Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi Film Review
All great trilogies do have to come to an end eventually and while the Star Wars saga has carried on after this film. This is film that did tell the final chapter in a six film arc and that is something is quite impressive in it's own right and while Disney have found mild success with The Mandalorian and the recently released Star Wars Maul: Shadow Lord TV series they still didn't quite capture the magic that the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today managed to do with such ease and so then join me as I review the film that introduced us to Ewoks with the film in question being called simply just "Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when Luke , Han , Leia and all of the other Rebels learn that The Emperor is building a new and even more powerful Death Star they have to find a way to destroy it and him before it's far to late. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. This films plot is one that did have a tough job to do as it did have to wrap up several major storylines from the previous film and still be a good story in it's own right and while yes The Empire Strikes Back does have the better plot of the three films this films plot is still really good in it's own right as it does manage to capture both the tone and spirit of A New Hope whilst also doing its own thing. To be frank this films plot is one that could have been done alot more better as it is a bit unbelievable that the Empire would build the same Death Star with the same weakness in it even if it is the Emperor playing the long game in trying to get Luke to join the Dark Side with the films plot not being as adult as the previous films plot was as it does lean a bit to much in child territory which is something that does make sense as these films were always made with little kids in mind but at the same time tho they've just proven that they can do a more adult take on Star Wars with the previous film therefor it does seem odd that they would go back to do something that's safe and marketable for little kids with the plot being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker , Harrison Ford as Han Solo and Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa. Also starring in this film is Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian , Anthony Daniels as C-3PO , Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca , Kenny Baker as R2-D2 and Paploo , Ian McDiarmid as The Emperor , Frank Oz as the voice of Yoda , David Prowse as Darth Vader , James Earl Jones as the voice of Darth Vader , Sebastian Shaw as Anakin Skywalker , Sir Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi , Michael Pennington as Moff Jerjerrod , Kenneth Colley as Admiral Piett , Erik Bauersfeld as the voice of Bib Fortuna and Admiral Ackbar , Denis Lawson as Wedge , Mark Dodson as the voice of Salacious Crumb , Jeremy Bulloch as Boba Fett , Dermot Crowley as General Madine , Caroline Blakiston as Mon Mothma , Warwick Davis as Wicket W. Warrick , Tony Cox as Widdle 'Willy' Warrick and Larry A. Ward as the voice of Jabba The Hutt.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The fact that this film has some really good acting in it is something that's not really all that surprising due to the fact that all three of these original trilogy films have always had some really good acting in them with the fact that the actors in this film are a bunch of really good actors in there own right is something that does hit that point home even further with the films acting being helped by the fact that this films director Richard Marquand does come across as the type of director who knew how to talk to his actors to get a good performance out of them. With the best actor in the whole entire film being Harrison Ford as he does have to go from playing comedy to being deadly serious to then being dramatic and finally being an action hero all in the space of one scene near the start of the film with that being something that would be hard for any any actor to do and yet he does it with such ease that's its almost as if he had been doing that his whole life with him not being afraid to make Han be this kind of goofy but still lovable character with this being something that it could be argued helps to make his acting be all the more better due to the fact that we get to see Harrison's range as an actor. With the acting that's in this film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is the legends and the greats that are currently over at Industrial Light & Magic. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. Again much like with the films acting given just who is involved with this film from an effects point of view it's not really all that surprising that this films CGI is as good as it is as Industrial Light & Magic was quite literally created to do the effects for the Star Wars films and have done all of the effect for all of the Star Wars films ever since with this being due to the fact that there work is always top notice. Something which you can see clear as day in this film as all of the scenes in space look really good with them even managing to add reflections to the ship landing in the Death Star in the opening scene of the movie which was a nice little touch that they didn't have to do as nobody would have noticed it but they did it anyways and while yes some of the blue screen effects don't look good today as they would have done back in the eighties as you can see the outline around Harrison Ford that is more due to the fact they wouldn't have had the technology there to make it as good as the effects that we have today but what isn't excusable is the overuse of CGI in the scene where Jabba listens to a band playing for him as there was no need to add in CGI aliens to that scene as it comes across as being very distracting when having hem be puppets might have worked a little bit more better in the long run.
Something that does oddly enough seem to be a key theme in this film is that of death as we see not one not two but technically three characters all meet there end inn this film. Whilst yes it could be argued that the Emperor didn't technically die as he comes back in The Rise Of Skywalker he is for all intense purposes dead by the end of this film and heck we do get to see how Luke deals with death all throughout the film as we see when Yoda dies he is tearful as he had come to view him more as a friend and less of a teacher in this film with the two of them even shearing a sweet scene together and yet when it comes to death of The Emperor he is overjoyed because of how much evil and hatred that this man has spread not only throughout the galaxy as a whole but his own family as well with it being due to him that his mother had died and his father turned to the Dark Side and finally when Vader now back as Anakin dies he is once again tearful due to the fact that he never got to send any father and son time with his father due to the fact that they spent a good part of the films fighting each other and where therefor robbed of having that meaningful relationship with each other. This is something that can in a way make this film feel like the more adult of the three films as neither of the previous two films had death be a constant theme in the film with it only being really brought up twice in the original trilogy with the death of Luke's aunt and uncle and then the death of Obi-Wan and despite the second film taking place during a war none of the characters die in that film with that being something that does make this film feel more adult with it teaching kids the harsh lesson that sometimes good people do die and seeing Luke not only grieve the loss of two loved ones in the same film but also use that grief as a force for good is something that is uplifting to see.
