Of Mice And Men 1992 Film Review
There are some books that just stick with you no matter how long ago you read them much like there are some films that will stay with you long after you've finished watching them. With the film that i'm going to talking you all about today being one such example as even tho I first read and saw this film all the way back in high school I still remember the book and I still get emotional thinking about the ending to both the book and the film and well with there being a lack of quality films being made I wanted to remind you all of just how powerful films can be when there done right and so then join me as I review the film that has a real shocker of an ending with the film in question being called simply just "Of Mice And Men" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when George and his mentally disabled disabled friend Lenny find work on a farm during the great depression but trouble soon arises when Lenny's love of all things soft goes a bit to far. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually feature / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good with the makers of this film sticking really closely to the books plot and with the plot of the book being as good as it is it only makes sense that the plot of the film be just as good as well as this is a story that is really easy to make bad as the plot could come across as being two idealistic and not be as truthful as to what things where really like back in those days and yet here in this film everything is very truthful to how things where back in the thirties and because of that this is a plot that does feel authentic and while yes granted this films plot is at best simple and not that well thought out you could also argue that it's like that be nature as afterall we are just following these two guys just go about there day to day lives working on this farm and all of the characters that they interact with which doesn't sound like it's an exciting plot but it is a plot that works due to how simple that it is as that then allows for the situations to be all the more hard hitting and the films amazing ending to be as shocking as it really is with the plot of this film being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is this films co-producer and director Gary Sinise as George Milton and John Malkovich as Lennie Small. Also starring in this film is Ray Walston as Candy , Casey Siemaszko as Curley , Sherilyn Fenn as Curley's Wife , Noble Willingham as The Boss , John Terry as Slim , Richard Riehle as Carlson , Joe Morton as Crooks , Mark Boone Junior as The Bus Driver , Moira Harris as The Girl In The Red Dress and Alexis Arquette as Whitt.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that' actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With all of this films actors turning in some really good performances in this film which is something that was really shocking as this film doesn't really have any well known or at the time they were very little known actors in it and yet you can tell right away that all of this films actors are turning in what could be considered the best performance of their whole careers with it being made obvious that this film director and co-producer Gary Sinise really did know how to get a good performance out of his actors with the films best actor being John Malkovich with the man being unrecognizable as Lenny and yet he manages to make the role his own as it would have been really easy for him to phone in his performance and play this character as he's dumb and nothing more then that but he does instead he plays Lenny like he's an actual human being with his disability being just another part of his character and because of that his performance comes of as being really strong and yet at the same time really heartfelt as well with the acting that's in this film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Where this film well and truly shines is it's in it's characters as all of the films characters feel like there real people. As all of this films characters have wants and dreams of there own be it wanting to get enough money together to buy a farm or just just to survive the next week these characters come across as being real people and alot of that is down to the fact that the makers of this film chose to adapt the book as faithfully as they possibly could have done and while it would be very easy to point to the films main characters as a prime example of this instead i'm going to be point Curley's Wife as she comes across as being the typical flirty character who is just there to cause trouble amongst the workers and that's really it but when you get right down to it you see that there's something there that makes her more then what she is appears to be be as she ran away from home in the hopes that she'll find success in Hollywood and yet she found out that Hollywood was never going to come calling for her and so when she got married she started to feel lonely as she wasn't allowed to talk to anyone except her jealous husband with her character becoming all the more sympathetic because of it as she did have these wants and these dreams of wanting a better life for herself something which we all wanted at somepoint in our lives and while she never got the better life that she believed she deserved with it being the fact that she had these dreams and these ambitions that makes her more human and it's something that modern day Hollywood writers forget to do as there more bothered in giving us the bare bones of a character that they forget to make them fully fleshed out characters with that being something that makes them bland and forgettable.
This film is of course based on the 1937 book and play of the same name written by author John Steinbeck. With the book being ranked as one of the best loved novels in the UK with the book being one of many books that is frequently being dropped from schools and censored and yet at the same time it is still a book that sticks with you heck it was around twenty years ago since I was forced into reading the book for English class and I still remember it to this very day as it is book that does leave a lasting impact on you much like how Joker left a lasting impact on audience members when it was first released in 2019 as that's how powerful words can be when there used by an author that knows what there doing and heck this book is popular that in the same year that the book was released Steinbeck himself adapted the book into a play which then got adapted into a 1939 film with the ending of the book where George is forced to shoot and kill his friend in order to save him from a more painful death being one that was kind of referenced in The Walking Dead when Carol did the same thing to her daughter as that's that's how well done that the ending to this book as and when you have a book that's this good it does deserve to still be taught to kids as how else are they going to learn about what good books can actually do for you as there simply isn't any right now that stick with you and that make you feel emotional and yet that's exactly what this book does with the film being a really faithful retelling of the book with it also borrowing some aspects from the play and yet neither one feels at odds with the other as they are both things that the original author gave the OK to.
