Carry On Again Doctor Film Review

The Carry On films are films that alot of us have grown up watching be they when they were first being released in cinemas or during one of there many showings on TV. Either way these films have a fanbase that covers both young and old people alike with there most popular subject to make fun of being doctors with the Carry On team making alot of films that take place in a hospital with the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today being one such film and so then join me as I review the film that was the last Carry On film to star Jim Dale until 1992's Carry On Columbus with the film in question being called simply just "Carry On Again Doctor" enjoy.

The plot of this film is when a doctor called Doctor Jimmy Nookey gets sent to work at a hospital in the Beatific Islands he discovers a miracle weight lose drug. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that'd actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not tat bad with this films plot being very simplistic at best which is something that's to be expected from the Carry On films as they all have very basic and simple plots with the same thing being true for this film as well with this films plot being one that whilst it's not as good as the plot of films such as Carry On Camping or Carry On Screaming for example is still really creative as alot of the carry On never really go that full on with there satire as this films plot allows the Carry On team to not only spoof what hospital life was like here in the UK but also what it might be like on these smaller islands as well and to the films credit that's all it needed to do as this film is one that really doesn't need to be all that heavy on the plot as just being simple is more then enough to make the films plot be as good as it could have been in the first place but tho it would have helped the film out if the plot of this film was a lot more stronger then what it is in the first place as it takes almost fifty minuets for the plot of the film to really come into focus with the film spending alot more time in telling us how Nookey came to the Island in the first place with the plot of this film being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is Sid James as Gladstone Screwer , Jim Dale as Doctor Jimmy Nookey and Kenneth Williams as Doctor Frederick Carver. Also starring in this film is Charles Hawtrey as Doctor Ernest Stoppidge / Lady Puddleton , Joan Sims as Ellen Moore , Barbara Windsor as Goldie Locks
Hattie Jacques as Miss Soaper , Patsy Rowlands as Miss Fosdick , Peter Butterworth as The Shuffling Patient , Wilfrid Brambell as Mr Pullen , Elizabeth Knight as Nurse Willing , Peter Gilmore as Henry , Alexandra Dane as A Stout Woman , Pat Coombs as New Matron , William Mervyn as Lord Paragon , Patricia Hayes as Mrs Beasley and Valerie Leon as Deirdre Filkington-Battermore.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acing that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With them all turning in the kind of performances that you'd expect from them in these films with that being something that is both a plus and a negative it's a plus as it does mean that your going to get some decent performances in the film however it's negative as there the exact same performances that you expect from these actors which is fine as it's what there known for but at the same time you do want to see something literally anything different from them from an acting point of view as it makes it look like that there phoning in their performances when there quite clearly not doing that at all with the best actor in the film being Jim Dale as he does get alot of time to shine and to fully show us just how funny of an actor that could be in these films when he's given the chance to do so something that he does take full advantage off as he is somewhat of a shining light in this film with it being made clear as day that he's having a blast making this film as he really does look like that he's having the time of his live working on this film with him making for a convincing protagonist in the film with the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

While the films characters are at best very thinly drawn out they are still some of the more better characters to appear in the later Carry On films. As while the regular Carry On actors are playing the types of roles that you'd expect them to play the film does gave some level fun with there characters like for example instead of making the Kenneth Williams this neurotic person who is always uptight here in this film he's the kind of character that whilst he is still uptight alot of the time he is also willing to have alot more fun with the neurotic and uptight character this time being played by Charles Hawtrey which is something that does make for great twist as it now gives us a chance to see how these two iconic Carry On actors play what is essentially each others character with even Jim Dale's character not being the typical character that he usually plays as he usually plays the character who would always do the right thing no matter what and yet here his character is the exact opposite of that whilst still being a really likable character with oddly enough Barbera Windsor being the only one that is paying the same type of character that she always plays with nothing new added to her which is fine as it's something that you expect from this franchise but at the same time tho alot of this franchises best films have the actors playing different types of characters with those characters usually doing a good of highlighting just how fun that the films are which is something that is also true for this film but at the same time you can tell right away that the makers of this film put alot more effort into the more bigger comedy segments then they did in giving us good characters.

In what s sure to be a nice little treat for fans of the classic British TV series Steptoe And Son when Wilfrid Brambell first appears in this film they actually play a version of the Steptoe And Son theme song. With this also being something that they did for Harry Corbett when he appeared in Carry On Screaming and while that was a nice touch it is something that does detract from the the film as it reminds you that you could be watching a much more better TV show and while it was nice that they added that theme song in there it's also something that does feel a little bit to much like fan service as all it does do is remind you of that show when composing something that sounds enough like it but is very much it's own thing would have had the same effect and would have been something that would have been very easy to include on repeat viewings due to the fact that the Carry On films are mostly aired on ITV and Steptoe And Son was created by ITV's rival the BBC just to be clear it's not a bad piece of music and this films version of it is well done but at the same time it's also not really something that's needed for this film and heck Holiday On The Buses which also starred Wilfrid Brambell didn't play that song and just let his character be his own thing where here it makes you wonder if the Carry On films are set in the same world as Steptoe And Son which is something that does distract you from the film and takes you out of the film but at the same time tho given the fact that Wilfred was mostly known for being in that show it does make sense that the makers of this film would tip that hat to that show much like what they did in Carry On Screaming and given that Harry Corbett hated being on the show there's a good chance that Wilfred liked this little nod to the show more then Harry did.

