Carry On Regardless Film Review

The Carry On films are films that people of a certain age in the UK will have very fond memories of be it because of the fact that they saw them when they were being released in cinemas are because they saw them over the years being broadcast on TV. Sadly tho this generation doesn't seem to be interested in these classic British comedies which is a shame as sometime you do find one that lacks plot but has good jokes in it such is the case with the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today and so then join me as I review the film that even both it's screenwriter and one of it's stars don't like that much with the film in question being called simply just "Carry On Regardless" enjoy.

The plot of this film is a bunch of unemployed people go to work for this company that sends out to people to help out in whatever situation and that's it. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really bad. While the Carry On films are known for having at best thinly drawn out plots that are nothing more then an excuse for the characters to get into some wacky hijinks they at least have plots to speak off whereas with this film all they have is the basic set up of the film and that's it. No joke there's nothing in this film that says that there's a plot being told as alot of the time we are just watching these bumbling characters go about one job to the next and that's really it which is great for the comedy but at the same time the film still needed to tell us an actual story in order to justify it's existence however to be fair to this film the set up is a really fun set up and is one that does allow for there to be alot of comedy in the film. However the lack of a plot is something that does hinder the film as while the film does start to have a plot near the end of the film where the companies landlord says they'll kick them out of the building unless they raise a certain amount something which he had try to do before hand by that time it's far to little to late, as we the audience have already checked out of the film and are waiting for the film to end whereas it really is something that really would have made a great looming threat like maybe the landlord tells the owner around the halfway mark but for one reason or another the owner forgets only for him to be reminded of it near the end of the film which yes isn't much but it's better then what this films gives us with the plot of this film not really being really rather entertaining and nor is it really rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is Sidney James as Bert Handy , Kenneth Connor as Sam Twist and Charles Hawtrey as Gabriel Dimple. Also starring in this film is Kenneth Williams as Francis Courtenay , "Professor" Stanley Unwin as The Landlord , Joan Sims as Lily Duveen , Liz Fraser as Delia King , Terence Longdon as Montgomery Infield-Hopping , Bill Owen as Mike Weston , Esma Cannon as Miss Cooling , Freddie Mills as 'Lefty' Vincent , Fenella Fielding as Penny Panting , Hattie Jacques as Sister , Joan Hickson as Matron , June Jago as A Nurse , Sydney Tafler as The Strip Club Manager , Judith Furse as The Headmistress , Howard Marion-Crawford as The Wine-tasting Organiser , Jimmy Thompson as Mr Delling , Patrick Cargill as The Raffish Exhibition Customer , Molly Weir as The Bird Woman , Kynaston Reeves as Sir Theodore , David Lodge as The Connoisseur , Jerry Desmonde as Martin Paul , Ambrosine Phillpotts as Yoki's Owner , Nicholas Parsons as Wolf , Cyril Chamberlain as A Policeman , Cyril Raymond as An Army officer , Eric Pohlmann as The Sinister Man , Julia Arnall as Trudy Trelawney , Terence Alexander as Trevor Trelawney , Victor Maddern as The First Sinister Passenger and Norman Rossington as The Boxing Referee.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With this films acting being alot more better then what it really had any right to be as by all rights given how bad that this films plot is then the acting should have been equally as bad and yet it's true testament to series director Gerald Thomas that both he and the films amazingly stacked british comedy legends manages to turn in some really good and at times quite funny performances in this film as they very easily could have turned in performances that really aren't up to par with the rest of the films in this franchise. With the best actor in this whole entire film being Kenneth Connor due to the fact that he does get more of a chance to be funny in this film and while he does play pretty much the same character as he does always play the character that is one bad day away from having a nervous breakdown he does it so well in this film so much so that it is easy to imagine him being a main actor in one of the Carry On films as he is just such a joy to watch in this film. With the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just s bad due to the fact that this films script doesn't really give any of this films actors a alot to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

