Dante's Peak Film Review
When you think of actors starring in movies together you don't usually think of Peirce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton. As even in the nineties both of them were pretty big franchise stars with Brosnan just coming off Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies and Hamilton still riding the success that she found in T2: Judgement Day and therefor the very thought of seeing he pair of them in a movie together just seemed to out there to be true and yet that's exactly what we got with the movie that i'm going to be talking to you all about today and so then join me as I review the film that sees James Bond team up with Sarah Connor to fight a volcano with the film in question being called simply just "Dante's Peak" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when a volcanologist comes to the small town of Dante's Peak to take some readings he discovers that the town might be in danger from something happening in the mountains. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I im all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that' actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad however this films plot really isn't all that good as it's just a bland a generic disaster movie plot with nothing new added to it with this being the same thing for alot of disaster movies that came out around the same time as this film as they all had a very basic premise and were all usually very light on plot with this film being a prime example of that as while the premise is good enough to carry an entire movie it's the main plot that's not the strongest of plots out there as this feels like the plot of a forty five minuet TV special and not something that you'd go to the cinema to see and while the plot of this film does get alot of focus there's not much thought put into it and while this can work to the films advantage as by all rights this should be a dumb movie as it's premise is dumb enough to pull it off it's the fact that everything is played straight that makes this plot seem even more worse then what it is as this is a plot that should be played up for how dumb it is and shouldn't be played straight as all that does is make the plot of this film even more dumb then what it already is in the first place with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Pierce Brosnan as Harry Dalton , Linda Hamilton as Rachel Wando and Charles Hallahan as Paul Dreyfus. Also starring in this film is Grant Heslov as Greg , Kirk Trutner as Terry , Elizabeth Hoffman as Ruth , Jeremy Foley as Graham Wando , Jamie Renée Smith as Lauren Wando , Arabella Field as Nancy , Tzi Ma as Stan , Lee Garlington as Dr. Jane Fox , Bill Bolender as Sheriff Turner , Peter Jason as Norman Gates , Hansford Rowe as Warren Cluster , Walker Brandt as Marianne and Christopher Murray as A Helicopter Pilot.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I inn all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. With Pierce Brosnan quite clearly trying to turn in a good performance in this film yet at the same time he feels like that he's the only one that's actually trying in this film as Linda Hamilton as good as an actor as she is in this film she just feels like she's just phoning in her performance and barely even trying alot of the time and while the actors that re playing her kids are passable there still just kids and so at times they do come across as being more annoying then anything else with the rest of this films actors just kind of being there as none of them add anything to there characters with all of them not really being given the time that they needed to fully show of just what it is that they can do as actors with it being clear as day that the best actor in this film is none other then Pierce Brosnan as he's the only one that's actually trying in this film with that being something that does come across really well in each and every scene that he's in and it makes his scenes all the more watchable as while yes we really do get the exact same performance that he did in both Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies he has the charm and charisma needed to pull it of with the acting that's in this very film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there respective characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is CIS Hollywood , the legends and the greats that are currently over at Digital Domain and Stargate Studios. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad as even tho this film was made in the mid nineties there was still some really impressive looking GI effects in this film with it being made clear as day that the makers of this film cared more about the films effects then they did about quite literally anything else n this film as even tho having good looking effects in a film is a good thing in an effects heavy film such as this one it won't matter if the films plot and acting isn't that good as the whole idea of CGI is to be invisible and while that is the case here it is something does also highlight just how bad the films acting really is and while the film does use mainly use CGI for alot of the background replacements this is a film where they could have used more CGI when it came to creating the films lava as while they would have most likely have used CGI to create the lava in the first place it oddly doesn't like they enough with this being more like a budgetary reason rather then a storyline reason as by all rights the mountain should have been covered with lava and yet we only get to see small bits of it here and there when the plot demands that we see it where as it would have made more sense for the lava to be shown alot more with the effects on the lava that we do see are looking really good even for the time in which this film was made in.
If the premise of this film sounded familiar to some it's because there was another volcano based disaster film that was also released in 19997 with that one called Volcano. With this film beating it to release by just a few short months and therefor got the much more better box office as a result of that but this is something that does make you wonder why Hollywood didn't bother checking on what the other studios were making as the only thing that sets this film apart from Volcano is the city that gets attacked by a volcano and that's it and while having LA be the main city to get attacked in Volcano is great for spectacle there's not really much that you can within that large city setting where as here with this film due to the fact that it's set in a small mountain town you can do a lot more as the characters can now be put in more peril and the scraps that the get into when the volcano does indeed erupt can be more closer and because of that the film can be more thrilling to watch but at the same time seeing a big known city get covered in lava is of course going to get alot of people to watch the movie however it didn't work in this case because of the fact that they already saw Volcano just a few months earlier when this film came out as that's just how strikingly similar that both films plots really are with it being clear that the main star of both films will never be the actors it will always be the effects as nobody cares that Tommy Lee Jones starred in a disaster movie but what they will care about is the city of LA being covered by lava and that's really it and it's the same thing that's also true for this film as well as nobody is going to care that Peirce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton did a movie together but what they will care about is seeing them almost get killed by lava and that's really it.
