A Minecraft Movie Film Review

The current trend in Hollywood these days seem to boil down to two things the first being adapting every single video game that's popular for longer then five minuets and the second is oddly enough casting Jack Black in it. Well now we have yet another live action video game adaptation that has Jack Black in the lead role and well yeah this movie is just as bland and as generic as you'd think that it is and this is coming from someone who hasn't even played the game that this film is based off of and so then join me as I review the film that tells you right in the title exactly it is with the film in question being called simply just "A Minecraft Movie" enjoy.

The plot of this film is a bunch of misfits from our world find themselves transported into a world that's fueled by creation and have to team up with that worlds only other human occupant to not only find a way but to also stop an evil witch from destroying the world for good. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty just as bland and dull and generic as it sounds as this really could have been the plot to any live action video game movie as for a film that's based on something that's meant to be all about your imagination there's very little actual imagination put into the films plot and while granted the game itself doesn't have much of a plot anyway so the makers of this film couldn't exactly pull the plot of the game and use it as the plot of the movie the stuff that they did come up with is just lame and boring that's not going to please anybody who did play the game and it's not going to please the adults that are seeing this movie the only people that might be pleased are the films target kid audience and that's really it and that's fair enough as the film is geared more towards them but at the same time the kids aren't the ones that are buying the tickets for the movie it's the adults and so there should have been alot more effort into creating a plot that not only has some of the best aspects of the game at it's core but is also fun and actually imaginative in the first place with the plot of this film not really being really rather entertaining and nor is it really rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is one of this films producers Jason Momoa as Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison. Also starring in this film is Jack Black as Steve , Wednesday star Emma Myers as Natalie , Danielle Brooks as Dawn , Sebastian Hansen as Henry , Jennifer Coolidge as Vice Principal Marlene , Rachel House as The Voice Of Malgosha , Jemaine Clement as Daryl and as The Voice Of Bruce and Matt Berry as The Voice Of Nitwit.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I im all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. However tho at the same time tho this films acting just isn't that good either with all of this films actors giving the exact kind of performance that you'd expect them to give and that's really it and heck even Jason Momoa's character is the same type of character that he always plays so he's not playing a new character at all and while both Jack Black and Emma Myers are indeed trying to turn in a good performance even they can't elevate the material that's being given to them to work with as there's just nothing there on the page for any of this films actors to work with with it being clear as day that this films director Jared Hess who despite him being a film maker who has made some pretty funny films in the past really doesn't know how to direct his actors and get the best performance possible out of them and as a result of that is the fact that we get actors who whilst they aren't miscast do feel lost and unsure of themselves with the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there respective characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does hurt the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

Doing the CGI for this film is Digital Domain , Halon Entertainment , Sony Pictures Imageworks and Weta FX. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad as they are true to the style and the look of the game but what works for the game doesn't always work for the film as while having everything be blocked shaped in the game works because of the act that the game was produced by an Indie game studio and sot they couldn't afford to smooth things out and because of that it adds to the charm of the game but here tho because of the fact that this film has the budget to smooth things out and still keep true to the look and style of the game then that's something that they really should have done as this isn't a Sonic situation here as nobody would get upset with them if they changed just how the Minecraft world looked and if they did change how the world of Minecraft did look then it would mean that some the effects would come across as looking alot better then what they actually are as having everything be blocked shaped does feel oddly limiting in a feature film setting as nothing in that world looks right and doesn't look as pleasing to the eye as they could have done and while this films effects aren't bound to give anyone nightmares like the dwarfs in the Snow White remake are they do show that what does work in one medium might not translate all that well in another medium.

When Sonic The Hedgehog first came out we saw a huge change in quality from the usual bad video game movies. As that not movie not only respected what came before it but also the fans that brought it there and was willing to try new things with it's characters where as here because of the fact that the game that it's based off of has no plot and one central character this film just doesn't do any of that and instead plays it safe by doing the most marketable things that it could do as the makers behind the film are so just so unwilling to get creative and by not being creative there limiting the people that will actually like this movie as this film doesn't follow the games central idea of being creative as it gives us the most generic film possible and so the fans of the game aren't going to like it and the mainstream audience isn't going to like because of the fact that it just doesn't look good. With this issue not really being helped by the fact that Minecraft as a whole just isn't as popular as it once was with the franchise barely if ever being talked about anywhere be it online or not where as if you compare to it to Sonic or even Super Mario Bros those games and those characters have stood the test of time and so giving them a movie was always going to be win as those characters and those character are just as popular now as they were back in the nineties where as here due to the fact that Minecraft's popularity hasn't sored in years as it's sunk in popularity and Hollywood is just now choosing now to make a live actin adaptation out of it just feels like a way to remain popular without having to actually do the work and create good content and games for that franchise in the first place.

