Charlie's Angels 2000 Film Review
It's not an uncommon thing for a classic TV show to get remade into a movie but what is fairly uncommon is for that remake to be a direct continuation of the show in question. This is something that is very much the case with the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today as while this film is spawned from the classic show of the same name it also spawned it's own sequel a kind of reboot film and a 2011 TV series reboot it is a film that not that many people remember or if they do then it's not a fondly remembered film and so then join me as I review the film that really likes to show off just how beautiful it's three leading ladies are with the film in question being called simply just "Charlie's Angels" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when a billionaire is believed to be kidnapped the Angels have to find and stop his latest invention for being used for evil before it's far to late. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. While the films plot is something that could yes be described as being quite cheesy that is something that could also be applied to the show as well and with this film meant to be taking place in the same fictional world as the show it would therefor make sense for the plot of the film to be just as cheesy as a plot for an episode of the show would be. This is something that can however be seen as being both an advantage and a disadvantage as it would be an advantage in the sense that it would show that the makers of this film were indeed fans of the show to a degree that they are crafting a plot that you could very easily see as being the plot for an episode of the show however that is also where it becomes a disadvantage as while having a cheesy plot works great for the show it's not something that necessarily works for the film as for the film you do want something that does yes feel like the show but is also epic and serious enough to taken seriously as the plot for a movie and that's not always something that this films plot does give us with it feeling more like an episode of the show rather then feature film alot of the time. With the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Cameron Diaz as Natalie Cook and one of this films producers Drew Barrymore as Dylan Sanders. Also starring in this film is Lucy Liu as Alex Munday , Bill Murray as John Bosley , Sam Rockwell as Eric Knox , Kelly Lynch as Vivian Wood , Back To The Future star Crispin Glover as The Thin Man , Matt LeBlanc as Jason Gibbons , Luke Wilson as Pete Kominsky , Tim Curry as Roger Corwin , Tom Green as Chad , Halloween H20 star LL Cool J as Mr. Jones , Melissa McCarthy as Doris , Sean Whalen as Pasqual , Karen McDougal as Roger Corwin's Girlfriend and John Forsythe as the voice of Charles "Charlie" Townsend.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty pretty good. The fact that we even got OK acting in this film at all is quite the achievement as by all rights this films acting should have been really bad given the fact that the director MCG doesn't usually have good acting in his films and the fact that the show that the films is based off of wasn't known for having great acting either however that was exactly what we got in this film as alot of this films did turn in some really good performances and while there are of course some bad performances like for example Tom Green is super annoying to the point of being unfunny and unlikable in this film when his character should have been really funny and really likable and Kelly Lynch is just sort of there as she does nothing interesting with her character. With the films best actor in the whole entire film being a three way tie between Cameron Diaz , Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu as all three leading ladies are really good in this film with really all three of them turning some really good performances that do have the effect of making this film be that little bit more better with the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none f this films actors absolutely anything to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does help to lower the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
While it is hard to say n how good the shows characters were interms of this film there characters were pretty decent for the most part. With all three main girls being basic characters as they all do have basic characters types with Natalie being the dumb , Dylan the loner and Alex the smart one with all three girls not really straying to far from that type and to be be fair this is something that does work for this film as this film is meant to be a dumb action comedy and therefor you don't need your main characters to have anything more then just te one personality type in order for them to work would it have helped the film they were better handled yes of course it would but was it needed no. However all three girls get the gold star treatment when compared to quite literally any other character in the film as none of the films have much going for them personality wise so much so that alot of the characters do fall into the background alot of the time with it being hard to remember anything memorable that characters like for example Vivian and Eric did in the film and they are meant to the films main villains and yet they are treated more like an afterthought in the film with the same thing also being true for the character of John Bosley altho he is there to mainly be the comic relief character which is something that does make sense but then at the same time they also have Natalie also kind of fill that role so it makes no sense for John Bosley to also be the comedy relief character even tho Bill Murray does pull it off alot more better then what Cameron Diaz does. To be frank this films characters is something that could have been fixed if the makers of this film showed some level of passion for wanting to make a decent film as it does come across as them treating the films characters like an afterthought to explosions and fight scenes.
Whereas the original show was always more of ensemble piece with all three main girls being the main character in any given episode. Here because of the fact that she is a producer on the film the makers of this film make Drew Barrymore's character the main character and have everyone else only be good when she's around them and she's not around them there completely useless, this is something that is quite annoying to see in the film as it just screams of the producer wanting to make herself look good at the expense of the film when it would have worked all the more better if we got to see all three girls be equally as great regardless of if Dylan is around them or not as that would have stayed true to the show and the films setup of three girls being tough as nails and being hard to work together. A good comparison to this one would the Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel crossover episode "Dimensions In Danger" where they state quite fully that all of the past ranger teams trust Tommy Oliver with it even being him that saves the day and defeats the big bad of the episode when it would have made more sense for it to be the current team to defeat the big bad with this film and that episode having the one thing in common that being that they put the needs of one character above the needs of everything else as by all rights this team should have been able to beat up all of the villains without Dylan's help and yet because of the fact that they can't fully function without her they just can't, it would be one thing if she was just the main character of this film and the second film mainly focused on another character but she's the main character of both films which is something that does scream egotistical as it doesn't work in this film due to it going against the core set up of the film that being three tough girls who can handle themselves in a fight.
