The Addams Family 1991 Film Review
Halloween is now mere days away and as such it was only about right that something that features every bodies favourite kooky family. However with there being so many things featuring The Addams Family it really was hard to think of which one will be getting reviewed but when push came to show there really was one clear cut winner and so then join me as I review the film that brought the Addams Family into the nineties with the film in question being called simply just "The Addams Family" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when a load shark and her son start her scheme to convince The Addams Family that there once believed lost Uncle Fester has returned it's up to The Addams Family to survive this attack on their family once and for all. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good with this films plot not only being a really good way to bring this family in the nineties and yet at the same time also being a suitably epic enough for a family especially one that's based off of The Addams Family as its something that not only captures the magic of the comic strip but also the nineteen sixties TV show as well with it brining together all of the good parts that made those work in the first -place whilst at the same time also doing something new and different with the films plot as well which does keep it from being a boring and predictable plot as well which is something that really does go a long way to make the plot of this film one of the best things about the film as a whole with the film plot of this film also being really rather entertaing and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams , Raul Julia as Gomez Addams And Christopher Lloyd as Uncle Fester Addams / Gordon Craven. Also starring in this film is Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams , Jimmy Workman as Pugsley Addams , Judith Malina as Grandmama , Carel Struycken as Lurch , Christopher Hart as Thing , John Franklin as Cousin Itt , Elizabeth Wilson as Abigail Craven , Dan Hedaya as Tully Alford , Dana Ivey as Margaret Alford , Paul Benedict as Judge George Womack , Allegra Kent as Cousin Ophelia Frump , Mercedes McNab as A Girl Scout , S. Scott Bullock as The Voice OF Gate and Sally Jessy Raphael as Herself.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With all of this films actors turning in some really good performances in this film and while it might be a cliche to say that Christina Ricci is really good in this film it really need to be said again as she really is just that good in this film as she really does capture the spirit of the character whilst also making her just as wonderfully twisted and wonderfully macabre as you'd want her to be which is something that not only fits this franchise but it also suits the character down perfectly as well and the same thing is also true for the rest of the films actors as well as the actors that are portraying The Addams Family really do capture whatever it was that made the characters work so wonderfully well in the 1960's TV show whilst also updating them for the nineties as well with really the only real let down from an acting point of view being Jimmy Workman as Pugsley Addams and even then that's just because of the fact that the film doesn't really give the character a whole lot to do in the film and is of no fault of the actor playing him with even the new characters in this film being really well acted as well with all of this film acting really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors really have to do is just say the lines as they are written and good performance really will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
One of the most impressive things about this film is the fact that we get to see Thing out of his box for the first time in live action media. With Thing himself being the best looking effect in this whole entire movie as it really does make you wonder how they actually brought the character given that this film was shot in the last eighties early nineties and so CGI wouldn't have been that advanced to create fully human hand nor would have been possible to have a man a blue suit play the character and have computers remove him after filming is being done all of which really does make you wonder how Thing was brought to live in this film as there as an actors listed as playing the character and while yes the film does indeed make great of matte paintings to extend certain sets in the addams house and the film does indeed have some very basic looking CGI lightening at the end of the film nothing will be ever be able to however they did Thing in this film because of the fact that it is a real hand and practical effects will always look better then even the best looking CGI effects due to the fact that CGI does indeed date very quickly where as practical effects very rarely if ever age at all with this film and Thing himself being a very good example of just how ageless and timeless practical effects really can be when there used right and in the right way as is the case with this film as here almost every effect is done for real and it looks good because of the fact that it was done for real on the set and wasn't done in a computer.
To this films credit it does do something that none of the more recent Addams Family films do and that's make Uncle Fester the main character of the film. Which is something that does work really well for this film as the character on his own is an interesting character and given that he doesn't have his memories at the start of the film it does allow for him to be the audience type of character with him being the one that's asking all the questions to get to know the family which means that when he starts to trust the family and start to bond with the kids then we the audience do as well as we're seeing the family through his eyes and the fact that he is the main character of not only this film but also the sequel film as well is something that does work as there are more things that could be done with the Uncle Fester character then what you can do with alot of the other members of the family but with that being said tho it would have been nice of Pugsley got something to do in the film as well because as things stand he just comes across as being the least developed character where as all of the other characters including the films villain have a tone of personality and development to them with the same thing also being true for Uncle Fester as he learns to start to trusting the family again and not to trust the person that he believes is his mother but is only using for him for her own gains which is something that does make him a somewhat fully formed character in his own right whilst it's the opposite that's true for Pugsley who doesn't get any development and is really only there just because of the f act that he was in there comic books and that's really it.
One of the things that does work about this film is the fact that they knew that deep down The Addams Family are good people. As we see just how kind they are at several points in the film even to those that are actively trying to hurt them they still show acts of kinds ness to them and this also extended to the fact that when Wednesday goes missing after the party the whole family minus Fester goes out looking for her something that you don't really see done in alot of films and yet here not only is it done but it also shows us that these people are better people then the ones that are "normal" as the "normal" people are portrayed as being hateful of al things different even to the point where the one person that you expect to show kindness a Judge hates and lies to get rid of The Addams Family when all he had to do was just ask Gomez not to hit his golf balls at his house and he would have aimed in an a different direction and all Tully had to do was just ask for some money from the Addams's and they would have given it to him without a second thought and yet because neither one of those characters did neither of those things they both resort to doing evil things which in turn makes them look like bad people and this is something that all good Addams media needs to get right as deep down The Addams Family despite them looking and acting differently from the rest of us are perhaps really as a family unit better adjusted then the people that are "normal" really are because of the fact that they care for each other deeply and genuinely really nice people.
While this film does indeed have many great things about it one of the things that the film really doesn't do all that well. Is it's main villain as Abigail Craven really isn't all that interesting of a character as while we do see her treating Gordon / Fester horribly which does hint at her being a manipulative character who is willing to do whatever it takes to get whatever she wants there's nothing else in the film that shows that aspect of her character and while her character does have a clear end goal in mind of getting the Addams's fortune she doesn't really add anything to the little group of villains as it's Gordon / Fester that quite literally does all of the heavy lifting and it's Tully that acts as the brains of the group with him not only being the one to put her on to the fact that The Addams Family have this huge fortune but the fact that her "son" looks like Fester which makes you wonder it is that he role in the group is as she doesn't really add anything to the group other then to convince Gomez that Gordon really is Fester which even then when you take the ending of the film into account doesn't really take much convincing in the first place and as a result of that is the fact that it would have been better if she was made to be the brains of the group with Tully only getting lucky in finding out the stuff about The Addams Family and you could even show her taking some pleasure out of causing emotional pain to Fester as she is a character that really would do something like that but when she does do something that proactive like telling Tully to tie up and torture Morticia it is something that does make her an interesting character as it shows us the audience just really how much of a threat that her character really can be when she really wants to be.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and thirty nine minuets and fifty five seconds. Which is a really solid amount of running time for this film to have as when you really think about it this film really dies have the right amount there interms of plot to really cover that amount of running time and while yes this film would have been better if this film did have a longer running tie as that would allow for some of the films other characters like Abigail and Pugsley and to a lesser extent Grandmama as well for example to become more fully developed characters but at the sae time given that comic book films at this point in this time weren't really that good and really didn't have the best reputations of being good movies giving this film a shorter running time does also make alot of sense as well as it does allow to come and go really quickly something which does work for alot of bad films but since as this is a good film the film really should have had a longer running time to flesh out it's characters and it's plot since as things stand alot of the characters do come across as being really one dimensional characters and the plot itself really isn't as developed as it really could have been but at the same time tho alot of the scenes that really would have been used to fully develop it's characters would have really most likely have been seen as being filler scenes as they would have most likely have added nothing to the plot of this film but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I gave to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually feature / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With all of this films jokes being laugh out loud funny as not only are there some really painfully dark jokes in this film there's also alot of really well written jokes in this film as well with all of this films jokes feeling like the kinds of jokes that the characters would make with Wednesday having a more sarcastic sense of humour and so of course all of her jokes would sarcasm based with Morticia having more of a dark twist on the loving mother type of jokes like the fact that when she's trying ti get the kids ready to go out of an auction she lets them be late just so Wednesday and torture Pugsley some more and Gomez has more of the slapstick type of jokes and there all the kind of jokes that work well for all of there characters as well with all of the films jokes having a very dark edge to them as well with the best joke in the whole entire film being when the kids are doing there school play which does indeed start of as a normal type of play but then it gets more and more gory as it goes on with everybody in the first few rows of the audience getting drenched in blood all the while the rest of the family who hated the more cutesy stuff earlier on in the play suddenly come alive and see the more gory stuff as the best thing that the kids could have dine which is something that does make the joke even more funnier then what it really has any right to be in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall if you have little ones or little family members that are curious watching horror films then there's no harm in showing them this kid friendly horror film that has a small edge to it as it really is a film that holds up really all thee later and is easily better then the two recent animated The Addams Family films as well as that's just how good that this film really is in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in his very film un this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girl and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the mages that I personally used in this very review from the official The Addams Family fandom wiki page , IMP Awards .
