The Mandalorian And Grogu Film SPOILER FILLED Film Review
Seven years that's roughly how long it's been since we last got a Star Wars project on the big screen yes there have been movie announcements but nothing ever came of them. Yet now we have a new Star Wars movie and it is one that we should all go and see on the big screen to prove to the heads at Disney and Lucasfilm that Star Wars deserves to be seen on the big screen and so then join me as I give you my SPOILR FILLED review of the film that is the first Star Wars film to be an adaptation of a TV show with the film in question being called simply just "The Mandalorian And Grogu" enjoy.
The plot of this film is The Mandalorian and Grogu are sent to find the kidnapped son of Jabba The Hutt and have to try and get information on a valuable target. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. This films to be frank whilst it is good does feel like an extended episode of the show only with nothing in it that demands that it be seen on the big screen with the films plot just kind of content with being another episode of the show rather ten being a story that could only be told on the big screen. However to be fair tho this films plot is still a really good plot as while it is an extended episode of the show the show itself even if it's much hated third season did have some really good plots in it with it being made clear as day that the makers of this film do have a love for Star Wars as there is an attempt in this film to bring Star Wars back to its heights and this is something that it really did need, yet this films plot is still not as good as it really could have been as while it does have some talented people working on it it does feel like that this film was written to be the fourth season of the show as the films plot does have that feeling of cutting itself of every thirty minuets or so and while the films plot is a strong plot it is one that could have been a little bit stronger then what it is just to make the films plot feel alot less like a rip off of The Clone Wars films plot and more like something that could only be told o the big screen with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Pedro Pascal as The Mandalorian , Brendan Wayne as The Mandalorian and Lateef Crowder as The Mandalorian. Also starring in this film is Sigourney Weaver as Colonel Ward , Steve Blum as the voice of Zeb Orrelios , Jeremy Allen White as the voice of Rotta , Jonny Coyne as Lord Janu , Matthew Willig as Hogsbreth , Martin Scorsese as Hugo Durant , Hemky Madera as Commander Barro , Stephen McKinley Henderson as Gatori , Shirley Henderson as The Anzellans , Cullen Douglas as Prefect Nobah , Joel Stoffer as Commander Fremmet , Sonny Saito as A Snow Walker Commander , Doug Chiang as Lieutenant Blick , Deborah Chow as Sash Ketter , Lee Isaac Chung as Dok Suri , Rick Famuyiwa as Jib Dodger , this films co-writer and producer Dave Filoni as Trapper Wolf , Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Captain Carson Teva and Star Wars legend Anthony Daniels as An Air Traffic Control Droid.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. One of the oddly few things that this films have been getting praise for is it's acting and it's not that hard to see why as this films acting is really good granted it's not going to be winning any kind of OSCARS anytime soon but it's easily better then the wooden acting that we got across the while of the sequel trilogy with alot more of the praise going to Pedro Pascal which is fair enough as he is the films main actor but at the same time he's barely in the suit as alot of the time it's either Brendan Wayne or Lateef Crowder with both of them even getting on screen credits. With the best actor in the whole entire film being both Lateef Crowder and Brendan Wayne as while yes it would have been very easy to just say that Pedro Pascal is the films best actor and while his mostly voice over performance is good that won't mean anything with the physical acting that both Lateef and Brendan bring to the role as both of them do have embody the character of The Mandalorian at various points in the film and both of them do deserve alot of love and attention for doing so as while Pedro is able to bring emotion to the character both Lateef and Brendan have to get across that same emotion using nothing but body language with it being the same thing that David Prowse also had to do in the original trilogy and it is something that do get across as well as they quite possibly could have done. With the acting that's in this very film really being helped by the fact that this films scripts is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is the legends and the greats that are currently over at Industrial Light & Magic , Legacy Effects and Tippett Studio. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. For some odd reason one of the things that people don't seem to like about this film is it's visuals no there is a good chance that they might not mean the VFX and that they might just mean how the films looks which if so that is fair enough as the films does look flat. However in regards to the films VFX they are really good with there being alot of thought and effort put into them and with whom is working on this films VFX it's no wonder that they are as good as they. Much like with the show this films does seem to have been filmed on a volume which is something that does make it easier to blend the CGI effects with the films practical effects with them both being blended together really well alot of the time however tho there are times where it's obvious that they used a CGI Mandalorian as the character does move weird when compared to how the characters moves when he's fully live action. However tho it would have been a little bit more better if this film was filmed on location as while yes there are several advantages to filming things on a volume stage as it does allow for the the VFX to not only been seen alot more quicker but also for the makers of this film to make adjustments to them if they need t however tho when filming on location all of the effects can then have a certain practicality to them as there would have been something there on the day for the characters to interact with and that is something that this film is missing as while yes the films effects do look good none of them feel real.
