Spider-Man 2002 Film Review

Spider-Man is a character that has been around for decades and is perhaps one of the most well known comic book heroes of all time. Therefor making a film out of him is something that does make sense as the character was popular enough with kids thanks to the nineties animated show and with comic book fans yet the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today wasn't the first or even the second live action Spider-Man movie it was the fifth one as there are three films from the classic American Spider-Man TV show and then there was one that was made in Japan and so then join me as I review the film that gets Peter Parker right but Spider-Man wrong with the film in question being called simply just "Spider-Man" enjoy.

The plot of this film is when teenager Peter Parker finds himself bitten by an enhanced spider he finds himself coming face to face with a villain that's hell bent on getting him to join up with hi to take over New York City. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. To put it bluntly this films plot does feel the most like a comic book in all of the best ways possible as we do of course the classic Spider-Man origin story only now it's slightly more updated which is fine as it is something that does work in it's more modern setting and we even get moments that do feel like they were ripped right out of the comics themselves. Plot wise yes this film could have been more better in certain respects as alot of the time the film doesn't really have much of a plot with it just following Peter going about his day to day life which would be fine if this was a TV show as there you do have to spread the plot across several episodes however this is the film and therefor you do need to be alot more focused on the plot and while it does make sense that the film doesn't focus on it's plot all that much as that does free up time to let us get to know both Peter and Norman as people rather then just as characters that is still something that could have been done and still have the plot be alot more focused just by giving us more scenes that are all about pushing the films plot forward with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker / Spider-Man and Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn / Green Goblin. Also starring in this film is Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson , James Franco as Harry Osborn , Cliff Robertson as Ben Parker , Rosemary Harris as May Parker , Joe Manganiello as Flash Thompson , Bill Nunn as Joseph "Robbie" Robertson , Elizabeth Banks as Betty Brant , Macho Man Randy Savage as Bonesaw McGraw , Bruce Campbell as The Ring Announcer , Octavia Spencer as The Ring Receptionist and J. K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The fact that this films acting is as good as it is sin something that's not really surprising as all you have to do is look at how good that the actors are in this film and right away you know that you are in for some really good acting in this film and when you add in the fact that this film is directed by Sam Raimi who is known for getting good performances out of his actors then it doesn't make it all surprising that this film has a high level of acting in it. With the best actor in this film being Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker / Spider-Man as even tho he does get Spider-Man wrong by not playing him this is confident person which is what Spider-Man is he does get Peter Parker right as he is the complete and total opposite of what Spider-Man is as Spider-Man is meant to be this cool and confident character who always has a joke to tell Peter Parker is meant to be the nerdy kid next door and to be fair Tobey Maguire does look like that kind of character with him being able to pull of Peter Parker alot more then he is Spider-Man and while he does get slightly better as Spider-Man the more the film goes on with him even getting in a few jokes here and there it doesn't take away from the fact that the rest of the time he does get the character wrong. With the acting that's in this very film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

Doing the CGI for this film is Sony Pictures Imageworks , Digiscope , Pixel Magic , Amalgamated Dynamics , Gentle Giant Studios and Gilderfluke & Co. Inc.. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. While this films CGI is good for the standards of the time in which this film was made it's not all that good when compared to the CGI that we get in more modern day comic book films and while this is to be expected it is also something that is really noticeable in the film itself. As while the films CGI web and backgrounds do look pretty good even for the time this film was made in what lets this films CGI down is the fact that the digital doubles that they use for certain characters look a bit to fake as while alot of them do look good when they are in the dark that is mainly due to the fact that we the audience can't really see them all that well with the bits that we can see looking as good as could be expected and yet when they move them into the light for a few scenes or are lit more that's when they fall apart yet this is something that is of no fault of the makers of this film as they can only do so much with what they have to work with rather it's due to the fact that the technology there to create convincing digital doubles of characters just wasn't around at the time or if it was it wasn't around for very long when this film started production and while it is something that would be improved upon in the second film it is something that is still a black mark in this film as it does take you out of the film.

While the Green Goblin isn't a ad choice of a villain for this new version of Spider-Man to go up against. He is a character that isn't done all that well in this film as while the idea of Norman and Peter having this father and son relationship while Green Goblin and Spider-Man are fighting each other is a good idea the character on the whole is one that should have been alot more better due to the fact that outside of wanting Spider-Man to team up with him he really doesn't have all that much interms of an actual plan with it feeling like that Green Goblin is just doing these things for no reason whatsoever whereas if he did have more of an overarching plan then it is something that would have made him a more better villain. While the character is a decent enough first villain character as he's clearly not as well thought out as say Doc Ock is for example he is easily alot more better then this worlds version of Venom but at the same time tho there are other villains that could have been used that would have filled in that role just as well like for example either Shocker or Electro would have worked just as well as there clearly not Spidy's most well known villains and therefor having either one of them be the first villain that this version of the character goes up against does make sense as with Green Goblin he is more of a second film type of villain due to the fact he can test Spider-Man alot more when he's done right and yet here due to the fact that he's meant to be the first villain for this hero he has to be weakened down just so that Spider-Man could believably beat him which is something that does do a disservice to the character. Another thing that doesn't really work for the character is the mask that the character wears as it does look like somethin that you could buy cheaply at a halloween shop and not something that a multimillionaire would make.

