Ali G: Who Iz I? Film SPOILER FILLED Film Review
After it being twenty four years since the Ali G character had last appeared in a film and fourteen years since he last starred in TV shows thanks to Ali G: Rezurection. He has a new a new film out and well it's one that like alot of Sacha Baron Cohen films not alot of people knew was coming and so then join as I give you my SPOILER FILLED review of the film that reveals something Ali's backstory with the film in question being called simply just "Ali G: Who Iz I?" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when he is offered money by HBO to another series of Da Ali G Show Ali and his girlfriend travel to America where things have changed since he was last there. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The films plot for the type of film that this is was alot more better then what it really should have been as by all rights this is a film that should have had a really bad plot to it and yet the plot for this film does end up being being alot more better then what it really should have been. With the film even trying to tell a plot in the mockumentary format by having Ali having to escape being cancelled by some people and having to come to terms with the fact that he's about to be a dad both of which are good ideas but due to this being a mockumentary film there not really allowed to be as good as they could be due to the fact that the film does have to weave them in with interview segments and with segments from the public which here do feel forced in whereas in films like Borat for example thy felt like they were helping to move the film forward as they were ties to what was going on in the films plot whereas here they are so disconnected from the plot of the film that they might as well as not be in the film in the first place with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this films is this films co-producer , co-writer and director Sacha Baron Cohen as Ali G , Dr. Nira Cain-N'Degeocello and Erran Morad , The Windsors star Morgana Robinson as Julie and Alpha Miknas as Manu. While there are more people in the film as we do see Ali interviewing alot of people the three people listed above are the only one as of this writing listed on IMDB and to be fair this is the kind of film that doesn't really need alot of people starring in it as the main reason and the main actor to see this film is the first one listed with the rest of them not really being all that needed and interms of that the rest of the films actors are only there to be the straight man in alot of the situations much like Charles Dance was the straight man in the previous Ali G film. What is something that does let all of these side actors down is the fact that they are just that side actors as none of them do alot that's all that funny with them all just being there to make sure that Sacha Baron Cohen is on top form which to this films credit he is but it also makes the film feel alot less like a celebration of the Ali G character and more of an ego boost for Sacha Baron Cohen when it would helped the film out alot more if he did surround the character with other characters that could be just as if not more funny then he is as while he is still really funny in this film it would have made the film feel more like a celebration of the character and feel a lot less like an ego boost, while yes he does play alot of characters in this film all of them end up playing a major role in the film when this is where adding in more actors not so much that you loose the mockumentary nature of the film but enough that it does make the film feel a lot less of an ego boost for him as an actor.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With all three of this films actors turning in some really good performances but again due to the fact that this film does feel like an ego boost for Sacha Baron Cohen none of the films other actors are allowed to truly shine as well as he does as they both have so much little to do in the film this is not to say that they are bad as the scenes that they have are really good and they are really funny it's just that there not given that much of a chance to show us what it is that they can do as actors. With the best actor in this film of course being Sacha Baron Cohen this is something that is not really all that surprising as he all of the characters that he plays in the film are characters that he is reprising with Ali G being the oldest character out of the three and to be fair he does look like he's having the most fun whilst playing him as when he is playing the other characters he oddly looks both both bored and disinterested and yet when he's playing Ali you can see that he has a twinkle in his eye like he's missed playing this character with his own natural charm really coming through in this film. With the acting that's in this very film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
The films characters to be fair aren't that bad there not great either but given the fact that this is a mockumentary film this is kins of understandable. The films characters are very thin at best which if this was a normal film would be a big issue but given the fact that this film is meant to be a mockumentary an therefor we don't get to spend alot of time with them as characters this is something that does kind of work in the films favor but in saying this tho we do get to spend more time with these characters then we do alot of the characters in say either Borat film or even Bruno for that matter and yet there's nothing to the new characters that makes them feel fresh and there's nothing new added to Ali to make him feel more fleshed out. Even a character like Julie who is someone that was mentioned all the way back in the original Da Ali G Show but was never seen and was both scene and heard in the first Ali G film here doesn't really get alot added to her this is despite the fact that she does play a big role in the part of the film as while she is still Ali's moral compass that's really all she is as the makers of this film don't really do anything with her as a character and the same thing is true for alot of the other characters as well like the character of Manu who is meant to be an assistant to the overly left wing Dr. Nira Cain-N'Degeocello and yet Manu just mostly appears in the background which given the character that he is paired with that is such a missed opportunity for some good comedy with both of the characters and yet nothing is done with him with the same thing even true for Erran Morad whom despite being very heavily promoted in the films trailers doesn't appear alot in the film and doesn't really add anything to the film as a whole this despite the fact hat both he and Dr. Nira Cain-N'Degeocello are technically the films main villains.
SPOILERS START HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As you ca no doubt work out this film does include two characters from Sacha Baron Cohen's other comedy show "Who Is America?" this was something that was a bold choice as that show didn't last very long and is largely forgotten about. With this being something that does now say that both Da Ali G Show and Who Is America? do take place in the same fictional world and yet the film doesn't really do anything all that interesting with either character outside of just having them show up every now and then until they go on to play a big part in the films over the top and absurd third act where a visibly pregnant Julie gives birth to Ali's son but due to the fact that Dr. Nira Cain-N'Degeocello doesn't like Ali for political reasons he convinces Erran Morad to get some local people together and kidnap Julie and make sure that the kid isn't born on American soil and when that doesn't work they then air lift the baby via drone several feet in the air and drop it only for Ali to catch the baby mid air. This is such an absurd ending for the film and the fact that the makers of this film used the characters from this lesser known show as the villains to this still very highly popular character does say they they either never liked the characters or that they thought that "Who is America?" was a bad show otherwise why would they go to extreme's to make them the villains when they could have created new characters for the film to fill out that role and heck even coming up with new characters is somethin that would have allowed Sacha to go into the public more often and just just mess around with them alot of more as no one would have scene these characters before whereas with the established characters there is a huge risk that he might get caught out and while the characters from "Who Is America?" aren't as well as known as the characters from Da Ali G Show it is still a risk that would have harmed the films mockumentary style of comedy.