Like it or not this game was always going to difficult to adapt into any form of media outside of being a video game. As how do you adapt something that has no central plot to it and has really only one central character which even then the player can change to his or her own whim and the short answer is you don't as there is no way to do it because either way your going to messing with what it was that made the video game stand out in the first place and what made Minecraft stand out was the fact that it's world could be anything that you the player wanted it to be and there for the lore of that world could anything that you wanted it to be and not with this movie all of that goes out of the window as now we're being told that this is the plot of the movie and that this is the lore of the world which goes against everything that the original game was all about as that game was all about feeding your imagination and about feeding your creativity and none of that either comes across in this film or can come across in this film because of the fact that this film does have a plot with this issue being something that can only be solved in one way and that's by not making the movie at all which yes sounds harsh but when you have something that's all about feeding people's imagination and there creativity but also no plot to it the only thing that you can then do is leave it alone and not adapt it into any other medium as that is something that would go against what the game was trying to set out and do in the first place with this film being a perfect example of just because it can be adapted into a live action feature length film doesn't mean that it has to be adapted into a live action feature length film.

With this film being a comedy and having Jack Black in it you'd think that this film would be filled to the brim with funny moments in it. Well if you thought that then you'd be wrong as there nothing all that funny in it this film infact there's only about two actually funny jokes in this movie with neither of them having Jack Black in them and heck even the characters just aren't that funny as Jason Momoa is playing the kind of character who peaked in high school but then his life has gone down hill ever since then with Jack Black pretty much just playing an unfunny version of himself Emma Myers is playing someone who really wants to look after her brother because of the fact that he's the only close family that she has left with her brother being played by Sebastian Hansen who is just there and has no personality whatsoever outside of the fact that he likes to make things and that's really it and Danielle Brooks's character really didn't need to be in this film as she adds nothing to the plot of the film with this film films lack of jokes being made all the more worse when you take into account that alot of this films main actors are really funny actors and yet barely any of them get a chance to be funny with one of the films only funny jokes coming from Jennifer Coolidge as she makes a pretty funny wordplay jokes about halfway into the movie and that's really it and heck even the films main villain Malgosha is neither funny nor threatening with even her main plan in this film being just as generic as the plan from a lot of villains from alot of these movies even down to the fact that it comes down to her using a sky beam to help to achieve her end goal of destroying the world that Minecraft takes place in as that's just how generic of a villain that she is and how generic and unfunny of a film that this is.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and thirty six minuets and thirty one seconds. Which is pretty much the exact grand total running time that you'd expect a film like this one to have and to be fair this film really does have more then enough plot there to really cover that amount of running time but the issue comes from the fact that this film really doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as the world both human and Minecraft aren't that well developed and neither is all of the films many characters with them all just being the basic character type that you see in any family adventure movie with nothing new added to them with Jack Black being the leader of the group and Jason Momoa being the dumb one of the group and the rest are so interchangeable that there not worth mentioning as really any of them could fill out any other team trope character and it work out just fine and heck the film even drops a plot line between Emma Myers character and Sebastian Hansen's character for no reason whatsoever with there plot line actually being slightly adult and mature but also one that's been done to death but they get the gold star treatment when compared to both Danielle Brooks's character and Rachel House's as they get nothing interesting to say or do in this film with it coming across like the characters were more of an afterthought and that the makers of this film was hoping that adults would take there kids to see this film just based off of the fact that it has Minecraft in the name and that's really it but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.

So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I gave toa actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in his very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. With this films action being where the film was alot more fun to watch as we do get to see all of this films main hero characters working together alot of the time which does more then often then not result in some pretty fun to watch action scenes but at the same time rho because of the fact that this film has done so little to make us actually care for these characters and to want to make us want to seem them succeed in there goal of getting home and saving the Minecraft world then all it does is leave us feeling nothing when the film does have an action scene with this being especially true near the films third act where something happens to one of the films characters but due to high on the credits that this person is you just knew that they were going to be doing extra near the end of the movie and sure enough the film does exactly what you think that there going to do and they do it exactly when you think that there going to do it an while alot of this films action is pretty fun to watch it's also not that creative either with them doing things that's been done alot more better in other and quite frankly better movies with it also being more clear that the makers of this film put alot more effort into the films action aspect then they did into the actual comedy aspect of this film as while the comedy was mostly bad this films action was mostly fun and exciting to see play out in this film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall if you have a choice between taking any little ones to see either this film or The Day The Earth Blew Up A Looney Tunes Movie take them to see that film as both they and you will have a much more better time then you will with this generic and quite frankly mediocre film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all o the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 5 out of 10 from me.
