Wicked 2024 Film Review
Last year there was but one film that I unfortunately able to review but was able to watch on it's own and ever since that day I made sure to wait until we were pretty close to the release date of the now titled Wicked: For Good. Well guess what we are now just a few short weeks away from said film and i've finally been able to review the film for you all and so then join me as I review the film that will make you forget that this films director was also the same guy who directed THAT Jem And The Holograms film with the film itself being called simply just "Wicked" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when she is enrolled at a prestigious school Elphaba befriends popular girl Galinda Upland where the two of them discover a bond that will cause one of them to be good and the other to be wicked. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty so freaking good with this films plot being one that was a whole lot more better then what it really had any right to be as by all rights this films plot should have been really bad but due to the fact that it was a fresh take on the works of author L. Frank Baum and original Wicked author Gregory Maguire it allows itself to be something that we haven't seen before now and because of that this films plot can be fun and can be tragic both at the same time and while yes there are somethings that do feel underdeveloped in the films version of the plot then what might be better explored in either Gregory Maguire's original book "Wicked: The Life And Times Of The Wicked Witch Of The West" or in the original musical version of the same book there's no denying the fact that this films plot and indeed the core plot of both the book and the musical are always going to work due to the fact that the themes in both of them are universal themes and are themes that aren't really limited to one medium or the other something which they very easily could have been if the story was in the wrong hands with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp , Ariana Grande as Galinda Upland and Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar. Also starring in this film is Ethan Slater as Boq Woodsman , Bowen Yang as Pfannee , Peter Dinklage as the voice of Dr. Dillamond , Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible , Marissa Bode as Nessarose Thropp , Bronwyn James as ShenShen , Andy Nyman as Governor Thropp , Courtney-Mae Briggs as Mrs. Thropp , Keala Settle as Miss Coddle , Aaron Teoh as Avaric , Sharon D. Clarke as the voice of Dulcibear , Colin Michael Carmichael as Professor Nikidik , Jeff Goldblum as The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With all of this films actors turning in some really good performances in their own right when that was something that was completely unexpected as alot of this films actors are very little known actors or haven't really done anything noteworthy and therefor to expect a good performance from them would have been well and truly shocking and yet that's exactly what they give us with it being clear as day that this films actors really do know how these characters would act in any given situation as they have such a good grip on their respective characters and while Ariana Grande does have excellent comedic timing and while she does indeed turn in a good performance in this film it's hard to buy her as a serious dramatic actor when all she does is say these funny lines or act like a complete and total air head alot of the time and while this is something that des make a lot of sense as she is more well known for her comedic roles then for being a serious dramatic actor here it kind of felt like she was overplaying the comedy in certain scenes and underplaying the drama when it should have been fifty fifty Cynthia Erivo understood this and because of that she is the best actor in this film as she plays the character pitch perfectly with her having solid comedic timing with her knowing when to tone down the comedy for the character and go full blown dramatic which is something that really does work for her character with the acting that's in this film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out pf them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is Clear Angle Studios , Dimension Studio , Framestore , Gentle Giant Studios , Industrial Light & Magic , OPSIS , Outpost VFX and The Third Floor. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good with this not really being all that surprising as the film has shockingly alot more practical elements in it then it does CGI ones with the films effects being blended into the films live action elements really well as a result of that with the best example of his being the films opening scene where a kid runs through a field of flowers usually this would involve fully CGI flowers just due to how many of them that there are but not in this case as in this case every single flower in that scene was there for real with the film really only using CGI when it needed to like to create The Wizards giant head and face for example and that's great as that's how CGI should be used as while yes you very easily could have build the wizards giant head and face for real but there would still need to be some CGI involved as you'd still need to animate the facial movements at that point you might as well just do a fully CGI creation which is what happened here with this film being the case of an effects heavy film not really needing alot of effects with the films CGI being made all the more better because of the fact that you don't really notice it in the first place and the fact that it's only being used to create something that you can't create in live action.
Glinda in this film was the hardest character to get a handle on as there are times where she seems like a total air head but then the film will show her using her feminine wiles to convince her male classmates to do things for her. Which doesn't seem to be very good of her even tho they all say that it is and while her being an ai head basically does lead to some really funny moments with the character it also feels at odds with who the character is and what her character arc for the film is trying to be as she spends the film trying to be liked by others and yet she already is liked by others which makes it pointless and while her friendship with Elphaba is sweet as the two of them process the very thing that the other needs with Elphaba being book smart and Glinda being street smart both of which are things that the other is lacking in it doesn't stop Glinda from being that likable as a character with her coming across as someone who means well but just does everything wrong which fair enough might be the point of her character but if the makers of this film really wanted us to buy into her friendship with Elphaba then they should have given us a reason to care for Glinda as well as she does come across as being this shallow and selfish person something which Elphaba herself does indeed call out during the films climax but at that point it's to little to late but in fairness to this film tho this is part 1 of a two part film and therefor of course the character isn't going to be getting any character development in this film as odds are that's going to be save for the next film but there still should have been some seeds being sewn for that character development to come tho.
