Smurfs: The Lost Village Film Review

While alot of people think that only DC Comics and Marvel Comics are the only two major comic book companies releasing movies this month. What they seem to forget is that there is another comic book movie coming out this week one which features characters that have been around for decades and had several movies and TV shows based on them and so then join me as I review the film that sees Smurfette once again take centre stage with the film in question being called simply just "Smurfs: The Lost Village" enjoy.

The plot of this film is when Smurfette sees a new Smurf in the forest she along with Clumsy , Brainy and Hefty set out to warn them about incoming attack from Gargamel. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad as it was something new and different when compared to the previous two films that kept the action mostly in the human world and had boring and predictable plots to them where as here in this film not only is the action kept in the smurfs world but it's a plot that you can't really see coming as it's not a plot that's really been done before now but at the same time tho this films plot is one that does feel a tad all over the place as the film also has a plot with Smurfette just trying to work out what her thing is which doesn't get enough attention and focus with even this films plot not really being that well developed either as it's a plot that could have been so much more better then what it actually was as all of the potential is there in this films plot to be really good but because of the fact that the makers of this film really don't take the time to fully develop it's main plot it is something that does come across as being more of an afterthought and not as fun as it really could have been either with the plot of this film being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Also starring in this film is Joe Manganiello as Hefty Smurf , Jack McBrayer as Clumsy Smurf , Danny Pudi as Brainy Smurf , Ellie Kemper as Smurf Blossom , Michelle Rodriguez as Smurf Storm , Ariel Winter as Smurf Lily , Meghan Trainor as Smurf Melody , Jake Johnson as Grouchy Smurf , Gordon Ramsay as Baker Smurf , Tituss Burgess as Vanity Smurf , Gabriel Iglesias as Jokey Smurf , Jeff Dunham as Farmer Smurf , this films director Kelly Asbury as Nosey Smurf , Alan Mechem as Passerby Smurf , Danik Thomas as Karate Smurf , Patrick Ballin as Patient Smurf and Frank The Caterpillar. , Bret Marnell as Handy Smurf and Snappy Bug , Frank Welker as Azrael , Dee Bradley Baker as Monty , Melissa Sturm as Smurf Jade , Ernest Guillart as Baby Smurf and Julia Roberts as Smurf Willow.

Now then interms if what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. With alot of this films actors turning in some passable performances in this film and while the acting in this film is alot more better then the acting that we got in the previous two live action Smurfs films with Demi Lovato not only carrying on the tradition of casting a singer as Smurfette but also turning a performance that's just as good as Katy Perry's performance as the same character in the previous two films with it being made clear as day that alot of this films actors are quite clearly trying to turn in good performances in this film with them not only knowing that there in a bad film but still having fun with it but also being more then willing to give us these really over the top and zany performances with the best example of this also coming from the films best actor that being Rainn Wilson as Gargamel as he is more then willing to go to those over the top and give the kind of over the top performance that this character truly deserves and because of that his character is the most fun character to watch as you never really know just what kind of performance that your going to be getting from scene to scene with the acting that's in this very film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it s that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does help to lower the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

Doing the animation for this film is of course the legends and the greats that are currently over at Sony Pictures Imageworks. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really goof with this films animation really being alot more better then what it really had any right to be as nobody would have blamed the makers of this film for giving this film so low quality animation but no they actually went above and beyond and made this film look as beautiful as they could have dine given this films sixty million American dollar budget with the animation being this kind of zany and zippy animation that is something that does work really well with all of The Smurfs characters as while it does make the film look more appealing to kids it's also something that fits this franchise beautifully as it allows for the characters to have these more over the top facial reactions and to do these more crazy and over the top things something that just wouldn't work with the previous two films as they were mainly set in the real world where as here because it's all set in the smurf world it means that the characters are now free to be as crazy and as over the top with there facial expressions as they can be with the film even taking advantage of the fact that it's a fantasy film by giving us this nice looking backgrounds which granted aren't that creative as all they are is just different parts of the same forest and that's really it but they do still look nice and they do still add something to this world with even The Smurfs themselves looking really good as while it would have been tempting to give these characters the bean mouth art style treat they actually don't and because of that it does make it very easier to tell just which Smurf is who.

For some reason this film chose to make Smurfette it's main character even tho she was just the main character in the previous film. With even her character arc in this film being the exact same as it was in the last film only here she remains in the smurf world and doesn't get kidnapped and forced into the real world whilst having Smurfette as the main character isn't a bad idea as her very origin story alone can make for a good character arc where she has to learn what it means to be a true blue smurf the issue is tho is that with this film that now makes the second film in a row that not only has her as the main character but also tells the exact same storyline with her character with neither film really doing anything that's all that interesting with her character which makes you wonder why the makers of this film thought that it was a good idea to have her be the main character when there quite literally hundreds of other Smurfs that they could have used and heck even the first live action movie had Clumsy be the main character so why not have someone like Papa or Grouchy take on the role of the main character or heck why not invent a Smurf that could be used as the main character as there hundreds of Smurfs anyway this is something that would be fairly simple to do but for whatever reason the makers of this film went with Smurfette as the main character and also gave a plot line that grated was done better in this film but was also one that we've just just seen done in the second live action Smurfs movie which just makes the makers of this film seem lazy and like there unable to come up with anything new and creative with her character and so they just went back to something that was done before only this time around they do it slightly better and that's really it.

