The Odyssey Film SPOILER FILLED Film Review
There are some films that when they announce who is directing them you right away get excited for it with this being true for Christopher Nolan. As no matter how bad his films get you always get excited for them as you know that your going to be getting something truly special and well he's just released a new film and I thought that i'd talk to you all about today and so then join me as I give you my SPOILER FILLED review of the film that has a really great group of actors in it with the film in question being called simply just "The Odyssey" enjoy.
The plot of this film is a Greek solider by the name of Odysseus tries to find his way home after the battle of Troy all the whole trying to regain his own memories of the battle itself. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that' actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The fact that this film has a really good plot to it is something that isn't all that surprising as for the most part Christopher Nolan films do have really good plots to them and whilst this film does follow suit in this regard as it would be stupid to deny the fact that the films plot is good. The fact does remain that is a pretty weak plot as well as the film doesn't make it easy to fully understander just wat the main plot of the film is in the first place and heck I had to look up the film on Wikipedia just to get a good idea of the films plot which granted is more in line with Chris's style but at the same time there does still need to be more of a focus on plot to make it easier for us the audience to work out just what it the main plot of the film is meant to be in the first place as without doing that it does end up leaving us lost and confused which is something that wouldn't be bad if this film wasn't a plot heavy film as then you could relay on the film being more about spectacle then about plot but here the film is less about about spectacle and is more plot heavy and therefore there should have been more of an attempt on the part of the makers of this film to give this film a plot that is more easier to follow along with with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Matt Damon as Odysseus , Tom Holland as Telemachus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope. Also starring in this film is Robert Pattinson as Antinous , Lupita Nyong'o as Helen Of Troy and Clytemnestra , Samantha Morton as Circe , John Leguizamo as Eumaeus , Zendaya as Athena , Benny Safdie as Agamemnon , Jon Bernthal as Menelaus , Bill Irwin as Polyphemus , Himesh Patel as Eurylochus , Corey Hawkins as Polybus , Mia Goth as Melantho , Logan Marshall-Green as Melanthius , Jimmy Gonzales as Cepheus , Andrew Howard as Polites , Travis Scott as a bard , Elliot Page as Sinon , James Remar as Tiresias , Elyes Gabel as Elatus , Ryan Hurst as Mentor and Charlize Theron as Calypso.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that' actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. Again as with the films plot you do expect there to be good acting in a film from this director and to be fair this is something that the film does give us in spades as all of this films actors are really good in this film with them all giving it there best not just because of the fact that alot of them are rally good actors in there own right but also because of the fact that Christopher Nolan really does know how to get good performances out of all of his actors. With the best actor in this film film very easily being Anne Hathaway as Penelope as she does get alot of the films more dramatic scenes and she really does nail them each and every time with us the audience really buying into her performance as this character who has spent years away from her husband and just wants him back no matter the cist with her performance being something that makes this film alot more better as you know right away that when one of her scenes does come up that your going to be getting something truly special and heck it could even be argue that her acting in this film might get some awards as she is just that good in this film with her acting being helped by the fact that she does appear to have a good grasp on who Penelope is both as a character and as a person and therefor her performance does feel more authentic which is something that really does shine through in her performance. With the acting that's in this very film really being helped by the fact that this f9lms script is just so good that all this film actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Whilst both the plot and the acting for this film are indeed really good the same thing cannot be said for this films characters. As all of this films characters just feel very undercooked with alot of them not really having anything interesting about them in the first place which is something that does make it hard to connect to them as characters as they are all just so bland which is something that you don't really expect to see in a Christopher Nolan film as usually he is really good at giving us well thought out characters even in films where he is adapting characters and yet here it felt like that he was taking things easy as all of these characters just come across as being bland and forgettable characters that people will be forgetting about five minuets after watching the film. Things are not really helped by the fact that there are alot of characters in the film with there being just as many characters in this film then there is an episode of Game Of Thrones and yet the makers of this film do nothing to make each character stand out from each other therefor when a character does turn up you have to struggle to remind yourself of how that character is and what they are like in the first place whereas if there was more of an effort put into making this films characters stand out then this is something that really wouldn't be an issue as the audience would be able to remember who each character is in the first place, something which is further hindered by the fact that alot of the characters do disappear for large portions of the film which is something that would be an issue if they were side characters but nine times out of ten they are main characters and yet there's nothing to them and if the makers of this film did want to give us well thought out characters then they really should have done exactly that and not give us half baked ideas for characters.
SPOILERS START HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Look it would be super easy to talk about all of the controversy surrounding this film but if you guys want to see that all you have to do is spend five minuets on X. Here in this review tho we are just going to talk about the film itself and the fact does remain that controversy aside this film isn't one of Nolans best works as it does feel like that he's trying to hard to be the master film maker that he is as while the film does have good acting and a good plot the film does also have things that work against the film like for example the film is really confusing as even tho it's based on Homer's Odyssey the film doesn't rally take the time to make things clear for us the audience which is fine for the book as you have countless pages to do that but for the film version you do need to be a little bit more clearer about what is going on. The film does get alot of credit for looking very visually impressive with the film retaining the typical Nolan look but at the same time all of the color has been drained from the film with the film looking mostly brown when things from around the time that this film is set would have had lots of blues and greens things that would make the film more colorful and while keeping things mostly brown is more realistic that doesn't make it a good fit for this film as for a film you do want things to be more colorful as your film is fighting for the attention of audiences with several other films and whilst this film doesn't look half as bad as Moana 2026 does with it's lack of color it does still look really bland this is despite the fact that the film does have some visually impressive sets and mostly uses practical effect as is the case with alot of Christopher Nolan films and to be fair to this film the films sets do look really good in there own right.
