Supergirl 2026 Film SPOILER FILLED Film Review
The DCU got of to the right start with last years Superman film however there is alot of pressure for this film to be as good due to the fact that it doesn't have the DCU producer James Gunn ether writing or directing this film. Adding to the pressure is the fact that the only live action film appearance for Supergirl was a pretty cheesy film that came out in the eighties and well the film has just been released and so then join me as I give you my SPOILER FILLED review of the film that sees Supergirl take centre stage with the film in question being called simply just "Supergirl" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when a young girl comes asking for her help Kara must go on a quest to track down and kill the person that killed the young girls family whilst also seeking to heel a loved one of her own. Now then interms of I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. Look to be frank this films plot isn't the best that it could have been with it being a comic book plot in every sense of the word and while this is something that does work for the world of the comics for the film the plot should have been alot more tighter and alot more better done overall. To give this film some credit it's plot is alot ore different from alot of the comic books films that are coming out there as it's plot is one that is the kind of plot that you would want to see in comic book movie as it's a plot that doesn't take it self to seriously but at the same time it takes itself seriously enough that you do end up buying into it with this films plot knowing full well that it's comic book plot and for better for worse it does stay well within those realms however tho while the main bulk of the film is Kara trying to help this girl there is another plot point which was cute when it was done in Superman but by now it does start to feel like that the makers of this film are starting to push this character down our throats and it is something that will be discussed later on in this review as the character is actually a huge part of the plot of this film with this films plot being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El / Supergirl , Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem Of The Yellow Hills. Also starring in this film is David Krumholtz as Zor-El , Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze , David Corenswet as Kal-El / Clark Kent / Superman , Ferdinand Kingsley as Elias Knoll , Diarmaid Murtagh as Drom Baxton and Aquaman star Jason Momoa as Lobo.
Now then interms of I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty pretty good. Whilst Milly has been got alot unneeded hate online for the fact that they deem her to be ugly when she really isn't well the one thing that those same people will NOT be able to hate her is her acting as much like she did in the early episodes of Hose Of the Dragon she really does nail it in this film with her giving s a really good performance but sadly the same thing cannot be said for Eve Ridley as she is bit on the wooden side. With the best actor in this film being none other then Milly Alcock as she really is a joy to watch as this character and i'm not just saying because of the fact that i've seen in House Of Dragon it's being said because it's true with her really nailing the essence of this version of Kara as this version of the character is one that is meant to be always drunk and is always willing to do the craziest thing possible think Captain Jack Sparrow except Supergirl can flu and you'll get the idea and this is something that Milly does give us and yet at the same time she'll give you a look that lets you know that her character has seen things that none f the other characters in this film have done and while Jason Momoa is going to be a fan favorite as Lobo after this film it's Milly that really does end up being the best actor in this film due to the fay that she really does understand this character with this being something that really does shine through in her performance. With the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films absolutely anything to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is Digital Domain , Framestore , Industrial Light & Magic and Legacy Effects. Now then interms of I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. All you have to do is look at what effects companies are working on this film to know full well that we are getting some really good effects and for the most part that is exactly what we get and while Industrial Light & Magic aren't as good as they were in the nines as companies like Scanline and Weta are becoming more better then do do a really good in this film the same thing is also for all the effects companies involved with this film as they all do turn in some really good effects in this film. That being said tho there are a few dodgy looking effects in this film like for example there are some spaceships that do a look a little bit unfinished and alot of the background VFX do look le they could have had more time dedicated to them to make them all be the best that can be but when it does come to the big effects n the film those are the ones that stand out and rightfully so as those are the ones that are more important to the film but in giving more time and energy into making those bigger effects be the best that they can be the makers of this film are letting the smaller scale effects slip through cracks and sadly it is those small scale effects that are bringing down the quality of this films effects as alot of them do look like the kind of effects that you'd see in a video game cutscene alot of the time and yet if the makers of this film did dedicate more time to those effects then the film would have more good looking effects in it.
SPOILERS START HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Much like with Superman this film puts Krypto front and centre of the film and while it wasn't as annoying in that film as that was the start of this new cinematic universe here it is something that really wasn't needed. As we'd already seen one Kryptonian obsess over this dog just one film prior we don't need to see a second one do the exact same thing and why it does make sense that Kara would obsess over him in this film due to the fact that he is her dog and he is the last thing that she got before being sent to earth that doesn't mean that her whole reason for wanting to help this girl out is just get the cure for the arrow that Krem stuck him with as all that does is make her look like a selfish character and while of course her going after him to get the cure does make a good person at heart the fact that it took Krypto to put his own life on the line to get her to anything negates that. All of this does make it feel like someone at Warner Bros or at DC Studios wants a dog as they are just cramming Krypto down our throats and heck they've even just announced an animated series based on the character it's all getting to be a bit to much with it feeling like that they are trying Krypto there version of Grogu where they expect us the audience to go aww just because he did something that's somewhat cute and it just won't work with it only working with Grogu because it was something that we hadn't seen before and even then it was something that started to ware itself thin pretty quickly and with Warner Bros shoving Krypto down our throats it is something that will happen as the audience will catch on to what there doing and will openly reject it as they don't like being told what to like and while Krypto is a good character the whole film doesn't always need to revolve around him and with Supergirl being in the next Superman film you just know that the makers of that fil are going to find a way to make him a crucial part of that films plot again.
