Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie Film Review
There is denying the fact that back in the nineties Power Rangers was awsome and while it was still going on until 2023 none of the other seasons of the show caught the magic that that first season had. With the show selling toys by the millions and earning huge ratings on TV it was only a matter time before the Rangers took there fight to the big screen and in 1995 that's exactly what happened as we got the first theatrically released Power Rangers movie and so then join me as I review the film that is the first of two non canon Power Rangers film with the only canon film being Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie with the film in question being called simply just "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when Zordon is attacked and left for dead and there command centre is destroyed by a new villain called Ivan Ooze it's up to the rangers to travel to a distant planet to get there powers restored and hopefully defeat Ivan Ooze before it's far to late. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. Look to be frank nobody goes into anything that's related to Power Rangers expecting the plot to be good as you mainly go into it expecting the plot to be pretty bad and basic at best. While that is something that does work for a weekly episode of the show as one episodes bad plot will be forgotten about by the next week and yet here in this film we do get a plot that whilst yes it is pretty bad as it full to the brim with the cheese that is all over the first few seasons of the show it is still a plot that if you go into it knowing that your going to be getting something pretty bad does become suddenly quite enjoyable. There is a major downside to this films plot that is quite hard to ignore and that is the fact that it does feel like an extended episode of the show with the film even following the same plot structure as the show with the characters first in there non rangers forms meeting the bad guy fighting them and then morphing into the Power Rangers where they then take them on and win only for them to grow big and the rangers have to defeat them again with the only new thing that this film added to that structure was the time bomb of Zordon dying and even that gets ignored with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as we as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Karan Ashley as Aisha Campbell , Johnny Yong Bosch as Adam Park and Steve Cardenas as Rocky DeSantos. Also starring in this film is Jason David Frank as Tommy Oliver , Amy Jo Johnson as Kimberly Hart , David Yost as Billy Cranston , Paul Schrier as Farkas "Bulk" Bulkmeier , Jason Narvy as Eugene "Skull" Skullovitch , Gabrielle Fitzpatrick as Dulcea , Julia Cortez as Rita Repulsa , Jamie Croft as Fred Kelman , Peter Mochrie as Mr. Kelman , Kerrigan Mahan as the voice of Goldar , Robert L. Manahan as the voice of Zordon , Robert Axelrod as the voice of Lord Zedd , Barbara Goodson as the voice of Rita Repulsa , Richard Steven Horvitz as the voice of Alpha 5 , Martin G. Metcalf as the voice of Mordant and Paul Freeman as Ivan Ooze.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. The fact that this films acting is as good as it is is still something that's quite shocking as much like with the plot you don't go into Power Rangers expecting good acting and while this films acting isn't going to be winning any OSCARS it's still alot more better then what you would get in an episode of the show with this being due to the fact that alot of the actors in this film are returning from the show and therefor have that expirence of playing there respective characters. With the best actor in the whole entire film being Robert Axelrod as the voice of Lord Zedd as while the character doesn't get alot to do in the film with both him and Rita being written out pf the film pretty quickly he does still sound like a menacing character with Robert giving him a voice that does make him sound like a genuine threat to the Rangers with this being something that does help to sell you on Lord Zedd as a credible threat it's just a shame that the films writes him out of the film pretty quickly as seeing him and Rita team up with Ivan Ooze to take on the Rangers would be been more then enough to justify them being in this film and it would have given Robert more of a time to shine with the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors alot to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does help to lower the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is VIFX , Optical Illusions , Digital Magic Company , Sessums Engineering , Wolf Drum Imaging , Visual Concept Engineering , OCS/Freeze Frame/Pixel Magic and Pollar Productions. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty pretty bad. As while this films CGI has aged like milk it was something that did look kind of good back in 1995 but yeah it is kind of hard to defend just how bad that this films CGI looks especially as since using the shows tried and true method for there megazord battles of having a man in a suit not only works better will age alot more better then the effects do in this film. However tho to be fair to this film CGI back in 1995 wasn't anywhere near as good nor as far advanced as it is today with this film mostly using very little known effects companies to do all of the effects for the film which was most likely done because of the fact that Haim Saban is known for always doing things on the chap and odds are that these were the cheapest effects companies at that time period. Yet it's not all doom and gloom when it comes to the films VFX as while Ivan Ooze looks terrible when he goes full on CGI with the same thing also being true for the Rangers Zords Zordon himself does look pretty good with it being made crystal clear that however did the effects for him pain alot more attention into getting him right then they did into making the films other effects looking actually good.
As is to be expected there is a huge visual upgrade from the show to this film with us getting a new look for Zordon and a new look for the command centre as a whole. These are things that do work as while having the minimalist look for the command centre works well enough for the TV show which had the budget of a shoestring and therefor they couldn't afford to make it look as good as they might have wanted to here in he film they do have the budget to go all out of with it's design and it is something that does look for the brief time that we get to see it in the film with it looking very futuristic and something that's not of this earth think of the design that they used for it in the 2017 film but with a nineties look and you'll get the idea. The same thing is also true for Zordon himself as while he is still psychically played by an actor which in this case is Nicholas Bell when he's in the tube he's still a fully CGI character and while he didn't look that bad in the show as his lips barely moved and when they did they were barely even in sync where as here you can see that his lips are more in sync and while it would have been nice if the makers of this film did use the designs for both Zordon and the command centre that they used in the show those designs would add a look of cheapness to the show whereas these more upgraded versions wok well enough for the film. Heck even Rita and Zedds moon palace gets a bit of visual upgrade as well with it looking less like something that was made cheaply and quickly and more like something that you ant to see in a feature length film, with the only thing that doesn't get any kind of improvement being the morphing scene as instead of having the one used in the show they instead just have one that was obviously filmed in a quarry somewhere and don't bother to come up with anything new or creative.
