Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) Film Review

For every good comic book movie out there there's a Barb Wire as there are quite alot of painfully ones being made all the time. Yet even so Hollywood studios seem to always learn the wrong lessons from it with the lesson that they learnt here is that they put the wrong character at the centre of the movie and so then join me as I review the film that has so many titles that it's laughable with the film in question being called simply just "Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn)" enjoy.

The plot of the film is after she breaks up with The Joker Harley suddenly finds that all of Gotham hates her and so has to team up with a cop , a singer , a vigilante and a child thief to remove the target from her back. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really bad with the films plot putting alot more focus on Harley and not the title characters which would have been fine if this was billed and marketed as a Harley Quinn solo film but it wasn't and yet the plot of this film makes her out to be the main character of the film and while this films plot foes have the potential to be good as it is a fun filled plot it's also one that puts more focus on all of the wrong elements as the film doesn't focus on it's main plot at all which in turn makes what could have been a really fun plot feel generic and boring with the plot of the film not even being the strongest plot out there as the film is more focused on shoving Harley down our throats then it is in telling a good story when it would have helped if the film had actually put it's plot front and centre and not give into to who was the most marketable character heck this was something that the Birds Of Prey TV show got right as they focused more on the plot of the show then there more popular characters and yet here the focus is more on the more popular characters then it is giving us a good plot which makes what could have been a really good plot feel lifeless as there is potential in this films plot to be really good it just needed a better writer and director to bring it out and that's it with the plot of this film not really being really rather entertaining and nor is it really rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is one of this films producers Margot Robbie as Dr. Harleen Quinzel / Harley Quinn and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Helena Bertinelli / The Huntress. Also starring in this film is Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Dinah Lance / Black Canary , Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya , Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz , Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain , Ali Wong as Ellen Yee and Ewan McGregor as Roman Sionis / Black Mask.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With all of this films actors really trying there best to turn there best to turn in a good performance the only issue is is the fact that this films script really doesn't allow them to do that just that even Ewan McGregor who can usually make a bad film good with his acting here just feels underused and wasted with alot of this films actors feeling miscast take for example Mary Elizabeth Winstead who is passable as The Huntress but you just take one look at her and you don't buy her as that character with the same thing being true for Ali Wong as well with the films best actor being quite clearly Margot Robbie as she is is just a pure joy to watch in this film with it being helped by the fact that she's the only one that oddly feels perfectly cast in this film and even then that's not a plus for this film as she's reprising her role from Suicide Squad and yet it's clear as day that she is really is trying her best to get the character down perfectly with her being the only one where it comes across as them having a deep love for there character with this being helped by the fact that she's had the experience of playing her character before now and therefor for she would of course no how well to best portray her character with the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

Doing the CGI for this film is Method Studios , Luma Pictures , Wētā FX , Image Engine Design , Crafty Apes , Instinctual VFX , Exceptional Minds and Pix Entertainment. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad as you can tell that there was some level of though an effort put into making them look good the issue is tho is that alot of this films effects just look like the kind of effects that you'd expect to see on The CW as yes it's clear as day that this film really didn't have a huge effects budget which is something that does make sense as this film isn't an effects heavy film but at the same time it does mean that the films effects have to be really good in order for them to fit right in with the film and yet that's just not the case with this film as the film makes it obvious that what we're watching wasn't done for real and was instead done in a computer when all that does is age the films effects quite badly as they very very easily could have done the explosions at Ace Chemicals as a miniature and it would have looked ten times more better then doing it in CGI as would Harley and Cassandra's arrival to the carnival as there was no need to that in CGI and yet they did and it just looks horrible as the whole point of CGI is to blend in with live action and become invisible and here we have two separate that stand out like a sore thumb and while the film does have some decent looking effects like Harley's pet hyaena for example this is a film that does have more dreadful looking CGI in it then it does good looking CGI.    

Whilst it does make sense from a marketing point of view to make Harley Quinn the main character as she was the more well known character at the time. One has to wonder why they bothered to put her in a team up movie when the team itself isn't the main focus of the film as alot of people are going to see this film to see the Birds Of Prey and not see Harley Quinn and yet if the idea was to always make Harley be the main star of the film then why not just make a solo Harley Quinn movie as they very easily could have done that as this film is good as well a film version of Harley Quinn And Her And Of Harley's and yet by naming the movie Birds Of Prey people would expect the titular group to not only be in the film alot more but also be the main focus of the film and yet not only are they not the main focus of the film they also barely appear in the film at all either as a team or as there separate characters which makes the whole film feel like one big lie as we were promised a Birds Of Prey movie and yet what we ended up with was basically a solo Harley Quinn movie where the Birds Of Prey where just the guest stars and that's it and that would have been fine if this was a Harley Quinn solo movie but it's not and never was that it was always meant to be a Birds Of Prey movie so why not make them the main stars of the film granted they weren't as well known as Harley Quinn was but Iron Man wasn't that well known back when he got his first solo movie and it worked out just fine so why not have this movie be the first Birds Of Prey movie as then if it did fail people could say that it was because of the fact that the mainstream audience doesn't really know those characters which would have been a fair point but it also would have been better then the entire marketing for the film including the films title lying to us and heck the films title even got changed a few times after the films release in a bid to boost up sales for the movie.

