Bewitched Film Review

Film fans there are tons of films based of old TV shows out there and all of them have the exact same premise as the show. So then what happens when there's a movie based on a show but it has nothing to do with the show what so ever well you get something like the film that i'm about to review today and I have to admit while I wasn't planning on reviewing this film i'm kind of glad to say that i've seen it and so here is my review of the 2005 film Bewitched.

The plot of the film if you can even say the film has a plot is that Isabel is a witch who wants to give up her powers and so she runs away possibly to LA where she bumps into struggling actor Jack Wyatt who is putting on a reboot of the show Bewitched with himself as the lead and wants Isabel to play his wife. In terms of what I thought of the plot it's very thin at best which is a shame because the set up is very original it just needed a stronger story to support it.

Starring in the film is Nicole Kidman as Isabel Bigelow / Samantha Stephens , Will Ferrell as Jack Wyatt / Darrin Stephens , Shirley MacLaine as Iris Smythson / Endora , Michael Caine as Nigel Bigelow , Jason Schwartzman as Ritchie , Kristin Chenoweth as Maria Kelly , Heather Burns as Nina , Jim Turner as Larry , Stephen Colbert as Stu Robison , David Alan Grier as Jim Fields and Katie Finneran as Sheila Wyatt.

There's honestly alot more actors in this then i've listed here i've just been lazy and only listed a small handful. As for what I thought about the acting it's one of the best things in the film but that's not really a high bar to reach since alot of the film is pretty bad and so anything that's ok is going to look excellent by comparison and I will say that the actors that you expect to deliver a solid performance do indeed deliver.

Now as some of you might have noticed this film is loosely based of the show of the same name and when I say loosely I mean the only thing that they have in common is the name and the fact there's witches. I'm honestly ok with this film not being a direct adaptation of the show just because the show it self would be difficult to adapt into a film and so changing the whole setup and making it something original actually makes sense.

This kind of set up could also have worked if it had a plot like maybe the show starts to struggle and our two leads have to convince the network that it's worth picking up for a full series all the while they start falling in love with each other. Yes that's a fairly bad plot but at least it is a plot where as here all we get is the set up and nothing more which is a shame because doing something new with this name could honestly work really well hell you could even make some jokes about hollywood itself.

Something that really did bug me about the film and it's a very small thing it's that almost every character in the film loved the original show. While the show did run for 8 seasons and so it is possible that at least some of these characters liked the show it however isn't possible for the vast majority of them to like the original show given that some of the characters look to be in their twenties and the show started airing in the sixties even taking into account that they must likely saw the show on repeat it's highly unlikely that they loved the show.

The film also doesn't go that far with it's setup which like i've said several times by now is pretty original. Heck I even offered a plot that have worked well in the world of the film and i'm sorry to keep on bringing up the set up but it really was a waste of a good idea in my opinion and it's something that could and should have been fleshed out more and had more done with it heck they even could have made the making of the show the main focus instead of something that just happens a few times.

This is a liar revealed story well it kind of is and it does have the same pitfalls that those types of stories do have. Like for example there's a scenes where one of the characters finds out the truth and gets all upset and there's a scenes where the main couple breakup but they get back together a few minuets later and all is forgiven yeah as you can tel I hate liar revealed stories just because there a cheap way to cause drama and it's always something that you can see coming a mile away.

This a romantic comedy and that so let us first talk about the romance part of this movie because why the hell not. I hate romance movies especially romantic comedies I just find them boring and predictable and yeah the same thing was true here on top of that I just didn't buy the romance between these two which is a shame because thats the focus of the whole film so you thought that some effort would have been put into making it semi believable at best.

Now that we've talked about the romance part of this romantic comedy let us now talk about the jokes in the film. I'm not going to lie I did laugh a few times in this movie not alot to say that this is a really funny movie but enough to say that there are some decent jokes in here altho I do wish that they removed some of the scenes with Isabel talking to her cat simply because they weren't that funny to me but that's just my opinion tho.

Overall this wasn't a bad film by any means but it could have been so much better and worked so much more. I honestly do feel that a film version of Bewitched no matter how hard it would be to pull off could indeed work it would just need the right team to pull it off and I don't feel that the team behind this movie were the right team to do it and so the film gets a solid 4.5 out 10 from me and thank god this review is over now I hope none of you hold a GRUDGE over me for these opinions and yes that was a huge clue for what might be my next review.
