Beavis And Butt-Head Do America Film Review
When it comes to turning shows into movies the ratio between what is a hit movie and what is a a flop is very vastly different as there are just as many TV shows that got turned into movies that were flops then there are hits. Luckily the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today isn't one of them as while this film didn't make that much at the box office it did make enough for there to be a sequel almost thirty later and well this film is actually celebrating its thirtieth anniversary this year and so then join me as I review the film that came out the exact same year as Space Jam with the film in question being called simply just "Beavis And Butt-Head Do America" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when there TV is stolen idiots Beavis and Butt-Head find themselves going across America to ern the money causing mayhem wherever they go. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The films plot is one that does feel rightfully dumb as these characters are meant to be complete and total idiots therefor the more dumber the plot is the more it oddly works in there favor and heck this films plot is dumb but in all of the right ways. With the films plot being as over the top as you'd want it to be as while the plot of the film does involve them trying to get money to replace there TV the boys find themselves dragged into a war between a married man and and his wife both of whom are criminals with them sending the boys to kill the other all the while Beavis has this device stitched into his pants that could cause Americans to fall ill and possibly die if unleashed and its that kind of over the top plot that does make this films plot work so well as it gets to the point where you are laughing at just how dumb the plot of the film is with the film being more then willing to be this stupid plot that alot of people will be laughing which is something that does make this film alot more fun to watch as you never really know just what the plot of the film is going to be throwing at you next with the plot of this film also being really rater entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is this films writer and director Mike Judge as Beavis , Butt-Head , Tom Anderson , Mr. Van Driessen and Principal McVicker. Also starring in this film is Lisa Collins as Marcie Anderson , Greg Kinnear as Agent Bork , Robert Stack as Agent Flemming , The Substance and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame star Demi Moore as Dallas Grimes and Die Hard franchise star Bruce Willis as Muddy Grimes.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The fact that this films acting is as good as it is is something that is both shocking and yet at the same time not really shocking its not really shocking in the sense that this film does have some really good actors in it but in saying this it is also shocking in that alot more of the films actors just weren't that well known at the time that this film was being made and yet they still managed to turn in some really good performances in this film. This is something that does go without saying but the best actor in this film is Mike Judge as he not only wrote and directed this film but he also created the show that this film is based off of and is reprising his roles from the show therefore out of all of the actors that are in this film he is going to have the best knowledge of how best to perform these characters and it is something that the film does take full advantage of as there are times where the makers of this film just have scenes where its just his characters talking to each other and yet you can't really tell that there all being voiced by the same person as he is just so good in this film something which was unexpected as not only does he star in the film but he also serves as the films writer and director. With the acting in this film really being helped by the fact tat this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will com out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the animation for this film is Plus One Entertainment and the legends and the greats that are currently over at Rough Draft Korea. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The film does mix traditional handdrawn animation with 3D CGI animation really well as while it is quite obvious to tell what was done in a computer and what wasn't the fact that they even tried to do it at all in the mid nineties is still an impressive feet to manage with the films 3D animation mainly being used in the scene where Beavis and Butt-Head are dancing with it being something that does look really good given the fact that this film didn't have that high of a budget in the first place. With the films 2D animation of course getting a step up in quality when compared to that of the animation seen in the show and to be fair the makers of this film did fully know that they had to make the animation look good as while you can get away with having some bad animation on the small screen you can't really do that in a film however there are still some cheats done in this film as you can see alot of the same people in crowd scenes especially at the start of the film which is something that would have been understandable in an episode of the show as there you do have to spread the budget across an entire season of the show but for the film there really isn't an excuse for that, where this films animation does shine tho is in the character movements as all of the characters are given these really fluid movements which is something that they might not have been able to do in the show but here in the film it is something that does really good with the makers of this film putting alot of thought and attention into the films animation.
All throughout the show we are never told who the boys dads are and yet here in this film we actually get to see them for them. With it turning out that the boys dads were Motley Crew roadies ad yet in typical fashion for this show and these characters neither one of the pair realises that they are related to each other with Butt-Heads dad even going as far as to mention how they got together with there mums something which the boys take great pride in knowing as they have no clue that they are talking to there dads and there dads are talking about how they hooked up with there mums and while this is a scene that very easily have been cut from the film as it adds nothing to the films plot the fact that it was kept in does show us that the makers of this film knew full well this scene would get alot of laughs out of people and they were right. As the very idea of the boys running into there dads but due to both pairs being idiots the scene does oddly work and its shocking that they never brought these characters back either for the show or the sequel film or the rival show as they very easily could have gotten some good jokes out of these characters but in saying that tho they are essentially just one joke characters that being the fact that they are just as dumb as Beavis and Butt-Head are and there's only so many times that you could tell a joke like before it gets old and while it would have been nice to see them hanging out with the boys more often it is also understandable as to why these characters were not only never mentioned again but also never showed up again either. With the cherry on top being the fact that both of there dads do wear clothes that are very similar to what there sons wear which yes granted is a small thing but it is also something that does make what is already a really good set up be better as it just makes you wonder how either pair didn't make the connection tat they are actually talking to a member of there own family.
