Elektra Film Review
When people think of Marvel movies these days they nine times out of ten think of anything from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and that makes sense as that's a really popular franchise. However there were Marvel movies before then that did also get released onto the big screen and while some of them were good like Blade , Blade 2 , Spider-Man , Spider-Man 2 and X-Men sadly tho alot of them were just flat out bad and it's one of those stinkers that i'm going to be talking today and so then join me as i review the film that might technically be Marvel's first ever female lead superhero movie with the film in question being called simply just "Elektra" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when she is tasked with killing an innocent father and his daughter assassin Elektra has to save them from a group called The Hand. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really bad as the films plot is just so generic that it could be the plot to any 2000's action film and it would play out the exact same way with there being nothing that makes this film feel like something that could only be the plot of an Elektra film with this not really being helped by the fact that alot of the creative team that worked on this film really haven't made anything good at all with this films plot being one that does feel undercooked as it very easily could have worked as the plot for a feature film if the makers of this film even bothered to focus on it's plot and make it a strong enough plot in the first place but because they didn't as they clearly thought that having the film be a spin off of the 2003 Daredevil film would be more then enough to get people to watch the film with the films plot not being as strong as it perhaps could have been as alot of the time it does feel like that the characters are just doing these random things for no apparent reason due to the fact that the film does drop it's main plot for large portions of the films running tim all of which does make it hard to tell just what the main plot of the film is even meant to be alot of the time with the plot of the film not even being really rather entertaining and nor is it really rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Jennifer Garner as Elektra Natchios , Terence Stamp as Stick and Kirsten Prout as Abby Miller. Also starring in this film is Goran Višnjić as Mark Miller , Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Master Roshi , Will Yun Lee as Kirigi , Chris Ackerman as Tattoo , Edson T. Ribeiro as Kinkou , Natassia Malthe as Typhoid , Bob Sapp as Stone , Colin Cunningham as McCabe and Hiro Kanagawa as Meizumi.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not as bad as it really could have been. As by all rights this films acting should have been really bad and while yes this films acting is still pretty bad you can tell that the films actors are at the very least trying to turn in a good performance and are trying to make this films lack of a script work well enough for them with this being something that you can see right from when the film starts up and yet all of the films actors just feel lost and unsure of themselves with this being due to the fact that this films director Rob Bowman only directed four feature films with this one being his last one and it tells right away that he didn't give any of his actors any direction that's not to say that the actors are blameless in this because there really not as actors like Kirsten Prout and Goran Višnjić turn in what can best be described as being very wooden performances with the films best actor also being it's leading actor in Jennifer Garner and even then that's more due to the fact that she's reprising her role from the 2003 Daredevil film and would therefor know how best to perform as that respective character and did such a good job in both films that she was brought back to play the character yet again in Deadpool & Wolverine with the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is Rhythm & Hues Studios , Rainmaker Digital Pictures , Pixel Magic , Modern VideoFilm , Pacific Title and Art Studio and Rainmaker Animation & Visual Effects. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty i in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really bad even taking into account just wen this film was made and what technology that the makers of this film would have had available to them at the time this films effects really haven't aged all that well with alot of them looking even worse today then what they did back in 2005 with this film being very effects heavy there really should have been more money thrown at the film effects department then what there was as they clearly didn't have enough money to make this films effects as good as they really could have been with this being all the more upsetting when you take into account that alot of the effects that have worked on this film worked on much more better films and therefor we know that they can turn in some really decent effects with all of the effects in the film just looking super fake and like they needed more time to be rendered then what they got with there being alot and I really do mean alot of of awful projection shots even very early on in the film which even right there and then let you know right away the type of quality effects that your going to be getting in this film as all of this films effects looked really bad even in 2005.
For the shockingly few of you that don't really know this film is of course meant to be a spin off of the 2003 film Daredevil. However the film makes next to no references to that film with the only reference to the film coming at the very start of this film where it's mentioned in the opening narration that Elektra once died which of course she was in that film but because this film needs to happen they then say that someone brought her back to life and that's it as while Ben Affleck did indeed film a cameo as Matt Murdock it's not in the final cut of the film which makes it pointless to make this a Daredevil spin off film as you very easily could have made this film either a prequel or an indirect sequel to that film and nothing would need to be changed in regards to the plot of this film and heck making it prequel film would actually be a pretty cool thing to see as we'd get to see just how Elektra got to be the kind of character that she was in Daredevil whereas if you did make this film an indirect sequel with possibly Daredevil in more of a supporting role then it would have done a good job of letting us know just where there relationship now stands after the events of that film without having Matt having to fully suit up and yet the makers of this film went the spin off route instead which is something that really doesn't work for this film as while yes the Elektra character was the most popular character from that film the film itself didn't really leave it open for her to return due to the fact that she was killed off and even so the makers of this film don't really take full advantage of that fact by having play into her character in this film infact she barely even mentions it when it is something that really could have shown how far her character has grown inbetween films.
