Godzilla Vs. Megalon Film Review
Godzilla has been destroying Tokyo and sometimes America for close to seventy years now and over that time he has seen a great deal of heights. However he has also seen just as many lows with the character going from a titan of terror that should be feared by all and loved by none to someone that kids should openly route for and while the film that i'm going to be talking about isn't one of the worst Godzilla films out there it is one of the worst Japanese Godzilla films out there and so then join me as I review the film that has Godzilla doing his famous sliding tail kick with the film in question being called simply just "Godzilla Vs Megalon" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when when a race of underwater beings called the Seatopians unleash a monster called Megalon to take over the land it's up to Godzilla and a size changing robot called Jet Jaguar to save the day. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad as while the films plot is beyond all measures of being campy that was also the trend for alot of the Godzilla films at the time however whilst it worked for alot of those films it doesn't work here as they take it one step to two far in this film with this films plot feeling more like a parody of what a Godzilla plot should be like with this being due to the fact that the film was a rushed production and therefor no one could ask the films writer and director Jun Fukuda to do a rewrite and heck it's not even Jun Fukuda as it's him and Shinichi Sekizawa that helped to come up with the plot of the film and yet because of the fact this film was really rushed into production it does mean that things lie the plot of the film do suffer because of it whereas if the makers of this film did take there time in getting the film made then the plot could have been alot more better as there is the basis for a fun plot here it just needed to be done alot more better and while the films plot is still decent it's also not as good as the plot to the other Godzilla films were either with the plot of this film not even being really rather entertaining and nor is it really rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Katsuhiko Sasaki as Inventor Goro Ibuki , Hiroyuki Kawase as Rokuro Ibuki and Yutaka Hayashi as Hiroshi Jinkawa. Also starring in this film is Robert Dunham as Emperor Antonio Of Seatopia and Seatopian Agent On Motorcycle , Gorō Naya as The Voice Of Antonio , Kotaro Tomita as Lead Seatopian Agent , Wolf Ohtsuki as Seatopian Agent , Gentaro Nakajima as A Truck Driver , Sakyo Mikami as The Truck Driver's Assistant , Tsugutoshi Komada as Jet Jaguar , Shinji Takagi as Godzilla , Hideto Date as Megalon and Kenpachiro Satsuma as Gigan.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With all of this films actors turning in some really good performances which is something that really couldn't have been easy due to the fact that they only had enough time to one take of each scene in the film as that's how rushed this film was and while the films acting doesn't really suffer because of this there are times in the film were it does feel like that doing a take two would have helped the films acting get a little bit more better as the acting from Hiroyuki Kawase is a bit wooden which isn't his fault as he was only a kid at time but if he did do a take wo then his acting could have been a little bit more better then what it is in the final cut of the film with the films best actor being Shinji Takagi as Godzilla as while he's not as good as Haruo Nakajima but given that Haruo had spent decades playing the character and while this is the first film to feature Shinji as Godzilla that is understandable with Shinji's take on the character being more youthful and athletic which is something that does wok with his performance with the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that the script for this film is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Look to be frank no one ever comes into a Godzilla film expecting to see well thought out human characters and in this degree this film is really good as it's human characters aren't that well written either. With them all coming across as being really dull and boring characters with the kid character Rokuro only being added into the film as a way to appease the films kid audience as he really adds nothing to the films plot and is just you stereotypical kid character and that's really it when the films adult characters not really being all that interesting either a the film doesn't really give them anything interms of a personality which is something that you do come to expect in a Godzilla film as you come mainly to see Godzilla but here in this film they ask you spend so much time with these human character and so little time with Godzilla that what would have been seen as being really small issues now become bigger issues because of the fact that your being forced to focus on them and while yes Godzilla films have always had badly done characters even dating back to the the original film but those films at least knew to make those characters likable and memorable whereas here in this film all of it's human characters even the ones that your meant to hate come across as being really bland characters that your going to forget five minuets after the film ended as they all do feel like an after thought in this film with the only human characters that are somewhat relevant to the films plot being Antonio and Goro and that's it as the rest of them weren't needed at all and yet they take up screen time that would have been better used by giving us more scenes with Godzilla doing his thing as that's that we've come to see this movie and not the films very badly done attempt at human characters.
Believe it or not there was going to be a TV show spin off featuring Jet Jaguar that was going to air on Nippon TV. However one of the heads at that station said that there only interested in doing newly created superheroes and not ones that are already established which is how we got the show Zone Fighter which is technically canon to the Godzilla as this show takes place inbetween this film and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla with characters like Godzilla , Gigan and King Ghidorah appearing in the show on a regular basis which is just weird to think that a film that created to capitalize on the tokuzatsu trend that was happening on TV ended creating one of those type of shows in the first place with Godzilla being a semiregular character in the show which was also the kind of role that he would played in the Jet Jaguar show as well and yet even with this star power the show only lasted around about twenty five episodes before it ended and really isn't talked about and hasn't been talked about sense which is odd as this is show is technically apart of the Godzilla lore and yet nothing from it be it it's characters or even the fact that Godzilla has a cave that he apparently lives in haven't been mentioned or referenced in any other Godzilla film when it is something that could have be brought up in a really cool way even if it's just as a joke as that then would show you that the makers of the films are embracing everything to do with Godzilla be it the good , the bad or even the downright ugly as everything about the Godzilla franchise should be brought up in some way shape or form and yet Toho are hiding this show away almost as if here ashamed of it when really they should be talking about as it was technically a live action Godzilla TV show.
There are two things that this film is really known one of them will be getting talked about later on in this review as you just have to when you talk about this film but the other thing that this film is infamous for is it's use of stock footage. As the film is good as well ninety percent stock footage it might be a little less then that but there's so much stock footage in this film that it is laughable with this mainly due to the fact the special effects department at Toho just wasn't getting the money pumped into them that they were getting before hand and the fact that this film had a production schedule of three weeks which for a film like this is such a short amount of time with it being really obvious in the films third act as they have Godzilla and Gigan break of from the Jet Jaguar and Megalon fight just so that they have the excuse of using alot of the fight footage from Godzilla Vs. Gigan with even alot of the destruction scenes coming from other Godzilla and monster movies and all of it painfully obvious as it looks so much more better then the rest of this film and yet if the special effects team got alot more money then could have been able to create some really cool looking fight scene with lots of really good looking destruction something which we know that they are capable of doing thanks to them doing it just one film prior in Godzilla Vs. Gigan and yet for one reason or another the head over at Toho instead chose not to give them more money which is something that forced there hand into reusing footage from other and quite frankly better Godzilla movies with this being something that alot of other people have pointed out.
Megalon himself doesn't really look all that bad as he's basically a giant bug which metallic hands and that's really it. Which is fine as the character was essentially made out spare parts from school room and to be fair even with that in mind the character doesn't look as bad as he perhaps should have been with him even having some cool looking powers like the ability to shoot beams of light out of the antenna on his head and the power to throw bombs out of his mouth which is something that he does put to great use in the films third act as it's thanks to those bombs that both he and Gigan manage to trap both Godzilla and Jet Jaguar in a ring of fire but at the same time tho it would have helped the character out alot more if we got to see more of his personality and what it is that makes him tick as while having him be a character that godzilla can fight on the ground does help we the audience aren't given a reason to feat him out side of the fact that he's working for the bad guys and that's really it when it would have helped him out alot if we got given a reason to fear him as then we would want to see Godzilla come and beat him up and yet we get nine of that as the film is more focused on showing us how Jet Jaguar works then it is in giving us a well crafted villain King Ghidorah works as villain as we get to see how deadly he is with him killing people left and right and yet due to the fact that the film is so watered down we don't get to see Megalon do any of that when that is something that would have made be more threatening character that we want to see alot more of and while teaming him up with Gigan does work as we already have a reason to hate Gigan if anything it makes Megalon look more weak as a villain as we don't have a reason to hate him.
Now then this film ha / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty one minuets and thirty seven seconds. Which to be fair to this film is pretty much the bogstandard running time for the Godzilla films at this point in time and yet even so this film still feels oddly shorter then that as while the film does have more then enough plot there to really cover that amount of running time and yet the film really doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as the fil doesn't take the time to fully develop it's plot with the film being more focused on giving us pointless scenes with the films human characters then it is in giving us a well thought out plot with this being something that could have been fixed quite easily just by giving the film a much more longer running time as then the film could have those scenes with the human characters and it could also fully develop it's plot as well with this also being something that could fix the fact that the film doesn't really take the time to fully developing any of it's characters with us knowing as much about all of it's characters coming out of the film then we did coming into the film and yet if the film was even five minuets longer then that would allow for scenes where the film can fully develop it's characters as right now all of the films characters feel very dimensional which is something that does make alot of sense as the film basically only had one script completed for it with alot of the films issues stemming back to that fact as the film and its characters would have been alot more better if the script was given more time to be worked on but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well hen in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. With the worst thing about the films action being the fact that the film has Godzilla somehow balance on his tai and deliver a sliding dropkick to Megalon which is already funny enough but then for one reason or another the makers of this film thought it would be a good idea to literally use the same footage again for no reason whatsoever which is something that makes this film be all the more laughable then what it already is in the first place with there not really being a good action scene in the film as alot of the films action is just reused footage that worked well in the film it was originally in but here seems obvious and out of place due to the fact that it's obviously being taken from another film with what little new footage that there is in this film action not looking that good due to the fact that here wasn't that much of an effects budget to make them as good as they could have been heck there's even one scene where they literally use a toy as Jet Jaguar all of these are thing could have been fixed if the films effects department had alot more money pumped into it as we come to a Godzilla film to see some really cool action and that is something that is a big let down as while there is alot of love put into this films action scenes the makers of this film just can't make them as good as they really could have done and because of that the films action does suffer in this film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall while Godzilla 1998 is easily the worst American Godzilla this film is easily the worst Japanese Godzilla film as the film just lacks everything that makes the typical Japanese Godzilla film good with the film being more focused on being a kid friendly film then it is in being a good film in general in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad thigs that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 4 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all pf the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from Wikizilla and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Wikizilla this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Wikizilla are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Wikizilla really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