This film has a weird release strategy as it was first due to get a wide theatrical release which was then cut down to a limited to still decent one week released and then a few days before the film was due t come out that got cut down even further to a two day release being released the exact same weekend as Clayface. This is all before the film eventually got released on Prime Video which makes you wonder why not just stick with the wide release as the Ali G character is still slightly popular in the UK for it to work and heck given the fact that there's not alot of big hitters outside of Clayface and maybe Wildwood it would have made some decent but not big money at the box office and yet by cutting the film of at its knees before it even has a chance it now means that the film can't and didn't make money at the box office as why would people want to pay for something when just a few days later they'd get the chance to watch it for free on Amazon Prime Video. At the very least Borat Subsequent Moviefilm was just given a Prime Video release therefor there was no messing around with the release of the film here it jus seemed like the studio didn't have that much faith in the film and therefor just kept on cutting the release window shorter and shorter when it still would have made them some money as these films aren't expensive films to make and therefor the film would have made back it's production budget within two to three weeks but now we'll never know how much the film might have made or if it would have been a flop as the studio for some weird reason got scared and decided to basically just release the film for a few days before dropping it onto Prime.
To give this film some credit it does try to blend the mockumentary format with a more linear approach to telling it's story. Which is a bold and daring to try and do and it does result in us getting some really funny moments out of the film but this is a film that works it's best when it's telling a more linear story and while there are some segments with the public that are genuinely really funny like when Ali goes and does somethings in a store all of which are really good and funny but it's when the film is telling it's more linear story that it can go to those more out there and wild places which is something that you can do with a character Ali G as he is a more wild and out there kind of character heck his first film had him getting into politics just to save a leisure centre. Yet here due to the fact that the film can't really decide on what type of film that it wants to be is does kind of lead to these awkward moments where it just seems like the makers of this film are trying to shock you for the sake of shocking you which is something that only works once in this film and the rest of the times that they try it it just doesn't work but it is something that makes you wonder what the people that he is talking to where thinking when they first talked to hi as there had to be a point where they realized that they were being pranked as he does have the American public in this film doing alot of extreme stuff and it all makes them look really bad and who knows maybe this is a reason why Amazon kept on cutting back the release of the film, with the fact that the he does get the American people to do these out there things a few of which actually end up being key plot points in the film.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and thirty one minuets and twenty six seconds. This is pretty much the exact running time that you'd expect a film like this one to gave and to b fair you really couldn't get this film to be any longer as they would be stretching the film beyond breaking point and while yes there was more then likely enough stuff filmed for the film like there was with Borat 2 where you release another series here it would seem like we would just be seeing the stuff that was better left out of the film as this film does have a tight plot and therefor alot of the films scenes would need to be about advancing the films plot with the film having more then enough plot there to really cover that amount of running time in the first place. Yet this film still doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as the film still doesn't take the time to fully develop its plot as the film does have to cut between scenes that are there for the mockumentary part of the film like Ali interviewing people on his Tiktok show which yes is funny but it also doesn't effect the films plot in any meaningful way for a long time with the makers of this film being more focused on forgetting the fact that Da Ali G Show actually started out in the UK before it came to America then they were in giving the films plot some actual plot development. This is something that does effect the films character development but this is a case where you could argue that these characters were never fully designed to get character development as the whole point of them is to be these rude and offensive people which is fine for a TV show but for a movie the characters do need to learn something even if it's just something small with the makers of this film being more focused on not having the side characters do all that much instead of giving the films characters some actual character development but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk abut the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty pretty good. The film does have jokes in it that do take shots at both the left ad the right and will make both side unhappy and you no what good because those jokes are not only funny but there also true and if you can't see that then your part of the problem this is a film that is designed to offend you and is meant to make you feel weird and it's jokes really do a really good job of doing exactly that. With the best joke in the film being when Dr. Nira Cain-N'Degeocello and some recruits break into Ali's hotel room to get some of his DNA to prove that he is not half black and when they get in there Dr. Nira Cain-N'Degeocello has to pretend to be Julie by getting it on with Ali all the while this really cheesy song plays in the background with the whole scene being very reminiscent of the naked fight in the first Borat film as it is something that is so genuinely shocking that it does catch you off guard and it does make you start laughing with this being a really good example of how shock comedy can work if it something that is genuinely funny and the fact that it also plays apart in Dr. Nira Cain-N'Degeocello's downfall by coming back into play later on in the film by having it be revealed that he got arrested for essentially assaulting Ali is just the cherry on top with the rest of the films jokes being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
SPOILERS END HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overall look go and see this film as it is just a good film is as good as the first Borat film is no but it's alot more better then what Bruno was and it is something that does prove that Sacha Baron Cohen does still know how to use the Ali G character outside of nostalgia trips for Da Ali G Show in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good an well as all of the bad things hat are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
