Back To The Future Film Review
This Wednesday actually marks a very special day in film history and it's one that sadly is being overlooked by Universal Pictures. As this Wednesday marks the fortieth anniversary of Back To The Future and as such I thought that now really would be the right time to go back and take a look at this truly classic film to see if it still holds up and is as good as the other two films in this trilogy and so then join me as I review the film that made owning a Delorean car cool with the film in question being called simply just "Back To The Future" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when seventeen year old Marty Mcfly accidentally travels back in time to 1955 he with the film of a younger version of his Doc Brown must find away to make Mary's parents fall in love with each other and get Marty back to the year 1985 before it's far to late. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good with this films plot more then holding up all of these years later as while yes it's a plot about time travel it's also a plot about standing up for your self and what you can do if you put mind to it both of which are not only timeless themes but are also pretty universal themes as well with the film making great use of those themes with the films storytelling overall being really well done as the film will set up things in one scene in act one and then make it a more important piece of information during act two case in point the whole saving the clock tower bit of the film something that we first see mentioned off handedly in an early scene of the film with it being revealed both how the clock stopped ticking and when it stopped but then becomes an important piece of plot information in act two as that's the only way to get Marty back home and the film is filled to the brim with scenes like that which does make this films plot feel alot more well thought out then what it actually is with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly , Christopher Lloyd as Dr. Emmett Brown and Lea Thompson as Lorraine Baines McFly. Also starring in this film is Crispin Glover as George McFly , Thomas F. Wilson as Biff Tannen , Claudia Wells as Jennifer Parker , Marc McClure as Dave McFly , Wendie Jo Sperber as Linda McFly , George DiCenzo as Sam Baines , Frances Lee McCain as Stella Baines , James Tolkan as Mr. Strickland , J.J. Cohen as Skinhead , Casey Siemaszko as 3-D , Billy Zane as Match , Harry Waters, Jr. as Marvin Berry , Donald Fullilove as Goldie Wilson , Lisa Freeman as Babs , Cristen Kauffman as Betty , Elsa Raven as The Clock Tower Lady , Will Hare as Pa Peabody , Ivy Bethune as Ma Peabody , Jason Marin as Sherman Peabody , Katherine Britton as Daughter Peabody , Jason Hervey as Milton Baines , Maia Brewton as Sally Baines and Children Of The Corn star Courtney Gains as Dixon.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty so good. With all of this films actors really nailing there roles so much so that all of them pretty much just are those characters even Crispin Glover who is the only actor to get replaced in the sequels still does do a really good job of playing George McFly in this film this is despite the fact that the actor wasn't the best person to get along with on set he is still a really good actor who does turn in a good performance in this film with even Thomas F. Wilson who is said to be absolutely nothing like Biff off camera still does play him really well and makes for a really good and over the top villain with the best actor in his film being both Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd as both of these actors are just so good in this film that it was hard to pick one true standout actor in this film as they both do have to carry whole portions of the film by themselves with the film really resting on if the audience can believe these two actors and because of the fact that both of them are a pair of really good actors in the first place it means that us the audience would have no problem in believing them as these two characters with both of them being just so good that they have reprised their roles both together and separately several times over the decades and simply just are these characters as that's just how good that these two actors really are in this film with the acting that's in this film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is the legends and the greats that are currently over at Industrial Light & Magic. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good as while we don't get to see alot of CGI in not only this film but also all of the Back To The Future film as well what little CGI we do get to see does look good not only for the time in which was made but also by today's standards as well and while yes granted this films CGI might look a little bit dated to some that's only because of what little technology that there was available to them when this film was being made and is not a reflection on the films quality of the CGI with the makers of the film instead using alot more practical effects then they do CGI effects with the film only using CGI when they have do like when there showing the sparks around the car when Marty first takes it back to 1955 or at the end of the film when we see the car elevate of the ground before then flying towards us both of which are things that would be impossible to do practically and therefor they have to be done in a computer with the films more practical elements not only looking just as good as they did back in the eighties but also holding up really well with this film and Raiders Of The Lost Ark being a good example of how practical effects will always trump CGI effects as no matter how far the technology evolves for CGI effects nothing will be able to top someone doing something for real as that will always look better then anything that's being created inside of a computer.
One of the key elements to making this film work is the friendship between Doc and Marty as the audience really do have to believe that these two characters would be friends. This is something that does thankfully work for the film as both Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox are not only some really likable people but have just such chemistry together that it does help to make it alot more easier to buy into there characters friendship and while granted we don't get to see Marty interact all that much with the 1985 version of Doc he does spend nearly the rest of the film with his younger 1955 self and seeing those characters bond as Doc has to learn to trust that this weird kid is actually from the future whilst Marty has to put his faith in someone that could be considered a stranger does help to make the friendship between the two of them either stringer but at the same time tho it would have been more fun if we got to find out what it was that made there original 1985 selfs become friends with each other in the first place as then when Marty does travel back in time he could have used that as a way to gain Doc's trust instead of just reciting the same story that Doc had told earlier on the film which don't get me wrong does work well enough for the scene that it's in but it also doesn't give Doc a reason to trust Marty all that much where as if Marty had done something that both he and Doc did enjoy doing back in the future only know it's in the fifties then it would have made the friendship between Marty and the 1955 version of Doc Brown feel all the more real and thus the hug that Marty gives that version of Doc would be all the more emotional because of it.
