Dumb And Dumber Film Review
It's not uncommon for people to release one maybe two good movies a year if they are lucky however Jim Carrey. Had perhaps the best year that anyone could have had as just in 1994 alone he released three of the best comedies that he could have released as he released this film , The Mask and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective all within the same year and much like those two films this one also became a franchise spawning an animated TV show , a prequel and a sequel and so then join me as I review the film that proved that Jeff Daniels could do comedy with the film in question being called simply just "Dumb And Dumber" enjoy.
The plot of this film when a girl leave a suitcase at an airport her dimwitted limo driver and his equally dimwitted best friend resolve to track her down unaware that the mob is also after the suitcase. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that'd actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty dumb however whilst a movie having a dumb plot might be a bad thing in this case it's something that really does work well in this films favor as the whole film is about being dumb and how these two dumb characters just stumble around from one misadventure to the next there it does make sense that the films plot be just as dumb as the films two main characters are and while there plot in the film is suitably dumb the mob plot is one that's treated rather seriously which again is something that does make sense as it shows just how dumb that the films main characters could be in all of the best ways possible and while yes this films plot isn't the strongest plot out there it is one that does work well enough for this film as it is the kind of plot that you'd expect to find these characters in but in saying that this is a plot that really could have been alot more better as it needed that emotional hook to it instead of just having these characters to this thing because it's the right thing to do as nobody would drive across country to give back a briefcase to a stranger and yet if the film had an emotional hook to it then it is something that could have helped the plot of the film be all the more then what it already is with the plot of this film being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Jim Carrey as Lloyd Christmas , Jeff Daniels as Harry Dunne and Lauren Holly as Mary Swanson. Also starring in this film is Karen Duffy as J.P. Shay , Mike Starr as Joe Mentalino , Charles Rocket as Nicholas Andre , Teri Garr as Helen Swanson , Felton Perry as Detective Dale , Harland Williams as The Motorcycle Police Officer , Victoria Rowell as Beth Jordan and Cam Neely as Sea Bass.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With being made clear as day right from the second that step on screen together that both Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels have some wonderful chemistry together with it being really believable that these two people are best friends with the pair of them turning in some really good performances in the film with Jim brining his typically great comic timing and Jeff Daniels showing that he could be more then just a dramatic actor by matching Jim's comic timing beat for beat with it being hard to say just who the best actor in this film is as really it could be either Jim or Jeff as they are both just so good in this film from a comedic point of view but if push does come to shove then it would have to be Jeff Daniels who is this films best actor as while both he and Jim are great in the films more comedic moments Jim Carrey isn't as good when it comes to the films more dramatic moments and that's where Jeff Daniels really does shine the best as he really got that out of the two of them Harry is the slightly more mature and smarter one of the duo and he therefor can have those more dramatic moments as well as having the films more comedic moments as well and that is something that really does show all through out in the film with the acting that's in this film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
The characters much like this film are dumb but enjoyably so with this being something that does oddly work in the films favor. As the films main characters are meant to be these dumb characters characters that are just blissfully unaware of things going on around them and yet they are both so much more then that as they both have alot of heart with them both willing to do the right thing and with them both willing to help the other out even if they don't know that there doing it however Harry and Lloyd are dumb for all of the right reasons whereas alot of this films characters are dumb for all of the wrong reasons with the characters of Joe Mentalino and J.P. Shay being constantly outwitted by the duo and yet there meant to be the smarter ones in the film with the rest pf this films smarter characters feeling undercooked because of the fact that there being the victims to Harry and Lloyds antics when it would have made more sense for them to just miss out on Harry and Lloyd alot of the time with it being really hard to judge alot of the things in this film as the things that are meant to be dumb could be argued as being the point of the film which is to just be nothing more then a dumb comedy movie and that's really it with the films characters being perhaps the best example of this as while yes the smart characters are meant to be smart they can't be to smart as it then makes the comedy not work all that much and Harry and Lloyd can't be that smart either as that would go against there very nature as characters but in saying that tho the character of Mary Swanson just comes across as being a heartless character as she willingly leads both Harry and Lloyd on and doesn't tell them that she's married and yet due to how kind that Harry and Lloyd are they buy into it with this making Mary seem more like a villain then what Nicholas Andre is in the first place.
As was stated at the very start of this review this film came out in the exact same year as both The Mask and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective did. With all three films becoming huge hits at the box office and all three films being three of the most well known films that Jim Carrey has ever made which does make 1994 the best year that he's ever had career wise and while yes he would eventually release better films in the future like the Sonic movies and like The Truman Show for example none of those films have had the lasting impact that Ace Venture , The Mask and this film had as they all broke into pop culture and they all made Jim Carrey one of the biggest stars in the world as they all have two things in common they all showcase just how funny that Jim Carrey can be as well as how good of an actor that he could be as well as alot of those films have really dramatic moments in them and they all work because of how good of an actor that Jim Carrey really is and while yes he would release a few bad films in the mid two thousands but all that does is remind you of just how good that he could be when he picks a really good film to be in with this film being a good example of that as while he's not that good at the films more dramatic moments which do come off as being a little goofy for his character but when the film gets to it's comedic moments that he really is allowed to go nuts and be that rubber faced funny man that we all know that he can be with that being the other thing that both Ace Ventura and The Mask have in common as they both allow him to just go nuts with his characters and be this wild funny man that knows how to get a laugh out of people.