This film does do a really good job of making the boys seem like really likable characters as by all rights these two characters should have been really annoying. Yet the makers of this film do go the extra mile to make sure that we are laughing more at the boys then we are with them which is something that does make them seem all the more likable as even tho the film doesn't give us a reason to like these characters at all the fact that they are so dumb and that they are so silly is more then enough to get us the audience to get behind them and want to see them succeed and heck one could argue that how they are portrayed in the film is true to how other teenagers are in real life as teenagers nine times out of ten aren't the smartest bulbs in the shed. Therefor having characters like Beavis and Butt-Head make these dumb jokes and be this dumb is something that could be seen as being true to real life and to be fair this film didn't really need them to be likable as the show itself would have had plenty to time to let us get to know them as characters and decide on if we like them or not and the fact that the original show no only went one for as long as it did but is still being talked about to this very day does tell us that the makers of this film did succeed in making Beavis and Butt-Head as likable as they could have done without it being the expense of the premise of the show or in this case film. The only real thing that does let this film down is the fact that we don't get to spend alot of time with more of the characters from the show with the two title characters plus Mr. Anderson spending more time crossing America then they do in there home town of Highland and while that is something that is great for either the casual viewer or the none fan of the show given the fact that this show is based off of a highly popular show it would have made just as much sense if we got to see more characters from the show play a more larger role in the film out of the school people that only amounts to nothing more then a pair of cameos.
The main villains of this film or Muddy and Dallas Grimes and to be frank they really weren't needed all that much in the film. As while they do serve a purpose in that it's them that do get the boys to travel across America be it at first for Muddy to have someone to kill his wife and then for Dallas to get them to sneak something into Washington D.C. after that they are essentially side characters in the film and heck we don't even get to find out why they want this device so badly in the first place and nor do we find out why Muddy originally wanted Dallas dead in the first place which is something that does make them feel more like an afterthought. Infact one could argue that the film would work just as well without them in it as you very well could have the boys go after what they think is there TV across the country with them still causing trouble and mayhem wherever they end up going only for it to still be revealed that there TV was just a few feet away from n there home town the whole time as that's how little of an impact that both Muddy and Dallas Grimes have in the film heck you could even make the case that Agent Flemming plays a bigger role in the film as he and his team are the ones that are actively trying to hunt the boys down only for the boy to only just unknowingly escape him and heck its heck its even Agent Flemming that tries to have Beavis killed at the end of the film and not ether one of the Grimes's. However tho this is something that could be the point as the boys are meant to be idiots and therefor they would of course course all of this trouble and mayhem without even knowing it with this being something that would and possibly does get both of the Grimes's upset and frustrated at them in the case of Muddy but the makers of this film should have gone the extra mile to make both Dallas and Muddy seem like the true villains of the film and actually given them an end goal that they are actively trying to reach as that is something that would have made us the audience rout more for Beavis and Butt-Head.
Now then this film had / an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty minuets and fifty two seconds. Which for an animated film that's based off of a TV show is still a really solid running time to have as the film doesn't really have all that much to set up as both the world and its characters would have been set up in the show an therefor the only thing that this film would have had to have set up its plot and to be fair it didn't really need to do that as this films plot is a dumb plot in the first place and yet the fact that the makers of this film did go the extra mile to have the plot of the film make sense in there own twisted way does show us the audience that the makers of this film dd put in alot more thought and effort into this films plot then what was really necessary with the film even having the right amount of plot there to cover that amount of running time in the first place. While yes granted this film really doesn't use its running time all that wisely as the film really doesn't take to fully develop its plot it really doesn't need to as this is a plot that isn't meant be taken all that seriously in the first place and while yes it would have helped the film out a little bit if there were things added to the film that did give it more stakes that would also take away from having more jokes in the film with it being more obvious that the makers of this film really did put more thought and attention into letting us know that this is an animated adult comedy then it did in giving us a well thought out and developed plot. The same thing thing is also true for the films lack of character development as you could very well argue that both Beavis and Butt-Head get there character development in the show and therefore don't really need to get it in the film but even if they didn't that would still go against who they are as characters as these are meant to be dumb as a rock teenagers and therefore giving them character development would go against who they are as characters but at the same time tho it would have been nice if the films new characters did get some character developed but it is clear that the makers of this film did put more thought and effort into giving us pointless villains then they did in giving the new characters character development but i really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as is a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk abut the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. As much like with Hot Fuzz when this film does tell the odd bad joke it very quickly throws about two or three more at you that not only land but land hard whilst also setting up another two or three jokes at the same time with this being just how fast that the film does throw jokes at you and while the film could have done with slowing down on the amount of jokes that it tells in doing so the film just wouldn't feel right as this is a film that is meant to have alot of jokes coming out you. With the best joke in the whole film also being one of the films dumbest jokes as at the start of the film when the boys realise that there TV has been stolen Butt-head just spends a good thirty seconds just looking at the evidence on the floor all of which not only points out not only how the burglars broke into the house but also how they left with him eventually saying that he's come to the conclusion that this su*ks which is just such a dumb joke but that's also why the joke works as well as it does its only the kind of joke that you could tell with these characters and because of the fact that audiences would have gotten alot of time with these characters thanks to the show its joke that the audience knows that the makers of this film would tell with these characters with the rest of the films jokes being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall whilst this film did spawn a sequel in 2022's Beavis And Butt-Head Do The Universe this film is still better and does hold up really well almost thirty years later and heck this is a film that I would recommend to anyone that loves animation as it is just that good of a film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such tat really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly an out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
