Good Boys Review

It's very rare for me to review a comedy in fact I can't even recall the last comedy that I reviewed that's how rare it is. I will admit that i've had my eyes on this film for some time so you just know that I was going to review this film the first chance that I got but i'll admit that i had the choice between reviewing this film or Blinded By The Light but I chose this honestly because of the Rotten Tomatoes score and so here is my review of Good Boys.

The plot of the movie is three sixth grade best friends are about to attend there first kissing party and so in order to learn to how to kiss they use a drone belonging to one of the kids parents when that drone gets captured it's up to the three friends to get it back by any means they can. In terms of what I thought of the story it's very different from what the trailer made it out to be and in this case that works in the films favour since I had no idea what was going to happen next.

Starring in the film is Jacob Tremblay as Max , Brady Noon as Thor , Keith L. Williams as Lucas , Will Forte as Max's father , Molly Gordon as Hannah , Midori Francis as Lily , Josh Caras as Benji , Christian Darrel Scott as Marcus , Lil Rel Howery as Lucas' father , Sam Richardson as Officer Sacks , Retta as Lucas' mother , Millie Davis as Brixlee , Chance Hurtsfield as Atticus , Izaac Wang as Soren , Benita Ha as Soren's mother , Michaela Watkins as Saleswoman , Lee Eisenberg as Leigh Eisenberg and Stephen Merchant as Claude.

The acting in the film isn't that bad considering all of the main cast are young kids so they all very easily could have been annoying as all hell. I was actually surprised to see the kid from The Smurfs 2 is not playing the lead role in this movie but is actually a really good actor and I hope to god that he gets to be in bigger things because this kid has a very bright future ahead of him in acting be it in films or TV.

The film is the feature directorial debut for Gene Stupnitsky who's best known for writing several episodes of the American version of The Office as well as Hello Ladies for HBO. I'll say that as it's his time directing a movie since he did write the film version of Bad Teacher he didn't do that bad a job the shots are all well done and the story is very well paced but I will say that he should have put more emphasis on the characters rather then the jokes.

This is a major issue because we don't get to find out that much about the main characters all we know is the things that are set up early on. Which while not a bad thing it does make them seem two dimensional which for the secondary characters isn't a bad thing since we're not expected to care for them but he does it to the main characters as well and that means that we don't really get to care for the characters as well as get to really know what they are like.

I have to say that whoever names there kid Thor is either the greatest parents of all time or really wants there kid to be punished because seriously unless your name is Odin why would you name your kid Thor. This is something that honestly really bugged me because if a kid with that name existed you just know that he'd be getting picked on by pretty much everyone at his school or his parents would just be the coolest parents ever.

Now i'm not going to name names or say where I saw this comment because it's not a legal website and it wouldn't be fair to the person who said this but someone said that they don't like this film because they thought it was a film that kids could watch. To that I have to say did they read the synopsis because they make references to drugs in it and did they not see the poster because there's a huge R rating on it all of that should be enough to tell you that the movie is not made for little kids but clearly people need telling that an R rated comedy not made for kids is shockingly not made for little kids.

Now at least one of the characters do actually have some sort of character arcs with the character of Thor learning that it's ok to want to sing. It's a cheap character arc since you know that what's going to happen in that arc but in the film's defence it's not an arc that's not been done that often so it was nice to see it done here and it was a story that was really well told and I can't honestly think of an R rated film that has a character arc.

Now this is a comedy and that does mean that we have to talk about the jokes and incase your wondering the jokes are the only thing that makes this an R rated film. Which to me is a pretty bad thing because if you toned the jokes down then this film could very easily be a PG13 because there's nothing story wise or character wise that warrant this kind of rating and so it's there just to make those going to see the movie feel like there going to see something mature.

Those people would be wrong in that regard because all of the jokes in the film are sex jokes and while some of them aren't funny there are a few which are. I just wish there was a nice mixture of the types of joke that we were getting instead of just getting a nice verity and it does get rather boring after a while since a comedy should have a verity of types of jokes so this film could have had some good word play mixed in with some slapstick but instead all we get is sex jokes and nothing more and it does work both for and against the film.

Overall this is a really good and it is very entertaining but if it had been in more experienced hands then it could have been better as it is tho the film gets a solid 7.5 out of 10 from me.