SPOILERS START HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Look to be frank this film is going to struggle at the box office and it's not due to the quality of the film or how the film was marketed. Rather it's due to the fat that much like with The Marvels this film does mainly feature characters that the mainstream audience won't know as like it or not The Mandalorian isn't a mainstream show and therefor it is going to be hard for the makers of this film to pull in that audience and convince them to watch a film with characters that they don't know this is something that The Marvels even struggled to do as that had two main characters whose only appearance in the MCU at that point was in two separate Disney+ TV shows and because of that and the fact that the film is pretty bad in it's own right that film bombed hard. This is something that could very easily happen to this film as while Star Wars fans know off The Mandalorian alot of the mainstream audience won't do and while alot of us have seen every single episode of the show the mainstream audience might not even be aware that there was a show to speak of and when they do find out about it there not likely to watch three seasons of a show just to understand the movie. As this film really doesn't explain not only who The Mandalorian and Grogu are in the first place but also what there relationship is to each other but both of those things are things that are covered in the show. This is something that any comic book TV show turned movie is going to have to deal with as they can't just appease the die hard fans anymore they now have to cater to a wider audience and this is something that could bring this film down as there are no characters in this film that the main stream audience would recognise even Zeb who is perhaps most likely to be the only mainstream character in the film isn't that well known due to the fact that he started out life on a little known animated show.
To be fair to this film it does a do something that was really shocking and does actually make this film worth seeing for. In the third act of the film they actually have The Mandalorian die as he gets bitten by a snake and eventually succumbs to his wounds after buying some of there new friends enough time to escape with only Grogu staying behind to not only mourn him but also look after him this was a pretty sweet scene as it does highlight the fact that the two characters do have a deep bond for one another with each one willing to stay behind and help the other and while the film of course doesn't have him stay dead the fact that they even had him be dead in the first place does show you that makers of this film are willing to go to those emotional places. Infact one could argue that the film would have been better if he had stayed dead as Grogu is going to live longer then him anyway and therefor he is going to see him die eventually but it is understandable as to why they didn't do it here in this film as something that's this shocking should best be saved for the series finale and given the fact that Grogu is still basically a toddler it might have been a step to far for the character to remain dead in this film, this is despite the fact that having the character remain dead would then give the ending of this film a much more darker tone as now the kid gloves would be off with Grogu as now he would be able to fully unleash his Jedi powers on there foes which yes granted might have resulted in him becoming a sith lord but it still would have gave the film the emotional weight that it really did need. However no other Star Wars film has really toyed with the idea of killing of a beloved character ad yet this film does it and it is something that does work and while it might only work for those that have seen the show even those that haven't seen the show might still feel something as the scene is just that well done with the wonderful score by series composer Ludwig Göransson really helping to sell you on this truly emotional moment.