Part of what makes this film work as well as it does is the fact that we don't really get to know all that much about the main characters. Something which the prequel Dumb And Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd got rid of as we don't need to know how these two characters became friends we just need to to know that they are friends and that's really it as there pretty much kids who just met each other five minuets ago and suddenly there best friends as that's how innocent that they are as characters with really the only characters that we needed to know more about being both Mary and Nicholas and that's really it and even then we didn't need to know that much about them as there basically side characters and that's really it but even so the makers of this film really should have done something anything to make those characters standout just as much as the films main characters do as the side characters are just forgettable characters with not alot to them but when the film does give them something like Mary reuniting with husband after he was kidnapped by Nicholas at somepoint prior to the events of the film starting up and that's really it and that was great as that was a sweet little moment that does show that she really does care about someone as even tho she did lead our main characters on she was doing so without realizing that she was doing it and when she told them both that she was married the boys did the right thing and let her be with husband thus proving that the boys are good hearted people and that Mary really does love her husband as well something which does get a little bit lost in the rest of the film as she's not really in the film for that long before the third act starts up.
Speaking of Mary out of the two boys she did have better chemistry with Harry then with Lloyd as while both of them did truly love her it was only Harry that she got to spend alot more time with. This is despite the fact that both boys do make her laugh alot when there with her just by being themselves and even tho neither romance does go anywhere it does show that when they are called upon to do so the boys can be quite sweet and charming even if there little short up top and while this film isn't a romance film persay it is one that very easily could have been one just by having Mary send alot more time with Harry or Lloyd as that would then allow for the romance between them to happen more naturally and yet it's the fact that the film doesn't do any of this that makes it stand out all the more as the key theme behind this film is friendship and what people are willing to do to keep there's alive and well and therefor having a romance plot would get in the way of that despite the fact that it would be fun to see just how these two characters would handle being in a relationship with someone who is ten times smarter then what they are but with the films theme being all about friendship something that we do get to see all throughout the film with even the boys friendship being tested at several points in the film with it even getting to the point where Harry just starts walking home because of the fact that he and Lloyd have no money to get home any other way due to the fact that Lloyd spent what little money that they had left on a bike that breaks down not long after they get it with this being the tip of the iceberg for Harry and with Lloyd that moment comes when he finds out that Harry is going on a date with Mary and sets to sabotage it.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and fifty two minuets and fifty seconds. Which granted is a tad bit on the long side for a comedy film with this film even starting to feel strain of it's wafter thin plot being stretched to the maximum with this being due to the fact that this is film really doesn't have alot of plot there to really cover that amount of running time in the first place with the film only really having enough plot to cover one hour and thirty minuets at maximum as you very easily could have cut out a good chunk of the stuff with them travelling to Aspin and not miss anything that's actually important to this film plot with this film not even using it's running time all that wisely in one respect as the plot of this film isn't that well developed with the plot really being secondary to the films jokes which granted could be seen as being the point of the film but at the same time tho tho you still need a good plot as that's just basic film making 101 but to this films credit whilst it's characters aren't that well developed either you get the impression that there not really meant to be as we the audience are only with these characters for a little while and therefor we're not going to get that much development from them and with the case and Harry and Lloyd you could make the argument that the less we know about them the more funnier that they become as now they could be any member of us the audience and because of the fact that we don't get to spend alot of time with either Mary or Nicholas there not meant to be that well developed either as we're only seeing them for a small portion of there characters lives and that's really it but in saying this tho it would have been nice if the films side characters did get some character development as while it makes sense not to give Harry and Lloyd any character development it doesn't make sense not to give any of the films side characters any character development but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I have t actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that' actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With this film having alot of painfully jokes in it all of which make the film worth watching as they all go to show just how good that Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are as a comedic duo and how funny that both Harry and Lloyd are as characters so much so that it makes you wonder why Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels didn't make more comedies together as they could get a laugh out of anyone and make even the lamest joke seem funny and while many will state that the toilet scene is the best joke in the whole entire for me the best joke in the whole entire film is when Harry gets his tongue stuck on cable car when in Aspin and he just spends the entire date with Mary attached to that cable car constantly going up and down the mountain with it being such a simple joke as it is something that a kid would do and those are the jokes that do shine the best in this film as while the toilet scene is indeed very funny and Jeff Daniels is very funny in that scene it's one that goes on a bit longer then it really needed to and thus becomes unfunny where as with the tongue scene it only lasts a about a minuet or two with the film milking it for as many jokes as they possibly could have done and while Jim Carrey does get some good jokes as well like with Lloyd falling out of the terminal gate at the start of the film Harry's tongue joke is one that's a bit more similar and appeals to the kid in us all in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall this is a film that really is a must watch for comedy fans as it gives you all of the things that you want in a good film with good healthy dose of quality jokes thrown in for good measure alot of which are still referenced to this very day as that's just how good that this film really is in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad thigs that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