It was always going to be hard to end this trilogy in a way that is satisfactory and yet it is something that this film does do kind of well. With the ending of the trilogy being of course the death of The Emperor and the destruction of the empire that is something that the trilogy was always going to be building towards but what it wasn't building towards was the fact that in order for them to do that it would mean having to turn Vader good again which is something that whilst it does make sense interms of the film with even Luke and Vader even having a scene where Vader refers to himself as Anakin for the first time in decades it is still something that doesn't work as Vader was build as the trilogy's main guy and the one that the heroes would have to defeat if they truly wanted to end this brutal reign of terror for good and yet they don't defeat him rather he turns good at the last possible second. Vader should have been someone that fell to the hands of the heroes you could still have him be Luke and Leia's father but have Luke beat him and kill him after Vader has proven Luke wrong and that there is no good left within him as then the only way for him to be this almost good person again that is free from the pain that he's in would be for Luke to kill hm with it essentially being a mercy killing there are of course downsides to this approach as well like for example how do you now defeat the most powerful Sith lord in The Emperor and the other being the fact that the Jedi are rarely shown to kill people even as an act of mercy with really the only screen Jedi to kill someone being Obi-Wan himself in Episode 1 this is something that would be a tough corner to get out off but you could do it be having the rebels blow up the Death star with Luke just barely making it out with the explosion being what kills The Emperor and Vader and not Luke himself.
Thankfully this film does fix one of the minor issues with the previous film as they do have the main trio be together for the vast majority of the film. While yes they do split up in the end here its done in a way that does make sense as Luke is going to try and talk some sense into Vader as he does see the good in him even if he doesn't see it himself whereas in the previous film it came across as Luke just wanting to get away from them for selfish reasons which is something that does feel out of character for him whereas here him sneaking off to go to the Death Star feels in character as while he doesn't know if he'll make it out alive or not he also can't afford to let people know this as that would jeopardize the mission at hand. With another good thing about the film being the fact that we get to see not only that Lord Vader has essentially a boss but we also get to see just how powerful that he is with him always thinking three steps ahead with him not only knowing but also counting on the fact that the rebels are on Endor and that some of them are going to try and blow up the Death Star with his plan being to break Luke's spirit and get him to join the Dark Side much like he did with his father which yes it could be argued does make him a bit of a one trick pony but the fact that we get to see just how smart of a villain that he is in the first place is something that does make him alot more better then all of the villains that we got in Disney sequel era and while he doesn't really get to do all that much in this film what little The Emperor does do in this film is always impactful and the fact that he was perfectly willing to kill of Luke is something that does make him a good villain as not ever Vader got as far to killing Luke in there first battle then what The Emperor does in his first fight with Luke.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly two hours and fourteen minuets and forty seven seconds. Which to be fair to this film is a decent amount of running time to have and given the fact that this film has to wrap several storylines as well as the storyline from the first five films as a whole this is really a film that does need that amount of running time as there would be no way for it to do all of that and still a good story in its own right if the film was even ten to fifteen minuets shorter with the film itself even having the right amount of plot there to cover that amount of running time in the first place. This is also a case where the film does use it's running time wisely in both respects as the film does take the time to fully develop its plot due to the fact that the film is resolving the saga's plot and isn't telling a new story and even so the film still add thing into it that do make the story feel alot more thought like the fact that the rebels have to destroy this one base on Endor in order to help out there friends in space which is a nice little addition as is the fact that we get to see how little impact the empire has had on the Ewoks as they are still pretty much living there normal lives as they did prior to the empire even being a thing in the first place. The film does even take the time to fully develop its characters with Darth Vader going from someone who is without a doubt the bad guy of the films to someone who is an ally for Luke with Vader even going as far as kill off his former master when The Emperor is about to kill of Luke not because of the fact that it's the easiest thing for hm to do but because its the right thing to do even tho that is the very thing that does cost him his life with this being something that the Vader even in the previous film wouldn't be able to do and yet due to the development that he gets in this film he is able to be Anakin Skywalker once again but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. While alot of the fans of the Star Wars prequels do criticise the lightsaber fans in the original trilogy films for being more slower paced and less for lack of a better word flashy given the fact that Vader in this film is meant to be an old man that is something that does make sense with it being Luke that gets to do all of the flips as he is alot more younger then Vader and would therefor be able to do such things without so much as even breaking a sweet with the lightsaber fight in this film being really well done with the thing that makes it so good being the fact alot of it is in shadow with Vader taunting Luke as that is something that makes the fight feel more personal then what it already is. With the best action scene in the whole entire film actually being that very same fight due to the fact that it does lead to The Emperor getting killed off with the thing that makes it work being the fact that we get to see the gears in Vaders head turning as he works out what to do should he save his son and risk his own life or should he stand by and do nothing and let Luke die with him choosing to risk his own life to save not only his sons life but also that of alot of people in the galaxy with that kind of storytelling being something that is missing from alot of the more Disney era sequel trilogy with the rest of this films action being just as good in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall whilst this film does of course lead us to the sequel trilogy this was still a really good way to end this story as it gave us everything that we wanted to see in what was believed to be the final ever Star Wars film at the time whilst also giving us things like likable characters and villain redemption story that we didn't know that we wanted to see in the first place in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly an 8 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got al of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the Star Wars fandom wiki page , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great the official Star Wars fandom wiki page this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from the official Star Wars fandom wiki page are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid the official Star Wars fandom wiki page really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
