The Naked Gun 2025 Film Review
There are some films that when you think of them you straight away think of a certain star with the original The Naked Gun being one of them. As even tho that film and it's sequels are all based off of the not so popular but still really good TV show Police Squad the second that someone mentions that movie you right away think of Leslie Nielsen as he was just so good in both the show and films that it would foolish to do another one of these movies without him as he made the character of Frank Drebin as memorable as he was and so then join me as I review the film that tries to recapture the spirit of the original whilst also being a legacy sequel to Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult with the film in question being called simply just "The Naked Gun" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. is tasked with finding out how someone got into a fetal car accident and left no tire marks he discovers a world ending plot that only he can foil. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in al honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that'd actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. However tho this films plot isn't all that good as it tries to be the typical Naked Gun plot however it oddly plays it safe when it comes to the plot of the film as the one thing that the plot of the original film had going for it was the fat that you had no idea where it was going whereas here tho you know where the plot of the film is going and sure enough it hits all of those same plot beats in the exact same order that you think that they would do with the plot of the film not being as over the top enough as a property like this one really should do and because of that it does feel like the makers of this film are playing it safe when it does come to the plot of this film when they should be going to those over the top and fun places as that's what a plot for a Naked Gun movie should be even in the original show the plot to alot of the episode were yes serious but they were so serious that they became over the top because of it with t feeling like that the makers of this film where baking on both the IP name and the fact that they got Liam Neeson starring in it to get to people to like it and because of that they didn't bother to give us that good a plot in the first place and while yes this films plot does have it's moments as there is a good plot in this movie just waiting to begging to come for one reason or another it just can't be as good as it so desperately wants to be with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and ass well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Liam Neeson as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. , Pamela Anderson as Beth Davenport and Paul Walter Hauser as Capt. Ed Hocken Jr.. Also starring in this film is Kevin Durand as Sig Gustafson , Danny Huston as Richard Cane , Liza Koshy as Detective Barnes , Pro Wrestler Cody Rhodes as The Bartender , CCH Pounder as Chief Davis , Busta Rhymes as A Bank Robber , Eddy Yu as Detective Park and Moses Jones as Nordberg Jr..
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. With this film rightfully being praised for it's acting as that is one of the more better elements of the film with alot of this films actors really trying to turn in a good performance and if there playing a son of a character for the original three films then there also trying to add in elements of what the original actor brought to the role as well with that working really well for these characters with alot of the praise going towards both Liam Neeson and Pamala Anderson both of whom not only acct well when opposite each other but also have some fairly solid chemistry with each other and while Neeson will never ever be able to top what Leslie Nielsen did in the role of Frank the fact that the makers of this film took pretty much the same approach that the makers of the original show by casting mostly dramatic actors in these comedic roles does show that the makers of this film are at the least trying to recapture some of the magic that the original films had in spades with the best actor in this film being Liam Neeson as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. as even tho it makes no sense for this character to be as old as he is when he was born in the nineties Neeson really does make the character work oddly really well enough for him in this film and the fact that he took kind of a similar career path that Leslie Nielson took only instead of going from dramatic acting to comedic acing he went from dramatic acting to acting mostly in action films it really is still something that does work in this film with the acting that's n this film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
While the original show and films were all mostly spoofs of cop shows this film decides to go away with that and tackle mostly spy films and yet they still chose to have the main character be a cop. Which just seems odd as the film prides itself on being the new version of the franchise and yet they do nothing new with either the plot or the characters as the film just has them act the exact same way that you'd expect them to act just based off of who their parents are with even the films plot being not quite sure if it wants to spoof cop movies or spy movies and so it ends up doing both the film having elements of a spy movie and a cop movie all at the exact same time which makes the film feel like a compete mess and while yes the original films did have borrow elements from other genre's it also knew to just be a cop movie and just spoof those as those were what was popular on TV at the time whereas here spy movies are more popular and so it would have made sense for Frank Drebin Jr. to be some sort of master spy think Get Smart but with more deadpan humor in it as that would allow the franchise to be updated and yet also keep it firmly set in this world but for whatever reason the makers of this film stuck so closely to what the original film was that we end up with this rather odd film where it's afraid to do something and new and so it just does the same old thing only worse and while the film does indeed get credit for sticking close to the original film even the co-creator of the franchise David Zucker knew that you had to keep it updated to what was popular as he's quoted as saying in a 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter "they don't make cop movies anymore. When you do parody, you've got to spoof something current." with spy movies being the current in thing right now and yet for some odd reason the maker of this film don't take full advantage of that by spoofing them.
Look to be frank this isn't a bad film as it does try to recapture the spirit and tone of the original film the only issue is is that the original film and cops film in general aren't popular anymore. Therefor it makes no sense for the makers of this film to stick so closely to the original film and while the film does indeed rightfully get alot of credit for sticking to the original almost to the point where it ends up doing more harm to the film then good the makers of this film still should have taken this franchise is a new direction keep Frank as the hero by all means but dare to do something new as today's audience not only A aren't going to know what The Naked Gun is the first place and B aren't going to know that the films were spoofing cop movies therefor it makes no sense to keep Frank Jr. as a cop when not only have the police been getting alot of hate in the past five years are so which is something that could then put alot of people off watching your movie but also because of the fact that the story that the makers of this film are trying to tell makes it more suited to being a spy spoof movie and while yes the original Naked Gun movie also had elements of spy movies in it as well and it could even be argued that the villains scheme in that movie would be more at home in a spy spoof then a cop spoof there it was handled better due to the fact that you had writers who knew how to write good comedy and the actors to make the jokes even more funnier then what they already are whereas in this film none of this films writers can write a decent joke between them and while the films actors are trying to make alot of this films jokes funny they still things that are actually funny things to say and do.
