Carry On Spying Film Review
The Carry On films are a mainstay of British television with them being broadcast at the very least once a year. Yet it's somehow been two almost three years since I last took a look at one of these films let alone one of the good ones and well I thought that now was the right tome to put an end to that and so then join me as I review the film that spoofs the James Bond films with the film in question being called simply just "Carry On Spying" enjoy.
The plot of this film is one of Britains worst spies ais sent with a bunch of trainees to get back a secret formular before it's far to late. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually feature / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good with the film really nailing the James Bond formular down perfectly and knowing what spoof about not only the Bond films but the spy genre as a whole with this films plot being one that's just as wonderfully daft , silly and stupid as you'd expect from a Carry On film and yet at the same time tho this films plot is wonderfully fresh as not alot of films when this film was made had made fun of the spy genre and yet this film does so perfectly with the plot of this film perfectly capturing the tone and spirit of the spy genre and yet at the same time this films plot is not afraid to be dumb something that alot of films are afraid to be which says that the makers of this film knew full well what they were making and weren't afraid to lean into the fact that the plot of this film could also be considered a dumb plot with that being the very thing that makes this films plot really fun to watch as well as alot of films are scared to be dumb and yet this film does at times embrace that aspect of it's own plot and just have fun with it with the plot of this film also being really entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Kenneth Williams as Desmond Simkins and Dame Barbara Windsor as Daphne Honeybutt. Also starring in this film is Charles Hawtrey as Charlie Bind , Bernard Cribbins as Harold Crump , Jim Dale as Carstairs , Eric Barker as The Chief , Richard Wattis as Cobley , Dilys Laye as Lila , Eric Pohlmann as The Fat Man , Victor Maddern as Milchmann , Judith Furse as Dr. Crow and John Bluthal as The Voice Of Dr. Crow.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film weas in all honesty really good. With all of this films actors turning in some really good performances in this very film which is something that's not really all that surprising as alot of this films actors were a bunch of a really good actors in there own right with them all making there characters seem memorable and really making the best use of there time on screen as they possibly could have done with the best actor in this whole entire film being Kenneth Williams as Desmond Simkins as he's really playing against type in this film as in the Carry On films he usually played the elder authority type of figure who is always on edge and yet here in this film he's playing the type of character who is very cool and confident and yet doesn't realise that he's actually really bad at his job which does make for a really interesting performance to see in this film and it's something that really does make you wonder why other Carry On films didn't cast him as similar characters as he really is good as this type of character and yet they just had him play the same type of character in alot of the Carry On films with the acting that's in this film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance really will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Even tho this film is the ninth film in the Carry On franchise and even tho she is perhaps most known for being in these films this film is the first film to feature Dame Barbara Windsor. With her pretty much playing the same type of character that she always played in these films in that her character is a bit saucy and gets more of the films saucier jokes but at the same time tho given that this was her first film in the franchise and the fact that it's a role that she would play really well you can't really blame the makers of these films for always casting her in these roles as it would always generate laughs from the viewing public with even her iconic laugh being something that was and still is rather infectious and pleasing to listen to and yet as alot of us would know from her later career she can do more dramatic characters and it's something that does make you wonder why alot of her characters weren't given anything dramatic to say or do as doing drama is the easiest thing in the world to do and doing comedy is hardest thing to do with the role in this film really being helped by the fact that she really does have some really great chemistry with all of her co-stars something that would also prove to be a real talent as she would go on to have some really great chemistry with pretty much all of her Carry On co-stars and be just as good in alot of her Carry On films as well something that really does go to show you just how good of an actress that she was as she could pull of any type of character and yet still make it fun character to watch and make you want to see more of her as that character something that alot of people who loved the original Worzel Gummidge TV series would also know to be true as well.
As was mentioned at the start of the film and as you can all no doubt work out by the films poster this film does indeed poke fun at the James Bond films. With the chief target being the film From Russia With Love even down to both films UK posters looking strikingly similar and apparently Bond producer Albert R. Broccoli even demanded that the name "James Bind agent 006½" be changed to Charlie Bind and while the above poster is a modified version of the films original poster it still does look similar enough to the From Russia With Love poster even down to the Kenneth Williams character striking pretty much the exact same pose that Sir Sean Connery's James Bond strikes in the From Russia With Love poster and yet the Bond nods don't stop there as there is a scene very early one where one of the characters asks about getting a briefcase as a gadget only for the Kenneth Williams to say that that won't be happening due to the fact that the last time that they tried that an agent got into a fight on a public train and while yes granted the Carry On Spying scene does make fu of the idea of using a briefcase as a weapon even if it's store other weapons in it's still odd that they would go after the James Bond films albeit in a playful and respectful way as the Bond films were only just starting to get popular when this film was being made and released and even with the main villains name rhyming with Dr. No surely it would have made sense to target that film then to target then more recently released From Russia With Love.