Whilst this film does still fall into the trappings that all two part films do indeed fall into due to the very nature of them being nothing but a build up for the second part. Here tho it is something that does work to the films advantage as this film is meant to be like a play and all plays are told in two acts with this films just covering the first half of the musical and that's it and so therefor the film does have that natural cut off point already instilled into due to the fact that this film is being based more off of the musical then the original novel that the musical is based off of where as films like Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1 for example they don't have that natural cut off point in the story and therefor it feels like that there stories are just coming to full stop when they are just really getting going but here tho it instead feels like that the film is taking a pause in the story with this being because of the fact that the makers of this film really wanted to do right by the musical's story and even tho they tried to cut things out from the musical to make it fit into one film they found that by doing that they'd be risking the doing damage to the films over arching plot and therefor it does make sense for this film to be a two part film as this is a story that really couldn't be told in one singular film but in saying that tho the makers of this film really should have learnt from the all of the other two part films and try to finish of at the very least some of the story in this film even if it was a plot that really no one cared about it still would have been something and while yes they do kind of resolve the plot of who is arresting all of the animal teachers that's also a plot that plays a big role in the film and even tho there's a good chance that that plot might be done with just yet.
This film is of course a musical films with it's songs being written by the original songwriter for the musical version Stephen Schwartz. With all of the songs in this film being really good with them having a good mixture from the really dramatic songs like "Something Bad" and "Defying Gravity" to having more upbeat ad comedic songs like "What Is This Feeling?" and "Popular" al of which d make sure that there's something in there for everyone with all of this films songs not only being very well written but also really well sung as well as all of this films songs are sung so well by all of the films actors so much so that any one of this films actors barring Jeff Goldblum who really can't sing could very well make it as a singer should any of them really want to give it go with the best singer in the whole film oddly enough no being Ariana Grande who is still a really good singer in this film but she is outshone by Cynthia Erivo who is just pitch perfect in alot of her songs and while yes granted she can't really sing the more comedic songs that well like Ariana can but she can and does sing the films more dramatic songs really well with a good example of this being the films best song which is quite easily "Defying Gravity" and while it was quite hard to pick just one song for the best song in the film what really sold it was that final note at the end song which is something that does make the whole song just so much more better as you know that that moment is coming as the song very slowly builds up to it even working in songs from earlier on in the film as well all to then climax with this big rebellious yell from Elphaba and while the film does have plenty of other good songs in it like "Popular" which is perhaps the best more comedic song in the film it's "Defying Gravity" that people not only will remember coming out of the film but did remember coming out of the film as well.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly two hours and forty one minuets and forty two seconds. Which for any film let alone a musical comedy film is still a really long running time for this film to have but in this films fairness it really does need that large amount of running time inorder to fully tell it's story and to it justice the story that it's trying to tell in the first place with the film even having the right amount of plot there to cover that amount of running time in the first first place and while yes this film doesn't use it's running time all that wisely in one respect it does use it someone what wisely in another as while the films plot isn't as well developed as it really should have been you could very well make the case that that's due to the fact that the film was being split into two and therefor the films plot will be getting more well developed in the sequel something which is somewhat hinted at at the end of this film when Madame Morrible and The Wizard turn everyone apart from Glinda against Elphaba with the same thing also being true for the films character as well as odds are all of the characters character development is going to becoming in the films second part which is something that would make alot of sense as this film and the second film are both telling one big over arching storyline and therefor to have all of the character development in this one film just wouldn't make sense and would do more harm to the second film then good as the characters would be left with no where to go but down and therefor not giving them any kind of character development in this film is something that could make the second even more worth watching then what it already is but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. As while the film doesn't really focus on it's comedy aspect all that much as the film is more of teen romance drama that just so happens to be a fantasy musical film then a straight up comedy when the film does have it's more comedic moments in it they do serve to highlight just how the characters of Elphaba and Glinda are at that certain point in time like for example when Elphaba first meets Glinda the two of them verbally spar with each with each getting in some pretty funny jabs at the other which then end with Glinda asking both ShenShen and Pfannee just what it is that she's done wrong which does feel true to her character however tho the films best joke has to be the entire song of "Popular" as the song just highlights just how vain Glinda is but also how ignorant she is to it all and while "What Is This Feeling?" does also do that whilst also showing the two of them trying to outwit the other in more often then not humorous ways "Popular" just on the whole feels true to the character of Glinda and is a really funny song in the first place and while the film isn't worth watching just for that song alone the song alone is more then enough to make you wonder if this is a comedy or not due to the fact that the it leas very heavily on Ariana Grande's expert comedic timing which is something that really does make this film alot more funnier then what it really had any right to be in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall this film is just so good and i'm so glad to have finally been able to review this film as it is one that really is enjoyable not just for fans of the musical but also for people who just love fun films as well as this is a film that gets so much right and yet gets so little wrong yet you can't help but forgive the film for the things that it gets wrong due to the fact that it's the first part of a two part film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 9 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys an girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from Blogger .