Character wise this film doesn't really fair all that much better sadly as there's not really all that much to any of this films characters. As to be frank there really isn't alot to this films characters and while that is pretty par the course with the Carry On films here it is something that does effect the film even more then what it would have done as this film more then the others does feel more character driven and yet the makers of this film don't take the time to give us well thought out characters, with all of the actors in this film in this film playing the kinds of characters that you would expect them to play in the Carry On films. Heck Liz Fraser gets nothing to do in the film and is purely there so that the film can have her appear in her underwear in a tasteful but still very cheeky way this being something that Liz herself didn't like as she is quoted as calling it "exploitative" but she did also understand why that type of scene was included in he film but it is something that does make you wonder why she was even in the film in the first place as she doesn't have alot to do and is barely in the film in the first place. This films characters could have done with a little more time spent on them as while yes these Carry On films were made yearly that still isn't an excuse for having characters that are at best thin due to the fact that there is alot of potential to be had with these characters like for example with Kenneth Williams character they could have made him this snobbish type of character and really play up to the working mans crowd that these films usually appealed to the most which is something that the film could have used to get some laughs out of and yet they don't much like how they could have done literally anything with Charles Hawtrey's character and he would made it work and yet they don't this is despite the fact that both character did have the potential to be some really fun characters.

Look to put it bluntly this film does for the most part feel like a series of loosely connected sketches with there being nothing that ties them together. As alot of the time that's basically what this film is it's a sketch comedy show that's being stretched out to a feature length running time and while being a sketch comedy show is fine for a TV show but for a film you do expect things to be connected to each other and yet that's something that this film doesn't do with it feeling like nothing in this film actually matters as we don't see any of the characters get in trouble for messing up a job nor do we see anything from there clients after they've done the job which again is fine for a sketch comedy TV show as then you could make the case that they were only meant to be characters in that one sketch and that's it but this is a film and therefor it needed to be treated differently. The best way to think of this is to picture if for alot of the time the character in Monty Python And the Holy Grail spent time apart from each other and not doing anything that's related to the quest and instead just spent time having there own adventures it would lessen that film as the whole point of that film is to follow those characters on this quest and therefor the sketch show format doesn't quite work, well it's the same thing here as the point of this film is to follow these inept characters true and fail at various jobs and seeing them bond over the amount of failures that they have and the film can't do that when it's stuck in this sketch show format as it makes the film feel less impactful and feel more like something that you'd be able to see on TV for free which again lessens the film as for a film you want to see characters that you like reach there goals in a good plot and you can't do that if the plot is changing every few minuets.

Just to give you all an idea of how badly done that this film is alot of the time both the films writer Norman Hudis and one of it's stars Kenneth Williams hated the film. Sith Hudis saying that he hated the landlord character and feeling that the ending felt a bit to much like a pantomime with him unfairly shouldering the blame himself as he did call the film a mess however he shouldn't be the sole one to blame for the film turning as it did as while yes he did write the film he was also beginning to feel the strain of turning one of these out every year and the films script was given the OK by series producer Peter Rogers. Another person who hates this film is one of it's stars Kenneth Williams who wrote in his diary "Saw Carry On Regardless which was quite terrible. An unmitigated disaster" which to be fair it is kind of hard to argue against that point as it's quite clearly not as good as the other Carry On films are but at the same time tho this film isn't meant to be as good as the others are it's just meant to be a fun and charming distraction from every day life and that's it and that is something that this film does do really well as it does give you characters that whilst they aren't as well thought out as they should have been are still fun characters that you do end up liking due to there more cheeky nature and the fact that they are just tryin to do their best in any given situation this doesn't make the film good however. With it being something when both the writer and of the stars of the film openly admit to this film being one of the more weaker Carry On films as while Hudis did leave the franchise after the next film Williams would star in pretty much all of them up until 1978's Carry On Emmannuelle which is more weaker then what this film is.