In a move that was to expected this film does cover the topic of war and not only that it does show you the effects that war can have both to the person fighting in it and there family and to those that suffered because of it. As we do get to see the aftermath of the Trojan War and how the Greeks were perceived by many people as alot of them hated the Greek as they killed there husbands and sons and this is something that we do get to see in the film through the character of Odysseus as we get to see him encounter people who at first do seem innocent enough but reveal themselves to be victims of the war that he was fighting in and are victims due to the things that his side id to them which is a unique thing to see in the film. We also get to see how war effects Odysseus as he does try his best to get home and recover his memories all of which turn out to be quite horrid things that he saw in the war with this being something that still does effect alot of people to this very day as the same men and women that come back from a war for sure aren't the same ones that left for the war in the first place as alot of then will suffer from shellshock and alot of them might very well block out all of the horrible things that they either saw or did during the war not because they were horrible but also because of the basic need to survive with this being something that we do see in the film and the film is all the more better because of it as it would have been super easy for the makers of this film to glorify war and make it look like this really glamourous thing the fact is it isn't and whilst yes this film it could be argued is a fantasy film the things that the characters expirence and fell there love for each other and alot of there hatred of the war those are all very real things that were all captured beautifully in this film.
Look to be frank here there really is nothing to this film this despite the fact that the film does try to have this deeper meaning by saying that war is bad which is something that we already knew in the first place. With it feeling like that Christopher Nolan is slipping a bit as this man used to make hit film after hit film and while the critics are eating this film up it's not them that's going to be paying to see this film it's the hardworking average joe and well to be frank it feels like the Chris is to be busy palling up to the critics with his movies these days that he's ignoring what the average joe likes about his films in the first place as even his worst early films had something about them that made there stories feel deeper then what they actually are. Whereas here with this film none of that does seem to be coming through as alot of the time it's just the characters talking about nothing important with them briefly being separated with either an action scene or a really good drama scene which again is good for the critics and it is something that some members of the audience might like but alot of the audience won't get what he's trying to say as the message is not only badly done when we do get a message about how bad war is it just doesn't work as we already know that war is bad and yet he seems to think that we don't know that as we get alot of scenes with the characters just telling us how bad war is which is somethin that wouldn't be bad if we just had the one scene in the film telling us but we get several and it's just not that needed as it is something that we knew in the first place with the screen time that those scenes take up being something would have been more more better spent in making the films plot be all the more stronger then what it actually is in the first place.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly two hours and forty four minuets and thirty one seconds. Which for any film is such a painfully long running time for this film t have and you really do feel it as you very easily could have gotten this film down to two hours and not lose anything that's actually important to the plot of the film as alot of this films scenes do feel like filler scenes when the film really didn't need any kind of filler in it as this is a story that doesn't demand it be that long in the first place and yet for one reason or another the makers of this film thought this film needed to be almost three hours long however tho the film does have more then enough plot there to cover that amount of running time in the first place. Even with this extended running time this film still doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as the film doesn't take the time to fully develop it's plot as instead we got alot of painfully drawn out scenes with characters just talking which don't get me wrong is great for drama but it eats up so much of the films running time that the film can't fully develop its plot when the makers of this film should have been more focused on giving the plot things that make it feel more well developed instead it's clear as day that they makers of this film cared more about giving this film pointless filler scenes that they plot development. This is something that does also effect the films character development as well as again due to there being alot of drawn out scene with characters just talking which is something that could have been used to give the films characters some actual character development the makers of this film don't take that chance as instead of alot of the time they just about the Trojan War and that's really it and that's not enough to justify this film being as long as it is with it being made clear as day that the makers of this film cared more about talking about the Trojan War then they did about giving the characters there much needed character development but I really will admit that this film really does have some really bad pacing t it tho.
So now then as this a drama that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual drama that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well the in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual drama that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was I all honesty really good. The films drama was quite frankly the best part of the film as that's where we get to see just how good that alot of this films actors are with all of this films drama feeling earned and not forced which is something that it very easily could have done given the subject matter and given the fact that Christopher Nolan has made great dramas before it only makes sense this film has some great drama in it as he really does know how to give us some good drama in all of his films. With the best piece of drama in the whole entire film being a scene where Penelope is yelling at Telemachus as this is a scene where we get to see just how good both Tom and Anne are with the pair of them acting the living heck out of that scene with the scene in question being about Telemachus trying to find his his father as Penelope doesn't want to loose her son due to the fact that she believes that her husband is dead which given the fact that there had just been a war that he hasn't come home from yet with the scene itself being so good that is easily the best scene in the film as it is a piece of drama that does feel very character driven and while the film is classed more as an action film due to the fact that there is more dramatic scenes in he film its easily more of a drama then an action film with the rest of the films drama being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
SPOILERS END HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overall this is a film that is hard to judge as while the die hard Christopher Nolan fans will eat this film it's also a film that is hard to imagine doing all that well at box office due to the fact that we do have other films right now like Toy Story 5 and yes still Obsession doing really well at the box office with the film itself being one of the ore weaker Christopher Nolan films out there right now in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review which does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
