Space Jam: A New Legacy Film Review
The Looney Tunes are icons in the world of animation with there shorts having been delighting people since the nineteen thirties. With the characters seeing a resurgence in popularity in the nineteen nineties which was all mostly due to the success of two things the first was a series of commercials with Michael Jordan and Bugs and Bunny and the second of which was the success of the film Space Jam and while a sequel to that film was in the works for literally decades it finally came out in 2021 and so then join me as I review the film that sees the Looney Tunes being 3D computer animated for the first time with the film in question being called simply just "Space Jam: A New Legacy! enjoy.
The plot of the film is when he and his son are sucked into the Warner Bros servers Lebron James has to win a game of basketball by teaming up with the Looney Tunes in order to win both his and his sons freedom. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad but that's also the issue as the plot of this film wasn't all that good either with the plot of the film being a near carbon copy of the plot of the first film only changed in a few places and that's really it and where as the plot of the first film leaned into the fact that it was a Looney Tunes movie just on the big screen the plot of this film seems to do the opposite with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is one of this films producers LeBron James as Himself and Don Cheadle as Al-G Rhythm. Also starring in this film is Cedric Joe as Dominic "Dom" James , Sonequa Martin-Green as Kamiyah James , Khris Davis as Malik , Ceyair J. Wright as Darius James , Harper Leigh Alexander as Xosha James , Jeff Bergman as Bugs Bunny , Sylvester The Cat , Yosemite Sam , Yogi Bear and Fred Flintstone , Eric Bauza Daffy Duck , Porky Pig , Foghorn Leghorn , Elmer Fudd and Marvin the Martian , Bob Bergen as Tweety , Candi Milo as Granny , Gabriel Iglesias as Speedy Gonzales , Fred Tatasciore as Taz , Paul Julian as the Road Runner , Anthony Davis as The Brow , Damian Lillard as Chronos , Klay Thompson as Wet-Fire , Nneka Ogwumike as Arachnneka , Diana Taurasi as White Mamba , Rosario Dawson as Wonder Woman and Shake It Up and Spider-Man: No Way Home star Zendaya as Lola Bunny.
Now then interns of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty alot better then what it really had any right to be. With the films voice cast being the best performers in this film as lot of them have been playing there characters for decades and even Zendaya who is just voicing Lola for this film still does a good job in the role where the acting fails however is with the films live action cast who are just phoning in there performances at best ad in the case of LeBron James just straight up turn in a really bad and really wooden performance with the acting in this film not really being helped by the fact that the script for this film is really bad as it gives none of the cast absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there respective characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does effects and bring down the overall quality of the acting that's in this film.
Doing the animation for this film is Industrial Light & Magic , Luma Pictures , Cinesite , Stereo D , Virtuos and FuseFX. Now then interms of what personally thought / felt about the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all hone sty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good with the film using a mixture of 2D hand drawn animation and 3D CGI animation with both of them looking really good which really isn't all that surprising given who is involved with the making of this film with the characters looking surprisingly good in 3D animation and while nothing will ever top how the Looney Tunes will always look in 2D animation the fact that they did use that method of animation for a large portion of the films running time really does show that 2D animation is not dead with the 2D animated being some of the best scenes in the movie from an animation point of view.
One of the biggest issues that this film is the fact that LeBron James himself just really isn't that interesting. As he's not a looney character especially when compared to Micheal Jordan who we actively saw acting like a goofball when around his kids here the goofiest thing that LeBron does is smile and that's it and while that might be enough to please his fanbase it won't be and wasn't enough to please the Looney Tunes fanbase as by the nature of those characters being looney or having something looney about them it's kind of required that the main star also be a bit of a goof ball heck his friend / manager character in this film is a more looney character then he is and he's meant to be the comic sidekick character with this not really being helped by the fact that LeBron just isn't that likable of a character with him just coming across as being an unlikable character who's whole thing basically boils down to you either do things my way or just don't bother which makes seem like a really unlikable character who refuses to listen to anyone.
When this film was first being released it got alot of flack for what they did with Lola Bunny and rather rightfully so. As in the original film she was nothing more then a love interest for Bugs and was thus designed as such which made it all the more impressive when she did something that was truly amazing and yet in this film they stripped all of that away for no good reason and as a result what we are left with is a character that feels like she was made and created in the late 2010's or even the early 2020's where as The Looney Tunes Show went to get masseurs to not only keep the look and idea behind her original creation but also added a ton of personality to her so much so that when people do think of Lola Bunny now it's the version from The Looney Tunes Show that they think of where as this version of the character gets forgotten about as despite the fact that she is really well acted by Zendaya she just screams bland character and is the ending result of what you get when even the films director admitted to not even seeing the original film before singing on to make this one.
To give this film some credit it does have some really cool villains that not only look cool but also tie into the whole basketball theme of the Space Jam films. With alot of the villain characters having either traits or nicknames or designs that are inspired by there real life counterparts which is a great way to tie the film back into basketball without it being to heavy handed which is a huge step up on the original film as the original films villains were really tied into the whole basketball theme all that much outside of the fact that they stole the talent from several then well known basketball players and that's really it where as here we literally have the basketball players themselves playing themselves and it helps that Don Cheadle's character is a hugely entertaining even despite the fact that he doesn't really have a clear plan outside of the fact that he just wants to recognised for the work that he's done and that's really it but even tho he's not that memorable of a villain either despite him being one that is hugely entertaining.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and fifty five minuets and thirty one seconds. Which for this type of film really is on the long side of things not really helping things s the fact that this film really doesn't have alot there interms of plot to really cover that large amount of running time with alot of the film really feeling like padding as they don't really add to the overall plot of the film with the worst example of this being the scene where they recruit Lola as none of that scene adds anything to the plot of the film and is there just to make Lola look good and Bugs look bad with alot of the scenes involving Al-G Rhythm also adding nothing to the overall plot of the film either with both scenes being there just to pad the film when the film doesn't need padding out as the films plot could have gotten it to a really respectable one hour and thirty minuets but I will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy that means that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well the in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad for the most part. However that's also the problem as alot of this films comedy wasn't that good either with alot of this films not really feeling like the types of jokes that the Looney Tunes would tell and while the film does have some really good jokes in there like the stuff with Granny and Speedy in The Matrix world which was really pretty funny and the whole bit with Sylvester confusing Micheal B. Jordan with Micheal Jordan but then we get alot more really bad jokes like for example we have Porky Pig rapping for no other reason other then the fact that the makers of this film really wanted to make a The Notorious B.I.G. reference and that's really it and that just goes to show just how bad alot of this films jokes really are and while yes the jokes in the original film really aren't all that good either there alot better then the jokes that we got in this film tho in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall this film is a bad representation of what the Looney Tues could be like when there at there best and while it does show you just how Warner Bros really viewed them at that point in time thankfully they have started to view them in alot really more favorable light in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good ad as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official Looney Tunes fandom wiki page and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images this film being Google Images this is because really all of the images that I really got and used from the official Looney Tunes fandom wiki page are all really high quality with all the images that are currently up and on the great the official Looney Tunes fandom wiki page are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
