Carry On Jack Film Review
The Carry On films have been a British institution for quite literally decades with some of the big names in UK comedy appearing in them. This is something that is also true for the film that i'm going to be talking to you all bout today as well as while it doesn't have alot of the Carry On regulars it does have people in it that people will know from other projects as well as few of the regular Carry On players and so then join me as I review the fil that was the second ever Carry On film to filmed in color with the film in question being called simply just "Carry On Jack" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when a newly made Midshipman is knocked out he finds himself on board a ship with a fearful captain and the person that knocked him in the first place and a drunk and together they sail the seas trying to avoid taking part in a war. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. The fact that the films plot is about as OK as it is is something that is to expected from the Carry On films as one of the things that are known for its not having the best of plots with the films plots usually being there to anchor the jokes and the insanity within. This is something that this films plot does wonderfully as whilst yes the films plot is really thin at best the fact that it is as thin as it is does allow for the film to get away with more jokes as now they are not stopping the film to keep the plot moving forward rather they are choosing to focus n what alot of people still come to these films to see that being the comedy but at the same time tho there have been more plot heavy films in the series like for example Carry On Screaming and carry On Cabby all of which did have more tighter plots that still allowed room for there to be lots of jokes therefore it does feel odd that this film would instead go the opposite way and have a lot less focus on the plot almost to the point where it is hard to tell just what the main plot of the film is meant to be in the first place as the idea alone is more then enough to have a really good plot to it it just needed there to be more of a focus on the plot as a whole with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Kenneth Williams as Captain Fearless and Bernard Cribbins as Midshipman Albert Poop-Decker. Also starring in this film is Juliet Mills as Sally , Charles Hawtrey as Walter Sweetley , Percy Herbert as Mr Angel , Donald Houston as First Officer Jonathan Howett , Jim Dale as Carrier , Cecil Parker as The First Sea Lord , Patrick Cargill as The Spanish Governor , Ed Devereaux as Hook , Peter Gilmore as Patch , George Woodbridge as Ned , Ian Wilson as An Ancient Carrier , Jimmy Thompson as Nelson , Anton Rodgers as Hardy , Michael Nightingale as The Town Crier , Frank Forsyth as The Second Sea Lord , John Brooking as The Third Sea Lord , Barrie Gosney as The Coach Driver , Jan Mazurus as The Spanish Captain , Viviane Ventura as The Spanish Secretary and Marianne Stone as Peg.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. This is something that is to be expected as while the acting in alot of the Carry On films is usually nothing to write home about when they get it right they really do get it right and this is a case where they do get it right as they hire actors who not only know how to be funny but can also act and in the case of Bernard Cribbins can have chemistry with anyone on screen with all of this films actors turning in a really good performance in this film. With the best actor in the whole entire film being oddly enough Bernard Cribbins himself as he is just such a joy to watch in this film as we do get to see alot of what it was that made him so good of an actor in the first place in this film as we get to see him be funny and as we get to to see him be charming and it is something that works as both of those things are a natural extension of Bernard himself and heck it is something that does work for his character as his character is meant to be this charming person who is a little bit naive and this is something that Bernard himself does bring to the table with him even holding his own when it comes to acting with the other Carry On regulars with his natural charm being something that dos shine through in his performance in this film. With the acting that's in this very film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Like with alot of the Carry On films the characters in this film aren't really anything to write home about, As alot of them as to be expected pretty one note characters which is something that you do expect from this franchise but at the same time it is something that does stand out in this film as unlike alot of the other Carry On films at this point in time which were more joke focused then character focused this film does put alot of time into it's characters and yet none of that time was spent on making the characters all that memorable in the first place and heck even the Carry On regulars are all mostly playing character types that they are known for playing like for example Kenneth Williams is playing the always stressed out Captain Fearless and that type of character is one that he has played before with the same thing being true for Charles Hawtrey who good as well plays a drunk wimp. While they are good at playing these types of characters both Charles and Kenneth work just as well when they are playing against type as that gives them a reason to show us that it is that they can do as characters and that's when you get to see them produce comedy gold and heck it could even be argued that even tho he isn't in the film all that long Jim Dale is still playing the same type of character of the lovable handsome person who can at times be a bit dim witted altho here it is something that does work for him as he isn't n screen all that long in the first place but there still should have been more of a though into this films characters as there is nothing about them that makes them unique and that makes them standout heck even giving one of them a running joke in the film would have helped that character to stand out in some small way and yet the makers of this film clearly didn't have the time that they needed to fully flesh out these characters and make them more memorable in the first place.
As was common place in alot of films that have a male and female lead this film also has a forced and pointless romance. With the romance itself not being all that badly done truth be told as both of the actors involved in it are likable enough to pull it off the issue is tho is that the film only hints at there romance once near the middle of the film and then never mentions it again until the very end of the film with the romance itself not really playing that big of role in the rest of the film which is something that does make you wonder why the makers of this film thought it was a good idea to have it be in the film at all as you very easily could have had the romance be removed and outside of one pointless scene nothing about the film changes. Granted it is something that might have been done as a way to get the female audience to watch the film which considering the fact that this film was made in the early to mid sixties that is somethin that does make sense but at the same time just making the film good in the first place would have done that anyway with the only other reason for this romance being the fact that both Hayley Mills and Bernard Cribbins are good looking people and if that is the case then it doesn't for the film as while t could be argued that there characters would fall for each other neither of them spend any time alone with the other for that connection to work in the first place and yet if the makers of this film did want there to be a romance which they clearly did as they had it play a role in the films climax then there should have been more of an effort into making it work in the first just by doing things like showing the characters talking to each other and spending time alone together these are small things true but they are also good ways of showing these characters who might not have fallen for each other ordinarily now being head over heels in love with each other.