Something that critics might not pick up on is the fact that alot of this film does feel like a live action remake of The Clone Wars films. With both films having alot of very similar scenes in them and heck even the main plot to both films is very similar as both films involve a kidnapping plot around the son of Jabba The Hutt with the only difference being here is the fact that it's the sons cousins that are trying to kidnap him and not his uncle and that's literally it as both films are just that similar to each other so much so that it does make you wonder why they bothered to make this film in the first place as the plot is just a carbon copy of anther Star Wars film plot. This is something that dies make sense when you take into account that this films co-writer and producer Dave Filoni also directed the 2008 The Clone Wars film and all this does end up doing is make him look like a lazy film maker as while both The Twins are passable characters there's really nothing to them as they just come of as being light versions of Ziro as The Twins don't have that much of a plan outside of wanting to torture Rotta for dozens of years while Ziro wanting to take very the family busisness which is a better plan as it's something that does make sense for that character even at that point in the franchises timeline where as here even tho Jabba is dead and The Twins could very easily just kill Rotta and take Jabba's throne for themselves they ever do it even tho no one would be able to stop from doing so in the first place with both of the characters just coming across as being bad characters. With the thing that any good villain should be able to do is to make your hero better due to forcing them to think outside of the box and yet here due to the fact that the Twins are ineffective as villains The Mandalorian doesn't come off as being that interesting of a character as a response to that.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly two hours and five minuets and forty seconds. This is a solid running time for this film to have but in saying this tho even tho alot of the other Star Wars live action films do have very similar running times to them this one really didn't need to be that long as the film doesn't have to set anything up thanks to its characters crossing over from the show and yet for one reason or another the makers of this film thought that this film needed to be this long with the film having more then then enough plot there to really cover that amount of running time in the first place. However tho this film really doesn't use its running time all that wisely due to the fact that this film really doesn't take the time to fully develop its plot as the film does spend alot of time on giving us cute moments with Grogu then it id does in giving us a more well thought out plot and while those cute moments do make for good trailer scenes thats all alot of them needed to be as there should have been more of an attempt to give this film a more well thought plot given that this is the first Star Wars film in close to seven years and therefor they really should have com out with there best foot forward. While the film not really taking the time to develop its characters wouldn't be usually seen as a being a bad thing due to the fact that the argument could always be made that both The Mandalorian and Grogu got there development in the show given the fact that alot of the mainstream audience that will be going to see this film might not have been seen the show there really should have been some form of character development for them with the only piece of character development that they get is right at the end when The Mandalorian decides to teach Grogu how to fly there new ship and that's really it and it's not enough as the film could have used the scene when The Mandalorian has died to give him and Grogu more character development by showing us how much they love and need each other but they don't and while they don't feel like after thoughts in there own movie there also not the movies main focus either but I really will admit that this very film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. For some odd reason alot of the critics really don't like the action in this film with it being one of things about the film that they would talk about in a negative way and it doesn't make sense we get to see lots of really cool gun fights and at the end there is a pretty ship attack scene which does look pretty good granted this this films action isn't as good as the action was in Maul: Shadow Lord but its easily more better and more fun to watch then the action in The Rise Of Skywalker. With the best action scene in the whole entire film being the films opening scene as we get to see The Mandalorian an Grogu doing what they do best and that's take out bad guys in really creative and fun ways as we get to see them take on one of the people that wants to see The Empire brought back and when The Mandalorian pretty just destroys his entire house we then see them take the fight outside with the man now in a giant AT-AT with a few others following behind him try to kill our heroes only for them to end up getting killed themselves with the whole thing coming to ahead when our heroes make the leap into the mean AT-AT to take on the bad guy but he then escapes this time rigging it to blow up in a few seconds with The Mandalorian and Grogu only just killing the man and making it alive and well, this is just such a cool action scene as it gives us everything that we want to see in an action scene featuring these two characters as we get the light comedy with Grogu taking down all of the smaller objects and we get The Mandalorian just doing all of the cool stuff with the rest of this films action being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
SPOILERS END HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overall regardless of if you think this film looks good or not please do go and see it on the big screen as this is the only way to prove to Disney that Star Wars does deserve to be seen on the big screen and while yes this film does have it's faults the film does also have alot of things going for it as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7 out of 10 from me.