Unlike 1984 Supergirl this film des at the very least try to be a good film as it does have alot of things going for it like for example it has likable actors in it and it has some mostly good CGI. However tho the best thing in the film and the thing that people will remember most about this film is Lobo as they actually did the main man some justice with him not only being pitch perfectly cast with him being played by Jason Momoa but they managed to get the character himself down perfectly with him being this arrogant a*shole who thinks that he's best there is in any given situation and wouldn't be afraid to let you know it and that is exactly who Lobo is in this film and its something that does make this film all the more better. As it does show us the audience that the makers of this film do know how to tackle little known comic book characters and have them be accurate to whom they are in the comics which is something that then makes you wonder why alot of the films other characters outside off maybe Supergirl feel like first draft characters as characters like Krem and Ruthye are left feeling like undercooked characters and heck even Supergirl at times does feel like an afterthought in her own movie and this is something that is a huge issue with the film as the film does have all of these characters that it wants to include but it can't dedicate enough time to them like for example the space pirates that rob Kara and Ruthye near the start of the film the very fact that they are space pirates is a good idea but the film doesn't go as far as it cold have dine with them with the characters being dropped just as quickly as there were introduced. Whereas with the 1984 film almost every single character that they introduced in that film played some role no matter how small it was in the plot of them whereas you could loose about half of the films characters and the plot of the film wouldn't be affected by it as alot of them are just pointless additions to the film.
Like what alot of MCU films still have alot of the time the DCU does have a problem when it comes to its villains and it's something that wasn't that noticeable in Superman as they there smartly used Lex Luthor and therefor they didn't have to give alot of time to him as a character. Here tho they do use a very little known almost obscure villain called Krem Of The Yellow Hills and yet the makers of the film don't really give us the audience a reason to want Kara to beat him outside of the fact that he poisoned Krypto and heck we don't even get to find out why he's a villain in the first place with him just being included in the film as the film is an adaptation of the comic book "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" with there being no thought into how to make him a good villain. Look to be frank this kind of villain is one that would have worked ten or even twenty years ago but now after we've had Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker and we've had Thanos all of whom were really good villains it is something that des make Krem feel like a throwback character but not in a good way but to give him credit tho he is a better villain then Selena was in Supergirl 1984 as Krem does have some menace and isn't just attacking Supergirl because of the fact that they both have a crush on the same boy but at the same time tho they don't really give Krem an evil plan in the first place which just makes you wonder why they even had him be the main villain when his role could have been played by quite literally any other character in the film and it would have just as much sense if the maker of this film wanted to make him a good villain for Kara then they had to go all in as it's not just enough to have him using Kryptonite they should have made him psychologically torture Kara and make her doubt herself and have blame herself for Krypton blowing up as that would have made him a good villain which in turn would have made Kara a better character as she would have struggled to over come him.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and forty two minuets and fifty five seconds. The fact that this film is as short as it is is still a pretty big problem despite the film having a really solid running time as the film does have alot of characters in it and it can't have all of these characters in it and given them all equal amounts of screen time and still tell a good story with this short running time feeling like it was forced upon the makers of the film by Warner Bros so that they could fit in more screenings of the film whereas this is a film that should have been well over two hours long with the film itself having more then enough plot there to cover that amount of running time n the first place. The film even doesn't use its running time all that wisely as the film doesn't take the time to fully develop it's plot with the film making it hard to work just what the main plot of the film is as they switch between Kara wanting to get a cure to Krypto within three days to Kara and Ruthye wanting to get revenge on Krem for the death of Ruthye's parents with the film not dedicating enough running time to either one to make either plot feel fully formed as while both plots are serviceable in this film they still needed to be more developed in order to make them great with the makers of this film being more focused on shoving Krypto down our throats then they in giving us a more well thought out plot. This is also an issue when it comes to films characters as all but Kara and maybe Ruthye don't get any form of character development as the film has so many characters to fit in to the film that eventually something is going to give way and fall threw the cracks which in this case is the films character development as while Kara does learn to fully except earth as her new home hence why she's going to be in Man Of Tomorrow and Ruthye learns the bare bones of revenge isn't a good thing no one else in this film grows as a character with it being obvious that the makers of this film makers of this film cared more about giving us some very quick Superman scenes then they are in giving us well thought out and well developed characters but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. Whilst the film does have alot of really good action scenes in it the thing that lets down this films action is the editing as the films makes lots of cuts during its action scenes and at times it does get so bad that it does become hard to tell just what its going on with a good example of this being a fight scene early between Krem and Elias where it starts out with Elias firmly winning but then after several cuts it's suddenly Krem and something like that is something that did need to be made more clearer as it's a key plot point in the film. With the best action scene being the end fight scene as we finally get to see Kara don the full Supergirl costume something which she had outright refused to do at several points in the film but here does put it in and she does become the hero that Ruthye believes her to be with Kara unleashing the full extent of her powers of on Krem all the while Lobo and Ruthye herself are taking out Krem' henchmen withy it being here in this action scene where the editing does calm itself down which does allow us to see what's happening on the screen instead of having these fact cuts all throughout it with the scene being made even more better by the fact that we get to see Lobo just being his usual self which really is something that will always be alot of fun in any action scene with the rest of this films action scenes being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
SPOILERS END HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overall this film is alot more better then the 1984 Supergirl film in alot of ways but that film is better then this film in one and that's that fact that that film knew that it was a bad film and wasn't afraid to be that where as this film is trying to hard to hard to be a good film that at times it does forget to fun film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review wand as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 6.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards .
