Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie Film Review
There are some British characters that all you have to do is mention there name and people even from else where in the world will know exactly who they are. The case is also true for the character that's the leading character in the film that i'm going to be reviewing for you all today as even the character only appeared in one live action series before this film came out he went to star in another live action film and have his own animated TV series as well with the character being so well known and beloved by millions of people that he made a star out of the person playing him and so then join me as I review the film that sees Britain's biggest disaster take on America with the film in question being called simply just "Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when his employers convince to him to be the guest of honor at an American art museum Mr. Bean travels to America to help with the unveiling of a piece of classic American art. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty as it does the thing that all comedy movies that are based off of TV shows seem to do and that's to take the central character out there more traditional location and let them loose in a new location with that idea working fine in this film as Mr. Bean could be placed in any location and as long as the set up for the jokes are funny then it will always work and that is the same thing with this film as well but what lets this film down plot wise is the fact that the plot of the film isn't allowed to be fully developed as the film doesn't give the plot the time that it needs to be fully developed and that is something that does make this plot somewhat forgettable as the film is more focused on going from joke to the next and while that might work for the show as the show was very episodic in nature in a film that doesn't really work and as such this film really should have given it's plot more room to breathe and develop then what it actually did with the plot of this film being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean , Peter MacNicol as David Langley and John Mills as The Chairman. Also starring in this film is Pamela Reed as Alison Langley , Harris Yulin as George Grierson , Burt Reynolds as General Newton , Richard Gant as Lieutenant Brutus , Larry Drake as Elmer , Sandra Oh as Bernice Schimmel , Danny Goldring as Security Buck , Johnny Galecki as Stingo Wheelie , Chris Ellis as Detective Butler , Andrew Lawrence as Kevin Langley , Peter Egan as Lord Walton , Peter Capaldi as Gareth , June Brown as Delilah , Peter James as Dr. Rosenblum , Tricia Vessey as Jennifer Langley and Tom McGowan as Walter Huntley.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With all of this films actors turning in some really good performance and while it would be obvious to point out just ho good Rowan Atkinson is not only in this film but as this character as well it's Peter MacNicol who does steal alot of the scenes that he's in and he has to play the straight man to Rowan's funny man which is alot harder to do and yet he does it with such ease and makes would could be seen as being a very dull and boring character seem at the very least somewhat interesting with all of this films more newer actors really turning in performances that are perfect for there character so much so that it's hard to picture literally anybody else playing these roles as these actors are cast just so beautifully and wonderfully well in these roles in this film with the acting that's in this very film not really being helped by this films script which is just so bad as it gives none of this films absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there respective characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does lower the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
One of this films biggest sins is the fact that it has Mr. Bean talk quite alot of the time and while yes the original show also had him talking as well it was usually only one or two words at the most. Where as here he speaks full sentences and that does kind of ruin this film as the whole appeal behind Mr. Bean as a character is that he's someone that everyone in every country can relate to as he doesn't speak and there for the comedy will always work and will always be funny and as a result of that fact is that when you change that aspect of the character then you have to change everything else about him to make it work which at that point he's no longer Mr. Bean he might as well be a completely different character and while this film doesn't change everything about his character the very fact that they had him talking full sentences does show that they were willing to try and fix something that wasn't broken and while it is hard to say who is to blame for this change in the character be it the American distributers or writers and co-creators Richard Curtis and Robin Driscoll or even the films director Mel Smith either way someones to blame and it is something that's really hard to tell who as it realistically could have been anyone of them and it is something that the film should get some flak for as it does against the very nature of the character and the very nature of silent comedy as a whole as Mr. Bean is a silent comedy character and yet this film does go away with that for little to no reason whatsoever and that is something that does hurt the film as well as the character of Mr. Bean as a whole.
The closest film that this film could possibly be compared to is And Now For Something Completely Different. As that film much like this film featured refilmed sketches from Monty Python's Flying Circus but where as with this film the idea to do that kind of thing for that filmed stemmed for the fact that the films producer wanted to get the Monty Python brand name known in America where as here while yes there is a story wrapped around those refilmed sketches seems to be done for no reason whatsoever and there are there more to remind to the fans of the character that they could be watching a much more better and funnier version of those sketches as for the original show the makers of that show who are also the makers of this film as well had to make the character of Mr. Bean likable and those around him seem unlikable even tho there the only ones talking sense in the situation which again is fine and works for the TV show but for a movie it's not really something that works all that well as these characters aren't going to disappear ten minuets later and be replaced with new characters and a new scenario and so the idea of reusing the same jokes from the show only done in a less funny way just serves to remind people that they could be watching a more funnier version of those exact same sketches when what the makers of this film should have been doing is focusing more on giving us sketches and jokes that are unique to this movie and this movie alone thus giving the film a sort replay ability value to it but as things stand there's really no reason to go and re watch this film when you could just see more funnier versions of the sketches in the original live action TV show.
