The Super Mario Bros. Movie Film Review

Mario lovers we are just a few short days away from the release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and well with video game movies getting better and better recently. It does make sense that for the tie in review it be of the film that whilst it doesn't start the trend of these movies being good as that honor does go to Sonic The Hedgehog it is a film that does still prove that video game movies when there made well can be hit films and so then join me as I review the film that gave us the song "Peaches" with the film in question being called simply just "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" enjoy.

The plot of this film is when investigating what's causing Brooklyn to flood underground plumber brother Mario and Luigi discover a pipe that leads to the Mushroom Kingdom where they along the kingdoms princess and a few others have to stop the evil Bowser from taking it over and destroying it for good. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / resented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. While this film is mostly made for little kids the films plot is shockingly well done and was alot more better then what it really should have been due to the fact that this is a plot that does feel like it was made by Mario fans for fans of the fans of the characters instead of just taking these iconic character and having them do or say things that feel out of character or put them in a dumb plot with this being a plot that could actually be the plot of one of the Mario games or one of the spin-off games and nothing would need to be changed about the plot as a whole as it just fits in so well with the idea of this being a video game movie. While yes there are some set backs to the films plot like the fact that the plot on the whole does feel really underbaked with it feeling like that the plot was secondary to literally anything else in the film or for example the fact that the plot doesn't take advantage of the fact that it's two main characters are plumbers yet these are things that don't stop the films plot for being a fun plot tho with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is Chris Pratt as Mario , Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach , Charlie Day as Luigi and Jack Black as Bowser. Also starring in this film is Keegan-Michael Key as Toad , Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong , Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike , Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek , Eric Bauza as Diddy Kong and The Toad General , Khary Payton as The Penguin King , Charles Martinet as Mario and Luigi's Father and Giuseppe , Jessica DiCicco as Mario And Luigi's Mother , Mayor Pauline , A Yellow Toad , Baby Luigi's Bully and Baby Peach , Rino Romano as Uncle Tony , John DiMaggio as Uncle Arthur , Juliet Jelenic as Lumalee and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / resented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The fact that this films acting was as good as it was was also something that was quite surprising as for films by Illumination you don't usually expect them to have good acting in them you just expect the acting to be nothing more then OK at best and while yes granted this films acting isn't going to set the world on fire it's easily better then the acting in Illumination's version of The Grinch. With it really being a no brainer just who the best actor in this film is as while it would have bee easy to say that it's Chris Pratt due to the fact that he's playing the main character the best actor in the whole film is quite easily Jack Black as Bowser due to the fact that he manages to not only hide the fact that it's him playing the character so well then unless you knew he was playing the character you wouldn't recognize his voice but he also makes the character sound even more threatening and intimidating then what you'd think that he would have been given the fact that this company mainly makes films for little kids with this being something that must have been hard on his voice and yet it pays off so well in the final cut of the film. With the acting that's in this very film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and aa good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

Doing the animation for this film is the legends and the greats that are currently over at Illumination Studios Paris. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the about the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual animation that's actually featured / resented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The films animation being as good as it is is something that's not really all that shocking as for all of there faults Illumination do one thing right and that's the fact that they put alot of really good animation in all of there films with this film being of no exception with all of the characters looking like how they do in the games. This is something that does help the film as it does show us the audience that the makers of this film cared about the games and were actual fans of the games as there are little things all throughout the film that does make reference to the games with the only thing that doesn't do that is the fact that the film doesn't look like a more updated version of the first Mario game which is understandable and heck even doing the film in 3D CGI instead of going 2D is something that does work well enough in the films favor as it does allow for the makers of the film to make things like Mario's mustache and Luigi's hate for example look better then what they would have been able to do in 2D. With another example of how good that this films animation is is the fact that they do replicate the feel of playing Mario Kart with your friends as we get to see just how good that Rainbow Road looks and while it of course would have been better if the film did give a little bit more thought to it's animation as they do make it hard to tell just which toad is Toad none of that effects the films animation all that much.

Whilst it would be understandable for the film to make references to the Mario games as this is afterall based on a video game. What was totally unexpected was the fact that they make reference to the Super Mario Bros. Super Show as in the advert that Mario and Luigi made the song that's playing in the background is the theme song to that show and that is quite the deep cut reference as your not going to get that reference unless you was born either in the early nineties or the eighties your just not going to understand what it is that the film is referencing and yet it's the fact that they did reference an obscure animated show in this film that does help to prove that this film was made by the fans for the fans as only the die hard fans would have known what it is that they are referencing in the first place. Yet despite the fact that the film is jam packed with references to pieces of Mario history the film doesn't feel like it's overstuffed with them as they use them at just the right moment with the references not even lasting that long in the first place they last just long enough for us the audience to work out what the reference is and then they move on and that's it. With a really smart reference not even being a reference to anything to do with Mario it's to do with classic side scrawling video games as when Mario and Luigi are running to there first real pluming job the films then switches to a wide shot which makes it look a side scrawling video game with Mario leaping to the foreground and the background much like you can do in those games with the fact that the film even brings it back for the third act only now it's with Donkey Kong being something that does show you that the makers of this film are classic old school gamers.