This is a film that could be seen as being the most boring Carry On film out there as to be frank not alot happens in the film. As the film does spend alot of time in getting up why Nookey is on this island to begin with and when they get there he's back in London with this serum within five minuets when the film could have spent alot more time on that island as while alot of the scenes at the hospital at the start of the film are where the film is most fun to watch all of the scenes on the island are some of the more interesting scenes in this film as we get to see Jim Dale try and deal with the depression of loosing his girlfriend all the while Sid James's character is trying to tell him about the pleasures of island life and just try to cheer up his new friend which is something that could have made for a very entertaining film in it's own right and heck you even could have had the film that Barbera Windsor's character was going to film actually be filmed on the island which might seem implausible but for a Carry On film it is something that would work with the rest of the London characters coming and going when the film needs them on the island and heck the island setting would have given the Carry On team the chance to explore a setting that they very rarely go to that being the jungle as it would have been really funny to see Kenneth Williams just trying to walk through the jungle or it would have been really funny seeing Charles Hawtrey get into some misadventures in the jungle and yet by moving the action quickly back to London it makes that whole island segment feel pointless as so little of what happens in that segment actually plays a part in the plot of the film which is something that does make that segment feel underused and more like an afterthought when compared to the rest of the film.

This is a film that might be considered offensive to alot of the more modern day audience watching this film as the film does make alot of jokes about overweight people. Which was pretty par the course for the films at this point in time as they were made for the everyman and would just tell whatever kind of jokes that they thought would work in the film which in the case just so happens to be jokes about people's weight and yet at the same time you can tell that those jokes were meant to be hurtful or harm anybody there just there to make you laugh and that's really it but at the same time tho it does make you wonder why the makers of this film thought that those kinds of jokes needed to be in the film in the first place as the film even says that only skinny people re found to be attractive to people in England where as on the Island it seems to be the opposite that's true as Nookey does outright dismiss what he's told is a really beautiful woman just because she's overweight and yet one week later when the girl is suddenly skinny he's all over her and while yes it could be argued that he just doesn't find overweight women to be attractive in the first place which would be a fair point to make but when the film does have a plot surrounding women loosing their weight to begin with it does make call into question scenes like that which are still well done and it does still get the plot of the moving forward but it's also something that does feel awkward to watch as it feels like the makers of the film are calling out the film industry in general without really saying all that much that's actually funny about hollywood forcing female actors to loose weight but of course that could just be me looking far to much into something that just isn't there in the first place but it is something that needed to be toned down all the same.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty five minuets and fourteen seconds, Which to be fair is pretty much the exact running time that you expect these films to have in the first place with this film having just about the right amount of plot there in the first place to really cover that amount of running time with this film basically being a slow burner when it really doesn't have the time to be one as by the time Nookey has gotten to the island the film is well over the fifty minuet mark with this film not using it's running time all that wisely as the film doesn't take the time to fully develop it's plot as the film is more focused on showing why Nookey is going to this island then it is in giving us a more developed plot with this effecting the films character development as well which granted is also something that could also be said for the rest of the Carry On films as well and isn't an issue that's exclusive to this film and yet because of the fact that this film basically acts as a slow burner there really should have time some time devoted into giving this films characters some form of character development as that is something that would have made them feel more like fully rounded characters and yet as things stand they come across as characters that you'd find in the first draft of film script with it being made crystal clear that the makers of the film weren't all that bothered about this films characters some character development in the first place which if true does make the makers of this film seem either lazy or tired of this franchise but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.

So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean tat I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With this film being alot more funnier then what it really had any right to be as by all rights this film shouldn't have been that funny in the first place and yet for whatever reason the makers of this film manage to get every last bit of comedy that they really could have done given the fact that the film has three major settings none of which are explored in that much detail and yet all of them are given plenty time to be funny with the best joke in this film being when Nookey accidentally causes a huge power outage to the hospital the film really going over the top with that joke as we see him go from ward to ward just trying to cut the power to the X-Ray room as sparks are going off in there and just seeing all of the hijinks that he gets himself into during that one segment being more then enough to make it funny as we get to see some excellent facial expressions from Jim Dale with him outshining Sid James when it comes to getting laughs in this film with the film having plenty of good jokes that will appease both the adults watching the film and the kids in the audience as well with it being made crystal clear that the makers of this film put alot more effort into this films jokes as this is where the film gets to shine and be as fun as you'd expect from the Carry On team in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall it's very easy to see why the Carry On team would keep on going back to the hospital setting as it's one that does keep on working and while this film might be one of their more weaker hospital set films it is still a really entertaining film to watch in the first place in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in his very film in this very review as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 6 out of 10 from me.

Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from Amazon . Co . Uk and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
