The Marine Review
Film and wrestling fans here we are at the start of the new year and well I thought that i'd give you a review of something that i've wanted to cover for a few days now but never really found the time to take on. These days we take John Cena as an actor for granted but people sometimes forget about his debut film or just straight up don't mention because the real star of this franchise is let's be real The Miz and so here is my review of the only film in this franchise to star John Cena The Marine.
The plot of the film is ex-marine John Triton has to rescue his kidnapped wife from a bunch of gangsters. Yeah there's not really much plot to this film at all outside of what I just described for you all and I honestly feel that not having that much of a plot does work for this film since the main star isn't the story it's the action and having a deep story would get in the way of having cool looking action scenes.
Starring in this film in his first major role in Hollywood is John Cena as John Triton and he is honestly fairly decent but i'll get more into his performance later. He is joined by Robert Patrick as Rome , Kelly Carlson as Kate Triton , Anthony Ray Parker as Morgan , Abigail Bianca as Angela , Damon Gibson as Vescera , Manu Bennett as Bennett , Jerome Ehlers as Detective Van Buren and Drew Powell as Joe.
In all honesty the acting isn't as bad as it perhaps could have been but don't get me wrong it's pretty bad but it could have been so much worse. Perhaps the worst offender in my opinion is John Cena but it's understandable since he's not a trained actor and was debuting in this film ans you all know by his future films would improve. Robert Patrick I felt was really good in this he knows that he's in a bad movie ans is just having fun playing this character.
Now despite WWE producing films in the past under different names The Marine was one of three films to be announced when the company officially announced WWE Films with the other two being See No Evil and The Condemned. Pretty much every film released by WWE Films now called WWE Studios has one or in some cases alot more of there wrestlers appearing in major roles so it's basically a way for them to capitalise on a wrestlers popularity.
Given how popular Cena was when this film was first being made it would have been super smart for them to release this film first. However they didn't they instead went with See No Evil starring Kane who while he was seeing a resurgence in popularity at that time had nothing on Cena so why they didn't go with this film first is beyond me maybe they wanted to get a horror film out first or maybe they felt that Cena wasn't popular enough at the time either way they made a big mistake by not releasing this film first.
For some reason they make alot of references to Terminator 2: Judgement Day in this film I get that you have Robert Patrick as your main villain but that doesn't mean you have to reference that film alot. Even the way John runs sometimes could be seen as a reference as it's similar to the way that the T-1000 ran in that movie but there's a chance that could have been just a coincidence and nothing more.
There is a reason why Cena never did any of The Marine sequels and it's that he had a terrible time working on this one. Now I don't know what terrible experiences he had with this film but it must have been pretty to make him not be the star of his own franchise he's not even cameoed in any of them he hated working on it so much he even admitted that he did just get some outside fame which I guess is a good enough reason to do the movie.
Lets us take a second to talk about the main villain of the film and yes I know that there's a whole gang but there just forgettable characters. Rome is honestly the best villain out of that whole gang because of how cold and calculated he is he's someone who is always thinking one step ahead of everyone else and yet at the same time the second he gets the chance he is more then willing to betray those who are loyal to him he even gets to the point where he doesn't know if he can trust his girlfriend that's how fairly complex he is.
Now then since this is an action comedy this means that we have to talk about both elements to lets start with the comedy. Thank god this is a comedy because if it wasn't all of the jokes that they have in here would feel out of place so much so it was getting to the point where I had to question is this was a comedy or not and thankfully it was. However that doesn't mean that the jokes were any good in fact very few of them were actually funny they were there just so a character could say random things in the hope of it being funny and they didn't work alot of the time.
Now then we've talked about the comedy side of this action comedy so that now means that we have to talk about the action that's in the film. I felt that the action was honestly the best part of the film mostly because it was so much fun to see play and and making it more fun for me was the fact that it doesn't boil down to who can hit who the hardest which is something that I very rarely see in any action film what so ever.
Overall this was a pretty fun debut for this franchise and while i've not seen any of the other sequels I do want to see them just to see if there still fun to watch. As you can no doubt work out from the above picture I might watch the latest one just because my love for Becky Lynch is stronger then anyone will ever know as for this film it's bad but in a way that it's so bad it's good and so it gets a 5 out of 10 from me.
