Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret Of The Ooze Film Review
The Ninja Turtles are characters that alot of us either grew up with or know about due to them being in alot of movies and TV shows. With there first live action movie still being there best one ever live action or animated and and yet it's the films sequel that i'm going to be talking to you all about today as this film is actually turning thirty five years old this year and while this film isn't as good as the first one is it's easily better Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III is and so then join me as I review the film that parents groups fought to have the turtles not use there hard to buy weapons but was still OK with them advocating an all pizza diet with the film in question being called simply just "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret Of The Ooze" enjoy.
The plot of this film is not long after the turtles have defeated The Shredder and the Foot Clan the turtles still find themselves without a home and have to fight The Shredder once again after he gets his hands on the mutagen that mutated them in the first place. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad with the films plot being one that's quite clearly more dumbed down when compared to the more darker plot of the first film but this films plot is still something that does still work really well as it does still feel true to the spirit of that first film as the films plot does feel cinematic enough to be the plot of a movie when it very easily could have felt like the plot of an episode of the 1987 TMNT animated show and yet this films plot does oddly feel more weaker then the plot of the first film as there is so little time spent on the plot and making be as strong as it could be before the film reaches it's third act when the film should have spent alot more time in making this plot feel alot more epic and feel alot more personal then what it is as this is a plot about The Shredder wanting to get revenge on the turtles and yet the plot does feel very bland and generic with it being make obvious that the makers of this film really weren't fans of either the animated show or the comics and were just making this movie to get a paycheck with the plot of this film not really being really rather entertaining and not is it really rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Brian Tochi as the voice of Leonardo , Laurie Faso as the voice of Raphael and Robbie Rist as the voice of Michelangelo. Also starring in this film is Adam Carl as the voice of Donatello , Paige Turco as April O'Neil , David Warner as Professor Jordan Perry , Ernie Reyes Jr. as Keno , Kevin Clash as Splinter , Toshishiro Obata as Tatsu , Michael McConnohie as the voice of Tatsu , François Chau as The Shredder , David McCharen as the voice of The Shredder , Kevin Nash as Super Shredder and Frank Welker as the voices of Tokka and Rahzar.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. With it being made obvious that the films actors are trying there best in this film but for one reason or another the film just can't get it together acting wise as alot of the newer actors just feel miscast at best or are just straight up hamming it up at it's worst and the films original actors whilst they do have a better grip on there characters just feel like there being held back and aren't being allowed to be as good as we know that they can be with the best actor in the whole entire film being the voice actors for the turtles as really all four of them could be the best actor in this film and yet all four of them together are just so good in this film with both Brain and Robbie who are of course returning from the first film being just as good as you'd want them to be and while it does take awhile to get used to hearing Laurie Faso as Raphael you do eventually get used to hearing a new voice from him with the only voice that really feels out of place in this film being the voice that Adam Carl give Donatello as he gives him a voice that almost the stereotypical nerdy voice whilst also giving him a hint of sarcasm and it's not something that works and while his performance in the film is indeed really good Corey Feldman was just so much more better as the character in the first film with the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that the script for this film is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to eb in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Character wise this film does fair alot more better then what the next movie would do as here there is some attempt of having the characters actually feel like there old selfs. With this mainly being due to the fact that the writer of the previous film Todd W. Langen returning to write the script for this film which is something that does help as this writer would have had the expirence of writing for this version of the turtles and yet even with this in mind this films characters do feel alot more weaker when compared to how they were done in the previous film with the best example of his being Raphael himself as in the first film yes he was angry all the time but it was explained in that film that his anger comes from the fact that he carries all of his brothers issues on his shoulders and every lose he takes more personally the they do which was something that did allow for character development with the character and yet here it felt like all of the development that he went through in that last movie was for nothing with the same thing being true for Leo as well as again going back to that first movie when Raph was knocked out cold Leo took it the most personally so much so that he kept a constant watch over Raph and was the first one to hug him when he woke and yet here we don't get to see that side of the character with all four turtles still being there likable selfs but lacking any really depth to make them for lack of a better term feel more human with the rest of the films characters be they returning characters or new characters are decently well done with it being made clear that the focus of this film is where it should be that being on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
One of the things that makes the first film stand out all the more when compared to other comic book films is he fac that it's a very dark movie even for a nineties kids film it's really dark as while yes it does borrow things from the 1987 show it borrows alot more things from the original comic books. Where as here in this film due to the fact that parents groups hated the fact that the kids could mimic the violence with the turtles using there weapons which are very rare to find they pretty much strong armed the makers of this film into making this film be more like the 1987 show which does mean that the turtles barely use there weapons with Donnie being the only one to use his weapon in an offensive way during the film as Leo only uses his Katana's very briefly at the start of the film and Raph and Mikey might as well as not even have there weapons in this film and yet those same parents groups where perfectly fine with the characters advocating an all pizza diet something which kids can not only get ahold more easily and is more readily available to them but it's also something that there more likely to want to do as well as kids aren't as dumb as we like to think that they are as if you tell them not to do something there not going to it if the parents where that concerned about there kids being mimicking violence in a kids movie then they should actually parent there kids and not leave it to the movie to do that for them as the turtles using there weapons is something that could have been very useful during several scenes in this film and yet because of the fact that the parents groups didn't want the turtles to use things that would actually be helpful inn there fight against The Shredder it does mean that the turtles end up getting beat up alot more in this film then they did in the first film.
