The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Film SPOILER FREE Review
While making a video game movie is hard as nine times out of ten those movie did fail and were bad lately over the past roughly ten years or so they have been starting to get better and better. With alot of them like for example the Sonic films getting a load of sequels therefore it wasn't really all that surprising when they announced a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie and well then that sequel has just come out and since it watched the first one it only made sense that I review the second one and so then join me as I give you my SPOILER FREE review of the film introduces a load of characters from the games into these films with the film in question being called simply just "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when Princess Rosalina is kidnapped by Bowser Jr. it's up tot Princess Peach . Mario , Luigi , Toad , there new friend Yoshi and a relucent Bowser to attempt a rescue mission. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. Whilst this film does indeed have a somewhat decent plot to it there's denying the fact that the plot of the first film was much more better as that films plot had actual stakes and heart to it whereas with this film it felt like the makers of the film where just dig the bare minimum amount of effort as the plot just felt lazy and uninspired and fair enough this is a Mario movie those don't typically require alot of thought and effort to be put into them but you still need something to show that your actually trying to make a good film and yet here with this film we get a plot that is at best bare bones and just straight up not there at it's worst. As there are times in this film where you will be left wondering just what the main plot of the film is meant to be as they just pick up and drop it's plot alot of the time in this film and while yes granted the first film didn't have a strong enough plot either but you at least knew what the plot of that film was where as here there are times where it is hard to work out just what the plot of the film was meant to be in the first place where as if the film spent alot less time on the badly done done comedic stylings of Toad and Yoshi and more time focusing on it's plot then the film might have been alot more better of for it with the plot of this film not really being really rather entertaining and nor is it really rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Chris Pratt as Mario , Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach and Charlie Day as Luigi. Also starring in this film is Jack Black as Bowser , Keegan-Michael Key as Toad , Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. , Glen Powell as Fox McCloud , Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina , Luis Guzmán as Wart , Issa Rae as The Honey Queen , Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek , Ed Skudder as R.O.B. and Donald Glover as Yoshi.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. This was something that was to be expected as the previous film did have some really good acting in it and therefor there was no reason to believe that this film would be any different and it's not as all of the actors that gave us a good performance in the first film give us the same performance in this film however therein lies the problem as it's the exact kind of performance with the actors that were in the first film not really adding anything to there characters to make there performances feel different and new again with perhaps the most shocking actor in this film being Donald Glover as Yoshi as he only had one word of dialog throughout the entire film and there it's pretty hilarious that the makers of this film went out of there to get this very well known actor to play the part when it would made more sense to get a voice actor to do it. With the best actor in the whole entire film being Jack Black as Bowser as once again he really is un recognizable in this role and while the character isn't as threatening in this film Jack still does get the chance to be a really good actor in this film with the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors anything to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities is meant to be in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the animation for this film is the legends and greats that are currently over at Illumination Studios Paris. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. This like the acting isn't something that's all that surprising as the first film did have some really good animation in it as well with this film pretty much being in the Illumination style where it looks good but there's nothing interesting being done with the medium which for when this film is being released and for Illumination makes there films for is something that is to be expected but at the same time tho you do want to see something more done from there films from an animation perspective. As this film doesn't have any interesting or cool looking backgrounds with them all just feeling lifeless infact that might very well be the best word to describe this films animation as even tho there is a clear love and passion for animation as a whole in this film the animation on the whole just feels lifeless. With it being as if the makers of this film were just going through the motions as there's none of that love and passion for the franchise that was all over the first film as here it felt like that were contracted to make a sequel and weren't doing it because of the fact that they could do some really cool things from an animation standpoint. That's not to say that this films animation is god awful because it's not as alot of the characters do have some really fun designs alot of which do stay true to there video game designs and the animation when it wants to be can be fun to watch but alot of the time it's just lifeless.
This film does introduce some new characters to the film series most notably Princess Rosalina , Yoshi , Bowser JR. and Fox McCloud. Those names might mean a big something to big Nintendo fans but to the average joe such as myself those names mean nothing with the only name that stands out being Fox mainly due to the fact that like Donkey Kong in the first film Fox isn't a Mario character he's a crossover character which is weird as unlike Donkey Kong you could make the case that Mario made his debut in the first Don key Kong game and therefor including him in the previous movie does somewhat make sense but Fox hasn't been in a mainline Mario game and has no meaningful connection to the Mario franchise. If this film was being more based off of Mario Kart t would make sense as those games do have other characters outside of Mario in those games but here it just felt like pointless set up for a potential spin off almost as if the makers of this film were testing the waters with his character being in this film and are now waiting to see if the audience likes him enough to give him his own spin off movie. Where as with both Bowser. JR and Rosalina those characters do work in this film as they are both key parts in making the film work as well as it does as while what Rosalina's part in the film is won't be spoiled as it is something that does make sense once you think about it Bowser JR. going to rescue his dad is something that also works as now we get the chance to see the more fatherly side to Bowser that we never got to see in this film and while that does kind of nerf the character in this film as we do want to see him be as evil and as awsome as he was in the previous film there dynamic is something that works in this film.
