Fighting With My Family Film Review
Wrestling is a huge love of mine so much so that I do try and follow along with the current WWE product. Heck there's even plenty of big named stars who not only made there name in WWE but also out of it as well with one of those stars being Saraya Bevis who was almost a ten year wrestling veteran before she joined WWE at the age of nineteen with her main roster debut happening when she was around twenty three years old when she was officially a ten year wrestling veteran and yet with all of that going for the film that i'm going to be talking about today had a lot to cover in her life and so then join me as I review the film that has quite alot of historical inaccuracies that movie lovers won't notice but wrestling fans sur will with the film in question being called simply just "Fighting With My Family" enjoy.
The plot of the film is when a young wrestler named Saraya "Paige" Bevis gets a shot to make it big in the worlds biggest wrestling company she has to do whatever it takes to make her lifelong dream come true. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good with the film doing a decent enough job of telling her story in a way that the mainstream audience will know who she is with the plot of this film being one that does do a very good job of knowing when it needs to be dramatic and make you are for the family and when it needs to be comedic with the only thing that lets the film from a plot point of view being the side plot with her brother Zack who finds out that even tho he himself is a good wrestler isn't good enough for the WWE as it's that plot line that whilst it does tie into the main plot of the film it's also one that isn't really needed as the main people who are going to be seeing this film aren't seeing the film for his story rather it's wrestling fans who are going to be seeing the film for Paige's story and while the film does rightfully give her story alot of focus her story still feels incomplete as it's still being written in real life and therefor this films plot does in it's own way feel incomplete as well as Paige does go on to have many more drama filled moments outside of when this film takes place with the plot of this film being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Florence Pugh as Saraya "Paige" Bevis , and Lena Headey as Julia "Sweet Saraya Knight" Hamer. Also starring in this film is Nick Frost as Patrick "Rowdy Ricky Knight" Bevis , Jack Lowden as Zak "Zodiac Knight" Bevis , one of this films executive producers Dwayne Johnson as Himself , James Burrows as Roy Knight , Hannah Rae as Courtney , Vince Vaughn as Hutch Morgan , Thea Trinidad as April Jeanette "AJ Lee" Mendez , Kim Matula as Jeri-Lynn , Aqueela Zoll as Kirsten , Ellie Gonsalves as Maddison , Elroy Powell as Union Jack , Jack Gouldbourne as Calum , this films writer and director Stephen Merchant as Hugh and Julia Davis as Daphne.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With alot of this films actors turning in some really good performances which if your from the UK or if you know these actors from other projects like Game Of Thrones for example then this wouldn't surprise you but alot of this films actors where when this film was coming out either unknown actors in America or in the case of Nick Frost very little known and therefor it is still shocking to see them turn in a good performance as by all rights this films acting should have been really bad but you can tell right from the get go that this films writer and director Stephen Merchant really does know how to get a good performance out of his actors with it being made clear that he is the kind of director who does talk to his actors and actually gives them direction with the best actor in the whole film being Florence Pugh with her really nailing what the real life Paige might have been feeling during this time in her life and while she doesn't quite match up to Paige interms of height she really does capture the spirit of her perfectly and while something like Black Widow might make her look like a really bad actor this film does go to show that given the right script and director Florence Pugh really can nail a good performance down perfectly with the acting that's in this film really being helped by he fact that the script for this film is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Character wise this film odes fall a little bit short with this being something that really can't be helped all that much. As this film is based on someone's actual life story and therefor the characters aren't going to be that interesting alot of the time as we are only with these characters for a small amount of time but with that being said tho there could gave been at the very least some attempt to make even the side characters stand out al little bit more as all of the girls that Paige trains with all look the same and have nothing that makes them standout and for alot of the time the people that her family helps to train as wrestlers don't have anything about them that makes them standout as characters either which I guess makes sense as there not meant to be the main characters of the film Paige and her family are and in that regard the makers of this film do make them some really interesting and quirky characters with there love of wrestling being the thing that sets them apart from the rest of the films characters so much so that her father openly calls people names that call him during Wrestlemania which is a funny trait to have with Paige herself being the best character out of all of them as even tho she is seen as being this weirdo due to the fact that she not only loves wrestling but also wrestles with her family and yet when she sees how tough it truly is to make it as a wrestler she does start to question on if it's the right thing for her with the thing that convinces her to go back being the fact that she is weird this kid who loves wrestling something which her big teddy bear of a father does remind her about and convinces her to go back to American and it's something that her brother reminds of her when she calls to say that she's nervous about making her big Raw debut.
When a music biopic has alot of historical inaccuracies people call it out and alot of people do hate those kinds of films for not being true to the story of the person that there making a biopic about and it's something that or years I never truly understood why. That was until seeing this film as there was alot of things that cut out of this film that happened to the real life Paige during her time in the WWE that this film just doesn't cover the chief amongst which being her time in NXT which in this film is basically just there name for the WWE Performance Centre and not the live TV show that it once was with them not even mentioning her time down in Florida Championship Wrestling which fair enough was done to streamline the story for none wrestling fans but when your making a film about a professional wrestler and one that was still wrestling at the time that this film was being made and released then your going to get alot of people who are fans of Paige and who know her story inside and out to this film and there not getting the whole story either and while those things are excusable as the film was trying to streamline it's story what isn't that excusable is the fact that they keep on switching between the then modern Raw and Smackdown sets to the 2014 Raw set more often then not in the same scene which fair enough was done because of the fact that they were piggy backing off of WWE's own production of Raw and so the makers of the film couldn't ask them to go back to using a three year old set just for them but they could have gotten around this by not using the archival footage that quite clearly shows the 2014 set as all that does is cause a massive continuity problem.