While it does make some sort of sense to keep on cutting back to Ivan Ooze and to Zordon as they are both tied to the main plot of the film we don't need to keep on cutting back to see Fred and his dad as those scenes do slow the film down alot. With it feeling like that those scenes were only in the film to give the characters of Bulk and Skull something to do in the film as outside of the opening skydiving sequence those two characters might as well as not even be in the film in the first place which in this case wouldn't be a bad thing as while there not annoying characters as they are just as funny as they are in the show but in the show you can get away with cutting back to them and there plot due to the amount of Japanese footage that you have to use where as here in this film as its all original footage we don't get to see them all that much and that's great as there not important to the films plot. The same thing is also true for Fred and his Dad as they aren't key characters for the films plot and yet the film does keep on cutting back to them and all of the time it makes no sense as all it does is take away screen time from the characters that we actually want to see in this film the Power Rangers themselves if Fred was a character in the show then it would make sense then to keep on showing him as he would have that bult in fanbase but he's not and heck it would even make some sort of sense if they used this movie to introduce him as a character and have him come back into the show as a semi regular character yet they don't therefor there is no reason for this character to keep on being in this film as all he is therefor is just further hit home the point that this film is basically Tommy's movie and that's it.
Speaking of Tommy he really is the main character of this film as it's him that end up saving alot of the Rangers when they are in danger, its him that gives them the big motivational speech near the end of the film and it's him that ends up saving all of the kids in Angel Grove. Look having him be the main guy that all of the rangers turn to in a fight is something that does make sense as he was the most popular character at that time but at the same time tho Kimberly was there alot lot longer then Tommy was and even in the early days of the show could more then hold her own in a fight and yet here she can't go that long without screaming his name and while Billy was never the best fighter of the original five when the show first started he was getting better and yet he doesn't do all that much damage to his foes in this film its always Tommy that gets alot of the ending shots. The films villain Ivan Ooze he was a good villain in the film he did what not alot of the other villains had managed to do at that time and that's break into the command centre and cause some real damage to the Rangers as he broke there connection to the morphing grid and while he did capitalize on that by destroying the rangers himself something which he very easily could have done he does manage to do what both Lord Zedd and Rita have failed to do and that's take over Angel Grove and while he doesn't really have an end goal in mind this is something that doesn't stop him from being an interesting character as this character was never meant to have an end goal in mind he was just meant to cause havoc and he did do exactly that with the him being just as over the top as both Zedd and Rita were with the only difference being that he could back up his threats due to how strong he is.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and thirty five minuets and forty eight seconds. Which is pretty much the exact running time that you would expect a film like this one to have as the film is essentially just one long episode of the show with there being nothing to separate this film from an episode of the show as they both still do follow the same story telling style from the show and therefor the film really didn't need to have that long as of a running time and heck everything is already set up in the show and therefor when this film starts it can get right into the plot and not have to explain a single thing with this film even having the right amount of plot there to cover that amount of running time in the first place. However tho this film really doesn't use its running time all that wisely as the film doesn't take the time to fully develop its plot with this being due to the fact that even tho the film does indeed devote alot of the time to its plot and the film does focus on its plot alot of the time the film does also cut back to earth just as much when we don't really need to see all that much of what's happening on earth as we don't need to know that Fred and his Dad are doing as the only things that we need to see on earth is Ooze looking for his zords and to check in Zordon and that's it and yet as the makers of the film seem to think that we want to see more of Fred it means that we do get alot of scenes with him all of which to take away screen time that could have been better used in developing the films plot. This is something that does also effect the films character as while the show was never all that big n giving the Rangers character development they would still get it and while it does make sense that they wouldn't get it in this film as they would have had several episodes of the show in which to get it the same thing cannot be said for the rest of the films characters as we know just as much about all of this films characters coming out of the film then we did coming into the film and while it would of course have been hard to give someone like Ivan Ooze character development it wouldn't have been impossible but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that really does meant that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. While alot of people do think that the opening unmorphed fight at the building sight is pretty lame I personally thought that it was a really fun as we do get to some really cool moves being done and while the Ninja Power fight in the jungle is alot more better interms of having an action scene that's just there to get you in the mood for what you can expect the action in a fully American produced Power Rangers to look like it does its job pretty good. Yet that's not the best action scene in the film as the best action scene in the film is the big zord fight at the end as while yes it is big CGI mess of a scene we still do get to see lots of really cool action with the other rangers not only trying to save the kids but also trying to help each other out as well with that action scene even doing a good job of selling us on just how powerful that Ivan Ooze is as it takes them a good while to just defeat ONE of his zords and when Ivan takes control of the other even the Megazord has a tough time trying to defeat him it only being when the rangers get the idea to go into space and let an on coming comet destroy Ivan do they finally beat even if its done by the kicking Ivan in his Oozes with the rest of the films action being just as fun and very the top as this one was in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall while Power Rangers 2017 might be the last Power Rangers theatrically released film and while Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie is the only one that is actually canon to the show this film not only for myself but for alot of people is still the best of the bunch as it is a really fun film that gives you everything that you want to see in a Power Rangers movie and really isn't afraid of being a Power Rangers movie either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 6 out of 10 from me.
Now then ass for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys an girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