Much like with the first film this film does have alot of action in it alot of which does work really well however tho where as the film found a perfect balance between comedy and action. This film seems to tip that the other way and therefor has alot more focus on comedy rather then action case in point the film does stop it's plot alot of the time to show us the more comedic antics of both Yoshi and Toad and a still shrunken Bowser with alot of there scenes not being funny and therefor when the film does get to an action scene it doesn't feel earned as the film lost all of the momentum that it was building up just to cut away to a badly done joke. It will always be a fine balancing act wen trying to juggle both the action and comedy side of things when your an action comedy however in order for them both to work together the balance needs to be even split and therefore can't favor one over the other. This is not to say that the film doesn't have some good action in it as it does with the films epic third act action scene with Mario , Luigi and later Yoshi trying to stop Bowser and Bowser JR. from killing Rosalina while Princess Peach has to try and rescue her this is something that does work as it does allow for all of the characters to do some really cool looking moves all of which do feel like moves that you could do in the video games and yet due to the fact that alot of the film does remove any tension that the film was trying to build up by cutting to these badly done jokes as we don't want to see what antics Baby Mario and Luigi get up to we want to see them building towards the films third act and while the first film did also have alot of comedic moments it also knew when to be serious and heartfelt with that being something that helped with there action scenes.
Bowser JR. as a villain on the whole wasn't that bad but at the same time tho he could have been alot more better then what he was done. Due to the fact that in this film outside of rescuing his father which he does do pretty early on the character ultimately has no end goal in mind with this being something that would be fine if he was a side villain but for one reason or another the makers of this film chose to make the main villain of the film and that is when it becomes a major issue as if you look at all of the best villains in cinema history they all have one thing in common and that's the fact that they all have an end goal in mind that ties into who they are as characters. Yet with Bowser JR. who he is is someone that wants his father back which is fair enough but who is he when he archives that goal this is something that the film doesn't give us the chance to see as the film doesn't give the character an end goal when if they did give him an end goal it would have gone miles in making us truly hate this character and find him entertaining like what alot of us did with his father in the previous film and yet that can't happen in this film due to the fact that they are so afraid of giving us a threatening villain. With the character himself not really being all that threatening as the only truly evil thing that he does is right at the start of the film when he kidnaps Rosalina and that's it with the rest of his screen time being spent chasing around Mario and friends for no reason when if they really wanted to make us hate this character then they should have had him be just as evil as his father and actually show him doing these evil things like that they did with Bowser in the first film and yet for one reason or another the makers of this film just don't that and all that leaves us with is a character that feels like a waste of a good character.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and thirty minuets and fifty three seconds. Which to be fair is pretty much the bogstandard running time for any Illumination film with this film even having just about the right amount of plot there to cover that amount of running time in the first place with this being something that does work to this films advantage as it does mean that all of the films running time has to be about advancing the plot of the film and to be fair to this film it doesn't spend any time on any pointless subplot as it does devote alot of it's main running time to furthering it's main plot. However tho this film really doesn't use its running time all that wisely as the film doesn't take the time do fully develop it's plot with this being due to the fact that the film does stop and start its plot in order to tell a lame joke which fair enough this is a comedy that's made with little kids in mind but at the same time those same little kids will remember this film more if the film did have a more well developed plot to it rather then hearing Donald Glover say "Yoshi" alot of the time as while that is funny to think about it means nothing once you take into account that this films plot isn't as well thought out as the plot of the first film was. This is also something that does effect the films character development as well as none of the films characters get any kind of character development whatsoever with all of them ending the film in the exact place where they started the film with this being something that could have been fixed by giving the films script a re-write as then the makers of this film would be able to fix the issues with the plot and give the plot the development that it needs and give the characters the development that they all needed this is despite the fact that it could be argued that alot of them don't need character development due to them being in the first film but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. While the film does have alot more better action scenes in it then it does comedy this film does spend alot more time focusing on it's comedy then it does anything else this is despite the fact that alot of the films jokes just aren't that funny with it feeling like that there wasn't as much effort put into giving the film funny jokes this time around and while little kids might very well find this film to be laugh out loud funny there still needs to alot of actually funny jokes that the whole family can laugh at and not just jokes that the little kids will be laughing at. With the best joke in the whole entire being when Toad and Peach are asking R.O.B where they can find pilots to take them to this planet to rescue Rosalina with him taking along time just in pointing to the floor where they need to go with Toad even getting mad at him which causes him to not only forget what he was doing but also start the whole thing over again which while Zootopia did a very similar joke with Flash , Nick and Judy here the makers of this film made it painfully funny by brining the joke back only this time it was Luigi , Mario and Yoshi asking where they can find the pilots with the fact that they brought it back whilst it's not as good as the first time around is something that does say that the makers of this film do still know how to tell a good joke with the rest of the films jokes being just as good in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall it's save to say that this film will do really well over this Easter weekend but it is harder to say if this film will survive getting bad word of mouth as yeah this film even when it's not being compared to the first film is still a pretty bad to average film in it's own right in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 6 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