Unlike the original show which was more action focused and more often that not played things super straight. This film does have alot more comedic elements in it with the film being classed as being an action comedy however with that in mind this film isn't all that funny with alot of the films jokes either being really cringy or really dated with there being few jokes that are actually funny with a good example of a slightly funny joke in this film being the running joke that Natalie thinks that she can dance and when the film cuts to her POV there are people cheering her on but when it cuts back to the real world it's dead silent. That is a slightly funny joke but it's one that would have been more funnier if they took it to the extreme or even added in a scene where the other angels just roll there eyes at her or something like that as it would show that the makers of this film are in on the joke and know that yes it's bad joke but there still going to have fun with it and do some weird things with it yet they don't really do anything with it which is something that does make the joke feel a bit undercooked, there is another decent joke near the start of the film where they make fun of the fact that TV shows getting turned into movies is common thing whilst also being a movie that's based off of a TV show which was decent and the film doesn't hold on it that much but those are quite possibly the only two funny jokes in the film. With the film being an action comedy the film does have more of a focus on the action side of things with it feeling like there's an action scene every ten minuets when the balance should have been more evenly split with both of these eating up time that could have ben used to make the films main villains and the main mystery interesting and not feel like an afterthought.
Whilst this isn't necessarily a bad thing as the original show was once known as "Jiggle TV" this film does have alot of shots and alot of scenes that are purely to show of how good looking the three main leads are. With this being something that didn't really gave to do as we the audience already know that all three women are knockouts yet the film for whatever reason decides to play up this aspect of the show which fair enough ight be more true to the show as there as there is a good chance that the original show might have done that in alot of it's episodes as well but there it felt like they were going over board with it like they were trying to get teenage boys to watch the film when if they just made the film good that is something that would have happened anyway. To be fair to this film tho this is a fun filled film to watch as it is a film that knows full well just what kind of film that it is and isn't afraid to be exactly that with the film having alot of moments and jokes that do help to make the film be more fun like for example the opening joke about TV shows being turned into a movies that is something that does show you that the makers of this film do know that they are making a bad film and are just having fun with it and that fun is something that does leap of the screen would it be helpful if the film had better written villain yes of course it would but this isn't that type of film and it was never going to be as this is the type of film that is just there to be entertaining to give you some laughs and show you some cool action scenes and that's it with those elements making what could have been a plain old bad film be a film that whilst yes it is still bad is also alot of fun to watch.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and thirty eight minuets and twenty four seconds. Which even for this kind of film is a bit on the short ide as while yes this film technically a continuation of the original show it does still have to set up the three main leads and the films villains and still tell a good story and while the film doesn't need to be that long in order to do that it still need to be at the very least five or ten minuets longer with this film having the right amount of plot to cover that amount of running time, this is a film that does know that it has to basically have all of its scenes be about advancing the films plot and to be fair this is something that this film does well enough as no scene in this film does feel like filler. However tho this film still doesn't use its running time all that wisely due to the fact that the film doesn't take the time that it has to fully develop its ploy with the film instead being alot more focused on making sure that we know that all three of the main females characters are beautiful women then it is in giving us a well thought out plot. This is something that does kind of effect the films character development as well as the film does leave no scenes where the characters can get there development but at the same time tho this is the type of the film where you don't need to think about what's happening and therefor you don't need the characters to get any of character development for it to work as you just need the characters to be there usual selfs and the film would would work just fine but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With the films action being where the film does get to shine it's brightest due to the fact that we do get some really fun fight scenes with the girls in the film with all three girls trading in guns for martial arts which is something that make the action in the film seem a little bit more dangerous in a way as now the girls could get killed before then even land the first punch on a villain and it is something that does give Lucy Liu a chance to shine as a possible action star with her actually being very highly skilled in martial arts with her having studied the more weapons based Kali-Eskrima-Silat as well as Tang Soo Do and Karate with her being able to put alot of those skills to good use in this film. With the best action scene in the whole entire film being the films third act as that's when we get to see all three girls just kick alot of butt and beat up several bad guys both using martial arts and whatever nearby weapon they can get there hands on with this being something that does give us a chance to see what each of the films main actors are like in a fight like for example with Cameron Diaz being very tall she uses her legs alot where as Drew Barrymore is more quick and agile and Lucy Liu is more focused with her mainly going for the parts where it will hurt the most with all three of those being something that does fit there respective characters perfectly well with the rest of the films action being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall out of the two films this film is ten times more better then the the 2019 film as this film knows full well not only who it's main target audience is mainly going to be but also just what type of film that is as well with that being something that really does make this film alot more fun to watch then the 2019 film could ever hope to be in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well all of the bad thigs that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand d score of exactly a 6 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great the official Star Wars fandom wiki page this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
