Tron: Ares Film SPOILER FILLED Film Review
To say that Disney has had a very very rocky year this year would be a huge understatement as for as many ups as they've had with alot of their shows. They've had just as many misses with alot of their other ventures and well well it's safe to say that we might be having another big miss on our hands with the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today and so then join me as I give you my SPOILER FILLED review of the film that put alot of focus in letting you all know that it was made for Imax in it's marketing then actually giving you a reason to watch the film with the film in question being called simply just "Tron: Ares" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when a highly sophisticated programme called Ares is sent to the real world on a dangerous mission by his creator it's up to Ares to retrieve a code that will grant the user more life. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad with this films plot not really being all that good as while there are some aspects to the films plot like shifting the action from inside of a computer to the real world is a good idea the film just just smart enough or good enough to make that idea work and so it comes across as being really gimmicky then anything else as this is a story that could have taken part fully in The Grid and nothing about the main plot of the film would need to be changed in order for it to work but to give the film some form of credit it does at the very least try to have a original plot and isn't just relying on nothing more then nostalgia for the first film like what Tron: Legacy did with it's plot but in saying that tho this films plot still isn't that good as it comes across as being a rather generic action film because of the fact that it was stripped of the one thing that made the Tron films standout in the first place that being the fact that alot of the time these films are mainly set from within a computer and when you do that but you don't really replace it with anything new or interesting all it does is leave you with a really generic plot that really could have been the plot to any action film and it would still work all the same with the plot of this film not even being really rather entertaining nor is it really rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is one this films producers Jared Leto as Ares , Greta Lee as Eve Kim and Evan Peters as Julian Dillinger. Also starring in this film is Jodie Turner-Smith as Athena , Hasan Minhaj as Ajay Singh , Arturo Castro as Seth Flores , Gillian Anderson as Elisabeth Dillinger , Cameron Monaghan as Caius , Sarah Desjardins as Erin , Selene Yun as Tess Kim , Aaron Paul Stewart as Cyber Security Pete , Roger Cross as Cross , Roark Critchlow as General McGrath , Kwesi Ameyaw as Silvio , Gary Vaynerchuk as Stuart Roche , horror icon Katharine Isabelle as Marcia Lee Hadlow and Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that good. Which is me being very nice to this film as while there are some decent performances in this film from the likes of Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith for example sadly one of those that turns in a bad performance is the films main star and of it's producers Jared Leto as he's just so wooden in this film with it becoming more and more clear with each and every film that he's the lead star in that he is not leading man material as while he can indeed act he's not that good in this film and he's not a good leading man and it's something that really does make you wonder why Hollywood keeps on casting him as a leading man in these big budget films as he just doesn't have the charm or charisma to carry it off and is much more better suited to being a supporting actor and while there is something decent acting to be found in this film all the films bad acting surely has to be because of the fact that this films director Joachim Rønning cannot get a good performance out of his actors something which he proved in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and proves again with this film as all of the films characters are horribly miscast with all of the films actors feeling lost and unsure of themselves with the acting that's in this very film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is Image Engine Design , Industrial Light & Magic , OPSIS and Supervixen Studios. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good which is something that's not really all that shocking given just what effects companies are working on this film with it being clear as day that the makers of this film cared more about the films effects then they did about alot of the other aspects of the film as while the story is generic and the acting is OK at best where the film does stand out is it's effects with the film making good use of the films real world setting by having elements from The Grid crossover into the real world in really unique ways all of which do look good in the film and while this film this film was always going to bean effects heavy film there's shockingly not that much effects seen in the world with alot of what's done in the film being done for real with the makers of the film only sing CGI to bring to life things that you couldn't possibly do for real which is a great way to use CGI as then you have reference for how lighting and other such things was on the day of filming thus making it alot more easier to blend the two together and while granted there are some effects in The Grid that don't look as good as the rest of the films effects when the film does have a bad looking effect tho it does standout not because it's bad but because the rest of the films effects are just that good in the first place.
SPOILERS START HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you liked the characters or the plot of the second film then to be blunt your not really going to like this film as this film not only doesn't feature ANY of the characters from that second Tron film but acts as if that film never even happened in the first place. With the characters of Sam and Quorra only appearing through the use of archive photos and that's it as there story isn't followed up on whatsoever and heck Kevin doesn't mention that he has a son in the first place which does feel like a slap in the face to those people that did like the second Tron movie as for a good while they were the ones that were keeping this franchise alive and well even when Disney themselves outright cancelled the animated series Tron: Uprising with it being easy to work them into the film as the character arc for Ares is basically that of Quorra's just done over again and so you could have had Ares bump into both characters during his road trip with Eve since Sam apparently sold the company to her or you could have had Eve call him and ask for his help once Ares said what was going on which again would make sense due to the fact that he sold the company to her and yet by not doing that it does seem like Disney wants us to forget that that film ever happened even tho it's director has now directed two great movies back to back in Top Gun: Maverik and F1: The Movie but in saying that tho those characters wouldn't add anything to the plot of this film and would be nothing more then easter eggs for the people that loved the second film whereas this film is quite clearly trying to be it's own thing despite the fact that it has ties to the first Tron film.