For some quite frankly odd reason the makers of this film chose to make both the characters of Harry and Rachel each other's love interests. Which is just something that doesn't work as while Pierce can have chemistry with a blank of wood the same thing cannot be said for Linda Hamilton and that's fine as not every female actor needs to have a love interest but when they do give her a lover interest it usually results in gold with it not working here because of the fact that this is a film that really doesn't require them to be each other's love interest with it even being something that really does come out of of nowhere and only shows up in a few scenes near the start of the film before totally disappearing for the rest of the film until the films climax and because of that it just makes that whole aspect of the film feel tacked on as there's no effort to make it connect to anything else in the film infact you could remove that entire aspect of the film and the film would still work as it is but for whatever the makers of this film thought that they really needed to be each others love interest and because of that we end up with a romance that is not only not needed but is also pointless and not that well developed either as the film doesn't give the characters any scenes alone together before the volcano starts to erupt at which point it's far to little to late when if the film rally wanted us the audience to believe in their romance then they should have had the characters spend some time alone together as that would then have allowed there romance the chance that it needed to be well developed and well more thought out then what it ended up being.
To give this film some credit it really does know why alot of people are coming to see this film in the first place. As when the volcano action starts it doesn't let up with us getting the chance to not only see the action from Harry and Rachel's point of view but also the point of view of Harry's team of experts as well and with a few quick glimpses from the townsfolks as well which is a good as it does give us the chance to see how various people would act in this same situation however there one major downside to this tho and that's the fact that we only two very minor characters at best die in the film with one of them being a member of Harry team of experts and the other one being rachel's mother in law Ruth and that's it as we don't get to see any of the townsfolk die and none of the main characters die either with this being something that does oddly enough make the film alot less tense to watch as we know that the main characters are going to make it out of the film due to who's playing them and therefor we don't get the chance to feel scared or tense for them when they are a life or death situation where as if the film had killed of some major minor characters it would have gone a long way into making us the audience now think that the main characters could now die the best example of this working well is in Scream 2022 as while Dewey wasn't that major of a character he was still a main character in the film who had survived four other killing sprees and therefor when he did get killed off in that film it then opened the door for all of the characters to die something which should have happened in this film and given the fact that there trying to outrun a volcano it is something that could have happened really easily but for whatever reason the makers of this film just wanted to be lazy and therefor we were robbed of any possible tension that we could have had with this film.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and forty eight minuets and twenty eight seconds. With this film having a perfectly solid running time for the type of film that it is as by all rights this is film that really doesn't require that long of a running time to tell it's story in the first as all it needs is more then enough time to get across what the basic premise of the film and that's really it as the rest of the films running time is spent on having the characters trying to escape the erupting volcano with this film having not enough plot there to cover that amount of running time as this film as was previously stated only has enough plot for about forty five minuets at best however tho this is something that could have been fixed just by developing the plot of this film however tho this film doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as it doesn't develop it's plot with the film instead choosing to bad out it's running time by having pointless scenes of Harry and his team testing to see if the volcano is going to erupt or not even tho all of the evidence around them says yes with us then getting more pointless filler scenes with countless town meeting scenes that not only go nowhere but also add nothing to the overall plot of the film with this film not even developing it's characters as while the film does start something with Harry trying to get over hs wife who was killed when another volcano erupted that doesn't effect his character in this film an the film very quicky drops that aspect of his character all for no good reason but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action hat's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was n all honesty really good. With this film having some really good action in it with this being something that does make alot of sense given the fact that the film spends alot more time on it's action then it does quite literally anything else in the film with the entire third act and the last bits of the second act just being one long scene with this action scene also being the best action scene in the film just due t the fact that we get to see alot of really good effects in that part of the film ranging from CGI to practical all of which are blended together really well with the thing that does let this films action down being the fact that we don't really have a sense of tension as we know that all of the main characters are going to be making it out of the film alive and well and therefor it doesn't matter how well down that the action is because us the audience don't really get the chance to feel anything for the films characters this is despite the fact that the action during the films third act is not only really well done but also really creative as well and while it would have been impossible for the film to have more action scenes in it it would have helped the film to stop feeling dull and boring if there were some quick action scenes in it just to make the film a bit more exciting to watch in my freaking opinion anyways / at least.
Overall while it is very easy to see why this film got as many negative reviews as it did get when it first came out this is a film that really could also be considered so bad that it's good as while yes this film really is a bad film there's no doubt about that its the things that make it bad that also make it hugely entertaining to watch as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 6 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official James Bond fandom wiki page , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