This is the film that introduced an entire village of new female Smurfs and if you thought that the main Smurfs had no personality then you've seen nothing yet. As there is nothing in this new village of Smurfs that makes each of the characters standout from one another as they all just come across as being the same character with nothing new added to there designs heck even the Smurfs in the main smurf village have something about them that makes them standout from one another like Hefty is always working out or Vanity is always looking in his mirror yes there small things but there better then what this film gives it's newer female smurf characters as the only thing that makes them standout from each other is who is voicing them and that's really it and that's fine for the adults as there not going to be that much attention to this film in the first place but alot of the kid audience they will be paying attention to this film and it's characters and they'll be the ones walking away with characters that aren't that well done as all of the new characters just feel like that there added in at the last minuet as not one of them surfs a purpose to the films story with really the only two that do add something to the films story are Smurf Willow and Smurf Storm and that's really and even then those two character are more memorable because of who played them and not due to anything that there characters say or do with this being a really simple thing to fix as all the makers of this film would have to have done is just do one re-write of the films script as then they could have made those characters more memorable instead of leaving it up to the 2021 CGI The Smurfs TV series to help to do something new or even interesting with there characters.

To give this film some credit it does manage to get Gargamel right with the character being just as goofy as he was in the classic animated show. However this time there is a tinge of menace about him as he does do whatever it takes to get to these new Smurfs before Smurfette , Brainy , Clumsy and Hefty do which is something that whist it does feel in character for him to do something like that as it does make him come across more of a recurring threat to The Smurfs it also doesn't work for the more crazy and over the top tone that the film is going for as everything that he does isn't crazy or over the top he's just doing what you'd expect him to do for the exact same reason that you'd expect him to do as well and while that can be seen as a good thing as this character really only has one end goal in mind and that's to get The Smurfs to use there essence to give himself unlimited power only here tho even tho he casts a spell asking his cauldron where this new hidden village is it makes you wonder why didn't he just ask it where Smurf Village is as then he could left Smurfette in the cage and just gone after the rest of The Smurfs himself but with that being said his classic evil scheme is still something that works as this is a character that's not meant to be taken seriously and is meant to be funny and therefor when he does get thwarted every step of the way it doesn't effect him as a character as we know that he's going to be back in a few anyways but it would have helped the film if he did actually win some of the time not a major time but a small victory every now and then would have gone a long way into making him feel like he's an actual threat to these characters.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty minuets and forty six seconds. Which to be fair to this film is pretty much the exact grand total running time that you'd expect an animated Smurfs movie to be with this film really having the right amount of plot there to really cover that amount of running in the first place but at the same time tho this film also really doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as this films plot isn't that well developed not so much that you can't tell what the plot of the film is even meant to be alot of the time but enough that we the audience can tell that the makers of this film didn't really care about the plot of the film as if you question anything that happens about this film from a plot point of view then huge chunks of the films plot just start to crumble in on it's self with alot of the films characters not even being that well developed and even characters like Papa Smurf despite him being a main character in this movie just straight up disappears from the film for so long that you do straight up forget that he was even a character in the film with his character not even being that well developed either as it's not even said why he's trying to get to Smurfette and her friends and while she is meant to be the main character of the film Smurfette herself doesn't get much in the way of character development granted she gets some but not much with even her arc about finding out what her thing is is not only resolved in a lazy way but also adds nothing to her character either but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.

So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. As while this film doesn't really have that many laugh out loud moments in it you can tell that there was an effort by the makers of this film to give this film some genuinely funny moments in it like the fact that Brainy gets eaten by a flower and then struggles to get out of it something that whilst yes it was in alot of the trailers for this film it was still a funny moment with the films animation helping to make the moment more funnier then what it really had right to be as this is where the films more zany and zippy animation style really does come into play and shine through as the animation moves fast enough to help to make the joke even more funnier then what it really had any right to be with that joke even the films best joke as well as you can tell that the makers of the film put alot of effort into making that joke as good as it could have been something that isn't quite true for alot of the films jokes as while Gargamel does get some funny jokes in it the animation doesn't help to sell the jokes and make them better with the same thing also true for Papa Smurf as well who oddly enough gets some jokes in this film as well which don feel out of character for hm as he's not really one for telling the kind of over the top jokes that this film has him say but when this film does tell a solid joke like with it look like that Vanity is talking about Smurfette at the start of the film only for it to be reveled that he's talking about himself is a good joke and one that feels true to his character as well with those being some of the really funniest jokes in this film as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall regardless of how good or bad the new Smurfs movie that's coming out this Friday turns out to be at least one thing really is certain and that's the fact that it won't make as much money as this one did due to two things the first of which being the fact that we've got Superman killing it at the box office and we'll have The Fantastic Four: First Steps also coming out but it's also due to the fact that the new Smurfs film really is hardly being promoted where as you knew that this film was coming out with this film being a really enjoyable film on top of all of that as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exact a 6 out of 10 from me.