To be frank here this films marketing has been so bad as not only have there been very minimal amount of trailers released for the film all of the marketing seems to be focused on letting us know that this film was made Imax and that's really it. As it's on quite literally alot of the films posters and while that is great as it does mean that we are going to be getting some very visually impressive shots in the film it's not an excuse for having a good story or good characters both of which are ting that are very sorely missing in this film and just to go back to the marketing about this film absolutely no body online in the days and weeks leading up it's release was talking about this film either in a positive way or a negative way and even now that the film is out nobody is talking about but now it's because of the fact that they didn't even know that it was a thing in the first place let alone that was already out with this being something that had effective the films opening box office intake as just at the American box office the film earned around $30 million American dollars with a worldwide box office take of around the same amount with the film doing decently over the weekend but Roofman which has better reviews then this film and has so far made around $8 million American dollars could very easily surpass it by Wednesday if not Friday as this film will not do well in it's second weekend due to bad word of mouth as those that did know about the film will say that it's bad and due to the bad marketing that the film had there will still be alot more people that don't know about the film and now they'll be put off watching it due to all of the mixed to bad reviews that the film has been getting.
This film does try to have two villains but it fails in making either of them interesting or even good characters. As we have both Athena and Julian Dillinger as the films main villains with Athena being more of a secondary villain who is a programme like Ares only she's not breaking her own code by going rouge like he is and Julian Dillinger is the films main villain altho it really doesn't matter who is the main and who is the secondary villain as there both weak characters with Julian's main goal being to get this piece of code from Eve so that he can give something more life in the real world and that's really it which isn't a bad plan but the film doesn't really explain why that's a bad thing tho with it making it look like that Julian is doing something evil by wanting this piece of code but never fully explaining why that makes him evil and heck Athena comes across as being more evil then he is as she at least goes after and attacks our heroes whilst all Julian does is have scenes with his mother for the vast majority of the films running time with him only going into The Grid for the films third act and what's worse is that Julian's plan and Julian himself could have been really good if the plan was explained away a bit better then what it was in the final film as the film doesn't really give us a reason to hate him as a character with him just sort of being there where as with Athena we do have that reason to hate her as she does attack the main heroes but at the same time tho she has no plan and is only evil because of the fact that Julian made her to be evil and that's it which feels like waste of a potentially good character as on paper she could have worked she just needed a good writer who knows what there doing to make her a good character.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and fifty one minuets and one second. Which to be fair to this film would be a decent enough running time to have if this was any other good film but for this film it really is more longer then what it really needed to be as the film barely has more then plot there to cover that amount of running time as the film adds so much pointless filler to the film that adds nothing to the films plot nor it's characters and is there just for the sake of being there with the film not even it's running time all that wisely either as nothing about the films plot is that well developed with it being hard to tell just what the main plot of the film is even meant to be in the first place as the films just drops it plot several times with this not really being helped by the fact that the villains main plan isn't well developed either and yet if the makers of this film did develop both of those things and cut the films running time down by about ten minuets or so then they would have ended up with a much more tighter film with the films characters not even being that well developed either as there's really nothing to Ares himself as a character as he just does whatever the films plot demands that he does with his character feeling more like a lesser version of Quorra from the previous film and that's really it with Eve being a less interesting version of Sam as much like with Ares there's nothing to her as character either something which should have been fixed and could have been fixed with a re-write of the films script but I really will admit this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With the films action being the best part of the film as that's where the film really does show of the fact that it was made for Imax due to how good looking that the films action is with us getting a good dose of action in the film altho in saying that tho we only get a small handful of action scenes in the real world which is a shame as the premise alone does make it sound like we're going to be getting some Tron like action scenes in the real world which is something that would help to make this film standout from all of the other action films out there as that would be something new and different and while there are hints of that with Ares chasing down down on Eve on a lightcycle the film doesn't take full advantage of it's real world setting with the best action scene in the whole film being when Ares and a bunch of other programmes attack what is basically Eve's computer to get information on the code that there after which does then culminate in a bunch of Eve's programmes coming to fight back and fend them off which is a good little action scene and one that does show us just how good that this film could have been if the makers of this film out alot more effort into making the film good however as they didn't do that we are stuck with alot of action scenes that are at best boring and generic which granted are few and far between with the vast majority of this films action being really good in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
SPOILERS END HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overall to be blunt this is a film that will be forgotten about by the end of the month due to the fact that not only was it very badly marketed but also due to the fact that it's just a bland and forgettable film that somehow manages to make Tron: Legacy look like a masterpiece by comparison as that's just how bland , bad and forgettable that this film really is in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official Tron fandom wiki page , the official Disney fandom wiki page and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great the official Disney fandom wiki page this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from the official Disney fandom wiki page are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid the official Disney fandom wiki page really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