This film does seem to commit the biggest sin that alot of really bad female centric superhero films commit. With that being the fact that they don't make the main character interesting and while someone like DC really doesn't have an excuse as they'd made two of them by the time this film had came out those being Supergirl (1984) and Catwoman (2004) with Marvel on the other hand it's a different story as there s a very good chance that this film was the first female lead superhero film that they had produced but even so they still made Elektra out to be this really dull and boring character with her not really having much in the way of a personality infact she barely raises a smile in the whole film with her only smiling once during a bonding scene with Abby and that's it with this universes version of the character being made out to be this perfect character that has no flaws to her and while that might sound great in a pitch meeting in reality all it does is make her a boring character as then you have nowhere to go with her character but down and yet if you give the character flaws like for example you show that Elektra could get hot headed at times and you could then show how that sometimes gets her in trouble with her having to use her wits to get herself out of danger and show learning from that expirences that would at least show that there was an attempt made to make this interesting character but where as with Elektra who wasn't this annoying and bland character Abby and her father on the other hand are exactly that as they both just annoying and bland characters with Mark being nothing more then a love interest for Elektra and Abby being the stereotypical kid character who's only there to try and bring in a kid audience and that's really it as both characters are just that bland and uninteresting.
Villain wise this films villains are OK but there's really nothing special about them which does make sense as Marvel films aren't really known for having great villains in them barring both Loki and Thanos. However even with that in mind this films villains The Hand could have been done a little bit better then what they were in the film as here there are presented as a yakuza style assassin organization which does sound cool and interesting but the film does nothing with that idea instead only focusing on a small group of them who are trying to attack Elektra and her friends to win favor with the organizations main boos and that's really it and heck they don't really have much of a plan either with it seeming like that there just attacking these people for no reason whatsoever which yes granted does go with the whole yakuza type of vibe that the makers of this films was quite clearly going for with this group but at the same time it makes them so dull to watch with none of the main villains having anything interesting about them as they all look and act the exact same as each other and so they all just blend into together which is something that does make it hard to tell just who is who and while Marvel would indeed get better at making villains for there films by learning what they did wrong with films like this one it does make it sting a little less knowing that due to how bad the villains are in this film we end up getting better villains down the line but they wouldn't have had to have learnt that lesson if the makers of this film even sent half as much time as they do focusing on either the Elektra and Abby relationship or the relationship between Elektra and Mark and instead chose to give the villains some of their focus as that would made them alot more well rounded as character and it would have given us the audience a reason to actually care for them as characters.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and forty minuets and thirty seconds. With this film lasting the right amount of time that you'd expect this film to have as this is a film that really doesn't need to be that long in order to get it's story across in away that does justice to what little plot that it has to begin with with the film having just about the right amount of plot there to really cover that amount of running time in the first place however tho this is a film that really doesn't use it's running time all that wisely tho as the plot of the film isn't that well developed this is despite the fact that the film has plenty of chances to develop it's plot and yet the makers of this film thought that instead of doing that they'd instead focus more on Elektra's backstory which adds nothing to this films plot and is purely there for filler scenes as it takes up screen time what really would have been better suited in developing the films plot with even the films characters not being developed all that well with none none of this films characters getting any kind of character development whatsoever with us knowing as much about quite literally any of this films characters coming out of the film then we did coming into the film and heck even Elektra the films title character gets none when she is the character that should have gotten the most character development while it could be argued that she got her character development in Daredevil it doesn't change the fact that none of the other characters got any kind of character development but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. As while yes the editing in this films action is atrocious at best with the film making a cut every few seconds it seems which can at times make it hard to tell just what's actually going on in this films action but what little we can see of this films action it does make it very easily the best aspect of the film as that where we get to see just how cool that a character like Elektra could have been in her own film with the films best action scene fittingly enough being the films third act as that's where we get to see Electra taking out all of the films villains in really creative and at times quite gory ways as while we get to see no blood in the film at all we do get see her use her Sai which is always really cool to see with her even having a pretty good fight with main villain Kirigi with that fight being very visually interesting to the fact that he made several white sheets float up in the air and while it will always be cool seeing Elektra doing her thing something which Deadpool & Wolverine proved it still would have been nice to see someone other then Abby help her out like maybe we could get to see Stick in a fight as that would then let us know just how good of a fighter instead of just telling us he's a good fighter and maybe Mark could have done since since Abby is his daughter afterall so it would make sense for his character to want to project in this fight to the death in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall whilst Marvel has yet to ana actually good female led superhero film it is still interesting seeing just how far Marvel has come compared to where they've started with this film being one that might be better that not alot of people know about this film as it is a really forgettable film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 4.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom wiki page , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
