St Trinian's 2007 Film Review
Movie fans I do occasionally like to review British films mostly because I live in England and also because no one talks about our films outside of the James Bond films that is. So I thought that instead of reviewing the new Jumanji movie which yes I was planning on doing I will instead take a look at a small little known British film which has some pretty well known names and so here is my review of St Trinian's.
The plot of the film is St Trinian's is a boarding where the girls run riot and the teachers are just as bad but now the school is facing closer and it's up the students and the staff to find away to save the school. That's really all you get in terms of plot since the film mainly focuses on the situations that the girls find themselves in rather then telling a deep and complex plot which in this case i'm honestly fine with since you don't really need a deep and complex story in comedy but you do need a strong story which this really isn't.
Starring in the film is Talulah Riley as Annabelle Fritton , in her film debut we have Gemma Arterton as Kelly Opossum Jones , Rupert Everett as Miss Camilla Dagey Fritton and Carnaby Fritton , Colin Firth as Geoffrey Thwaites , Russell Brand as Flash Harry , Cersei Lannister as Miss Dickinson , Tamsin Egerton as Chelsea Parker , Antonia Bernath as Chloe , Amara Karan as Peaches , Paloma Faith as Andrea , Juno Temple as Celia , Kathryn Drysdale as Taylor , Lily Cole as Polly and The Thirteenth Doctor herself Jodie Whittaker as Beverly.
Only in this film will you find The Doctor and Cersei Lannister not only working together but also kind of friends. As for the acting in the film how do I put it given the talent involved with the project I honestly expected better that's not to say that the acting is dreadful but the actors have been in better things and have alot of talent but this film really doesn't do a good job of letting that talent show on the screen.
This film is actually the sixth film is a series of films which started all the way back in 1954 with The Belles of St Trinian's. In fact this isn't even the first time that the series has been rebooted since there was a reboot in 1980 called The Wildcats of St Trinian's which from little information I could gather isn't that good of a film since it flopped at the box office and hasn't seen a DVD release in the UK so that's really saying something.
Both this film and the other films in the series are based on a series of comic strips by Ronald Searle called St. Trinian's School. The strips only lasted for six years between 1946 and 1952 but from what I can gather they were quite popular hell they must have been popular to spawn an entire film series which now has sadly over taken the comic strips in terms of popularity and from a can gather the strips were published in a magazine called Lilliput which ended publication in 1960.
It really did shock me learning how many future stars were in this film heck I had to cut out some of them just because not alot of them added that much to the film. We have stars like Toby Jones , Paloma Faith and as i've already mentioned Jodie Whittaker it's just nuts that this small British film, could attract people who would go on to become pretty big names here in the UK and for many of them this was there first feature film as well.
As you can tell by the picture above the great Stephen Fry does also appear in this film but his role is basically that of an extended cameo altho he does get a few funny lines with the future Doctor so look out for any references in the New Years Day episode of Doctor Who. Again I have to wonder how they got Stephen Fry to appear in this film because he is a really well known person and his fee would easily have eaten up the whole budget for the film.
Now even tho the film's plot isn't that much of the focus it oddly spends alot of time setting up the heist part of the story. Which I wouldn't mind as much if they had spent as much time developing the characters and the world around them but they don't at all so even tho they rightfully spend alot of time telling you every detail of the plan they don't really say why you should care about the characters or why we want to see them succeed both of which are crucial things for any film not just a comedy.
Heck they don't even do that good of a job of making the characters likeable I get it that the girls are meant to be seen as troublemakers and lawbreakers but they also have to be likeable. I even found myself cheering for the bad guy of the film because all he's trying to do is his job and these girls are preventing him from doing so and yet somehow he's the bad guy how does that even work if he's the bad guy then make him do evil things don't have him act like a decent person and don't have the good guys acting like a*sholes all the time.
Now then since this is a comedy that means that we have to talk about the comedy that's seen in the film itself. EWhich I have to say while this film does indeed have some funny performances again see Stephen Fry and Jodie Whittaker as examples of that the actual jokes that the film tries to tell just don't work at all I honestly feel that if the film focused more of getting a funny performance out of the actors then it would be alot better instead the focus is more on telling these bad jokes then getting an actual funny performance.
Overall this is a pretty decent and I can see why it got alot of negative reviews when it first came out I however liked it back then and I still like it now. Altho I like it mostly for the stunning women not gonna lie but that doesn't mean that I don't reconise it's flaws and trust me there's alot of them in this film like I actually dare someone to go and watch this film and make a video pointing out everything wrong with it for me tho this film gets a 5.5 out of 10 from me.