Whilst this film does get quite alot of things really wrong it does also get some things right like for example the film does have a running joke where the characters can't always hear things properly which is something that does lead them to have these funny hijinks. Be it Sam thinking that he's a spy after being told to get off at the fourth bridge when he was really told that the client needed a fourth to play bridge with the whole scene with him on the train being a complete tour de force for Kenneth Connor as we get to see him just be his usual looney and stressed out self thinking that he's being asked to be a spy when that isn't even the case at all. While yes the film does have moments of brilliance in it with there being a sequenced  set at a hospital where we get to see Sid James be his more usual charming self the film isn't bothered about those moments and instead more time on being basically a glorified sketch show and while that does lead to some truly brilliant moments in the film alot of which would only have worked on a Carry On film they do also highlight just how bad the rest of the film is as while I personally loved the ending to the film as it had that typical Carry On chaos that you expect from the ending of a Carry On film it is also something that does come out of left field as it was only set up in the previous scene and yet it is meant to be a key scene in the film and therefor should have been set up alot more earlier with this only hitting home the point that these films did need fresh blood behind the scene to show things from a new perspective and to highlight different comedic aspects as this film much like the others does make something that was going on in British life funny that being the fact that people were finding it hard to find jobs, yet the film doesn't do anything all that creative with it's set up whereas if the film did have a different writer tackle the subject then we might have gotten a film that did show us something new and still funny.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty six minuets and thirty eight seconds. Which is the running time that you do expect these films to have as it is pretty much the bogstandard running time for all of the Carry On films with this film not even having the right amount of plot to cover that amount of running time in the first place due to the fact that this film basically doesn't have a plot outside of it's already pretty thin premise, yet there was still potential in this film as if the makers of this film did devote sometime to fixing the films lack of plot by actually giving it one then the film could have worked yet they don't as they are instead more focused on packing the film with jokes then they are in giving us a good plot. As the film doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as the film doesn't take the time to give us a any kind of plot development with the quite literally the only kind of plot development that we get in the whole entire film happening in the final ten minuets of the film when it is something that really should have been happening all throughout the film due to the fact that the films premise does allow itself to have some plot development even if it's just very basic stuff it would still show that there was some thought and effort put into this films script and plot. This is something that does also effect the films lack of character development as all of this films characters do feel like stock characters on a TV sketch show which would have been if this was a sketch comedy show but it's not and therefor there should have been more time put into this films characters to not only make them feel more developed as character but to also make them memorable but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.

So now then as this is a comedy tat really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With the films comedy being the best part of the film as this is not only where the film but also the script but Norman Hudis is allowed to shine as the film does have this very quick and witty dialog where there are jokes being thrown at you left , right and centre with the film handling it's humor in the typical Carry On fashion in that all of the films jokes are the types of jokes that you would find on British postcards as it's that type of cheeky humor that is harmless but still quite fun to listen to as well. With the best joke in the whole entire film being the films final scene where the staff are tasked with cleaning up this old house that there landlord has bought with the promise being that if they did a good job he'd give them a ninety nine year lease on there current building only for the water and the electric to not be switched on and the staff do finally get the water on due to the fact that one of their own left the tap on they all get drenched head to toe in water in hugely comedic ways as they all fight to turn it off in turn wrecking the building that they are meant to be cleaning up, yet when they do turn it off the landlord then comes in and congratulates them on reading his mind as he has decided to tear the house down. Which is just the icing on the cake as that whole sequence is meant to be pure chaotic and fun and that's exactly what it ends up being with all of the main characters in the film getting a chance to show us why they are so funny in the first place with the rest of the films jokes being just as good in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall whilst this film might be one of the more weaker Carry On films it's for sure not the weakest one out there as Carry On Emmannuelle might have that pleasure, however tho there is still alot of good to be found in this film as the film does have alot of funny jokes in it and alot of really good performances but you do have to sit through alot more of the bad stuff to get to the good stuff tho in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself itself a grand old score of exactly a 5.5 out of 10 from me.

Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally got used in this very review from Amazon . Co . Uk and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great the official Star Wars fandom wiki page this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
