as we don't get to see Enola having to use her wits to defeat a foe and nor do we see how she manages to get of a situation like in the police chase scene in the second film rather what we end up with is bland but serviceable action. With the best action scene in the whole film being the fight between Moriarty and Enola near the middle of the film as that is a scene that we have been waiting to see since the second film as we know how well that Enola can fight and therefor seeing her go up against someone who is both her and her brothers equal in almost every respect is always going to be great to see and while the makers of this film did mess it up by having it be near the middle of the film and not near the end of the film with them then repeating it near the end of the film when just having it the once at the end of the film would have worked just as well seeing them fight in Malta's sewage system was quite interesting to watch as was the fact that Enola nearly gets chocked out with her only just being able to get out of the move and only just winning the fight itself with the rest of the films action being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
SPOILERS END HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overall if you have the choice between watching this film and watching the first three episodes of X-Men '97 season choose X-Men '97 season two as you're more then likely to have a better time with those three episodes then you are with this film as this film is nothing more then just an OK film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards .
