The Great Muppet Caper Film Review
To say that The Muppets have made some really well known films would be a huge understatement as Kermit and the gang have really made some really painfully funny films in their time. With the likes of The Muppet Movie and 2011's The Muppets being a good example of this and yet it's their second feature film that alot of people remember alot more fondly as while people really connected with the emotional side of both The Muppets and The Muppet Movie with the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today that really connected with the films comedy and so then join me as I review the film that features a cameo from The Muppets creator Jim Henson with the film in question being called simply just "The Great Muppet Caper" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when a famous fashion designer has her jewels stolen it's up to to journalist twin brothers Kermit and Fozzie along with photographer Gonzo and the rest of The Muppet gang to work out who stole them and why. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good with this films plot being one that was oddly refreshing as alot of the more modern Muppet movies would have the gang trying to put on a show to raise money and yet here there actively working to prevent a crime whilst still getting into all the Muppety chaos that there famous for with this film plot being a good example of just how well that these characters could work on the big screen as they give them a big screen worthy plot that is more then worthy of being the plot of the movie and whilst the same thing was also true for The Muppet Movie here it's done with a certain tongue in cheek that oddly makes the movies plot more fun to watch with it being helped by the fact that this films plot is a really strong plot and one that's really well thought out as it's made clear as day that the makers of this film really wanted this films plot be alot of fun and that's exactly what it is and to the films credit that's all it needed to be as this is a plot that doesn't need to be as emotional as The Muppet Movie it just needed to be fun and that's really it with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is this films director Jim Henson as Kermit The Frog , Rowlf The Dog , Dr. Teeth , Waldorf , The Swedish Chef , The Muppet Newsman , Zeke and Photographed Man At The Restaurant and one of this films producers Frank Oz as Miss Piggy , Fozzie Bear , Animal , Sam The Eagle and Gramps. Also starring in this film is Dave Goelz as Gonzo , Beauregard , Zoot , Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Lubbock Lou , Jerry Nelson as Floyd Pepper , Pops , Lew Zealand , Louis Kazagger , Crazy Harry and Slim Wilson , Richard Hunt as Scooter , Statler , Sweetums , Janice , Beaker , Bubba and A Cab Driver , Steve Whitmire as Rizzo The Rat and Lips , Louise Gold as Annie Sue and Lou , Kathryn Mullen as Gaffer The Cat , Caroll Spinney as Oscar The Grouch , Dame Diana Rigg as Lady Holiday , Charles Grodin as Nicky Holiday , Michael Robbins as Henderson , Peter Hughes as Stanley , Erica Creer as Marla , Kate Howard as Carla and Della Finch as Darla.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With all of this films actors be they playing the films human characters or playing the films Muppet characters all turning some really good performances in their right which is something that does make alot of sense for alot of this films actors as all of the Muppet performers are of course reprising their roles from both The Muppet Show and of course The Muppet Movie and in the case of Dame Diana Rigg are a really good actor in their own right as well with this film being one of a few Muppet films where the acting from the human actors more then matches the quality of acting from the Muppet performers with it for once being hard to say just who the best actor in this film is as really any one of this films actors could make that claim and it would be totally justified as all of this films actors are just that good with it coming across as Dame Diana Rigg isn't quite playing up to The Muppets in the way that Charles Grodin is but she's also not going the Sir Michael Cain approach either by treating them as actual actors rather she's just doing a blend of the two and that is something that works for this film with all of this films muppet actors quite clearly having a blast playing their respective characters with the acting that's in this film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Another realm where this film shines is it's characters as you can tell right from the first shot in the film that the makers of this film really did put alot of thought and effort into there characters. With all of The Muppet characters acting exactly how you'd think that they would do in The Muppet Show only now it's much more bigger with Kermit having a sarcastic side to him that makes him less the loveable leader of the gang that Disney turned him into and instead keeps up as this stressed out person who is just trying to get by which is something that does work for this film as he Fozzie and Gonzo are fighting to keep there jobs at the newspaper that they work for and therefor it does make sense that Kermit would be this kind of stressed out with all of the muppet characters not only sounding like themselves but also feeling like themselves as well as you can tell that this was made by the same team that made The Muppet Show as all of the films muppet characters are written to be these really fun loving characters that each have their own quirks to them that make them standout with a good example of this being Gonzo who here is the groups photographer but he's also the one that's willing to try and do anything that's a way to crazy for the other characters which does feel like a natural extension of his character from The Muppet Show where he would do all of these dares and when it comes to Fozzie whilst he's not telling bad jokes he is a bad reporter but is still someone who is willing to do whatever it takes to help out his friends and the same thing is true for all of the muppets as they all retain the core of what it is that made them work so well on TV.
Where the film does somewhat faulter tho is in it's human characters as none of them are that interesting. Even when compared to the film Muppet characters which is something that does make sense as no one is going to see this film to see the films human characters there going to see it because of Kermit and Miss Piggy but in saying this tho there should have been some effort into making this films human characters at the very least somewhat interesting and heck the film out right tells you who it is that that stole the jewels in the first scene of the film which granted might have been the point as then it allows the film to be more fun but it does also mean that we are left with these hugely lovable puppet characters having to work out which bland human character stole these jewels as there's really nothing interesting about his films human characters outside of who is playing them and that's it and that would be fine if those characters were meant to be nothing more then cameos and that's it but there not there meant to be main characters and therefor there should have been just as much thought and effort put into them as there was the films muppet characters and heck the film doesn't tell us why Nicky wants this very valuable jewel in the first place when that is something that would have made his character seem all the more interesting then what he already is but for one reason or another the makers of this film didn't bother to do that which does mean that we are left with a bunch of uninteresting human characters in a mystery that gets solved by the end of the films opening song and that's really it as there's nothing to these human characters at all.