If you want to watch a film that will make you cry then this is the film for you as that's exactly what this film does. Both in a happy way when your meant to feel joy and elation for the characters but then it also does it in a sad way when George is not only forced into killing Lennie but also in giving up their shared dream of running a rabbit farm together which was a simple dream but given the time that this film takes place it and the fact that these character are simple people who live paycheck to paycheck it's a dream that's rather fitting and while the two of them do even get a third partner in that dream in the form of Candy it's a still a dream that does seem far away which could be seen as being like the American Dream where if you work hard enough then maybe just maybe you'll be in with a chance of making your dreams come true but like all good things sometimes there are nightmares which in this case does come in the form of Curly a short tempered person who is envious of everyone who is taller then him with him being the films main "villain" of the film in a way as even tho he doesn't have an end goal in mind he does bully the other character and in fact he gets into a fist fight with Lenny when he believe that Lenny was laughing at him when the truth is he was just doing what he saw other people doing and while it could be argued that having his wife die sort of makes sympathetic in a way he was still willing to kill Lenny with a shotgun in his own twisted form of revenge with Curly even making for a really good character in his own right as he shows us that not all bad guys get redeemed at the end of a story and not all b ad guys need to be redeemed either as he is a character that has two many faults for him to be redeemed.
This review has skirted around the subject of Lenny for long enough but you really can't talk about anything to do with this IP and not talk about him. As Lenny is quite literally a gentle giant in that while he's not the smartest tool in the shed that's not anything that he could help with as he is mentally challenged and he doesn't know what alot of other people from that time period might know with George himself even stating that Lennie will just do whatever he's told to do even if it's not in his best interests with this being something that we see playout all throughout the film as George is the only one who looks out for Lenny's best interests as the only thing he tells Lenny to do are things that he tells Lenny to do are thing that will keep them both safe and happy and yet despite his gentle nature Lenny has the strength of a horse something which we do also see in the film as when the two of them start working at the farm it take two farm workers to carry one bag of hey and yet Lenny can carry the same bag of hey with one hand with him not really knowing his own strength which is why he very easily kills soft animals just by stroking them as he does like all things soft be it a fury animal , a dress or someone's hair and yet this is something that alot of the characters don't really understand about Lenny as they treat him as someone who is lesser then him with the few that don't being genuinely kind hearted people and while they all warn him not to go near Curley's Wife it's her that keeps on coming on to him not to try and seduce him or anything like that but for company as like Lenny would be without George she is lonely and that's it and yet because Lenny doesn't really know what he's doing he does end up killing her.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour hour and fifty minuets and forty six seconds. Which is the perfect amount of running time for this film to have as this film does have alot of things to set up and it has to do all of that whilst also still telling a really good story as well something which the film does really well with the film having more then enough plot there to really cover that amount of running time with the film even using it's running time really well as the film does fully develop it's plot which granted isn't that hard to do given the fact that the film does have a really simple plot but it's the fact that the film still does take the time to do it anyway wit alot of the scenes that develop the films plot happening in these more smaller scenes that very easily could have been cut out of the film with this even being true for the films character development as well as while the characters of George and Lenny get alot of the films character development due to the fact that they both do share this one dream which is really sweet as it does add an extra dimension to them with the same thing even being rue for the fact that they only person that they can really trust is each other however tho alot of the films other characters don't really get any kind of character development with the likes of Curly and his wife not really getting anything in the for of character development this is despite the fact that both of them are basically main side characters in the film and yet the only one that we really get to know is his wife and not Curly himself with the rest of the farm workers including Candy not really getting that much time to shine which really is something that really does make sense as they are meant to be side characters and when they do get alot of time to shine we do get some really good scenes from them but I really will admit that his film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a drama that really does mean that I have to actually talk abut the actual drama that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual drama that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With this films drama being really well written as you can tell right away that the makers of this film knew how to handle there drama as they have it come in really small doses be it the fact that Candy has to have his sick elderly dog put down by one of the farm workers to it then becoming more and more bigger as the film goes on as alot of what makes the drama in this film work so well is the fact that the makers of this film knew to make us care for there characters as then we will feel sorry for them when something dramatic does happen with the best and most emotional piece of drama being when George is forced to kill Lenny as we see Lenny unintentionally kill Curley's Wife when she lets him stroke her soft hair something which he takes to far with them then accidentally snapping her neck which then leads him to running away and going to the spot where George told to him to go should he ever get into trouble with it all ending with George being forced to kill his best friend not out of anger but out of mercy as he would suffered a much more brutal death should Carly himself had found him before George with this scene working really well because of the fact that the makers of this film gave us alot of chances to really get to know and care for these characters with the film having alot more really good dramatic moments in it all of which work really well in the context of the film itself in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall the best word to describe this film is heartbreaking as that's exactly what it is but it's heartbreaking in all of the best ways possible and because of that this is a film and book that really does need to be both read and seen to be believed as both of them are just that good in the first place in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all o the good an as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 10 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from Amazon .