While it's not all doom and gloom for this film film as the film does get alot of things right like for example the fact that this films main villain Richard Cane is a wonderfully over the top villain. With him being this rich billionaire that wants to see the rest of humanity wiped out apart from the wealthy so that they can start over again on Earth which is a wonderfully over the top plan which is perfect for this franchise as it's something that would fit in well with these film and even the character is an over the top character with him just doing all of these things not only because of the fact that he doesn't believe in rules but because of the fact that he can do and that's and to be fair to this film that's all we need for this villain to be as the villains in the original movies aren't the best characters to begin with and therefor having the main villain that's very one dimensional is oddly on brand for these film but if the makers of the film wanted to have a surprise twist then what they could have done is have it be revealed that Pamala Anderson's character Beth Davenport is secretly the villain which would be a slightly funny thing to do as it's Pamala Anderson as the main villain that idea alone is funny and is something that it did look like that the film was going to do but then they don't go through with it with the main villain himself being one that despite him being featured quite alot during the film doesn't get alot of character development and heck we don't even get to see why he's evil which it could be argued is part of the point of the character but at the same time it would have given us the audience even more of a reason to hate him outside of the fact that he's the bad guy and that's really it.
While the original film also had a love story between Frank Drebin and Jane this film has a love story between Frank Drebin Jr. and Beth Davenport with the only real difference between the two being the fact that the romance in this first film was woven better in the main plot of the film then the romance in this film was as here it just come across as the makers of film just added it in at the last second. As it has very little to do with the main plot of the film with the film instead choosing to focus more on there action side of things that it did the romance side of things which is something that does make alot of sense as afterall if you've got Liam Neeson in your movie then you might as well put alot of focus into giving him some really good action scenes in the film and to be fair this film does do that with all of the films action scenes being as wonderfully over the top and borderline campy as you'd want them to be and while there not as over the top as anything that's been done in quite literally any of the Fast & Furious movies it's done enough to make sure that you know that the makers of this film know full well that there making a comedy and are going over the top in a way that's meant to be seen as being comedic and to be fair that's the kind of action that does work well in this film as the true highlight of this film should always be how over the top things get as even the opening credits of the original film went over the top with it's visuals and jokes again so much so that you knew full well that the makers of this film knew that they were making something that's not to be taken seriously and while there isn't a true standout action at least not one that's not spoiler heavy that's kind of the point as this is meant to be a fun comedy with the makers of this film putting alot more effort into it's comedy aspect then any other aspect of the film.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and fourteen minuets and six seconds. Which even for a comedy is such a amount of running time for a film even more so when you take into account that the previous films all lasted somewhere around one hour and thirty minuets with this film having more then enough plot there to cover that amount of running time and even longer then that as all the makers of the film would have to do is just develop the plot of the film alot more and that's really it as in it's current form this film really doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as due to the short running time the film really can't develop it's plot all that well as it has so many things to set up that by the time it's done setting them all up the film is good as well deep into it's first act by which point there's no point in developing the plot all that much because of the fact that the film would be over soon anyway with this even effecting the films characters as none of the films characters have nothing all that interesting about them and aren't that well developed in the first place with this even going to Frank Drebin Jr. who despite exactly like his dad is just missing that extra something that made his dad a loveable character in the first place with all of these issues being things that very easily could have been fixed if the film was just fifteen minuets as then both the plot and it's characters would have the time that they both really need as right now they both come across as being really underdeveloped at the best times and unfocused as well with the film not really devoting alot of the time to developing either it's plot or it's characters as well but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally tought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. With this films comedy not really being all that good either as while the film does maintain the series long tradition of having this really dramatic actors saying these really crazy and stupid things the issue is tho is that alot of what there saying isn't all that funny this is despite the fact that the film does also have some solid wordplay jokes in it as well something that the original show did really well with perhaps the best joke in this film also being the most simplest and silliest joke as well as all it is is whenever Frank and Ed enter a new room they always get handed a cup of coffee each even when they already have a full cup each but it doesn't stop there as the film takes this running joke one step further by having one of these exchanges take place in Frank's car mid air in the middle of an action scene which is such a wonderfully silly thing to do with both that joke and alot of this films wordplay jokes feeling the most true to the original films and show as those are the types of the jokes that the original film would tell and do them well this is despite the fact that those kinds of jokes are also done really well with those two jokes proving that the makers of this film really do know how to make a good and funny film this is despite the fact that the film does also have alot of really bad jokes in it as well in this film as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall this film does try to be a really good film as there are alot of good things to be found in this film but for whatever reason those good things just get bogged down by more of the films negative aspects as while the film is rightfully getting alot of praise that doesn't make it perfect film as it really isn't as even alot of the films best jokes are seen in the trailer for the film which is a sure fire sign of bad film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 5.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images hat I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
