The Smurfs 2 Review
I promised you guys that i'd review all three of Sony Pictures made and released Smurf movies and I truly meant it. For some reason the first film made alot of money despite being pretty freaking bad and so you all know what means it's sequel time and honestly out of all the smurfs movies i'm taking a look at this is the only one that i've not seen and yeah I honestly wish that I haven't seen this film it's bad and so here is my review of the 2013 film "The Smurfs 2" at least the next film is good so there's that at least.
The plot of the film is after Smurfette is kidnapped Papa Smurf , Clumsy Smurf , Grouchy Smurf and Vanity Smurf travel back to the human world in order to get her back and with there help of there human friends have to put a stop to Gargamel's latest scheme. Yeah the plot of this movie is somehow worse then the plot of the first movie and considering how bad the first film's plot is that's really quite an achievement.
Returning to voice characters are singer Katy Perry as Smurfette and in his final ever role the late Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf. Also returning to voice characters are Anton Yelchin as Clumsy Smurf , George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf , John Oliver as Vanity Smurf and Frank Welker as Azrael , they joined by J. B. Smoove as Hackus and Christina Ricci as Vexy. In terms of how good the acting was the voice actors it was passable at best which is honestly the best thing that I can say about the overall acting in the film.
Returning as the human characters are Hank Azaria as Gargamel , Neil Patrick Harris as Patrick "Pat" Winslow and Jayma Mays as Gracie "Grace" Winslow. Joining them are Brendan Gleeson as Victor Doyle and Jacob Tremblay as Blue Winslow. Yeah everything I said about the voice acting also applies to the acting from the human it's just OK at best and terrible at it's worst none of the human actors in this are giving a truly great performance.
Now unlike the first film I have no idea who did the animation for this film which might very well be a good thing. Since the quality of the animation has dropped alot as has the quality of the CGI which even in the first film was pretty bad at best and so you have a fair idea of how bad both of them are in this film , since even for a kids animated film both of them are really bad which should never be the case.
Now then this film chooses to actually keep in something from the Hanna-Barbera 1980's animated show and i'm assuming the comics as well. That being the origin for Smurfette which I guess makes sense since she's the main character of this movie but at the same time it feels out of place since the first film went out of it's way to distance it's self from both the show and the comic books and so for the sequel to not only make reference to but also make a key plot point out of her origin to me felt kind of out of place.
I have to wonder why in the hell did Patrick and Grace name there kid Blue that's just guaranteeing that he'll get bullied. Which reminds me Patrick has no reason what so ever to hate his step father Victor in this movie since all throughout the film Patrick says how terrible and annoying he is and yet everytime we see him he's pleasant and charming to be around and it makes Patrick look like an annoying a*shole who needs to grow up.
Now despite telling almost the exact same story as the first film even having versions of the exact same scenes this movie is still somehow two minuets longer then the first film. Which honestly isn't that much of a problem since like the first film this does have good pacing but but this story doesn't demand and hour and forty four minuets to tell it's story hell it barely had enough story to fill up the first film which was an hour and forty two minuets long.
Now then boys and girls since this is a comedy that does mean that we have to talk about the jokes that are in the film. Which unlike the last film where there were at least a few decent jokes that would get a smile out of me this one on the other hand had no funny jokes whatsoever hell I never smiled or laughed once both of which you kind of need to do when your watching a comedy but the jokes in this film just weren't funny which is a very bad thing for a comedy.
Overall i'm glad that I finally saw this film just so I can say that i've seen all of the live action Smurfs movies and lived to tell the tale. Plus now it means that the bad Smurfs movies are finally behind me thanks freaking god for that since this movie is alot worse then the first film which was OK at the best of times and so this film gets a 1.5 out of 10 from me and you can all join me tomorrow for me review of "Smurfs: The Lost Village" no matter how bad that film is it's at least going to be better then this film.
