Star Wars: A New Hope Film Review
When we think of things thar are firmly cemented into pop culture one of the things that we always think about is Star Wars. As this franchise has been going on since the mid seventies and while it's not doing as good today interms of box office numbers it is still relevant due to the amount of streaming shows and specials that the franchises spawns every way and well I thought that it'd be nice to take a look back at the film that started it all and so then join me as I review the film that spawned a franchise that is still going on to this very day with the film in question being called "Star Wars: A New Hope" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when his beloved Uncle and Aunt are killed by the Empire a young farmer must team up with an old man and some new friends to noy only rescue a princess but also deliver the plans to the Empire's newest killing machine the Death Star. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. To give the film its flowers its plot is one that whilst yes it is a bit rough around the edges as it where its also a plot that is a lot of fun as it does give us a story that we not only end up getting fully invested in but also reminds us of classic fairy tails with the films plot using the classic trope of having clear cut good and bad guys with this being something that does help to make the films plot feel more like a fairy tail that just so happens to be set in space. However tho whilst there are alot of tings going for this films plot it would be daft to admit that the film has a perfect story as indeed it doesn't with the films plot being very rough around the edges his is due to the fact that this film was only George Lucas's third film and therefor he was still learning about how to make a good movie but that doesn't excuse the fact that there is alot of tell and don't show in this film with the characters explaining alot of things for alot of the time and all that does is make the films plot some more weaker when the plot on it's own is more then strong enough without the scenes of the characters explaining alot of things and infact the scenes where the characters don't explain important franchise lore end up being some of the more better scenes inn the film with the films plot coming across as being all the more better because of it with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker , Harrison Ford as Han Solo and Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia Organa , Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin , Sir Alec Guinness as Ben Anthony Daniels as C-3PO , Kenny Baker as R2-D2 , Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca , David Prowse as Darth Vader , Jack Purvis as The Chief Jawa , Eddie Byrne as General Willard , James Earl Jones as the voice of Darth Vader , Phil Brown as Uncle Owen , Shelagh Fraser as Aunt Beru , Alex McCrindle as General Dodonna , Drewe Hemley as Red Leader , Dennis Lawson as Wedge Antilles , Garrick Hagon as Biggs , Jack Klaff as Red Four , William Hootkins as Porkins , Angus MacInnis as Gold Leader , Jeremy Sinden as Gold Two , Graham Ashley as Gold Five , Don Henderson as General Taggi , Richard Le Parmentier as General Motti , Leslie Schofield as Commander 1 and Paul Blake as Greedo.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. It's a known fact that George Lucas really has no idea how to talk to his actors with him not being very talkative with the actors in this film and while that is something that could be seen as making it hard to tell on if he's a good director or not he did still manage to get some really good performances out of what was basically some unknown actors at the time and this is something that shouldn't be ignored as while we know how good of an actor that Harrison Ford is today back in the seventies he wasn't that well known with the same thing also bein true for the rest of the films actors and yet they still managed to turn in some really good performances in this film. With the best actor in this film being Mark Hamill as he does have to go from playing this really annoying almost bratty character to being this person who is willing to fight for his friends at the drop of a hat with him even juggling all of these emotions and feelings at the same time and that is something that would have been to much for a lesser actor to do and yet Mark pulls it off effortlessly so much so that it was more then easy to forget that he does go onto play THE best version of The Joker and just accept him once again as this hero who yes does struggle alot of the time but at the end does come through on the other side. With the acting that's in this very film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is the legends and really the greats are currently over at Industrial Light & Magic. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The fact that this film does have some good looking VFX in it is something that shouldn't come as a shock to anyone as ILM was quite literally made to work on this film with them putting in there best work in this film with the film for obvious reasons using more practical effects with all of the films model and practical effects still holding almost fifty years later and yet when you look at any of the effects from The Rise Of Skywalker the effects in that film already started to show there age a year after the film came out whereas here the films effects hold because of the fact that they used alot of model shots. For clarity sake this review is being based off of the 2011 Blu-Ray cut of the film as are all of the original and prequel trilogy Star Wars reviews with this cut of the film having alot of pointlessly added in CGI aliens and rocks which while they don't look bad they also do take you out of the film due to how out of place that they are with the added rock that the films adds to the scene where R2 is hiding behind some rocks being somethin that again isn't a bad looking effects but du it's placement it does cause use the audience to wonder how R2 managed to fit in such small gap in the first place where as all of the other cuts of the film don't do that.
This film should be used as the architype on how to do the heroes journey as it is something that is done really well in this film. Due to the fact that we see that Luke wants more then anything to get off of Tatooine and go quite literally anywhere else in the galaxy as he wasn't made to be a farmer and yet the first chance that he gets to do exactly that he turns the offer down in order to be with his Aunt and Uncle with it only being when they are killed off in a brutal fashion that he then decides that there's nothing left for him there anymore and decides for the first time in his life to go off world and have an adventure. This is a great way to give us the heroes journey as the film does at first go out of its way to make Luke seem like an annoying character but when he interacts with both his Aunt and Uncle we see that he does truly love them and that he just wants to get off of the planet even if it's just just a few days with the stunning binary suns shot and music being a good example of letting us into the characters head whilst not having them say a single word as in that one shot we feel how lonely Luke is as despite having friends and family on the planet with him his friends live miles away from him and he barely gets the chance to see them with him more then anything just wanting to get off of the planet and do something with his life and when he does eventually get the chance and he has no choice but accept it we do see him struggle almost to cope with the fact that the world off of Tatooine is vastly more darker and almost more real then what he had been used to but he sticks with it even when everything goes wrong and looses the mentor that he's only known for a few days tops, he sticks with it not because its easy but because of the fact that if he doesn't there could be millions more who loose there versions of a family much like he did and that is something that does make the heroes journey in this film work as well as it does as it's all based around the personal journey that the character of Luke Skywalker goes on in this film.