To give this film at the very least some form of credit it's new characters do at least seem like there likable characters. With even the David character being one of the better side characters that Mr. Bean has ever had simply due to the fact that he's played by Peter MacNicol and it's his storyline in the film that is really more interesting then the main plotline as he has to learn to live with Mr. Bean for a few months and somehow win back the love of his wife and kids all of whom said quite frequently that they don't want Mr. Bean living with them because he creeps them out and because David invited Mr. Bean to stay with them before asking his family which does make his plot line in the film whilst it is somewhat predictable does fit in with his character as he does seem like the kind of a character who would hit first and ask questions later and seeing the two of them just bounce of each other is truly something wonderful to see but the issue is tho is that the film really doesn't fully spend alot of time on his plot and rather rightfully spends more time on the main Mr. Bean plot of the film and while is the right thing to do if your going to be doing something like that then the film really should have made the main plot better and more interesting then the side plot but since the makers of the film didn't bother to do that we are left with a main plot that's not as good as it's side plot was and heck the side plot alone could have made for a good movie in it's own right.
Again to give this film some form of credit it does know when to shift the focus between the two plots of the movie. With more often then not doing so in the exact same scene with the best example of this being the scene where David's family come back home in the middle of the night and he and bean come home drunk with the scene starting it's focus on the David subplot and then quietly shifting it's focus onto the main plot of the film which is just wonderfully done and heck the film even has a nice little scene with Kevin and Bean where Kevin unknowingly gives Bean an idea of how to save David's job at the art museum something which bean himself then acts upon in what can only bee best described as the films best scene as we get to see him use what very limited smarts he has already to outwit a security guard and fix the mess that made of a priceless painting and it's something like that that does make this film standout as it's something that could only be done in a feature length film where as alot of the film really could have been done in an episode of the show but yet that one sequence with Bean having to try and outwit the security guard wouldn't be able to be done on the shows limited budget and very limited running time just due to how much they really would need to sit up and because it's something that's unique to this film it does make this film stand out somewhat from all of the other Mr. Bean media out there but there is still no rewatch ability factor to this film outside of that one scene in the film tho.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty nine minuets and seventeen seconds. Which is pretty much the exact running time that you'd expects a film like this one to have and to this films credit it really does have the absolutely right amount of plot there to really cover this amount of running time the issue is tho is that this film really does feel like it's just an extended episode of the live action show with there being nothing special about this film either from a plot point of view or an acting point of view that makes it worth seeing and while yes granted this film holds alot of special places in people's hearts heck even I grew up with the film on VHS but at the same time tho there really should have been something special added to this film to make it warrant that amount of running time and there really should have been alot of effort thrown into the film to make it feel less like an extended episode of the show and alot more like a feature film as there times in this film where you could just picture there being an ad break and as a result of that is the fact that while yes this film can be very entertaing at times it does feel alot less like Mr. Bean: The Movie and alot more like an episode of the show and when you have a longer running time then an episode of the show then you really should take full advantage of that by developing the plot and the characters as well and that's something that this film really does fail to do as well but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. As alot of the film more better jokes are ones that were already seen in the TV show which makes them pointless to include in this film but the few original jokes that the film has do work somewhat really well with the best joke in the whole entire film isn't even the scene with Bean trying to outwit the security guard as it's instead the running joke at the hospital with Bean constantly being confused for a Doctor and having to perform these live saving operations which is something that really does work as the character of Bean gets a chance to be nothing more then a silent comedy character once again and just cause chaos and mayhem all other the hospital and that is who the character even tho he doesn't now it at worst and doesn't mean to at best and seeing him do that in a hospital really does work and makes that running joke even more funnier then what it would have been if he was put into a situation where he had to talk with the best bit in that whole entire sequence being the bit where he saves the cops life by straight up reaching into to him and grabbing the bullet out by hand something that he was able to do because he already found it when he reached into him to grab a sweet that he dropped accidentally inside the copper in the first place and the fact that he was able to save the copper life because of it made it even more funnier then what it really should have been as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall while the show might be better and while this movie does hold a special place in a lot of people's hearts it's not that good of a film and while the second film Mr. Bean's Holiday is more closer to the original show this film is easily the better of the two films by a long mile in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as being all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 6.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen that I personally used in this very review from the official Mr. Bean fandom wiki page , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from the really great Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