This film it could be argued is an important Carry On film as while it's not the first one to be filmed in color it is the first one to have a historical setting and period costumes. As all of the other Carry On film at that point in time had been set in what was then the present day therefor it would have been shocking to see the Carry On team do a historical comedy and it is something that did clearly work for them as alot of thee more well known films would be historical films with them all owing a great debt to this film as while yes this film is a flawed film no one is going to every deny that but with out this film also being as a good as it is and proving that historical films can be funny if they are done right then we wouldn't have those other films. There is perhaps one major flaw in the film that being the fact that this film take full advantage of the fact that it's sea epic parody as it doesn't comment on the tropes that all over those types of films like it does in both Carry On Spying and Carry On Screaming rather it just right up ignores them when it would have been funny to see them comment on the fact that the pirates only seem to be drinking rum or other such things as there are alot of things that the Carry On team could have used for inspiration in this film and yet they didn't they instead just have it be a random sea epic with jokes in it which whilst that is still funny it doesn't allow the film to take full advantage of the fact that it's a Carry On version f a sea epic with even alot of the things that we come to expect from a Carry On film not really being present in this film which does make the film feel like it was made to appease little kids as the other Carry On films had slightly naughty adult jokes in them that little kids wouldn't get but there mum or dad would find to be funny with this being something that does make those films feel more universal and timeless whereas here it does come across as you'll outgrow this film when you turn ten years old.
For a film that is mainly set on a ship we oddly don't get to pend that much time on the ship itself with spending just as much time either in the ship or on the land. With this being something that makes the boat itself feel like a set and not like a character and while we do get to send some time on the boat heck infact almost the entire second act is set on the boat none of of it makes the ship feel like an actual character in the film as it is all done in service to the films jokes which is something that does make alot of sense as this is a comedy afterall but at the same time given the fact that we at sea for this film it would also make sense to make the boat itself feel like a character as it is the main set on the film and is the main things that alot of the characters end up fighting over and yet it's not made to feel all that special in the first place. Altho to be fair to this film the fact that they don't spend alot of the film on the ship itself might be why the ship isn't made to feel like a character in it's own right as we do get to spend some time in Spain and while granted nothing of note really happens there other then one group of the characters getting back there ship in the first place it is something that does oddly enough make this film feel bigger as it makes it feel like a true world trotting adventure as usually the Carry On films will just stay in Britain and yet here we are visiting other countries and while all of tis film was filmed in the UK the vey fact they even made an attempt to visit another country in the first place is still something to applaud as it does show us the audience that the makers of this film did have ambition for this film with them trying there best to make the film work on the always tiny budgets that these films had and there is a fun a campy silly charm to seeing Spain done cheaply in this film when what is possibly London is this rather lavish looking set.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty seven minuets and seven seconds. Which is pretty much the bogstandard running time for all of these Carry On films as it only took them weeks to film one Carry On films with this fil not really needing that long of a running time in order to tell it's story in a way that does it justice as the only thing that you need to do for this story to work is the bare bones basic premise and that's as alot of hid film is all about setting up and paying off the films copious amount of jokes which is something that doesn't really require that long of a running time in the first place all of which does result in this film having a sold running time with the film having more then enough there interms of plot to really cover that amount of running time in the first place. However tho as was to be expected this film really does use it's running time all that wisely as the film doesn't take the time to fully develop its plot as the film is instead alot more focused on telling us jokes rather then giving us a good plot and while this is something that does make sense as this is a comedy film after all there still needed to be some level of thought in a very small amount into giving this films plot some much needed plot development with the makers of this putting more thought and effort into its plot. The same thing is also true for the films character development as the film doesn't take the time to fully develop it's character either which again is something that you do have to expect with these Carry On films as these are meant to be films that you can have on in the back ground and still understand fully is going on but there still needed to be some effort to make this films characters be all the more memorable as having them be played by a celebrity is never and will never be good enough as you do still need to give them actual character development with the makers of this film being more focused n forcing a romance down our throats then they are iv giving us well thought out and developed characters but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With nearly all of this films jokes landing and those that don't it doesn't matter as the film does fire so many jokes at you that by the time that one bad joke has registered the film is already lining up two or three really good jokes while they don't have the bite that the jokes in other Carry On films have as the jokes in the film doe feel very childlike that is oddly what makes them funny in the first place. With the best joke in the whole entire film not really being one particular joke as it's this running joke where our main hero Albert Poop-Decker outwits Jonathan Howett as we get to see him outwit him in several ways and while most of it is by accident the times that its not are the things that film to make the joke just as funny due to the fact that this is where Bernard Cribbins really does get to shine as this likable but also funny characters with him making all of this films jokes be all the more better due the fact tat they are things that you could believe that we would do just to mess with people and while this whole running joke of the heroes outwitting someone who is meant to the films films villain is a common Carry On gag it's one that works and it works for a reason as when it is done well you end up with good comedy out of it and that's exactly what we get here with the rest of the films jokes being just as funny as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall whilst there are other better and more important Carry On films out there this film is one is still good with it making for perfect for lazy Sunday afternoon viewing as it gives you all of the things that you've come to expect from a Carry On film only with out the innuendo leaden jokes in my freaking opinion anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the goo and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 6.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from Amazon . Co . Uk and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