Out of all of the characters in this film it's Leia that does kind of get the short end of the stick in this film. As while she is key to the plot of the film for the first hour and twenty minuets whilst she is being held captive on the Death Star the second that she , Han and Luke get her back to Yavin 4 with the rest of the rebels she good as well becomes a background character and while there is an in story reasoning as to why she didn't take part in the final assault on the death Star as she is a princess and is the last of her people therefor there would be no need for her to take part on the final assault and given just how up in the Rebel Alliance that she's meant to be in wouldn't make sense for her to be that active when thigs do get dirty. However the makers of the film could have given her more to other then stand around and listen to what's going on above her as while that s great for drama as the Death Star is slowly moving closer to the base and is poised to attack at the first available moment which is great for drama it would have been just as good if she did find away on the base to help Luke out or maybe she had a talk with Han not only to find out why he was leaving them in the first place but also try and fail to convince him to stay and help them out it wouldn't have been much but it would have been something and it would have been something that is true to who she is as a character and it would have given her more of an active role in the films third act as while the film did go out of its way almost to show us that she is strong yet caring character in the escape from the Death Star outside of one scene where she comforts Luke we don't get to see her more caring almost motherly side which is something that could have been used to help to bring Han back to working with them even if it is something that did up failing.
There are alot of classic villains in the world of cinema with one of them being Darth Vader and it's not that hard to see why as he is an intimidating figure who can not only best any opponent in a fight but also choke them should things not go his way. All of these are things that do make him be this truly scary character as he is quite literally unstoppable with none of the main heroes being ale to stop him and the only one that might have been able to stop him lets Vader kill him willingly which is something that does make it look like the films heroes have no real chance of beating this character in a fight not only die to the amount of knowledge that he would naturally have on the force over any of them but also due to the fact that as was mentioned he could easily best one on of them in a fight. However there is a downside to this character and that is the fact that he doesn't have an end plan in mind and while that is something that is explained away in The Empire Strikes Back as that's when we find out that his boss in the Emperor himself it is something that does make him seem like less of a character in this film as even in this film he is there mainly taking orders from Tarkin who he could very easily beat in a fight if Tarkin so much as looks at him the wrong way and yet he puts all of his trust in him now one could argue that he was forced to work with him due to him having orders from the Emperor to do so which would be fair enough but that wouldn't change the fact that outside of only having the small plan of working out where the Rebels are something he not only knows but also gets away with there's nothing in this film that makes him be all that much of challenge or our main heroes as while yes we do see him kill of Ben which is a good way of telling us that any of the main characters can die it doesn't make Vader look all that imposing as a character whereas if he did kill of one of the generals and then killed of Ben then it would have made him out to be a big threat to the Rebels.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly two hours and four minuets and forty four seconds. With this film having a solid running time as while it doesn't technically have to set up anything in regards to the plot and the world that the films take place in due to there it takes place in the series as a whole but due to the fact that it was also the first Star Wars released it also does have to set up alot of those things and while it doesn't need to do all of that in this film due to the fact that it is apart of a saga it does mean that those things could be explored and explained over the course of those film with this film having more then enough plot there to cover that amount of running time in the first place. While this film does use it's running time wisely in one respect it doesn't take the time to fully its plot which in this case is something that could be seen as being understandable due to the fact that it is part of saga of films and therefor you could argue that te plot gets more well developed the more that the films go on but in saying this tho just speaking about this film the films plot doesn't get that well developed as the film is more focused on moving from one action set piece to the next then it is in giving us a more better plot. However the film does take the time to give us lot of character development with the best example of this being Han Solo as he goes from being this rouge character who doesn't trust anyone that wouldn't pay him to someone who would willingly risk his life for his friends with this being something that was done really well in the film as we get to see him learn to trust people with it all coming together when he saves Luke from being killed by Darth Vader himself but I really will admit that this fil really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. While the lightsaber fights in the prequel films are alot more better and faster paced then the one that we have in this fil there is an in built story reason for that and this is something that the people who hate this films lightsaber fight need to understand as both Vader and Obi-Wan (Ben) in this film aren't young men anymore there both older men and when you get old you do naturally move more slower with this films lightsaber being a good example of that as it would be more of a fight for them both to both at half the speed then what they do in the prequel film. With the best action scene in this film being trench run scene at the end of the film as that not only is filled to the brim with drama with it being possible that any of the films characters taking part in the attack could die at any minuet with us only getting very small brief moments of relief when the characters are winning the fight but alot of the time they are very much on the backfoot with all of them doing the best that they can do just to get by with this being something that does make what could have been seen as being a very boring scene, the fact that the film does even cut back to the base is something that does make the scene all the more tension filled as not only is the Death Star close to attacking the base and destroying it for good but also alot of the other Rebels are hearing everything that's going on above them and there's nothing that they can do to help out with it only being due to he fact that Han distracts Vader long enough and the fact that Luke really manages to get his shot of that the Rebels are able to win the day with the rest of the films action being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall if you want nothing more then the stereotypical Star Wars film then you can't go wrong with this one as while there other and better Star Wars films out there without this film being as good as it is then none of those films would even be a thing as this film is just that good in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad thigs that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official Star Wars fandom wiki page , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great the official Star Wars fandom wiki page this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from the official Star Wars fandom wiki page are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid the official Star Wars fandom wiki page really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