In another piece of interesting trivia about this film this film was not only the final Carry On film to be made in black and white but it was also the second of three Carry On films to be made and released within the exact same calendar year. As this film would be released in the UK on the 29th of July 1964 and the following film Carry On Cleo would be released on the 10th of December 1964 and Carry On Jack being released at the start of the year on the 23rd of February 1964 with that film only being made possible to be released in such a short of amount of time due to the fact that they used alot of the same sets and costumes from the Cleopatra and so the work was already have done for them with both this film and Carry On Cleo even having alot of the same crew as well and while the Carry On films had made and released two films in the exact same year before as both Carry On Nurse and Carry On Teacher were released in 1959 it is still hard to make two films in the exact same year as it's something that does take alot of work to do as it takes alot of work to get one film made now imagine trying to make two of them in the exact same calendar year with both films even using the some of the same actors which for the Carry On films is pretty much a given but it is something that is still noteworthy as it would have saved them having to hire a whole new bunch of actors and while Carry On Cleo has the more recognizable bunch of Carry On actors in it that doesn't mean that this films actors aren't that good and didn't help to make this film as painfully funny as they did as that is something that they all did really well and while Carry On Cleo might be considered the best film in the series this is still a solid film in it's own right as well.
While there are alot of really positive things to say about this film there are alot of negative things to say about this film as well. Like the fact that his film really doesn't go far enough with spoofing the whole spy as while granted when this film came out the spy genre was still just becoming popular it would have been nice to see them spoof alot of things about the genre rather then just the Bond films like for example it would have been fun to have to see them use there "gadgets" as given just how ridiculous that they are the film really could have milked them for laughs and the other thing is the fact that the film wouldn't be able to be made today due to the fact that it does come across as being a tiny bit sexist at times not to the point where you feel dirty watching but rather it's to the point where you do start to notice it like for example Kenneth Williams character Desmond Simkins won't allow for Dame Barbara Windsor's character Daphne Honeybutt to do anything on the mission just because of the fact she's a woman and while the character does get outwitted because of this by her it is something that does make the film come across as being a tiny bit sexist to watch with this being something that really pretty much all of the Carry On films refrain from doing which only really makes it odder that it's in this film and it is something that makes you wonder why the films co-writers Sid Colin and regular Carry On writer Talbot Rothwell included it in this film as all it really does is date the film in a rather horrid way.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty three minuets and thirty six seconds. Which is pretty much the bogstandard running time for these films and to be fait tho this film really does have more then enough there interms of plot to really cover that amount of running time and while the fact that this film really doesn't use it's running time could and would be seen as being a bad thing in other films here it does kind of work as all of these films are essentially anthology films with different characters in each and every film and as such there's really no need to flesh out the characters as there not going to be in the next film or the one after that and while yes granted it would have been ice if the film did indeed flesh out it's characters a bit more as that could be something that makes the film alot more better then what it already is in this case it's also something that really would get in the way of the films jokes as alot of this films humor does come from the fact that this films main four characters are complete and total idiots that we know nothing about and therefor to give them character development would be to also rob the film of some great jokes but with that being said tho if this films was even five minuets longer then it would have been good thing as it then could have developed it's plot a little bit more as well but given that this franchise never really has deep and thought provoking plots to it it would also be weird for this film to have a well thought out and developed plot to it as well but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well the in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With this film having alot of genuinely funny laugh out loud moments in it with all of the films best jokes coming from just these four dumb spies characters just being themselves and alot of that does entail not only telling the franchises typical double entendres but also the characters just being dumb and fun characters as well all of which do lead to the film having some really funny jokes in it and while yes grated some of this films jokes might have aged like milk but those that haven't are some funny jokes that alot of people will find to be quite funny with it in all honesty being really quite hard to say what the best joke of the film is as there all just that good with one example oddly enough happening during the films opening titles as we see a Milk Man walk through all of these government doors all of which are saying not to go any further and yet all he does is the exact opposite of what he's being warned against doing which is a simple gag but sometimes it's the simplest of gags that hit the hardest and that's very much the case with that joke as even tho it's a really simple joke to do it's one that works and not only that but it's also one that lands and lands hard as well with the same thing also being true for alot of this films jokes as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall while there might be other and more really better films to be found in this franchise this film surely has to be one of the best ones as not only does have all of things that the people who love really do this franchise as this film really does have alot of the things that a franchise like this one is known for on top of it being a really good film in it's own right as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad rings that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly and 8 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images hat I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images hat I personally used in this very review from the official Carry On fandom wiki page , Wikipedia , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from the really great Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