This film is more of an action comedy then anything else which is something that's to be expected as the games are light hearted action games. However tho this film does put alot more effort into it's comedy then it does it's action which is something that's to expected as this film is being directed by the co-developers of Teen Titans Go Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic however tho they don't let that hold them back as this film does have some really impressive action in it be it Donkey Kong beating the living heck out of Mario or even the Mario Kart chase scene both of which do work really well an help to feed the overall plot of the film. However tho alot of the action scenes in the film are so boring to watch as noting interesting are even all that cool happens in them with this being due to the fact that the makers of the film really wanted to make sure that we knew that this is a comedy as they stop the action from being as exciting as it could be by having the characters make a joke during them which at times does undercut the tension of the scene and while that would be fine for Teen Titans Go as that show is meant to be more of a comedy then an action show it's something that doesn't quite work in this film due to the fact that the characters do have this big earth shattering threat to deal with and therefor they can't just stop and make a joke. Yet if the film did put as much thought and effort into it's comedy then it does its action then we could have gotten some really fun and creative action scenes in this film as this is mean to be set in a video game world and therefor they aren't bound by the laws of our world which is something that does leave them open to doing things that would defy the laws of gravity as it very easily could be written of as being a video game movie.

I'm just going to be real with you all Bowser in this film is a really scary villain and while that is something that might put some people off of watching the film. The villain is always meant to be scary and the fact that he wants to take over the Mushroom Kingdom for no other reason then he can is something that does work within his character as is the fact that they do make him this kind of goofy character that is madly in love with Princess Peach so much so that he not only wants to marry her but has also written a song all about her these are things that do make him feel like more of complex and fun character to watch in this very film as he could very easily switch from being funny and goofy to dark and scary at the drop of a hat. This is something that the live action Super Mario Bros. movie from the nineties forgot to do as  they focused on him being more scary which is fine as he is afterall the main villain of the film but at the same time tho this is also something that's meant for little kids and therefor he should be a little nit more goofy and fun loving and while the fact that the Bowser in that film is the least of the nineties films issues as they do have moments where he is goofy which do come out of nowhere. The version of the character in this film fully knows when he needs to be scary and when he needs to be goofy with the fact that he's only this goofy character in private making the fact that he's this dark and scary character out in public almost seem like an act that he's putting on and yet when he is this fully scary villain that's when the character really does shine as we see him not only almost kill Luigi but also beat up Mario pretty much to within an inch of his life as of course there never going to show blood in this film but it's pretty obvious in the third act fight that he is beating up Mario pretty badly with this being something that does make a really good villain.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty eight minuets and forty seconds. Which is pretty much the bogstandard running time for an Illumination film as none of there films go over the one hour and thirty minuet mark and to be fair to this film this film does have the right amount of plot there to cover that amount of running time in the first place with the film pretty much getting the plot of the film started right from when the film opens and given how short that this film is it does make sense that all of this films scenes are about advancing the films plot in someway shape or form with the only thing that does bring down the film in this regard being the fact that the ending fight with Bowser does go on a little bit to long as the fight moves from the Mushroom Kingdom back to Brooklyn for no real reason when it really didn't need to as it could have stayed in the Mushroom Kingdom and it would have worked out just fine. This film also doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as it doesn't take to fully develop it's plot with this being again due to the fact that the film does have a really short running time with this being a bit of an issue as this film does demand a slightly longer running time and given the fact that the films plot should always dictate how long that a film should be then the makers of this film should have cut out alot of the third act fight and gave that screen time to giving it's plot some development and heck they even could have used it to give it's characters some development as outside of Mario , Luigi and maybe Donkey Kong none of this films main characters get any kind of character development even Peach who up until this point has been a solid character gets no character development in the film and she's meant to be a main character in the film but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.

So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. To say that this films comedy is good would be a huge understatement as this is where this film does truly get to shine as alot of this films jokes do land and land hard with this being due to the fact that this film does have alot really funny in the film something which will always make animated comedies such as this one be all the more better as those people will know how to make a bad joke be somewhat funny. With the best joke in the whole entire film not being anything that any of the main characters say or do rather its the character of Lumalee as this character is quite literally just a blue star and yet it says all of these dark and possibly disturbing things all of which are funny on their own but then you add in the fact that the character has a very innocent childs voice it suddenly makes all of those things that it's saying be all the more funnier as now you get to imagine a kid sat there recording these dark lines for the film. Yet that's not the only funny scene in the film as the scene where Mario is training to come on this mission with Peach is quite funny in it's own right as is the fact that Mario deduces that Peach passed the course on her first try something which does make sense as she was raised in the Mushroom Kingdom and heck even characters like Bowser and Luigi get some funny scenes in the film and that is something that the makers of this film really did have to do but they went ahead and they did it anyway with alot of this films jokes being really good and funny jokes in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall to say that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has alot to live up to is a huge understatement but the fact that they've got the same directors and writer back is huge step in the right direction as for this film tho it's not that hard to see why it made well over a billion dollars at the box office as while it's not a perfect film by any means it is still a really fun filled film that all of the family can enjoy and watch together in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7 out of 10 from me.

Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very revie well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from Blogger . Com , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