Where the film does slightly fall apart is with the character of Zack and his story as while his story does indeed feed into the main plot really well with both characters going through very similar things all throughout the film. His story just isn't as interesting as you know right from the second that he doesn't get picked to go and train with WWE where his story is going and sure enough it goes to those exact same places in the exact same order that you think that it would do and while this could be because of the fact that the real life Zack may or may not have gone through what the film version of him does that doesn't mean that the film has to stick to what happened to him to the letter as they could have done something to make his plot more interesting as while his plot does indeed add a good does of heart and drama to the film it does also feel pointless in the grand scheme of things as well with this being something that could have been fixed if the makers of this film gave his plot alot more thought and effort as they do give Paige's journey in the film alot of thought and effort and yet they don't give her brother's plot line any of it even tho it's clear as day that not only are they very close as brother and sister but that there stories are mirror opposites of each other and therefor it would have been super easy for the makers of this film to give Zack's plot alot more thought and effort but it is possible that they might not have done that just because of the fact that he's not the main character of the film in which case it is understandable as to why his plot wasn't as well thought out as the rest of the films plot really was.
One of the things that makes this film work as well as it does is the fact that it does balance that line between comedy and sports drama really well. With alot of the drama from Paige's side of things coming from how hard she finds adjusting to the training over in America as she's paired with women who can't wrestler which even tho she gets alot of flack for in the film is something that does rightfully call the WWE out on and yet even tho what makes those scenes work was seeing her bond with her fellow trainees and housemates as we get to see her go from being this loner who just wants to fit in with the rest of them to someone who is willing to just be herself and still help out the girls that don't know how to wrestle all that much which is a great way of giving the film heart as it does highlight something that alot of the women who did know how to wrestler back in 2013 and 2014 might have gone through when they were in NXT as WWE didn't hire alot of women of there wrestling ability back then and it could even be argued that this is something that we see Paige deal with in England as well as we see her try to win her brother over when she tells him that she's quitting WWE because of how hard it is but because of of the fact that he's now going through his own issues when the two of them wrestling he does get a little bit violent with her and just storms off after telling their parents that Paige is thinking about WWE and yet even tho the family has just had this massive big blow up at each other when Zack doesn't return to his girlfriends home to be with her and his son the whole family put aside there differences to go and find him thus showing that family is the most important thing in the world to them.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and forty eight minuets and twenty five seconds. Which to be fair to this film is pretty much the exact grand total running time that you'd expect a film like this one to have especially as the person that the film is about is still having there own story being written in real life with this film even having the right amount of plot to cover this amount of running time in the first place and yet tho due to no fault of the makers of this film this film really doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as the plot of the film isn't as fully developed as it really should have been with this being due to the fact that Paige's story is still being written in real life and therefor things can't be that well done in this film as this film is only telling a shockingly small portion of her life story which does mean that things aren't going to be as well developed as they really could have been as it would have been very interesting to see her time in Florida Championship Wrestling or see what she did achieved in NXT but due to what portion of her life story was being told and the fact that Paige wasn't that well known outside of wrestling circles that was never going to be case and so of course this films plot isn't that well developed with this not really effecting the films characters as all of the films characters are about as developed as they were going to be as this is biopic and because of that the films characters are never going to be that well developed in the first place and yet even so the film does make the best of it's characters by giving them alot time to shine and to get as minimal character development as they were ever going to get but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With this film getting alot of praise for it's wit and rightfully so as this film is very witty with it having alot of really funny moments in it all of which make it stand out from alot of other sports films and biopics out there all of which focus more on being drama then being a good and solid comedy and sports drama with this film putting a little bit more focus on being a drama film then a comedy but when this film doe focus on being a comedy that's when we get some really good jokes in this film with the best one being when Zack and Paige meet The Rock for the first time with them asking him all sorts of questions while the only thing he wants to do is just walk from them with them calling him back each and every time with his getting more and more annoyed at them each time that they call him back which is such a simple joke and yet it's because it's a simple joke that it works as well as does with it being something that you could imagine him going through for real but to give the film credit it does know when to stop telling jokes be it with the family or with Paige herself and just be a straight up drama and while the film does lean a little bit to much in being a drama it's not enough that it stops being a comedy as it only happens when it makes sense within the plot of the film to do so and that's really it with this film having alot of really funny jokes in it as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall it's not that hard to see why this film got all of the praise that it got as it really is a really good film with the film even being the best film that WWE Studios has ever made and for good reason as it really is a good film and one that will please both wrestling and none wrestling fans alike in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7.5 out of 10 from me.#
Now 5the as for where I personally got all of the image that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from Wikipedia , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