Part of what made these early 2000's Spider-Man films stand out from all of the other comic book films that were being made at the time was the fact that these film felt human. As they let there characters go through these very real and very human emotions with this being something that we do get to see in this film as we get to see Harry struggle with the fact that even tho he is filthy rich his father quite clearly cares more about work then he does in just being there for his son as that's all Harry wants and that kind of wanting to just want someone that you love to just be there with you is something that alot of people can relate to. This is something that we do see all throughout the film and while it does take away alot of the comic book factor of these movies it replaces it alot of the time with something that works just as well for the films that being a heart as due to the fact that we get to see the characters expirence these kinds of emotions it means that we the audience get more of a chance to care about them and want to see them succeed as we know what it is that they've been through heck even Peter expirences very really emotions in this film due to the fact that we get to see basically his two father figures die in the film with the first one of course being Uncle Ben and the second one being Norman Osbourne yet it's due to the fact that we see him go through these emotions and expirence those pains that it makes his victories even the small ones seem all the more bigger and yet if the film had robbed of any of those more human moments it would make the film feel like a bad comic book where it has all of the iconography but none of the heart.

It's save to say that we all know the greatest comic book movie phrase of all time "with great power comes great responsibility" comes from this film. With this one phrase being the perfect thing to some up Peter's journey in this film in a way that has it make sense for the mainstream audience and yet still makes sense for the die hard fans of the characters as well and it is something that is kind of lost in alot of other modern comic book films as they all try to over complicate the meaning behind the words and what it means to be a hero and yet with these six words it is something that does sum it all up perfectly whilst also telling us that the heroes journey is one that is never easy as there will always be losses in people's personal life and those losses can effect you in any way possible if you forget to take the responsibility for your powers and do what's right. Heck this is something that we see Peter himself struggle with when he let's the robber escape when he very easily could have tripped him or held him down and yet because he was more focused on getting back at the wrestling booker for not giving him the money he was owed he let him escape which in turn led to the death of his beloved Uncle Ben and yet by the end of the film we see him take responsibility for that by refusing to go out with Mary Jane not because of the fact that she will go out with any that breathes but because of the fact that if he does it would be putting her life in danger and if the film had lost that great power scene all of that meaning behind the rest of the film would have been lost. While it could be argued that Mary Jane doesn't really do all that much in this film which would be a fair point to make what she does do is help to hit home just how dangerous Peter's life now is as we seen Green Goblin almost kill her not once but twice and yet it's Peter that has to save her and therefor when he does refuse to date her he's doing so because of the fact that he truly does love her more then anything else in this world.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly two hours and one minuet and twelve seconds. With this film really needing all of it's running time in order to tell its story in a complete manner as they not only have two origin stories to tell on both Peter's and Norman's but they also have to set up this films world and all of there side characters and what there relationships are like not only with the side characters but with each other and you can't do all of that and still a good story in a shorter amount of time and while yes this films plot does come off as getting a bit of the short end of the stick due to how much the film has to squeeze into it's running time if this film had removed any of its scenes it would have made the film feel incomplete. With the film having the right amount of plot there to cover that amount of running time in the first place and yet this film doesn't use it's running time all that wisely due to the fact that the film doesn't take the time to fully develop its plot which is due to the fact that the makers of the film have so much other things in this film that the film does start to crumble under it's own weight and if the film had removed some of the stuff with Harry and Mary Jane then it would allowed for scene that do develop it's plot in some small way. Heck the film doesn't really take the chance to develop alot of it's characters with the only character to get character development in the whole film is Peter Parker himself as he does have to learn how to be a hero and what it takes to be a hero and yet the rest of the films characters get nothing even if it's just something small when they should have gotten something as there was no way of knowing that this film would get a sequel as those just weren't done all that often with comic book movies and yet even the films characters are well done not alot of them get the character development that they really did need but I really will admit that this film really did have some really good pacing to it tho.

So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty pretty good. While yes the action in this film isn't as good as the action in Spider-Man2 for example this films action was alot more better then what it really could have as by all rights this films action could have been really bad yet because of the fact that they got Spider-Man fan Sam Raimi to direct the movie it does mean that we managed to get some good looking action scenes that do stay true to who both Green Goblin and Spider-Man are as characters due to the fact that we get to see him not only use there powers and technology against each other but also there brains. With the films best action scene being the scene where Green Goblin attacks the parade as we do get to see just how deadly that this character is when him even willing to attack his own son if it means getting whatever he wants all the while we see Spider-Man essentially doing damage control as huge portions of a building are falling down everywhere with him saving as many people as he can do left , right and centre which is something that we don't get to see many superheroes do in comic book form and while we don't get to see the two of them fight we don't need to see Spider-Man take on the Green Goblin just yet as that's meant to be the main event and that attack on the parade was essentially there first match together with it being a very well done action scene with the rest of this films action being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall whilst the Tom Holland Spider-Man films have made the character even more popular for today's generation it's important to note that without this film giving us genuine human emotion then we wouldn't have gotten the other Spider-Man films in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7.5 out of 10 from me.

Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