To give this film some very small amount of credit it does know when to be a fun film as when the Birds Of Prey are finally working together with Harley we do get some banter between all of them. With the film even having some fun visuals to it which serve to highlight just how nuts Harley Quinn herself is but alot of the time Gotham itself just looks a little bit to clean whereas it should always look like this dirty and grimy city that is always on the edge of a civil war as that adds some character to the city itself and yet by making it look as clean as it is in this film it just makes the city look like any other city from any other superhero movie heck the movie could have said that it takes place in Metropolis and it would have made just as much sense as there are vert little things that tie it directly to Gotham itself bit again credit where it is due the films more out there visuals are perfect for Harley as a character as she is a more out there and wacky character and therefor having the visuals in the film go to those more wacky and out there places does make alot of sense with the only thing that could have made the visuals a little bit more fun to watch being if we got to see those more wacky looking visuals not just from the point of view of Harley but from the point of view of those around her as that would have given as a stark contrast to what Harley thinks is being shown and what is really happening as well and yet for one reason or another the makers of this film play it save with the films visuals when given the fact that this is a comic book movie with a more wacky and insane main character they do have permission to go to those more extreme and out there places.

If you thought that Taskmaster was done dirty in both Black Widow and somehow done even more worse in Thunderbolts. Then get ready to add another character to that list as they do Roman Sionis just as bad as that character was done in Black Widow as even tho this character is known for wearing a black mask alot of the time to hide his face here they do what the makers of the 1995 Judge Dredd film did where they have the character once or twice near the end of the film with him spending the rest of the film maskless which OK fair enough Ewan McGregor is in the movie and you want to show his face but then don't have hm play a character that's known for always wearing a back mask have him play a different character it's as simple as that heck they could have had play either The Mad Hatter or Dr. Hugo Strange either one would have worked for the more zany nature of the Harley Quinn and yet they have him play the only character the has his face hidden alot of the time with this not really being helped by the fact that characters plan just doesn't work as he wants to get a diamond that Cassandra has eaten to get the codes for an account that holds alot of money in it and that's really it and that just doesn't make sense given the fact that the character is already rich in the first place when it would have worked more sense if he was trying to take over Gotham and was going to use the funds from the diamond as that would have made sense for the character but the makers of this film give this character a plan that is just so generic that it could have been the plan for any movie villain as it's not something that only he would want to do in the first place.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and forty nine minuets and one second. Which for this film is such a short amount of time as this film has alot of new characters introduce and it can't do that and do them all justice with a shorter running time with the film not even having he right amount of plot there to cover that amount of running time as at best this film has about as much plot to cover one hour and five minuets at the most as the rest of the films plot is just pointless filler all of which is narrated by Harley who just doesn't shit up in this film and all of those pointless scenes are ones that could have been cut from the film as they add nothing to the plot of the film with this film not even using it's running time all that wisely as the film the film doesn't take the time to fully develop it's plot as the film is alot more focused on giving us alot of scenes with Harley then it is in developing it's plot and giving the characters that should have been the main characters pointless flashback scenes then it is in further developing it's plot with it's plot feeling more like an afterthought with the film not even developing it's character either as the only character that feels developed is Harley Quinn herself and even then it's really more due to the fact that she's been in more DCEU films that's it as the rest of the films characters are given nothing interms of character development and yet alot of them are meant to be the main characters of the film and the film really can't even spend more then five minuets away from Harley to give them the development that all really did need in the first place but I really will admit that this film really does have some really bad pacing to it tho.

So now then as this is an action film tat really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally tought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With the films action being the best part pf the film as that's where the films gets to be the most fun as we get to see just how fun and creative that this film could be which makes the rest of the film all the more worse when you see just how generic that the rest of the film really is and while alot of this films action does have Harley in it which is something that could get a little bit boring the film does enough to keep those scenes interesting by giving us some really fun visuals with the film best action scene being the third act act fight in the carnival as that's when we get to not only see Harley at her most insane but also when we get to see the titular Birds Of Prey actually do something important in an action scene as we get to see just what it is that all three of them bring to the team when it comes to fighting skills with that scene even making way for some humor as well like when Harley randomly changes her shoes to roller boots something with Dinah does question when she had to the time to that and it is something that does make that action scene be all the more fun then what it already was in the first place with the film really coming alive with it's action scenes as they are all really good action scenes in there own right as well with alot of them showing that despite the rest of the film being mediocre there was some genuine thought and effort put into this film and it's action senes in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall it doesn't matter if you know this film by Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) , Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey or just Birds Of Prey this film is still just a generic film that is best left forgotten about due to how generic and average that the film is in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 5 out of 10 from me.