To be fair to this film this film is still alot of fun to watch with the characters having some great interactions with each other. With you being able to tell right away that the makers of this film were having blast in making this film as they do go to these really over the top and borderline campy places with the film all of which do work really well as they do feel like things that these characters would do alot of the time and while the most most over the top moment of the film is quite easily the "Ninja Rap" sequence that is also a good example of just how fun and how kind of tongue in cheek that this film is as it shows that the film isn't afraid to go to those more goofy places and just be a good time whilst also still being a good if somewhat flawed film in it's own right and heck given that the film is getting re-released soon for it's thirty fifth anniversary it would be interesting to see the "Ninja Rap" sequence on the big screen with a bunch of people who might not have seen this film just to see what they thought of it as while it doesn't clash with the more serious tone of that action scene it is something that is borderline comical due to how to over the top that it does go with the film having alot of sequences like that as well like the opening of the film were every person in New York is eating a slice of Pizza seemingly for no reason whatsoever which is something that does let you know just what kind of a film that your in for and that you shouldn't really be taking on this seriously and yet when the film does get serious it does play it really straight which again is something that does work for the film is makes those more serious hit all the more harder.
One has to wonder why the makers of this film chose to use The Shredder again as he was quite clearly killed of at the end of the first movie. Yet here he is at the start of the this movie alive and well with only a scar on his face when it would made more sense for them to use one of the turtles over villains like Krang or Baxter Stockman for example and heck out of those two given this film more scientific theme it would have made alot more sense for them to use Baxter Stockman as then he would be ale to be more tied in with the Professor Jordan Perry like maybe Baxter works for TGRI under Perry and is dead set against them cleaning up there act for one reason or another which granted isn't much of a reason to use the character in the first place but it would sow that the makers of this film re more then willing to use other characters outside of these that have appeared as the main villains in the 1987 show as The Shredder's plan in this film just feels like a let down as he plans to get revenge on the turtles by having them fight these creatures that he was going to have killed due to how dumb they are with him not having any other plan other then that which is something that just doesn't work for the character as his plan in the first film was to corrupt the youth of New York so much so that he would have his own army to do with what he pleases which makes hm look like a credible threat where as here none of that can come across this is despite the fact that the character does have some really well done scenes and yet if the makers of the film did use another character as the main villain of the film then they'd be able to do what they want with them as it would still come across as being a perfectly fine plan for that character but for The Shredder a character that we know can have great plans thanks to the last film here it just felt like a huge step down.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty eight minuets and thirty four seconds. Which to be fair to this film is pretty much the bogstandard running time for quite literally any of these nineties TMNT with the film having more then enough there interms of plot to really cover that amount of running time in the first place yet even so this film really doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as the film really doesn't take the time to fully develop it's plot with the film not really being able to develop it's plot due to it's more family friendly as this is a plot that could work if there was screen time devoted to giving it some development and not spend alot of time on the turtles hijinks in April's apartment as none of those scenes are important to the plot of the film and would have been better used in developing the plot of the film with the film not even taking the film to fully develop it characters as while the turtles , April , Splinter and Shredder don't really need character development due to them being in the first film Kano one of the film new character does as he just becomes friends with the turtles after technically two scenes and even then in the first one he doesn't get a good luck at them or spend time with them with us not even getting the chance too find out anything about his character with the character coming across as being annoying at best as all he does is get in the turtles way or just flat out unlikable at worst something which could have been fixed if the makers of this film devoted some screen time into fully developing him as a character but I really will admit that this film really does have some really bad pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is ana action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With it being made clear as day that the makers of this film put alot more and thought and effort into making this films action as good as it could be and as fun as it could possibly be then they do in quite literally anything else in the film and because of that we do get some really good action scenes and while yes there are some action scenes that aren't as good as they could have been with the action scene at the junkyard with Raphael taking on the Foot Clan by himself as on paper that should have been a really fun action scene and yet it was just lacking that extra special something to make as great as it could have been in the first place with the films best action scene being the films opening action scene as we get to see all of the turtles spouting one liners and taking on a bunch thugs all the while there's the great title song by John Du Prez playing in the background all of which does combine to make that opening action scene a really fun filled action with the rest of the films action scenes being really good as well with the films third act being one that does show that the makers of this film knew that they couldn't top the action in the first films third act and so they instead just made it really campy which was something that did work for that scene in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall whilst this film might not be turning thirty five for a few more months yet it is still a really good film that whilst it might not be as good as the first film was it's easily better then the third film , the 2014 reboot and its 2016 sequel combined as this film at the very least tries to be a good film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad thigs that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 6.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very film well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