If there's one thing that these first two Muppet films are known for it's for pushing just what it is that you can do with a puppet. With this film being of no exception as we do get to see some really impressive scenes with The Muppets that do make you wonder just how they managed to pull it off in the first place like for example in the movie we have a scene where's there's several Muppets all riding a bike all of which you can see there full body off and that is something that does make you wonder how they did as today it would be CGI but back in the day when this film was being made that wasn't the option therefor the makers of this film had to use remote control to control the bikes and the characters with there also being an entire sequence full of shots that have you wondering how they did it as Miss Piggy does have kind of a dream sequence where we see her go underwater and swimming around with real people and then climb to the top of a small tower where we can see her full body and it's stuff like that that does make Jim Henson a really creative person as he did find really creative ways to make those shots possible and while there are some shots where they do use an actual human being for shots of Miss Piggy like when she's riding the motorbike near the end of the film alot of the time it is stuff that no one would have known how to pull and yet the makers of this film pulled off and because of that it makes you believe that these characters are real people because you see them do things that a puppet couldn't possibly do in real life and it's that kind of creativity that does make this film and alot of the other early Muppet films stand out because of it.
Unlike the first film which has alot of songs that are really well done and really loved to this very day the songs in this films feel a little flat. With the songs in this film being written by Joe Raposo who also did the score for the film as well as write all of the films songs and yet there's nothing that makes this films songs stand out or make you feel anything which is usually the bread and butter for a good Muppets song just look at "Halfway Down the Stairs" from The Muppet Show which yes was based off of a poem by Winnie The Pooh creator A.A. Milne but as a song it was a really good song that was simple where as a song like "Bein Green" which was also written by Joe Raposo is a more emotional song about how hard life is for everyone not just one particular person and yet whilst this films songs are good there lacking that extra special something that makes a Muppet song great with the best song in this film being "Hey A Movie!" as it is a really fun filled song that does get you in the mood for the rest of the film as the song does let you know just what kind of chaos thar your in for during the rest of the film as the segment is all about how Kermit , Fozzie and Gonzo are happy about being in a movie whilst everything around him is causing Sweetums pain and agony with another decent song being "Happiness Hotel" as that song is a good way to introduce alot more of The Muppet characters all the while getting across just how horrid the hotel that the gang are staying in with all of this films songs being really well written and sung by the films Muppet actors with the only thing that would have made this films songs all the more better was if they had a song that was more emotional as that's when we get to see that these characters can people emotional with how how good that those songs really can be as well.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and thirty seven minuets and fifty two seconds. Which to be fair to this film is a perfectly solid running tome for this fil to have and it's a running time that alot of the other Muppet films do seem to have as well with this film having the right amount of plot there to really cover that amount of running time with this film even using it's running time really wisely as the films plot is really well developed with alot of the films plot development coming from the films jokes as the film does make jokes about forced plot exposition which does help to add development to the films plot and while it would have been nice if the film did develop it's plot through it's songs as that would then help to make the songs all the more memorable then what they actually are with the film even taking the time to fully develop alot of it's characters with all of this films characters feeling like fully formed three characters that have flaws and faults that they have to overcome but it would have helped the film if the films human characters got some character development as the only characters that get character development in this film is The Muppets as they have the entire previous film and The Muppet Show to get there character development but either way it was nice to see them get character development in this film as well as it does show us the audience that the makers of this film really did care about The Muppets as characters with that love and passion for those characters coming through in this film and yet despite the fact that the film human characters aren't that well developed there is still some love for those human characters but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy thats actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With the film having plenty of laugh out loud moments be it from Kermit saying to Gonzo that he'd only be able to try jumping out of the balloon at the start of the film without a parachute once to seeing just how badly done the human sized Miss Piggy costume is when she's only meant to be a few feet tall and yet none of those are the best jokes in the film as that honor goes to where both Kermit and Miss Piggy break the fourth wall when Kermit says that Piggy's acting is bad and they have this full blown argument whilst breaking the fourth wall which is just such a good idea and it is something that these characters would do as Kermit would call people out and Miss Piggy would of course think that her acting is perfect and would get defensive when her skills as an actor are called into question with the joke feeling more like an argument between Jim Henson and Frank Oz then it is an argument between two fictional characters which is something that does make the joke seem all the more funnier because of it with the film even having a painfully funny running joke where Kermit and Fozzie are meant to be twin brothers only no one can tell that there twins unless Fozzie wears his hat with that joke getting more and more funnier each time that it's told as that's just how funny that that joke is with the same thing being true for the rest of the films jokes as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall whilst The Muppet Movie is easily the best early Muppet movie out there and for good reason this film despite lacking a good mystery is still a good film in it's own right that does have plenty of good laughs that will have people laughing as that's just how good that this film is in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly an 8 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used used in this very review well then boys an girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