While this film does indeed get quite alot of things right like for example it's use of time travel and showing how Marty's actions in the past affect the future in some way shape or form. The film does however get alot of things like the fact that it doesn't give us a reason to want to see George and Lorraine together outside of the fact that the plot of the film demands it while there is an in built reason for this with George being scared to ask her out that's really it as alot of there scenes together are him struggling to find ways of telling her how he feels about her and her having a crush on Marty and that's it which isn't enough to make us want to care for them as a couple with this being something that could have been fixed if makers of this film just showed a few scenes of them together talking and that's really it which is something that would help to make the film feel all the more better then it already is as these two characters are meant to be the main characters of both this film and by default the second film as well and yet there barely on screen together and while both of the characters on there own do get plenty of time to shine they barely get any screen time together where it's just the two of them which is something that does make it hard for us the audience to buy into them as a couple and while the film does do a solid enough job of making them a believable couple as the whole conclusion to George's arc with him finally standing up to Biff does work as he was assaulting Lorraine nothing up until that point does suggest that they would make for a good couple together which is something that might seem small in the grand scheme of things but given that the whole plot of the film hinges on them becoming a couple there still should have been just as much thought and effort into making them a more believable couple then we got in the films plot.
While Biff Tannen is a hugely entertaining character no one is going to ever deny that but at the same time tho there's no denying the fact that he's also not the best developed character either. As he just comes off as being the stereotypical school bully and really nothing more then that and while that might be the intention of the character that's not good enough since he's meant to be the films main villain and while yes the character can indeed come across as being quite threatening at times there's nothing more to his character other then his height and muscles and heck we don't even get to find out the reason why he bullied George so much either which does make it feel like that he was only picking on him just because he can do which to be fait is a solid enough reason as nine times out of ten bullies especially of Biff's size will bully people just because they can do but there still needed to be more to his character with this being something that Back To The Future Part 2 did try to do by revealing that he not only lives with his Grandma but also comes from a more poor part of town but neither of those tell us who he is as a character and while things like the comic books and video games might go into more detail about his character none of that matters because it wasn't in this movie but at the same time tho it could be argued that we don't really need to know all that much about Biff because he's the school bully which to be fair to this film is more then enough to get us the audience to hate him as he does do some truly evil things in this film including almost running over Marty and assaulting Lorraine amongst other things it's just something that would have helped his character be slightly more memorable then what he already is in the first place.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running tome of exactly one hour and fifty five minuets and forty nine seconds. Which to be fair to this film is a perfectly amount of running time for this film to have and again to this films credit it does have so much to get over like how the rules of time trave work in this film as well things like the plot and the characters amongst many other things with the film even having the right amount of plot there to cover that amount of running time as well but with all of that being said whilst the film does use it's running time wisely when it comes to it's plot as the film does know how to get across important information without feel like that it's bogging down the film ad getting in the way of the actual fun aspects of the film the film doesn't however fully develop it's characters which for someone like Marty does make some sense as he's not meant to be the main character of the film it's his parents but at the same time tho there still should have been some time spent on developing his character and maybe even giving him a small character arc that can work with whatever character development the makers of this film gave him with really the only two characters getting any form of character development in this film being both George and Lorraine as George has to go from someone who is scared of his own shadow basically to someone who is willing to standup to people like Biff and Lorraine is someone who has to go from someone who is always following the trend to instead being someone who finds the love of her life in someone that she wouldn't have thought would make her truly happy and it could even be argue that Doc has a small character arc as well as he has to go from someone afraid to find out about the future to someone who is willing to take a chance on the future instead but that's really it as none of the films other main characters Marty included get nothing like that whatsoever but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With this film having some truly laugh out loud moments in it be it from Marty saying to George that he's Darth Vader from the Planet Vulcan whilst dressed up in a Hazmat suit to anything involving the 1985 Doc there's just alot of really funny moments in this film with nearly all of them working really well as well with the best joke in the whole entire film being the fact that for the early part of the film the 1955 Doc keeps on wondering why Marty is using the word heavy alot of the time which is something that does feel true to his character as he's from a different time period and is a scientist and so of course he would be wondering why this kid from the future is saying this word that to his knowledge no kid from the fifties is saying which is something that does lead to some really funny quips from actor Christopher Lloyd and while that is an example of just how good that the films word play can be when it comes to the films use of character comedy it has to be the square chase scene which is not only really action packed as we get Marty trying to out skate Biff and his gang who are driving Biff's car with all of there facial expressions really selling just how funny this is even right up to the fact when they crash into the manure van which does set up a really funny running joke that goes through all three films and is still a really funny running joke in it's own right in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall while this film managed to spawn an entire franchise including comic books , video games , an animated series and an on going stage musical amongst many other things including film sequels as well nothing will be able to top just how good this film was and still is as this is a film that is just that good and one is a must watch for anyone that is interested in time travel or just in good films in general as this film is just that good of a film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things hat are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly an 8.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the image that I personally used in this very review from the official Back To The Future fandom wiki page , IMP Awards .
